Since 2001, Dieter Kosslick has presided over the Berlin International Film Festival, developing it into the world’s largest public movie festival. German film was given its very own section and the work of German directors is regularly featured in the international competition. In 2004, Fatih Akin even won the Golden Bear with “Against the Wall.” A vegetarian himself, not only did Kosslick launch the “culinary cinema” program, he also makes sure up-and-coming talent gets a chance to shine. Every year, he invites 250 young filmmakers from all over the world to come and network with international movie greats. The man with the red scarf and the black hat wrote festival history with glamor and stars such as the Rolling Stones and Catherine Deneuve, but also with a program with its finger on the pulse of current societal developments. In 2019, Dieter Kosslick will be directing the festival for the last time. Arts.21 rolls out the red carpet one more time for “Mr. Berlinale” and talks to him about great movies and unforget- table encounters.
