SHABBAT, SCHOLAR AND SUPPER SERIES
Is the Arab spring a success - or a failure? Are the protests in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen aboutdemocracy - or about food? Is real democracy in the Middle East viable or is it a faraway goal? Come hear author, soldier andlegislator Michael Bar-Zohar share his insights on the state of democracy in the Middle East.Co-Sponsored by the Israel Involvement Committee
Ori SoltesFriday, November 11 at 6:00 pmLost and (Sometimes) Found:Nazi-Plundered Art
Ori Soltes is Professorial Lecturer in Theology and Fine Arts at Georgetown University and former Directorof the B’nai B’rith Klutznick National Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. As the co-founder and chairmanof the Holocaust Art Restitution Project, he has conducted research on behalf of museums and individualswith claims for the return of art that was plundered by the Nazis. Professor Soltes is the author of nearly 200
books, articles, exhibition catalogues and essays on a variety of subjects.
It is said that as much as one-fifth of the world’s art changed hands during World War II, mostly at the hands of the Nazis. Why andhow did the Nazi regime plunder so much art, mostly from Jews? What was the process of trying to return it to its owners after thewar and how and why did that effort virtually disappear by the end of the 1950s—and how did it re-emerge by the late 1990s?What have been the challenges and some of the signal successes and failures in the struggle to restore works of art, some invaluable, many only valuable as family heirlooms to the victims from whom they were stolen or their heirs?Co-Sponsored by The Renaissance Group

The President’sPoint of View
From theRabbi’s Study
(cont. on page 11)
I am writing this bulletin article a few days before thePalestinians plan to unilaterally announce statehood. That meansthat by the time this bulletin is published, much will havechanged in the Middle East landscape. And as I write this, itunclear what will unfold in the coming days and weeks. What isclear however, and will be the case regardless of what happensover the next weeks, is that this is a truly precarious time for theJewish state. The so-called Arab Spring has not yielded much of amove toward the hoped-for democracy. Egypt, once an ally, albeita cold one, now has individuals storming the Israeli embassy.Turkey, once one of Israel’s closest allies, now sees growingantagonism. And at every turn, the process of working todelegitimize Israel continues to grow.
It is not a good time for the Jewish State. Now more than ever it isimportant that we know what is going on, what we can do, andhow to make our voices heard. A few suggestions on where tostart:
1. Between the morning and afternoon services on Yom Kippur,Temple member and AIPAC Northeast Regional Director MichaelSachs will once again give us an update on Israel. Here is anopportunity to hear from one of the most knowledgeableindividuals in our community with regard to what is takingplace and the ways in which we can help. Thank you Mike!
2. Join me on October 16 for the Stand Up for Israel Rally. Wehave our 5K run that morning at 9:30. I will be participating in itand then heading straight to the event. If you plan on attendingthe 5K please join me. We’ll arrive a bit late, but there will stillbe a great deal to learn and do. If you are not participating in the5K please make plans to be there the entire time. If you’d like tostay closer to “home” you can learn more about the media’s biastoward Israel by attending an outstanding talk by Gary Kenzersponsored by Renaissance Group and the Israel InvolvementCommittee here at TSTI at 2:00 P.M.
3. Join a pro-Israel group (or two or three). Join AIPAC, J-Street,ARZA... join and get involved with an organization that iscommitted to the Jewish State.
4. Read sources that offer insight, analysis, and can recommendways to get involved. We have a list of such sources on theTemple website and, as often as possible, we link to the articles
The summer of 2011 in the halls ofGovernment in Washington, D.C. willlong be remembered as a time whenRepublicans and Democrats wereincapable of agreeing on anything.
This gridlock has gone on for years now but months of dramaover the debt ceiling has just made matters worse.
There has just been one issue that Republicans andDemocrats have uniformly and consistently agreed upon:support for the State of Israel.
This year, the Unites States provided over $3 billion in aidto Israel. Support for this aid was almost unanimous amongboth Republican and Democrats. The reality is that no matterhow much money is raised through the efforts of the UnitedJewish Appeal and other organizations, these dollars arerelatively small in comparison to the America’s annualcommitment.
How is it that Congressman from districts where there isvirtually no Jewish population, become ardent supporters ofIsrael? There are many reasons I’m sure, but certainly a leadingfactor in the efforts of pro-Israel lobbies, the largest beingAIPAC. When virtually every Senator and Congressman makesa personal appearance at AIPAC’s annual policy conference, you understand the enormous reach and influence of the lobby.
Congress’s traditional support for Israel should not, however, be taken for granted. There are winds of change in theair. The need to reduce the federal deficit is causing somelegislators to look closely at foreign aid. Some of the newmembers of Congress do not believe, as a matter of philosophy,in foreign aid. Sooner or later, some legislator will challengeAmerica’s financial support to Israel.
American Jews have a special place in our hearts for Israel. We support Israel in many ways; our UJA gift, the planting oftrees in Israel, a family trip or a birthright trip for our children. But, if we have not done so already, we need to find a place tosupport the efforts to continue America’s strong support forIsrael. We can do this by supporting lobbying groups such asAIPAC. We can also write to our legislators and ask for theircontinued support. This may be the most important thing wecan do to help maintain the existence and security of Israel.Israel has survived wars and intifadas but never in my lifetimehas Israel seemed so isolated. The Arab spring has put intoquestion the continued viability of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty. The Palestinian application for Statehood made to the UnitedNations had drawn world wide support. The efforts atdelegitimization of Israel are all around us. Only the UnitedStates stands by Israel during this difficult time. If this supportis to continue, Israel needs each and everyone of us to helpinsure America’s continued commitment. This is no time for anyof us to sit on the sidelines.

Religious School
Change is hard for many while newbeginnings are exciting for others. Some of us go kicking and screaming
into the unknown and others jump in head first. There are timeswe might want to take on a new challenge alone and other timeswe may need a partner or small group to join us. Some peoplewant to look for a new job while others are forced into thesituation.
For myself, I am usually the ‘jump-in-head-first-go-it-alone’person who just happens to attract the ‘kicking-and-screaming-I’m-not-so-sure-about-this’ friend.
This has happened quite often actually…it’s how I’ve managed toconvince my co-worker, Andrea Dean, to ‘volunteer’ to be my co-teacher in the Religious School kindergarten class. I’m sure Imade it sound like an easy job and talked to her about the extramoney to help pay for her baby’s childcare fees. Pretty soon the 2hour commute, the cost of gas and the extra planning andreporting that go along with this job will far outweigh thepromise of fun times working together, but I expect that by then,Andrea will have been hooked.
It’s also how I managed to excitedly mention to Rabbi Miller and3 of the teachers in the preschool about the 3-day farmconference I spoke of in last month’s article, which, by the way,has taken on a life of its own. In early September the trainerscame from Maryland to begin what will be a 10 monthpartnership with the Preschool and Religious School staff. InOctober a naturalist team from Nebraska will spend 2 days‘walking the fields’ and drawing up proposals for our propertywhile also providing additional teacher training so can become anationally certified outdoor classroom.
It’s the same influence that has allowed my son, Alex, the abilityto decide to move to Florida for a job. Unfortunately it is also thereason that I volunteered to take the road trip with him. I hadvisions of mother-son bonding time. What I didn’t factor in isjust how much longer the trip feels when riding in a JeepWrangler with plastic windows and a soft top roof a day afterhurricane Irene. Not only did we bounce around like a sailboatin high seas, the wind and residual rain storms made the noiselevel deafening; we could not hear each other speak unless wewere yelling. At least we have the same taste in music and areboth content with the volume on high.
Our Promise Tree has bloomed! As you enter the lobby by theReligious School Office, please take note of our amazing“Promise Tree”. As part of our Opening Day events, each studentin the school was asked to write a promise of something theywould do in the coming year to help make a difference to oneperson. As I read many of them, I was touched by the kindnessand thoughtfulness that went into their writings. Please add youown wish to the tree- there is a container with the tools you needright by the tree.
If you walked through the halls our halls on our first day, youheard students welcoming each other back, new studentsmaking new friends and our community strengthening. The firstday has set the tone for an environment where every child isrespected, celebrated for their unique qualities, and an integralpart of our school community.
During this year, we will be encouraging teamwork as well askindness through some healthy competition. Our theme is YadB’Yad, means hand in hand, and that is one way our children aregoing to learn this year. Each homeroom is going to be a YadSquad, and they will compete with other classes in various areas:Shabbat Attendance, Hebrew reading at home, class behaviorand teamwork on many projects. There will be a team prize atChanukah, at the end of the year and small rewards in between!
Our older students, which include Seventh Grade and up, willalso participate in many new and challenging programs duringthe year.
Watch the next e-blast for more details and please help supportyour student’s Yad Squad!
L’Shalom,

As of this writing the first day of school begins in less than anhour and I know that there will be children who will enter ourschool excited to make new friends and there will also be thosewho come in kicking and screaming, literally. It is scary formany children and parents alike to start on this new adventure, but in a few weeks they will all settle in to a rhythm. My hope isthat, like Andrea, once they’ve been here awhile they will behooked. Maybe they will be like my farm team and theirclassroom experience will take on a life of its own. I guaranteethere will be bumps along the way when we all feel as thoughwe won’t be able to weather the storm but we will get throughthe highs and lows together, as part of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel’s Iris Family Center.

The challenges to the Jewish state are great — more so right nowthen perhaps at any time in recent memory. Israel is increasinglyleft standing alone with United States as her only ally. If we don’tstand up for Israel who is going to? And, as the great teacherHillel put it, “If not now when?”
