God Makes Us GemsExcept for stones in otherwise fertile soil, a hillside described in

the Book of Isaiah had the potential to become a choice vineyard. So, the landowner got rid of the rocks, tilled, planted, and even built a watchtower to keep an eye on things.

The opposite happened in the wine country of northern California. Up until the 1960’s, people threw all manner of debris—not just some unwanted fieldstone—down cliffs that descended toward the ocean shore. The detritus piled up on beaches that people unceremoniously called “the dumps.”

Once the dumping stopped, pounding waves broke down and carried away much of the debris. Bottles, jars, and other glass got broken, but it kept washing back up. Sand acted like sandpaper, and the surf coming in and out further smoothed the sharp edges and polished the broken fragments.

These days, sea glass is prized. Red pieces, mostly from taillights of old cars, are called “ruby reds” and are treasured gems for sea glass collectors. Today’s glittering Glass Beach, once a dump piled two or three stories high, has become a tourist attraction, not only for the beauty of the glass but for the sound made by pieces of glass being washed in gentle waves.

We can learn a lesson from that. Our Lord came into a messy world. He came to smooth out people’s rough edges and to give hope to the brokenhearted. We need the Word of God gently washing over us time and again so that we can reach our beautiful potential. That’s why we gather for the TV Mass every Sunday.

We’re at a crossroads right now, because Heart of the Nation can no longer meet the costs for weekly TV airtime without a huge wave of new donations. Please be as generous as you can in the “Crossroads Campaign” so that no one who depends on the TV Mass will find it washed away.

The Treasure Columbus SoughtWhen Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain, he set his sights on opening a new

trade route to China, India, and islands of the Far East. He also believed that he and the Spanish monarchy had pivotal roles in spreading the Catholic faith in preparation for the Lord’s second coming.

On October 12, he sighted land—not the North American continent, but an island in the Bahamas. He wondered if it could be one of the islands of riches in the biblical time of King Solomon.

Gold, exotic parrots, and spices brought back by Columbus led the monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella to send him out again. Franciscan friars joined that second trip.

Although the colony of Santo Domingo resulted, the voyage failed to turn a financial profit. It’s a good Columbus Day reminder

for us to seek enrichment of the kind that doesn’t go into treasure chests.

Columbus’ third voyage under the Spanish crown brought him to modern-day Venezuela. A waterfall of fresh water cascading into the ocean led him to believe that he had come to the earthly

Paradise. On a fourth voyage,

tasked with ing gold and strait to

ndia, Columbus

. Things go as planned. After

turning back, he had to beach his small fleet in the Caribbean and await rescue.

Columbus never set foot in North America, but European colonists arrived there in the wake of his discoveries. May you pursue the riches that God wants you to discover in your life.

At a Crossroads for Saving the TV MassWhen the TV Mass went nationwide in 2011, Heart of the Nation planned for

three years of steadily increasing donations to cover the costs for TV airtime. “Now, we’re at a crossroads,” said Bruno John, executive director. “Donations have gone up, but not enough. Without more funding, we’ll have to go the direction of cancelling TV Mass in as many cities as necessary.”

During the “Crossroads Campaign” fund drive, can you find a way to help? • If you have never donated for the TV Mass or it has been a while, please use the

envelope with this bulletin to send your offering today. • If you donate occasionally, can you pledge to give monthly?

(We understand that circumstances change, and you can change or cancel your pledge at any time.)

• If you already donate monthly, can you make a special, one-time offering or even increase your monthly pledge?

“Especially if you or someone you love depends on the Mass every week, there has never been a more urgent time to donate,” John said. “We want to stay on the air for you but need your help right away.”

Paradise. On a fourth voyage,

tasked with finding more gold and a strait to reach India, Columbus still hoped for conquests for the Church. Things didn’t go as planned at all. After turning back, he had to beach his small fleet in the Caribbean and await rescue.

AUTUMN PRAYERLord Jesus,During this season of harvest,How shall I labor for You?Amid autumn’s panorama,How will I glorify You?As dusk comes earlier,How can I seek Your light?Seeing fall turn to winter,How might I change, too?O Lord, I give You thanks, for Your love is never dormant.May I grow in faith, for Your promises are true.

Amen.

Have You Wondered? What does the Church teach about spiritual communion?

St. Alphonsus Liguori composed a prayer to ask for spiritual communion with the Lord when we cannot receive the holy Eucharist. Heart of the Nation includes that prayer in the TV Mass.

In the encyclical letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia [Church of the Eucharist], Saint John Paul II advised the faithful to cultivate a constant desire for the Eucharist, which is the reason for saints teaching and seeking spiritual communion. St. Teresa of Jesus explained in Camino de Perfección [The Way of Perfection] that God’s love is impressed upon those who make a spiritual communion.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI explained in the Church document Sacramentum Caritatis [Sacrament of Charity] that the desire to receive the Lord and join our sufferings with His has spiritual benefit for the individual and the Church. Participation in holy Mass remains important for the faithful who cannot receive the Eucharist!

Our Lady of the Rosary(Feast Day Celebrated on October 7)

While the origin of the rosary remains uncertain, saints of old and modern-day Popes have encouraged its use. Pope St. Pius V, for instance, exhorted the faithful to pray the rosary in the 16th century, when conquering armies threatened Christianity. The October 7 date for Our Lady of the Rosary commemorates the victory of outnumbered Christians in the Battle of Lepanto, which was revealed to the pope in a vision.

The rosary combines traditional Catholic prayers with meditation on mysteries of our faith. Rather than a prayer to Mary, Saint John Paul II described the rosary as our echo of Mary’s prayer and a way to contemplate Christ as Mary did.

On different days, reflect on the Glorious Mysteries, Joyful Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, and Luminous Mysteries. Contemplate one specific mystery with each of the rosary’s five decades: Glorious MysteriesThe Resurrection of the LordAscension of the LordComing of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost Mary’s Assumption into HeavenCrowning of Mary, Queen of Heaven

Rosary videos at www.HeartoftheNation.org guide viewers in prayer and meditation on each group of mysteries. (On the Website, click on “Resources” and then “The Rosary.”)
