For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and

drudgery, night and day we worked, so as not to burden any of you. Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we want‐ed to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. In fact, when we were with you, we in‐structed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat. We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in a disorderly way, by not keeping busy but minding the business of others. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against na‐tion, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. “Before all this happens, however, they will seize and perse‐cute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and gover‐nors because of my name. WHY IS THERE SO MUCH EVIL?

We observe many catastrophes around us and often plenty of evil. In the movies, we see evil villains progressing while the good suffer, are persecuted or attacked. Through the plotting of the villains, sometimes the good ones lose (at least apparently) the love of their lives or children. The good thing about movies is that we know in the end, good will triumph most of the time. Which is the same thing the proph-et Malachi tells us today in the first reading.

People wonder why there is so much evil, why bad things happen to good people and why bad people prosper. It is a question most of us have had at one time or another. The problem of evil in the world has always been a huge philo-sophical issue that can only be answered from a firm hope in the promises of Christ of a new heaven and earth. The call in the face of serious problems of the world is to have faith and trust that the promises of God are always fulfilled and that we know the ending because we have known Christ.

On the other hand, many people think that the natural ca-tastrophes, earthquakes, floods, misfortunes are signs that the end of the world is near. We don’t know that, because no one knows the day or the hour and the only way to pre-pare ourselves, Jesus says, is to remain firm in the faith, joyful and confident because we know the end of this story, alt-hough we don’t know when it will happen. How can we keep firm, joyful, and confident? First, by praying, turning to God in every moment of our lives, both good and bad. Sec-ond, by doing the works of the Kingdom of God, which in-cludes works of love, healing and mercy toward everyone; everything that entails the good toward all, even if it means personal sacrifices, such as being attentive to what can help the truth and justice of God to reign, contributing our grain of sand so that evil does not always conquer. While we wait, we must work tirelessly.

For Reflection Do I get discouraged or depressed when I perceive that evil appears to be winning? In what ways can I make the king-dom of God present in my own family, community, and work place?

Jubilee of Mercy Thirty‐Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

As this Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to an end, Jesus’ first disciples ask what every age seems to wonder about the end of the world: “Teacher, when will this happen? What sign will there be?” (Luke 21:7). But instead of what we’d like to know, Jesus tells us what we need to know.

Don’t be terrified by natural disasters, human violence, per‐sonal sufferings. Because God’s mercy abounds, all is grace. “It will lead to your giving testimony” (21:13). So Malachi promises “the sun of justice with its healing rays” (Malachi 3:20a); and Jesus describes how we should welcome the end: “Stand erect and raise your heads, because your redemption is at hand” (Gospel Acclamation, Luke 21:28). Rather than worrying about ourselves and the future’s perils, both Jesus’ gospel and Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us go forth to spend our lives proclaiming God’s promise of boundless mercy, but also translating God’s mercy into living deeds of unfailing compassion and enduring comfort.

Al ir concluyendo este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, los primeros discípulos de Jesús preguntan lo que en cada épo‐ca parece preguntarse acerca del fin del mundo: “Maestro, ¿cuándo va a ser eso?” (Lucas 21:7). Pero en lugar de lo que nos gustaría saber, Jesús nos dice lo que necesitamos cono‐cer. No se preocupen por desastres naturales, la violencia de las personas, el sufrimiento humano. Debido a la abundante mise‐ricordia de Dios, todo es gracia. “Esto les servirá para dar testimo‐nio de mí” (21:13). El profeta Malaquías promete que “brillará el sol de justicia, que les traerá la salvación en sus rayos” (Malaquías 3:20a) y, Jesús describe cómo debemos recibir el fin “Levántense, alcen la cabeza; se acerca su liberación” (21:28). En lugar de estar‐nos preocupando por nosotros mismos y los riesgos del futuro, tanto el Evangelio de Jesús como el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia convocado por el Papa Francisco nos invitan a avanzar pasando nuestra vida proclamando la promesa de la abundante misericor‐dia de Dios e interpretándola en obras vivas de compasión inago‐table y consolación renovada .

¿POR QUÉ HAY TANTO MAL?

Vemos muchas catástrofes a nuestro alrededor y en mu-chas ocasiones, mucho mal. En las películas vemos avanzar el mal de los villanos mientras que los buenos sufren o se ven perseguidos y atacados. Por las malas mañas de los villanos, a veces los buenos pierden (o eso parece) el amor de su vida o les secuestran a sus hijos. Lo bueno es que sabemos que al final el bien triunfará. Eso es lo mismo que nos anun-cia el profeta Malaquías en la primera lectura de hoy.

La gente se pregunta por qué hay tanto mal, por qué les pasan cosas malas a los buenos y los malos prosperan. Es una pregunta que nos hacemos todos en muchas ocasio-nes. El problema del mal en el mundo ha sido siempre un enorme tema filosófico al que solo se puede responder des-de la esperanza en las promesas de Cristo, de un cielo nue-vo y una tierra nueva. La llamada ante los graves proble-mas del mundo es tener la fe y la confianza de que las pro-mesas de Dios siempre se cumplen, y que conocemos el final porque hemos conocido a Cristo.

Por otro lado, mucha gente piensa, ante las catástrofes na-turales, los terremotos, las inundaciones, las desgracias, que el fin de los tiempos está cerca. No lo sabemos, porque na-die sabe el día ni la hora y la única manera de prepararnos, nos dice Jesús, es mantenernos firmes en la fe, alegres y confiados, porque conocemos el final de la historia, aunque no sepamos cuándo ocurrirá. ¿Cómo nos mantenemos fir-mes, alegres y confiados? En primer lugar, orando, volvién-donos a Dios en todo momento de nuestra vida, bueno o malo. Segundo, haciendo las obras propias del reino de Dios, que son obras de amor, sanación y misericordia para todos; todo lo que sea buscar el bien para todos, aunque suponga sacrificio, como estar pendientes de lo que pueda ayudar a que reine la verdad y la justicia de Dios, poniendo nuestro granito de arena para que no siempre triunfe el mal. Mientras esperamos hay que trabajar sin cansarnos.

Para la reflexión ¿Me desanimo o me deprimo mucho cuando veo que el mal parece ir ganando? ¿De qué maneras puedo hacer presente el reino de Dios en mi propia familia, comunidad y lugar de trabajo?
