LITURGIA DEL DIA / TODAY’S LITURGY Primera Lectura: Hechos 15: 1-2, 22-29 En aquellos días, vinieron de Judea a Antioquía algunos discípu-los y se pusieron a enseñar a los hermanos que si no se circunci-daban conforme a la ley de Moisés, no podrían salvarse. Esto provocó un altercado y una violenta discusión con Pablo y Berna-bé; al fin se decidió que Pablo, Bernabé y algunos más fueran a Jerusalén para tratar el asunto con los apóstoles y los presbíteros. Los apóstoles y los presbíteros, de acuerdo con toda la comuni-dad cristiana, juzgaron oportuno elegir a algunos de entre ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé. Los elegidos fueron Judas (llamado Barsabás) y Silas, varones prominentes en la comunidad. A ellos les entregaron una carta que decía: “Nosotros, los apóstoles y los presbíteros, hermanos suyos, saludamos a los hermanos de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia, convertidos del paganismo. Enterados de que algunos de entre nosotros, sin mandato nues-tro, los han alarmado e inquietado a ustedes con sus palabras, hemos decidido de común acuerdo elegir a dos varones y enviár-selos, en compañía de nuestros amados hermanos Bernabé y Pablo, que han consagrado su vida a la causa de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Les enviamos, pues, a Judas y a Silas, quienes les trasmitirán, de viva voz, lo siguiente: ‘El Espíritu Santo y nosotros hemos decidido no imponerles más cargas que las estrictamente necesarias. Segunda Lectura: Apocalipsis 21: 10-14, 22-23 Un ángel me transportó en espíritu a una montaña elevada, y me mostró a Jerusalén, la ciudad santa, que descendía del cielo, resplandeciente con la gloria de Dios. Su fulgor era semejante al de una piedra preciosa, como el de un diamante cristalino. Tenía una muralla ancha y elevada, con doce puertas monumentales, y sobre ellas, doce ángeles y doce nombres escritos, los nombres de las doce tribus de Israel. Tres de estas puertas daban al orien-te, tres al norte, tres al sur y tres al poniente. La muralla descan-saba sobre doce cimientos, en los que estaban escritos los doce nombres de los apóstoles del Cordero. First Reading: Acts 15: 1-2, 22-29 Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the broth-ers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved.” Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question. The apostles and el-ders, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose repre-sentatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers. CULTURA CATOLICA / CATHOLIC CULTURE ¿Que es el Sacramento de la Confirmación?

En este sacramento se fortalece y se completa la obra del Bautis-mo. Por este sacramento, el bautizado se fortalece con el don del Espíritu Santo. Se logra un arraigo más profundo a la filiación divi-na, se une más íntimamente con la Iglesia, fortaleciéndose para ser testigo de Jesucristo, de palabra y obra. Por él es capaz de defender su fe y de transmitirla. A partir de la Confirmación nos convertimos en cristianos maduros y podremos llevar una vida cristiana más perfecta, más activa. Es el sacramento de la madurez cristiana y que nos hace capaces de ser testigos de Cristo.

El día de Pentecostés – cuando se funda la Iglesia – los apóstoles y discípulos se encontraban reunidos junto a la Virgen. Estaban te-merosos, no entendían lo que había pasado – creyendo que todo había sido en balde - se encontraban tristes. De repente, descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre ellos –quedaron transformados - y a partir de ese momento entendieron todo lo que había sucedido, dejaron de tener miedo, se lanzaron a predicar y a bautizar. La Confirma-ción es “nuestro Pentecostés personal”. El Espíritu Santo está ac-tuando continuamente sobre la Iglesia de modos muy diversos. La Confirmación – al descender el Espíritu Santo sobre nosotros - es una de las formas en que Él se hace presente al pueblo de Dios.

Institución El Concilio de Trento declaró que la Confirmación era un sacra-mento instituido por Cristo, ya que los protestantes lo rechazaron porque - según ellos - no aparecía el momento preciso de su institu-ción. Sabemos que fue instituido por Cristo, porque sólo Dios pue-de unir la gracia a un signo externo.

Además encontramos en el Antiguo Testamento, numerosas refe-rencias por parte de los profetas, de la acción del Espíritu en la época mesiánica y el propio anuncio de Cristo de una venida del Espíritu Santo para completar su obra. Estos anuncios nos indican un sacramento distinto al Bautismo. El Nuevo Testamento nos na-rra como los apóstoles, en cumplimiento de la voluntad de Cristo, iban imponiendo las manos, comunicando el Don del Espíritu San-to, destinado a complementar la gracia del Bautismo. “Al enterarse los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén de que Samaria había acep-tado la Palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan. Estos baja-ron y oraron por ellos para que recibieran al Espíritu Santo; pues todavía no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos; únicamente habían sido bautizados en nombre del Señor Jesús. Entonces les imponían las manos y recibían al Espíritu Santo”. (Hech. 8, 15-17;19, 5-6).

El Signo: La Materia y la Forma Dijimos que la materia del Bautismo, el agua, tiene el significado de limpieza, en este sacramento la materia significa fuerza y pleni-tud. El signo de la Confirmación es la “unción”. Desde la antigüe-dad se utilizaba el aceite para muchas cosa: para curar heridas, a los gladiadores de les ungía con el fin de fortalecerlos, también era símbolo de abundancia, de plenitud. Además la unción va unido al nombre de “cristiano”, que significa ungido.

La materia de este sacramento es el “santo crisma”, aceite de oliva mezclado con bálsamo, que es consagrado por el Obispo el día del Jueves Santo. La unción debe ser en la frente.

La forma de este sacramento, palabras que acompañan a la unción y a la imposición individual de las manos “Recibe por esta señal de la cruz el don del Espíritu Santo” (Catec. no. 1300) . La cruz es el arma conque cuenta un cristiano para defender su fe.

The Sacrament of Confirmation Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem so that they could be baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts of the Apostles 1:5). When about 120 of Jesus’ disciples were gathered the Holy Spirit came in the form of wind and fire. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples understood that God was anoint-ing them for a special mission (Acts of the Apostles 2). The early Christians made sure, then, that whenever they brought people into the Church, they would baptize them with water and then anoint them with oil. Why oil? Oil had been used in the Old Testaments to anoint priests, prophets, and kings. The early Chris-tians realized that their community was “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation” (1 Peter 2:9). Each new member was anointed with oil after being baptized with water. In the early Church Baptism and Confirmation were celebrated in a single ceremony. It is still done this way in the churches of the East. In the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of the West, the two sacraments gradually separated. The Church in the West want-ed the bishop to complete a person’s initiation. As the Church grew and the bishops ministered over ever larger territories, the bishop could not be present for every Baptism. So began the cus-tom of gathering groups of baptized Catholics together later so that the bishop could confirm them all at one time. In the process over time the reception of the Eucharist came before the celebration of Confirmation. In a number of dioceses the Sacrament of Confirmation is now celebrated before the reception of the Eucharist. This restored or-der returns the celebration of Confirmation to its original place after Baptism in the Sacraments of Initiation, with the Eucharist completing Christian initiation. In the United States the designated age for Confirmation is be-tween the ages of discretion and the age 16. In order to be con-firmed a person

• must have reached the age of discretion, which is defined as about the age of seven;

• profess the Catholic faith and desire to receive the sacrament;

• be in a state of grace;

be ready to live as a witness to Jesus Christ. Receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Christian’s relation-ship with God is made stronger. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are strengthened: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. In this way the Christian is equipped to become a better witness to Christ in the world. A bishop is the usual celebrant of the Sacrament of Confirmation. During the celebration of Confirmation the bishop extends his hands over those to be confirmed and calls upon God: “Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide.” Then each person to be confirmed is anointed with chrism on the forehead as the bishop says, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” In Confirmation the Christian becomes more closely united with Christ. With the strengthening of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit the Christian is able to accept new responsibilities for witnessing Jesus to the world.
