For the entree ….. The final Productivity Commission Report released. The much awaited Productivity Commission Report – “Caring for Older Australians” was released on the 8th August. This report recommends a raft of sweeping changes to the way the Aged Care sector will operate in the future. It is a bold 5 year plan, that will bring a strong element of consumer directed care and consumer choice into the sector, plus it will provide a much more enhanced funding model that is more appropriately aligned to the actual cost of providing care to our residents, both in a residential and community care environment. The only thing however with major reviews such as this, is that it still needs the Government to act upon the recommendations. The present Government is making the right kinds of noises, but for something that is so major and foreshadows fundamental changes to the entire Aged Care sector, a true bi- partisan support will be needed from all sides of Government. Let’s hope we are not let down by political games and grandstanding. It is truly time for united action, and this Productivity Commission report provides an excellent platform to provide real change that will improve the Aged Care sector for all current and future generations. We think we do a pretty good job, and I know that our staff are genuinely trying to do their best for our residents at every opportunity. But, how do we actually know that we are doing a good job? One of the best and effective ways of finding out this answer, is to actually ask you, and during August this is exactly what we did. We sent out some 500 survey questionnaires to our Independent Living residents, and we were very pleased to receive back 246 replies. This is almost a 50% response, which for a voluntary survey is a good response and certainly ensures in our mind that the answers we received are reflective of the entire resident population. We asked 6 main categories of questions focusing on the following key areas : 1. The Quality of our Administration services that we provide to you. 2. How we handle your complaints and general issues. 3. The Health and Support services that we provide in the village. 4. The Recreation and Lifestyle services and amenities available to you. 5. The quality of our general services such as Security, Transport, Maintenance and Gardening. 6. Your feedback on the building developments and the changes that are happening on our Bentley Park site. We also took the opportunity to ask you an open ended question about the kind of new and improved services and facilities that you would like to see introduced into your village. This provided some very interesting responses, and this data will be used by the Board and Management as key input into the up-coming Strategic Planning workshop that we are holding on the 23rd September. Obviously a lot of what was asked for will cost substantial money and with everything it is about balance and establishing the best use and value for our money. A full list of the Top 10 wish list items is provided below. The Bentley Park TOP 10 most wanted …… 1. Heated swimming pool and/or spa/hydro pool. 2. Recycling - seen to be Green. 3. Overall, the survey has brought to light some very positive results, highlighting areas of strength, as well as helping identify areas where we can improve. I was particularly proud to note that in all six categories we achieved a majority response that indicated our quality of service was either “outstanding” or “very good”. To extract just one highlight, 90% of residents believed that the quality of our Administrative support to you was exceptional. This is very positive feedback, and I know that the staff were very pleased with this result, and makes them proud to know that their hard work is appreciated by our residents. The graphs over the page provide a summary of the responses received. I would like to thank all residents that took the time to participate in this survey. Your feedback and honest comments are a vital ingredient in helping us improve what we do and shape the future of our village for not only our current residents, but also for the many future generations to come. The final Productivity Commission Report released. The much awaited Productivity Commission Report – “Caring for Older Australians” was released on the 8th August. This report recommends a raft of sweeping changes to the way the Aged Care sector will operate in the future. It is a bold 5 year plan, that will bring a strong element of consumer directed care and consumer choice into the sector, plus it will provide a much more enhanced funding model that is more appropriately aligned to the actual cost of providing care to our residents, both in a residential and community care environment. Independent Residents Quality of Service Survey Results
And now for the dessert ….. To close this month’s report I would just like to provide a quick update on some other developments that occurred during the month. • Electric Bed Donation from Hollywood Private Hospital. Our heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation goes out to the Management at Hollywood Private Hospital who, during the month of August, made a donation of some 55 electric hospital beds to SwanCare Group. These electric beds will provide a much needed boost to the way in which our care services can be delivered and will provide an enhanced level of comfort to our residents in our care facilities. • Plantations Cafe In the last 12 months, the average attendance per day for lunch at Plantations has been on the steady decline, to the point where it has become (sadly) obvious that we are no longer able to sustain this service as the costs are now well in excess of the revenue received in return.
We are aware that for those who do attend Plantations that it does provide a good meal and for our regular patrons, this is a service that they value quite highly. For this reason the decision has been made to relocate this meal service to Spritz Café. We have begun discussions with Hospitality Services to ensure that the level of service and quality experienced at Plantations is transferred to Spritz. It is our intention to cease the Plantations service by the end of September. Residents will receive more information on this in the near future. • Capital Budget Items Residents are aware that we have now entered a new financial year and with that comes the new budget for capital works. I mentioned to the residents at the July VRAC meeting the capital items that we were able to include in this year’s budget. For those that were unable to attend the VRAC meeting, please find below the list of capital works that we are proposing to undertake this year, and also those works that are in the pipe-line and have been rolled-over to next year.

CEO’s Report continued...
Events PastWe had our usual two main events during August, starting on Friday August 5th at the Stratton Centre, followed by the Auditorium Concert on Sunday 14th. The Stratton Luncheon and Concert featured a performance by the duo “Stumblin In”, Liz and Bob singing to, and along with us – a pleasant few hours much enjoyed. The Sunday Auditorium Concert was a great show of piano and accordion playing by Mr. Speedy Fingers, “Milton Q”, a mixture of modern and classic pieces. The audience was less than usual, (due to people sick and others on cruises) but the show was certainly enjoyed and appreciated by those who did attend.
Coming Up The September Stratton Luncheon & Concert will be on Friday the 2nd, 11.30am to 2.30pm as usual, still a few tickets left, ring Shirley on 93554767 if you’d like to come. The performer will be top vocalist Adam Penn, who performed so well at the Foundation Day Dinner that we booked him for this repeat show. The Auditorium Concert on Sunday September 11th will feature the “Cambridge Musicians” a twenty five piece band playing a range of numbers, old and more recent. We had them here last year and they put on a most enjoyable show. Concert starts at 2pm, bus picks up throughout the Village from 1.30pm – tickets at the door, $5, see you there!
Opportunity Shop The Op. Shop continues to do well and custom has returned to the levels we had prior to the shop’s re-location, people have got used to the new location and the better layout of the shop. It is pleasing that we still get plenty of items donated, enabling us to make available good quality goods for sale at low prices. The shop provides a useful service to residents as well as raising moneys to be spent on village activities and facilities.
Newspaper & Can Recycling Scheme This is another valuable service to the village, again run by a volunteer group, raising funds for community purposes. Not only does it raise money, it also saves about a tonne of material from having to be collected by waste collections, at a cost. We are grateful to the residents who make their papers available for collection, and to the volunteer collectors who do the work. Due to illness I was unable to go to the “Old Mill” in August. Mixed reports have comeback. Though the acting was good it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Our next outing is to the “Tivoli Theatre” at Applecross on Friday 9th September. Tickets sold out very quickly on the booking day. This night is a favourite each year. Our October outing is to the Garrick Theatre at Guildford to see “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” by Neil Simon on Friday 7th October. Bookings open Monday 12th September at the JP Stratton Centre at 9:00am. All residents of the Village are welcome to join the Theatre Goer’s Club. No joining fees. Bentley Park Show How are your entries going? Only 6 Weeks to go!! Entries Close on Friday 14th October. The entries have started coming in!! Would you like to help during the show? Library News I am looking for an active resident who would be interested in delivering books and collecting, to either or both Waminda and Mavis Cleaver Court on a Wednesday to be on standby if one of my of regular library volunteers is unable to do it. If I can get a few extra names that I can fall back on, that would be a big help and really it is only if I am in dire strait. We have now got many new books on the shelves, some donated by very generous residents, others with funds from the Op Shop, so if anyone out there with time for a book we would love to welcome you. Bentley Park - Rowethorpe The delegates were concerned about the recent break ins to peoples units. One unit was entered during the night and another through an unlocked door while the owner was in the bathroom. It appears that these burglaries are becoming more frequent. In the media we hear about elderly people being assaulted in their own homes so please keep all your doors and windows secured at all times. It would be a good idea to have the village’s security number by your phone – 62500020. We also discussed Electric Blankets. They should be checked and discarded if any signs of wear are noticed. It was reported that they need to be replaced at least every five years. As I will be on holiday from August 26th until September 23rd there is no meeting of Neighbourhood Watch in September. Joan wishes to encourage others to make donations to the Care Centres, to help purchase equipment that can make the daily routine for residents in care and also the care staff a little easier. “It’s for a good cause and you won’t miss what you didn’t have.” Thanks again Joan!

The Coffee Meeting in August was well attended with 57 Residents responding to the invitation to voice their ideas for the future of the Village. Before that the meeting heard a report from Cath Devereaux that 13 units were currently under offer in Bentley Park and Brian advised that a high level of residents had expressed satisfaction with the function of the VRAC in the recent survey. He then went on to address matters raised at the last meeting: - Blocked sewers – ring security if emergency access to toilets is required. - Mice plague in Clayden Court – more bait has been laid. - Road signs – signs in the whole village are currently under review. - Mail box at admin – not available, but the office will accept mail to post. - Untidiness of shop precincts – management has addressed this matter with proprietors. - New units being fitted with shower rails – are only fitted based on the personal needs of the Resident - Shade sails in Wootliff Way – this item missed the budget allocation for 2011/12 but is carried forward to the next budget. - Washing machines at Cooinda – these have been repaired and are now all functional. - Pemberton Drive gardening/traffic danger - witches hats now supplied. - Plantation Drive request for speed barriers to slow drivers – cannot be used due to service vehicle restrictions. - Security vehicle travelling without lights – operational requirement.
Questions From the Floor Will the Carlisle development have an Open Day to enable residents of Bentley Park to view? Referred to management. Two long term residents complained that the present administration is not honouring the promises made in past years to guarantee access to Waminda. Then, an additional hostel facility had been promised, which has not eventuated. The CEO will be asked to respond personally to this issue. THE MEETING WAS THEN DECLARED AN OPEN FORUM FOR FUTURE PLANS AND WISHES. Safety in the new villas – a resident thought that they could be better designed to eliminate stepping over sliding door tracks, etc. Bins required for recycling materials, shared if necessary. Solar power should be considered. Hot water systems – it was felt that the current gas storage units were wasteful of energy. More attention should be paid to safety issues with footpaths – uneven paving, etc.
It was felt that BGC do not respond quickly enough to safety issues with new units. Dementia facilities needed, so partners are not separated by too much distance. It was felt that the lip on the current bathroom shower screen doors is a hazard. Water usage – individual meters to units would help prevent wastage and roof runoff should be conserved in some way. It was felt that our welfare workers should have input into design of units. Water – a resident felt that roof water should be channelled back to the bores. A resident advised that in South Australia, blocks of units are required to have an underground tank beneath foundations, from which gardens were watered. This should be considered here. A Cooinda resident said that he felt that the village operated on a two-tier system in respect to maintenance, etc. – the rental areas did not receive the same attention as other sections and this matter should be addressed in the future. Two other residents praised the village and said that integration into the village life was as much a responsibility of residents as management. Any successful community requires work. It was then suggested that the village was at present quite fragmented, due to the locations of shop, op-shop, doctors, hairdressers, cafes, etc. It would be much better for social interaction if these facilities could be grouped in one area, where people would have more contact with each other on a casual basis. A request was made for more large shady trees, as the new developments have denuded the site of the established trees and only small ornamentals had been planted. A request was made that when a future plan is devised, it be put on display, so residents are aware. If changes to the plan are made from time to time, these changes should be noted, so residents are kept up to date. New residents should be given a tour of the village and facilities. A resident expressed objection to a suggestion from a previous meeting that we have public toilets in the village – these are historically a problem to maintain and are generally undesirable. The name of the social club to be changed from its present title back to “social club”. Other issues and written ideas were raised which included the following: - Provision for a Carers Respite service/ facility - Road Traffic Consultant to investigate and report on traffic problems
- More Visitors Parking closer to Residences
- More open space with Shade and Seating
throughout the Village (example Pugh
Place)
- Footpaths for all roads in the Village
- Self-opening doors in all community areas
such as Library
- Future home designs to shelter the front
door from driving rain
- Homes with front and back gardens to be
both reticulated to save scheme water
With no further suggestions, Brian advised
that Admissions Manager Leanne Lebrun
would be the guest speaker at the meeting in
September.

Postie Fashions in Kingia Wednesday the 24th of August the Concourse room in Kingia was full to capacity with more than 60 ladies and 1 brave gentleman! SWAN BOWLING CLUB Thursday 12th August was the day of the Club’s Annual luncheon. Well! What a lead up and a very unusual event. Up to a week before the day it was to be held at Kingia. Nancy Brazier who is the social Convener had everything ready to go when she received the news that the conditions of running the event at Kingia had changed. It was financially too expensive for what we wanted. What to do? Organisation went into overdrive. Fist through the good graces of those already booked in the Stratton Centre we had a venue. We thank them profusely. Then volunteers came from everywhere, what a great bunch of members we have. They became servers, stewards and washer uppers for the day. The meal arrived from Tandara on time via Bain-maries. Our special guests Graham Francis and Karen Parker arrived and everything was ready to go. Where was the orange juice? No where to be seen. The President was sent off quick smart to borrow some from Waminda. The meal started great pumpkin soup. Then there was a quiet few minutes when nothing happened. No one could find the main meal, the pork. There was great panic and eventually it turned up and we never did find where it was hiding. Every moment of the drama was relayed via the Chairman, so everyone could follow the story. It was as Annual Luncheon with a difference. The special presentation for the day was the Presidents’ Trophy for the most improved player. This was won by our Secretary Jack Mattews. Jack’s bowling action when he first played was described a cross between Shane Warne and Nick Natanui. He has improved. Well done jack. Members are reminded that the Club’s Annual Meeting is on the 15th of September, to be held at the Leisure Centre at 10am. Also the first Gala Day for the Spring Season is on the 24th of September 2011. All details are on the notice board with a nomination form. The Writing Group We are a group of friends who write for our own pleasure. We meet to share our work and our ideas, and to offer suggestions to fellow members in a non-critical way that helps to improve their work. Most members write about their memories from years ago, and some write parts of their life stories. Some interesting discussions are had following the reading of the work. We meet each fortnight on Thursday mornings at 9.30 am in the Committee Room on the second floor of the Administration Building. One or two new members would be welcome; there are no fees, all you need to do is to bring a piece of your writing to read. Anyone interested would be welcome to come and listen to the readings before deciding to join us. The meetings for September will be on Thursdays 1st, and 15th, and 29th at 9.30am. The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back!
