We Are Church
Together… vision statement guides
and inspires the work of
the Presiding Bishop Eliza-
beth Eaton, bishop of the
Evangelical, Lutheran
Church in America; our
Lutheran church together.
Her strategic plan/her
guiding principles to go
with this motto are:
We are Christian
We are Lutheran
We are church together
We are church for the sake
of the world.
These affirmations guide
her every decision, her
every priority for her time
and energy. Her convic-
tion is that ultimately we
are all church for the world
around us/our neighbor.
You all as individuals and
as FLC are invited to con-
sider, to re-imagine what
it means to be the ELCA
in this third millennium of
being followers of Jesus
Christ. We are invited to
consider, ponder, discuss,
share what it means for us
to be Christians, Lutheran
Christians, and part of the
Body of Christ, called
Faith Lutheran Church.
Bishop Eaton has chal-
lenged each of us to con-
sider 6 questions that will
move the ELCA & FLC
forward into the future. I
invite you to read, and
share your reflections with
Bishop Eaton at
www.elca.org/future.
During our time together
at the annual synod as-
sembly, she challenged us
to discuss together at our
tables these questions:
What kind of church do
we believe God is calling
us to become?
How do we become an
inclusive diverse church
that is inspiring and rele-
vant in our different com-
munities?
What is distinctive about
our identity as a Luther-
an church?
What is most important
to decide in the next 5
years?
These questions are
worth FLC spending
some time to reflect on
and discuss. They are
not far from what your

We Are Church Togeth-
er…
Was also the theme for our
annual synod gathering
where both Bishop Eaton
and Bishop Mark guided us
in conversation and delib-
eration. Our Biblical foun-
dation was
“…for all of you
who were baptized into
Christ have clothed your-
selves with
Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Gentile,
neither slave nor free, nor
is there
male and female,
for you are all one in Christ
Jesus.” Galatians 3: 27-28
Bishop Mark defines our
call to be church together
as being “invited into the
power of living with an at-
titude of gratitude with a
faith that proclaims how
the grace of God in Jesus
Christ compels us to see
the world through the eyes
of Christ… And yes, that
pesky Holy Spirit, keeps
nudging us – calling, gath-
ering, and sanctifying us –
to hear and answer the call
of the risen Christ to be just
as faithfully present in the
midst of our challenges and
our blessings.”
Bishop Mark invites us to
join him in developing an
“attitude of gratitude”. Yes,
he too works at seeing his
call and work through the
lens of gratitude.
I have been inspired by our
Bishop as Dean of the Con-
ference, as pastor of FLC,
and as a child of God to live
into a perspective of grati-
tude for all that happens dai-
ly in my life. There are a
number of you here at FLC
who continue to talk about
our gratitude study and how
is guides your life each day.
I find it a daily challenge
and delight to discover grat-
itude within myself for all
that God gives to me each
day:
God has blessed me with a
spouse who is delightful and
easy to live with. But I for-
get to share my gratitude
Pastor’s Page (cont’d from Page 1)
with him often, especially in
times of difficulty.
God has blessed me with a call-
ing and vocation to be a pastor
with the church, the Body of
Christ, specifically here at FLC.
But I forget or neglect to share
my gratitude for this opportuni-
ty to work alongside you in
ministry. Thank you.
God has blessed me with a fam-
ily – a son, a daughter-in-law,
and a glorious grand-daughter –
Grace. But it is a challenge
within me to remember to share
my gratitude with them.
We Are Church Together grow-
ing in an attitude of gratitude. I
am so very grateful for FLC’s
generosity to send 4 of your
members to this year’s synod
assembly. I am so very grateful
that FLC’s council is working
very hard to be the church to-
gether into the future. I invite
you all to come to the Adult
Study time after worship on
Sundays to discuss and reflect
together how we can live out
being church together for the
sake of the world.

Message from Pastor Carol
I shared a story with you dur-
ing worship about an encounter
between a woman named Ruth
and Carolyn Myss, a renowned
speaker. I thought you might
like to read the full story.
When they met, Ruth was 75
and in a wheelchair with the
most severe case of arthritis
Carolyn had ever seen. Ruth
tells Carolyn how she manages
to live with her body in this
condition.
“I was widowed when I was
thirty-eight years old, left with
two daughters to support and
few ways to do it. I became the
most manipulative person you
could ever imagine. I never
stole anything, but I came close
to it.
“When my older daughter was
twenty-two, she joined a Bud-
dhist community. I raised my
girls in a traditional Jewish
household in New York City,
and she enters a Buddhist com-
munity! Every time she came
over to visit me, I asked her,
‘How could you do this to me?
After all I’ve given up for you,
how could you? We must have
had that conversation a hun-
dred times. Then one day she
looked at me and asked me,
‘Mom, are my clothes dirty?
Am I unclean in some way?
Am I doing anything that of-
fends you?’
“I said, ‘You must be on drugs.
That’s it—they’ve got you on
drugs.’ She responded. ‘Yes,
I’ve tried drugs.’ So you know
what I said to her then? I said,
‘Get me some,’ and she did.
She brought me some LSD. I was
fifty-five years old, and I dropped
acid. Carolyn says she nearly fell
out of her chair. She could hardly
picture her taking LSD.
She continued, “Do you believe in
angels?” “Yes, of course,” I said.
“Good, because that’s what hap-
pened to me next. I took the LSD
and I had an out-of-body experi-
ence. I found myself floating above
my body, lighter than air itself. And
I met this lovely being who said she
was my angel. She complained to
me, ‘Ruthie, Ruthie, do you know
how difficult it is to be your angel?’
“I said I’d never thought about it,
and my angel said, ‘Let me show
you what you look like to me.’ And
then she pointed to my double—
only my double was completely tied
up in thousands of rubber bands. My
angel said, ‘That’s how you look to
me. Each one of those rubber bands
is a fear that is controlling you. You
have so many fears that you can
never hear me trying to talk to you,
to tell you that I’ve got everything
under control.’
“Then my angel said, ‘Here’s a pair
of scissors. Why don’t you cut all
those rubber bands and free your-
self?’ And that’s just what I did. I
clipped every single one of them,
and with each one I cut, I felt this
unbelievable surge of energy come
into my body. Then my angel said,
‘Now don’t you feel better?’ I told
her that I felt lighter than air and
happier than I had ever felt in my
life. I couldn’t stop laughing. My
angel said, ‘You’re going to have to
get back in your body now, but be-
fore you do, I have to show you
something.’
“She showed me the future, and I
Carol Been
Assistant Pastor
saw myself full of arthritis.
She couldn’t tell me why I
would have to endure this
condition, just that I would
have to. But she said she
would be with me every
step of the way. Then she
put me back into my body. I
told my daughter everything
that had happened, and both
of us laughed almost contin-
ually for two months. She
and I have been close ever
since that experience. When
this arthritic condition be-
gan ten years ago, I thought,
oh well, this isn’t being
crippled. I was far more
crippled when I could walk;
I was always so afraid of
being alone, of taking care
of myself, that I wanted to
keep my daughters near me
so I would never have to
take care of myself. But af-
ter that experience I never
felt afraid again. I believe
that my physical condition
is to remind me never to
have fear. Now I talk to my
angel every day, and I still
laugh more each day than I
ever did before.”
Do not be afraid is found
125 times in the scriptures.
If we trust and believe, then
we are truly at peace and
free.

FAITH LUTHERAN IS TER-
MINAL
Did that get your attention?
Our human body is terminal as
we all are aware, but our belief
in the sacrifice of Jesus on the
cross assures us of eternal life.
Unfortunately, this is not true
of our man-made edifices.
They will eventually fall
through age, vacancy or disas-
ter. Our building will eventu-
ally fail but our community of
Faith Lutheran can last as long
as we are willing to put in the
effort to keep it alive.
We are alive
and kicking!!!
If we are depending upon this
mass of wood, glass, steel,
blacktop and dirt to define us,
we are selling ourselves short.
Many of us have spent much
time, many resources and un-
told hours in order to call this
building our church home.
This is not what “church” is all about,
church is about our belief and our
ability to try and live up the standards
which we interpret from the Word of
God and the example set for us by
Jesus. The beautiful building in which
we have been blessed to worship has
been but an adjunct to our worship,
not the focus. It will eventually be
too big, cost too much to run, have
too many major repairs and need ma-
jor refurbishing. Bus we will still be a
worshipping community.
In the forefront of the current coun-
cil’s plan for the immediate future is
that we will continue to worship at
this site, in this building, for as long
as we can pay the bills. There is no
definite timeline but we feel with the
current level of support and the out-
side groups contributions, we are in
good shape to continue as we are for
at least a few years. This does mean a
part time pastor and a reliance on
some volunteer help. In accord with
this will be a continued effort to pro-
vide outreach to the community and
the willingness to share our bless-
ings.
Most other options explored re-
quired the selling of at least a
portion of the property. There are
many obstacles to overcome and
meet if this is to become part of
our operating plan. We currently
have formed three committees, as
an out from the retreat, to look at
goals; to keep the congregation
informed, to look at community
needs and to explore state and
local regulations. These commit-
tees will keep information flow-
ing as it becomes available and
worthwhile.

Why Water?
The global water crisis doesn’t always make headlines. But the truth is that it
claims more lives each year than war.
Globally, 1.8 billion people – that’s about one out of every four people –
drink from contaminated water sources. Unsafe water leads to illnesses that
claim the lives of 840,000 people each year, almost half of whom are chil-
dren under the age of five.
What’s more, women and children spend hours each day collecting water.
This keeps them from school, work, and time with family. This keeps fami-
lies and communities from learning, earning an income, and contributing to
the local economy.
Water facts
Research in eastern Uganda found that a family spends an average of 660 hours a year collect-
ing water. This represents two full months of labor.
Water-related illnesses result in the loss of 443 million school days each year.
Close to half of all people in developing countries are suffering at any given time from a
health problem caused by contaminated water or unsanitary conditions.
2.5 billion people live without basic sanitation.
More people have access to a mobile phone than a toilet.
On average, women in Sub-Saharan Africa walk more than three miles each day to fetch water
for their families. A traditional five-gallon jug, usually used for this purpose, weighs 40
pounds when full!
Your gifts will make a difference! Your support
through Social Concern of the Month for July will
help create healthier families and stronger economies
through projects that provide clean drinking water
through spring boxes and boreholes, support for irri-
gation systems, education about sanitation in rural vil-
lages, and so much more throughout the Third World.

“GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.”
Aug. 28 and Sept. 11
On Sunday, Sept. 11, congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America will have the opportunity to participate in “God’s work. Our hands.”
Sunday and celebrate who we are as the ELCA—one church, freed in Christ to
serve and love our neighbor.
“God’s Work. Our hands.” Sunday service activities offer an opportunity for us
to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in
Jesus Christ—every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of
life—flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.

Generous People Living God's Love
by Working Together One's life tells a story. The telling of one's life as a story more times than not is an offering of many experiences lived and the subsequent lessons learned. This is particularly true in the story of "The Good Samaritan." The story of "The Good Samaritan" told through scripture teaches us that the Samaritan gives himself, his time and his possessions. Let's not perceive a false com-parison of the Samaritan's gifts as though one gift is more important or more readily given than the other. The Samaritan does not hesitate in his giving with sentiments of "I have time to give, but no money", or "Here take my stuff, but don't bother me." The Samaritan gives of himself in a very personal way. Cleaning wounds, bearing another's beaten body, tending to that person's recovery is about as personal a gift as one could give. The Samaritan does not begrudge the giv-ing of his time - time of at least a day, but more than likely it was several days. The Samaritan does not grumble while sharing the precious posses-sions that he has - they too are freely given; wine, oil, bandages, transport and money. Have you ever found it easier to give your time than money? Is it easier to your give money than time? Life and the world happening all about us, our busy schedules and/or our financial situations often times influence our deci-sion processes in either giving. Yet Jesus asks us to give both time and treas-ure...and more! Jesus invites you and I to share a portion of all that we have received! How are you sharing your time, your talents and your treasures? Prayerfully, our lives tell a story very similar to "The Good Samaritan! Prayer-fully, the lessons our lives will teach ourselves and others is that we are gen-erous people, living God's love by working together simply because "We are Church Together"!
