The Trumpet Bless the Neighborhood on Sunday, September 24! Dear friends in Christ, The Fellowship Team is working hard to make plans for the CTK Community Celebration on Sunday, 9/24 from 4-7pm. This event is meant to be a gift to our local neighborhood from Christ the King. This will be the third year we’ve hosted this event, which includes live music, free food, a bouncy house, and kid’s activities. It’s a wonderful way for us to provide a safe place for people in the Birch Lake neighborhood to gather, meet neighbors, strengthen community relationships, and be fed. This year we’ll also be honoring our veterans during the event and thanking them for their service . Please invite your friends and loved ones who are veterans to attend. This is a large event and requires lots of energy and people to make it happen! At our last two community celebrations, we fed well over 100 people. We’re anticipating a need for up to 50 volunteers (if people work 1-hour shifts). The Fellowship Team has created volunteer teams for the event: Set-up Hospitality Food service Parking and housekeeping Kids’ activities (also recruiting face painters!) Take-down Each team has its own leader. You can sign-up to be part of a team after church on Sundays or by contacting the church office. We encourage volunteers to wear CTK t-shirts for the event. We have some extra light blue CTK T-shirts for sale in the office (and will be available after church on Sundays in September) for $10/each. This event is also completely funded by CTK and is free for all who attend. If you’d like to make a special donation to help cover the cost of the event, you may mark it “Community Celebration” or talk with Scott Freburg ( [email protected]). We’re also thankful for donations from local businesses, including special gifts that will be part of a free raffle at the event. The Community Celebration is all about connecting to our neighborhood (which is essential to living out our faith) and it’s really fun. If you have questions about the event, contact me or the church office. We’re excited to host our THIRD annual Community Celebration! Your partner in mission, Pastor Jen A Monthly Publication of Christ the King Lutheran Church September 2017 COMMUNITY CELEBRATION! Socks are required for the Bouncy House - Donations for those who forget would be appreciated! Place them in the basket in the narthex. THANKS!

Preparing Soup to be Served at an area

Homeless Shelter

Some great moments of the trip… by Dan Elholm

The whole group:

Climbing Bear Butte and learning about the Lakota religion and tradi-tions.

Eating ice cream at Armadillo's and going to Dinosaur park and watching a storm roll across the Black Hills.

Watching a Lakota dance ceremony with amazing drumming and costumes!

Walking through Jewel Cave and seeing Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

My work group (Cassidy, Elijah, and another group of kids from a different church):

Favorite moment for me personally...

We were instructed to visit with the homeless people and learn their names at the small shelter where we were serving the soup that we had made. Apparently, many homeless people go weeks without even hear-ing their name! The larger shelters that serve the homeless in the area typically just cycle them through like cattle- as quick as possible. We were also told to invite them to the community barbecue that we were having the next day. I knew Cassidy would have no problem talking to the home-less (picture attached), however, I thought Elijah would just sit in a corner and not say a word. Much to my surprise, as I was serving soup in the kitchen, I looked out and saw Elijah sitting at a table talking to a homeless man - just the two of them! They talked for at least 45 minutes while he ate. Elijah found out that his name was "Dave" and he invited him to the barbecue.

The next day, "Dave" shows up the barbecue and gets in the long line. On his own, Elijah walked over and waited in line beside him and also gave him a gift card to the nearby Hardees. After the event was over and most of the community people were leaving and we were cleaning up, I saw "Dave" searching through the crowd. He was looking for Elijah! When he found him, he reached into his tattered gym bag and pulled out a hard cover novel (a used library book) and gave it to Elijah. They shook hands and went there separate ways.

That night, when we were ranking our day from 1-10 (Elijah had been 3's and 4's all week), he ranked his day as a "9!" His "high" for the day was meeting "Dave" and his low was wondering if "Dave" was going to be okay! It brought Laura and I to tears because we were really not sure if Elijah was really "getting it."

We left the next morning and who was waiting in the parking lot to say goodbye to Elijah? You guessed it, "Dave!"

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to spend a week with the CTK youth. What a great bunch of kids! - Dan
