Outreach Committee News 2016 will be a very exciting time for the outreach effort

of Firelands Presbyterian Church, as our entire

community embraces the food ministry of ComeUnity

Café Ottawa County. The New Beginnings Leadership

Team has been offered the unique opportunity to

involve the members and friends of our church in this

effort to serve those who are food insecure in our area.

Firelands Church is leading the way with a financial

commitment to this exciting food ministry in 2016. It is

hoped that other churches, organizations, and

individuals will follow our lead. Ed Carlson, Joyce

Jagucki and Mary Caracci are all representing our church

as members of the steering committee for the

ComeUnity Café, and Alison Falls is serving on the

personnel committee. Alison has been part of a team

that has interviewed candidates for the chef and

manager positions, and is very excited about the talent

that has come forward for consideration.

When will the café be open for business? No firm date

has been set by the steering committee, although it is

likely that the café will be ready by March 1, 2016.

How can I help? Volunteer to be part of one of the

working groups that are now forming to complete

specific assignments, including personnel, facilities,

finance, marketing, and legal. Longer term, volunteer to

work in the café, be a financial supporter of the café,

and be a “pay it forward” customer at the café. Give a

hand up, rather than a hand out…

What other projects are now under way to prepare for

opening the café?

Our leading candidates are traveling to visit One Bistro

in Miamisburg Ohio

A logo, URL, and Facebook presence have been created

A tri-fold brochure is ready to be used in group and

individual presentations, so that volunteers and

contributors may be solicited

A web site is in development

A grant application has been submitted to Portage

Resale Center, who generously distributes net proceeds

to non-profits at the end of each year

The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council has been

engaged to provide assistance with décor, graphics,

color choices

The Lake Erie Herb Society has offered fresh herbs from

their gardens during the season

Our WPCR sermon broadcasts will continue through the

end of December, 2015. A new introduction has been

prepared by Alison Falls, directing listeners to the

church web site to hear future Sunday services. This

frees up funds to support the ComeUnity Café in 2016,

while maintaining our “listening audience” through the

sermons on www.firelandschurch.org.

Speaking of our web site, 104 visitors consulted the

church web site in the recent 30 days. 55% of them

were visiting for the first time. All visitors looked at an

average of 2.3 pages of our web site, led by sermons

(32), newsletter (28), preschool (25) and contact us

(21). It is reassuring to note that the number of people

listening to sermons on the web site in November

doubled!

November was a very big month for news posted on our

Facebook page:

Linus Quilts “thank you letter” – 109 views

Call for Advent singers – 49 views

Veteran’s Day – 87 views

St. Thomas community meal – 111 views

Rehearsal for Advent singers with Susan Larcey

Celebration reception for Pastor Mark and Jill –

Thank You Bob and Maxine Wilson’s daughter Lisa, a resident of

Kailua, Hawaii, knitted 22 hats for the hat and mitten

tree here at Firelands. Even though her average

temperature is 75 to 80 daily, she has compassion for

the little ones here who brave the Port Clinton winter

temperatures. Thank You, Lisa.

Help Needed! Volunteers needed after church on Dec. 27 to move the

furniture out of the Preschool for cleaning and waxing (a

three-day) process, and then on January 3 to move the

furniture back in. We really appreciate the help!

more people than this needing beds. Individuals/families

our church can manage.

website and our Facebook page. She is keeping up with

the “ComeUnity Café” with Karen Shifflet and Shirley

Carlson now on the committee. Session members are

make to leave money to the church. Firelands Church

changes lives; people are moved to help us out. Next

summer, she, assisted by Ed Bettendorf, will research

and propose a program for this gifting process.

to chair this committee and even though he is Florida six

months of the year, he will form a group to help out

(like the Pavilion) for our main building and making

plans to paint the exterior next summer . Our ever-

spiritual growth. A table is set up outside the sanctuary

for sharing ideas, affirmations and interest in additional

activities.

Sunday evening Vesper Services :An indoor/ outdoor

service was held on October 18, 2015 to provide food

and fellowship. Again friends and neighbors of

Highlights from minutes of Dave Moore, Clerk of Session

FIRELANDS CHURCH SIGNS YOU DIDN’T SEE Poor me. This sign-making job I have is harder than it looks! As I ponder putting up a new message on the Firelands

Church sign, I want you to know that this job should be considered Hazardous Duty. First, there is always the danger

of a concussion as one has to lift up, duck under and avoid banging into the big, heavy plexiglass frame when I work

with the letters. Then there is the never ending battle with the army of spiders that has taken up residence in the

frame. No sense in getting a manicure either as messing with the letters

that get stuck in the tracks would ruin any nail job. I admit to having to

fight the urge to use unladylike language as I encounter any of the

above dangers. It is a church, after all.

A big struggle is deciding what pithy phrase to put up. I hope to make

people think as they read about the Good News of the Gospel. I try not

to spell anything wrong or offend someone, but much to my chagrin,

I’ve done both. Occasionally, I try to make readers smile. That’s when I

really get into trouble. I have a rather snarky sense of humor (not news

to you, I know) so I have to be careful. I thought you might like to see

and, hopefully, enjoy, a few of my rejections. Here are some signs you

didn't see:

5. Our youth groups start at age 50.

4. Don’t give up. Moses was once a basket case.

3. (For labor Day weekend)

Message from God - Stop using my name in vain or I’ll

make the traffic worse.

2. Come in to hear a good sermon.

Our minister is on vacation this week.

1. (My favorite!) (I am SO tempted to use this one.)

It’s Lent.

Get your ashes in here

Read the signs. You never know what you might miss..

It is finally, really, the Christmas season. The decorations are pretty, The music is familiar, reminding us of wonderful

Christmases of years gone by, perhaps even making us nostalgic for by-gone days that never were. All in all it is a

wonderful season. Many people say it is their favorite time of year.

One of the things that make the season wonderful is that it is the season of giving. Actually, if we’re honest most of

us think the season is wonderful not because of giving, but because of receiving. That seems to be a lot more fun.

Giving itself often becomes an enormous hassle. We give not because our hearts demand that we give, but because

the season demands that we give. We have to get out there and do all that shopping because we are expected to do

it. We give because we have to give. Supposedly this is a Christmas custom because the Wise Men took gifts to the

baby Jesus in the manger. If it is the fault of the Wise Men, we might wish we could get our hands on those Wise

Men, shake them or maybe even slap them around a bit, and demand, “What were you thinking taking those gifts?

How do you get away with being called wise?”

Maybe we ought to just stop giving Christmas presents. It would be one way of trying to wrest Christmas back from

the commercialism in which it is caught. For most of us that might not be practical, and it might not accomplish its

hoped-for purpose. Most of us are probably going to have to keep giving Christmas presents. Maybe, though, there is

another approach to winning back Christmas. Maybe we can reconsider our giving, thinking about what we’re doing,

how we’re doing it, and why we’re doing it. Maybe, in addition to presents we have bought, we can think about giving

something significant of ourselves, that may have nothing to do with going to a store or shopping online. Maybe it

could be a gift of time, or a gift of a change we may need to make that would affect someone else’s life in a positive

way. Maybe it would be taking over a household task that would free up some of someone’s time, or relieve them of

stress. There are probably many possible such gifts we could give, and the first part of that giving is the creative work

of thinking about what someone else truly needs, then thinking about what we could give to meet that need. This is a

lot harder than a trip to the mall, but it can lead to a much more meaningful gift – and Christmas – than we might

have otherwise have had. We might even find that it really is more blessed to give than to receive.

Happy giving!

Merry Christmas!

Mark

Preschool News During the month of November we stayed busy reading Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales, learning about Turkeys and

Thanksgiving. We have also been blessed with beautiful weather this month. The kids have loved being able to get out

and play in this unusually warm weather!

We have been working on spelling and writing our names, using our words with our friends, when we should/shouldn't

tell a teacher, and of course letters, rhyming, and counting! We now have a "Tattle Phone" for the children to use

when they feel the need to tattle even when something is not dangerous and no one is hurt.

This students and teachers got to show their team spirit during our Ohio State/Michigan Party! We sang fight songs,

voted for our favorite team, played "Pin the Football in the Goal Posts," and ate yummy tailgate food!

Thank you to all of the parents who provided food and supplies for our Thanksgiving Feast! Everything was delicious!

Christmas DoBeDoBeDo Sometimes when I run into Bob Wilson, he will ask “How you be?” I woke up one morning just before Advent

contemplating the items that are on my “to do” list and the other tasks that need to be added. It hit me that Bob’s

cheerful greeting is really profound.

In this season we are bombarded with commercial suggestions of how to do Christmas better, with more design,

more craft, more gourmet efforts, more warmth, and more organization.

Even at church we try to counteract our secular scurrying with the many “doings” of our missions, finishing scarves

and hats for our mitten tree, buying gifts and food items for Salvation Army and Holiday Bureau, delivering beds,

practicing with the choir, decorating the sanctuary and going to meetings about the ComeUnity Cafe .

So I decided to make a “To Be” list:

Listen to spiritual Christmas music

Spend 15 minutes a day in quiet.

Pare my list of “shoulds”

Take time to walk and pray.

Think of the story of Mary and Martha

Find more time to sit at the feet of Jesus.
