The recently constructed Multiplex was built primarily to accommodate large sporting events. In addition, it may also be the site for large community events which require a vast amount of space such as the Holiday Market. Because of all of the events the building can accommodate, its name was born. Constructed adjacent to the newly renovated Cramton Bowl, the new Multiplex is an

immense indoor sports facility, which opened in June of 2012. The 20,000 square foot bottom floor is on the same level as the Cramton Bowl field and houses two football dressing rooms along with two locker rooms. Other features of the building include a banquet area which overlooks the field of Cramton Bowl, a hospitality area on the South Mezzanine, and the main floor with 57,600 square feet which can accommodate 15 volleyball courts or six basketball

courts, two indoor soccer fields or five indoor tennis courts as well as seating for various events. At the present time, numerous sporting events as well as large community events have been scheduled for the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl. The River Region is excited about having the opportunity to host large events that will make an enormous economic impact on our area.

This month, we mark the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a day that changed America forever. We are called upon to stop and

remember those tragic events across the fields of Pennsylvania, the shining towers in New York City, and at the cradle of our military strength – the Pentagon. 11 Years later, we will remember the people we lost, and demonstrate the perseverance we have shown since that fateful day – an event so despicable – designed to defeat the will and spirit of the American people. In unison, America says "No!" This unspeakable act united us against a common foe called terrorism. Although changing the way we live, it united us against an enemy wishing to destroy our American way. United we stand and together we will never fall. Freedom is not free, and this

month, we show our gratitude to all those who paid full measure, to those who brought help and comfort to those tragic innocent souls, and to those heroes that we may never know by name, only by deeds that will be remembered and honored forever.

Heroes like Captain Paddy Brown. “I refuse the order,” said Captain Paddy Brown/NYFD Ladder 3, after being ordered to get out of the World Trade Center. “I’m here up on the 44th floor and I’ve got too many burnt people with me. I’m not leaving them.” Captain Brown, all of the men from Ladder 3, and the victims they were treating, perished in the tower’s collapse.President George W. Bush three

months later said, “Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifice, and the love that lays down its life for a friend – even a friend whose name it never knew.”“Sir, I refuse the order.” In so

refusing, Captain Paddy Brown, along with countless others died for their nameless but not unnamed friends.Now, 11 years later, the people

of the United States, people in the river region, and people around the world continue to mourn the tremendous loss of innocent life on that fateful day.

Now, 11 years later, thousands of men and women in the United States Armed Forces remain in harm’s way defending our country against those who seek to threaten and destroy our way of life.Now, on the 11th anniversary of

this tragic day, our thoughts are with all of the victims of September 11, 2001, and their families.Their lives, as well as ours, were

changed forever on that fateful day in the early morning when the dew was still on the roses and renewed hope for a new day was replaced with grief and sorrow. Now, 11 years later we stop to remember, to grieve, and to reflect on that day. Let us determine that we will never forget, and in our remembrance and reflection, give praise and honor to those brave souls that stood and today stand in harm's way to protect and defend our American way - those dreams of a better life and a better tomorrow. Thank them for the privilege and the honor to be free. God bless each and every one of you and God bless the United States of America!

The Junior Executive Board of the American Cancer Society hosted their 2nd Annual BlackOut Cancer Party on Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Alley Bar in the downtown entertainment district of Montgomery. Guests of the party were encouraged to wear all black to keep the motto of blacking out cancer. Suzanna Wasserman, the American Cancer Society’s Staff Partner for the event said, “Dress Up, Dress Down, Just Wear All Black.”

The JEB President Leigha Cauthen and Vice President, Rachael Saucer, greeted each patron with a trip on the red carpet and a gift bag with coupons from ExVoto Vintage and Tish’s Cupcakes, gifts and other items from local businesses and the American Cancer Society. Nearly 300 guests of all ages were in attendance for this exciting and moving night. Sponsors gave generously, businesses kindly donated items for the Silent Auction, red ribbons were sold for awareness and all the money collected will benefit programs and services for the American Cancer Society in Central Alabama as well as continuous research to end this disease.

The night was full of laughter, singing, dancing and delicious treats from local restaurants in the Montgomery area. Zoe’s, Gigi’s Cupcakes, and Carraba’s were some of the food vendors who graciously gave their time, and delicious food to make the evening feel complete.

Over 100 items were donated for this event which included weekend getaways at various Marriott hotels and Willow Point Golf & Country Club at Lake Martin from Russell Lands, amazing dinner packages from Bone Fish Grille, La Jolla, Midtown Pizza Kitchen and many more, as well as a trip on the Coosa River. Guests were also able to partake memorable and funny photos in the photo booth provided by Capitol Film Works and dance to the music of Cockeyed Camel. The night ended on a high note with raising $20,000 for the American Cancer Society.

I’ll be honest with you. I have a phobia. Bugs... Arrrrrgh... I hate them. One time, I was lying on the floor of my bedroom wrestling around with my dog, and I felt something crawling up against my back. It was one of those big cockroach water bugs with their big antennae, evil black eyes and 12-inch fangs. I instantly gained superpowers and flew up to my feet, did a triple airborne somersault half gainer and landed twelve feet away. My dog is forever traumatized. It shouldn’t make sense. I’m 6 feet tall. The water bug was a couple inches at best. If it came down to a one on one fight, with the water bug in one corner and myself in the other, it would be no contest. One well placed foot by me, and the championship would be all mine. But phobias are funny. When one of those things crawl by me, a strange tightening sensation goes up my spine starting from my tailbone, activating every nerve with a tingle, which turns into a full on shivering by the time it reaches the top of my head. I feel my hair rise, and all I can do is look around in embarrassment to see if anyone is amused by my impromptu break dance. My brain says it’s just a little harmless bug but my physiology doesn’t agree one bit.

Almost every day in my practice, I’ll see someone come in with a pretty major dental problem who is in a good amount of pain. It is usually a person who doesn’t see the dentist very often because of the same phobia. A vast majority of the time it is because of an abscessed tooth. If you’ve never

experienced this before, I’m truly grateful and I hope you never do. If you have, you know what kind of pain this can be. It’s excruciating, its relentless, treatment for it is more complicated and expensive and you could end up losing the tooth altogether. The saddest thing about it is that it could have been prevented. This big problem just about always starts as a small, comparatively minor problem. In my office, 90% of the patients that I regularly see every six months have no dental issues. The patients that I see who have major dental issues are those who have avoided the dentist for a number of years. When we dentists see someone for the first time, our goal is to get them from where they are, if they have any dental problems, to the 90% who, hopefully, will never have to have another dental procedure besides their routine cleaning.

Phobia of the dentist is common. It’s been studied that over 60% of the population has some dental phobia of some degree. And I really don’t think the other 40% are actually jumping up and down.

Today’s dentistry is constantly changing and improving for the better. The materials and techniques have improved dramatically. We’ve come great strides to giving procedures that are quick, comfortable and painless. In my opinion, one of the best advances we have made is in our ability to manage dental anxiety and generally make your visits more comfortable. I’ve been involved with a number of young dentists who are setting up new dental practices across the country and one of the most exciting things about

it is how important to them it is to make their practice as comfortable and warm as possible.

Gone are the cold, hard, plastic, smelly, scary, rooms and whitewashed, monotone, staff robots set on “miserable.” Even some of us dentists are beginning to get a personality. This trend is just a part of an intention to create an environment that is more comfortable to you, our patients. Unfortunately, we can’t completely eliminate all dental anxiety just from having more plants. For people who have dental anxiety and even true phobias, there are medications we can prescribe for you before any treatment is done. I have had some patients who were visibly shaking when I visited with them. They hadn’t seen a dentist in years because of their trepidation and were forced to come to me because the pain in their mouth had just become too unbearable. When they have dental work done with the help of medication, all of them say “I wish I had known about this earlier!” If you have any dental anxiety, talk to your dentist about it. In today’s dentistry, there is always a way to make your visits as easy, painless and comfortable as possible.

As far as bugs. I can’t help you there…

This has truly been a testy year for individuals trying to live a healthier lifestyle. The moment I see a difference in many client's bodies (fitness camp or personal training), and those same individuals are feeling a difference with his or her physiques, he or she quit on themselves. I'm not speaking for all, but there are so many more people right now that are falling to his or her own mental block and or emotional rage. You cannot allow yourself to lose focus of your goal. Is it a difficult, on going process? Yes. Do I know exactly what you're going through? No. Does it take time to begin seeing results? Yes! Your first initial day of changing your mindset, you knew it would not be an easy task.

Once you entered into the mindset of, "I'm willing and ready to change my lifestyle and body no matter what," you had to have come to the conclusion that there is NO quick fix. When you actually just sit back and think about it, it's not as long of a process as you make it out to be. It just takes getting started on the task, and staying consistent. No! One or two months of boot camp or personal training is not going to get your body exactly how you want it to be. It takes a little more time than that unless your body is already in a position to begin building muscle, definition, and sculpting. If you're not at that level yet, sit back, hold tight, and enjoy the ride.

What is it about the process of obtaining good health, and a better-looking body that individuals can't stay consistent? Most individuals want the results to take place tomorrow. I totally understand the reasons behind why people seek the next best diet plan, weight loss pill, or cosmetic surgery to better the way he or she looks. You what though, it's not a quick fix. I've always been told

that, anything worth having is worth working for. That advice from a young age is becoming more and more prevalent as the years role by. If you don't actually put in the effort to change the way you eat, and or strive to make exercise a part of your daily routine, you probably won't sustain the progress of any fly by diet or surgery. I'm not against any one taking extra measures to enhance him or herself. I also think that it's something to be said when an individual actually takes the proper measures to improve self first, then seek enhancement.

We only express the importance of the process with lifestyle change, because it's a very important step that people need to begin taking more seriously. So many more young (30’s and 40’s) adults, and kids that are passing away from us because of major health related issues. It's sweeping the world, and we're continuously striving to be a small voice to the River Region's community about getting healthier. Stop putting off signing up for that boot camp. Preferably, Resolution Camp! Go ahead and get that membership at your local gym. Planet Fitness, if you don't have a preference. Make the effort to do something. Get up off of the couch, and stop with the excuses. Be like Nike: "Just Do It!"

In the last three articles, a case was made for all of us that we are beautiful,

that we are actually beautiful because we all know “attractive” people turn ugly when they act or say something ugly, and “ugly” people turn beautiful when they act or say something beautiful in a split second. Similarly, we seek to belong when there is no need to ask permission to belong, and we seek to be brilliant, when all of us are already brilliant, while forgetting that brilliance is not pegged on being accurate or correct. Brilliance is a state of mind to know. Brilliant people are not hung on being accurate or correct, so they are glad when they are constantly corrected and hunger to learn things.

Here is the kicker to these peculiarly beautiful concepts. The opposite

of these three concepts that we are ugly, nobody wants us and we are stupid are shocking and can produce unexpected results. These concepts in our mind are dangerous and detrimental to one’s self worth.

For instance, before a woman or man is to be made like she or he is stuck

or enslaved to any relationship in spite of however abusive, especially physically abusive, the dynamics of the relationship is tied in to the above concepts. Before a woman or man is to be broken down, the abuser needs only to do three things: make him or her feel ugly (not beautiful), and he or she does not belong to anyone or anything (not belong), and

she is stupid (not brilliant). The moment these concepts are established in the victim’s head, regardless of the abuse, the victim would never leave. She or he believes she could not figure anything out for herself because she is after all stupid, and nobody wants him or her because she does not belong anywhere to anyone, after all he or she is ugly, who wants him or her anyways? I believe this is the reason why most people in abusive relationships do not leave no matter how much we beg them to leave.

The above scenario is so sad. In fact, people stuck in these places will

remain that way, sometimes to their death, having no clue how to leave because, their intelligence has been made to feel like it has been taken away, and their sense of belonging has been taken away, and their sense of beauty has been snatched away.

On the other hand, if you take a child that has severe physical retardation

and problems, and you told that the child, that he or she is beautiful because our heart smiles when we see them. And say things like, “I am happy you are in my life.” And, we tell the child, “you are brilliant, you can do anything if you put your mind to it,” and if we tell that child, “you are mine, you belong in my life.” I suspect the child’s effort to simply be alive and be the best he or she can be goes up tremendously. If the above affirmation were true for this child, why would it not work for you and me?

I call the above concepts of beauty, brilliance and beautiful as the

wisdoms of our grandparents. Some grandparents will look at their grandbaby and ooze and brag about how beautiful their grandbaby is, regardless of how not attractive the baby is. And these grandparents will glow with pride on how smart their grandbaby is, regardless of whether the child is a special needs child or not. These special grandparents will also claim no matter what, the child is theirs; they will claim ownership of that grandbaby. These behaviors have nothing to do with being neither accurate nor correct; it is simply a claim that empowers the soul.

Finally, if these concepts are this profound, perhaps it can do us good

to heal and empower our own lives by claiming that we are beautiful (not that other people are ugly), or we are brilliant (not that other people are stupid), and that we belong (not that other people do not belong). Since not all of us have grandparents who will claim these things about us, I suggest doing these to ourselves, by simply talking to ourselves. You are beautiful, brilliant and you belong to my world.

This musical is a tribute to church hats and the African American women for whom they are symbolic crowns. Crowns tells the story of a Brooklyn girl, Yolanda, who is sent “down South” to live with her grandmother following the death of her brother due to street violence. She is convinced that this is a punishment she won’t survive! But her grandmother, Elsie Shaw, and her friends, The Hat Queens, use their own life stories to reconnect and ground this young lady.

Forgiveness is letting an offense go.

Forgiveness releases you to move forward without the weight of that hurt, disappointment, anger, and sadness slowing you down.

Forgiveness frees your spirit to live again, your mind to dream again, and your soul to love again. BUT/AND it gives you the absolute power to walk away from or remain with the person/people who hurt you with the confidence that the choice is yours because you chose to forgive.

Everyone connected to us can be impacted when we hold on to the things others have done to hurt us. Sometimes the hurt is intentional. There are some mean people in the world. Sometimes it's absolutely unintended. There are a lot of us who make mistakes.

But regardless of how, when, where, or by whom we are hurt, if we allow that pain to nest in the womb of our spirits, it's just like a cancer. It will eat us up from the inside out and everyone around us will wonder what's wrong. Or we'll spend so much time trying to "medicate" the hurt until we can't function or destroy ourselves in the process.

Education Station

Montgomery is very fortunate to be the home of Churchill Academy, a school which meets the needs of bright and capable children with unique learning differences. These children may struggle with task focus, reading comprehension, handwriting, organization and/or other areas. They have difficulty performing in traditional school

settings; however, they thrive when their social, emotional and academic needs are met in a small, structured and supportive learning environment. At Churchill, the staff focuses on student strengths as well as areas for growth. Many of the students are gifted or talented in specific areas, yet learn, and need to be taught, differently. Churchill Academy is a SACS accredited, full day school that develops an individualized program for each student based on their specific learning profile. It is a supportive atmosphere where instructors teach to student strengths, address weaknesses and encourage strategies for compensation.

Churchill was founded in 1996 by Director, Lisa Hanlon Schroeder. The school’s first home was at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. In 2003 Churchill moved to its permanent home on Ray Thorington Road. Class size is limited so that students are able to receive a significant amount of quality, one-on-one teacher time. Parents are an integral part of the program and are active participants in planning. The curriculum is multi-sensory and designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. For example, reading programs utilized include SRA Direct Instruction, Lindamood Bell Visualizing and

Verbalizing, Recipe For Reading (which is based on the Orton Gillingham approach) and the Edmark whole word program. Each student is taught to read using the method which best suits his or her learning style.

As parent, Martha Rutherford explains, “Since our son Thomas has attended Churchill Academy, he has made incredible progress. The small classrooms, low distraction environment, and individualized lessons are just what our son needs to succeed. The teachers are so talented at targeting our son’s ideal learning

style and they teach him the way he learns best. We have been most impressed with the kindness and compassion of the staff. We are proud to be parents of Churchill Academy and grateful that our child gets to experience education at its best.”

All too often, children hear the negative little voice in their head that tells them they can’t, they aren’t good enough, or nobody likes them. Place the box somewhere it will be seen every day to remind your special kiddo just how special they are! The first time I did this, I was

amazed at how often my little girl would ask me to read and re-read each slip of paper. Soon, she had them all memorized and those

affirming words were internalized into her little soul! Just give it a try and see how powerful words truly can be!!

Take any old box, we chose a tissue box, and help your child paint the base coat with a thick craft paint (I recommend Americana brand) and then let them have fun designing the rest.

While your little one is decorating the box, you begin writing affirming words, things you love about your child, the gifts you see in them, and the promises for their future. Let other family

members get in on it, too! Dad, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, even siblings can all write a few sentences to put into the box.

Technological advancements in veterinary care have allowed

veterinarians to extend the life expectancy of our pets. Also, contributing to the age increase, is the increased care, better nutrition, and exercise pet owners are providing their furry friends. These are just a few of the reasons pets are living longer. As pets age, owners need to be aware of the changes that occur and the additional care needed to provide a pleasant quality of life for their special friend.

SIGNS OF AGING

Just like with humans, pets begin to slow down with age. It may take

your pet longer to get up from a resting position or climb stairs. During exercise, your pet may need more breaks. These are all normal signs that should take place gradually. However, its the signs my clients do not see that are the ones that can rob years of enjoyment for you and your pet.

Start From The Inside:

As pet owners begin to notice a few grey hairs on their furry friend,

signs of internal aging can be more discrete. This is why most veterinarians recommend twice-a-year-veterinary visits. Also, depending on your pet’s age and medical condition, your veterinarian may even recommend more frequent visits for scheduled

tests. Cancers, metabolic disease like diabetes, and organ deterioration (kidney disease, liver disease) are all health problems that can occur in older pets. For this reason, regular veterinary health exams, including complete blood screening and urinalysis, are an essential factor in keeping your senior pet healthy. Most diseases in senior pets can be diagnosed with blood or urine tests. These test provide a treasure trove of information providing your veterinarian proper information to make recommendations for your pet’s future care. It is a wise investment to catch easily treatable problems at the initial onset. In addition, when bi-annual test are done regularly it allows veterinarians the ability to monitor trends and compare panel readings from year to year.

Proper diet and exercise is also very important to the aging pet. All

veterinarians have pet food brands they recommend. Without question, there are some great quality products available. However, what I stress to my clients when feeding an aging pet is to focus on the best digestible protein their budget can afford. Older pets have a harder time digesting poor quality foods, as their organs become less efficient with the aging process. This is why your veterinarian may recommend higher quality foods. The food recommended may cost more initially, however, because these brands are made specifically for the older pet’s digestion abilities, owners feed less....the bag lasts longer....so the costs difference is usually a wash.

A Look On The Outside:

Although your aging friend may want to spend large amounts of

time napping, I have been an advocate of continued exercise. Obesity is one of the major health issues facing senior pets today. Pets need mobility and

weight management not only to ward off obesity but to also prolong arthritis symptoms and joint pain associated with obesity. If pet owners do not have time to take their pets on regular exercise excursions, enroll in a doggie day care program that emphasizes exercise and socialization. I have found in my practice that dogs who are exercised and socialized regularly cope with the aging process better. It may be harder to get the senior cat to participate in exercise, but it is important. I haven’t found a cat yet that would not chase a favorite treat at the end of a string.

Exercise also helps stimulate your older pet’s mind. As your pet

ages, cognitive function begins to deteriorate. Most older pets will be content to sleep the day away only arousing for bath room breaks or feeding times. However, by offering a regular gently walk helps prevent muscle atrophy, and the sights and especially the smells will keep an old friend’s mind stimulated and engaged in the world around him. Be mindful that hearing and sight may not be as keen. This means your pet may not come when you call. For this reason, I recommend keeping your older dog on a leash during exercise sessions. Older dogs can easily become disoriented in unfamiliar areas wandering too far without meaning to.

Aging is a part of life. How we approach this process is correlated

to the process’ outcome. As for the pet owner, advancements in technology, have allowed our pets to live longer and happier lives. By regular veterinarian visits, proper diets, and exercise, pet owner’s should be able to expand the time they have with their beloved furry friend.

When you think of an icon of American automotive history, such as the Corvette, images of speed and the open road are placed in our heads. A certain level of prestige is acknowledged. Maybe you think of having a toy in the driveway, or a track car for fun.

Another staple of American muscle car history is the Ford Mustang. Brought into existence in 1964 after the Corvette, the Mustang was a symbol not of prestige and glamour, but American muscle at a fair price. Now, here we are in 2012 and the symbols are the same but I see a huge problem.

I am a little disappointed with the power gap based on price.

I do not know why it’s not all over GM’s to do list, but the fact that the Mustang has 420hp against the Corvette’s 430hp is a sin. The 2013 Mustang GT base price of $35,000 vs. the Corvette’s base price of $50,000 does not bother me, however, ten years ago, the base Corvette had 90 hp more than the Mustang GT and the base price had about the same $15,000 spread. When did this power shift occur? How could this tragedy be affecting this American icon?

My opinion is when GM filed bankruptcy in 2008 and had to restructure, Ford kept punching forward in engineering and technology. Chevrolet may have lost time in the information technology race by poor management. That cost them and the American people billions of dollars. Then the well-oiled machine called the US Government steps in to save the day and restructures to take ownership of a major section. Not saying this has anything to do with my personal issue with a much more expensive sports car, but the timing is awfully coincidental. I know that the Corvette has far superior performance numbers and is substantially lighter, but come on… really? 10 horsepower? Maybe I’m missing something….

1. Your family configuration changes. If you’re marrying, expecting a baby, or adopting a child you’ll want to protect your growing family with adequate life insurance and disability income insurance. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and Montgomery Zoo are proud to announce that they will open a new shared retail space in Downtown Montgomery. The store will be called Arts Gone Wild. The space will feature merchandise from each organization and serve as a satellite box office for tickets to ASF productions, admission to the zoo and tickets to special events at the museum.

The new store will be located at 200 Tallapoosa Street, across the street from the Renaissance Hotel, in one of the City’s new retail incubators. Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans almost five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy’s unique style – he calls it simply “finger style” – is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band, Tommy plays melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans.
