Greetings to you all. After a very

    f r u s t r a t i n g s t a r t t o t h e

    Springboks World Cup 2015

campaign, the team fought back strongly

against Samoa and Scotland putting the

    Campaign back on track.

This is very much how Our Sheppie

Pride pulled together at the Port

    Shepstone ECL Leadership Camp.

Thanks to Lion Hilton and Lion Lady

Bondi for again convening a successful

weekend and thanks to all the Lions and

Lion Ladies for your support. The

weather also played a role which I

believe it added to the fun and laughter

that the Learners enjoyed. It was great to

see the transformation from muddy kids

to well dressed grownups at the formal

    dinner. Compliments to the Port

    Shepstone Country Club for their

    hospitality and an amazing meal.

    Zone 6 Chairman, Brian Porteous,

visited our Club and I want to

    thank him for his input.

Our very own Master Chef Nico

de Jong and his team won the

    Heritage Day Potjie cookout at

    the Port Shepstone Country

Club. He also did a sterling job

cooking a potjie at the Club for

    the Scotland Game. Thanks to

    past President Al istair for

    providing the entertainment. A

great evening was had with our

    new big screen.

Some of us went down to the

Pont to see the last leg of the

    Matat2Pont. I just want to

    congratulate an exhausted Lion

Charles Wallis for completing the last

leg. He is normally a very energetic

person but you could see how he

pushed his body to the limit. Well done

    Charles.

Our annual Cataract Day project during

    the National Eyecare Awareness

Month of October went off well and we

sponsored ten persons in our area with

the gift of Sight. I visited some of the

patients before the procedure and I was

very proud to be part of such an

    amazing organisation. Thanks to Dr

Steyn and his Team and also the

    Hibiscus Hospital and their friendly

staff for making this a success.

Have a great October and let's see what

the Boks can do going forward.

    Jeff Smith

    Club President

  • Good afternoon Jeff

Colin tells me he has been selected for a

cataract operation. Wonderful news! What a

difference it will make for him.

Thank you so much to you personally and to

    the Lions.

    Marlene

Thank you Sheppie Lions for the amazing,

sacrificial, hard work that you do in our

community, and for the support that you

    give to our school.

    Cornerstone Learning Centre

    Congratulations on an exciting, educational

and motivational Leadership Retreat. My son

was fortunate enough to attend and he

arrived home absolutely exhausted and full of

praise for the Port Shepstone Lions. Always

hungry - he said the food was fantastic. Well

done Ladies! The speakers were remarkable

and thought provoking and the challenges

great fun. Many thanks for continuing to

offer our youth this once in a lifetime

    experience and for your ongoing

commitment to serving the South Coast

    community.

    Lindy Visser

Buttheads Beat: Solly, SA wong side!

SPRINGBOK coach Heyneke Meyer is obviously so wrapped up

in rugby at the moment that he hasnt been keeping up with

    politics.

If he had taken the time to read more than the sports pages in

newspapers he would have realised that our country is wooing

(pun intended) the Chinese, NOT the Japanese.

If we had lost to the Chinese, President Zuma himself would have

thrown a reed dance parade for the team at Nkandla, but the

Cherry Blossoms? Well, the latter certainly proved that Pearl

Harbour wasnt a once off. The Japanese are the masters of

    surprise.

The loss will also teach the Springboks a lesson for cocking a

snook at the Lions. No, not the rugby team that had Sharks

supporters crying into their Castle Lites during the sports bar

curtain-raiser for the Bok game on Saturday, but Port Shepstone

    Lions.

The match clashed with the Lions annual dinner for young leaders

from Sheppie High, a formal affair which took place in the hall at

the Port Shepstone Country Club, adjacent to the pub where fans

(jubilant at that stage) were whooping at the top of their voices.

It was a glamorous affair with the young leaders kitted out in all

their finery and one left with a feeling that our country will be in

good hands in the future. Few seemed to notice the sudden,

deathly hush emanating from the bar at some stage, but one could

    guess the cause. Oho!

Nevertheless, the volume in the bar was soon turned up again, not

in celebration of course, but for a good old Irish-style wake.

Hats off to the dedicated Lions who have organised this

Leadership Retreat for the past 29 years and there is no doubt that

it has helped Port Shepstone High maintain its reputation as a fine

learning establishment in a country where many others are under

the cosh. Port Shepstone Rotary follows suit shortly when they

hold their annual Youth Leadership Course, also based at Port

Shepstone High, which has been going for 53 years.

Its this involvement and support for all schools by the community

as a whole that will insure our countrys future. Unions and

teachers squabbling about ANAs (Annual National Assessments)

and threatening to go on strike is certainly not setting a good

    example to our youth.

There has also been much said in the Herald and social media of

late about teachers being under siege.

By all means, sift out the rotten eggs, but not at the expense of the

vast majority of teachers who are still dedicated to their profession

and pupils who are eager to soak up the knowledge they impart.

Oh, and dont buck the Lions. They have the power to break a

drought. They just have to organise an event and the heavens

open tears from Bok supporters and all.

  • ort Shepstone Lions' 29th Annual Leadership Retreat was held during the weekend of 18-20 September at

PCamp Anerley. 42 Grade 11 pupils, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School 2016 Executive Council of Learners, attended the camp. The full weekend program commenced shortly after they arrived at the camp on Friday with a welcome address by Retreat Convener, Lion Hilton Horsley, a course briefing by Lion

Peter Mc Killen followed by talk on Lions Clubs International by Council Chairman Elect Denis Meyer. This was

followed by, an address by Headmaster Peter Jenkins and the official opening address by Club President Jeff

Smith. The group was thereafter broken up into 5 colour coded teams and took part in various team-building

exercises. After supper the ECL's participated in a very enjoyable ice breaking exercise before heading off to bed.

The ECL's had an early rise on the Saturday morning for an exercise session and a delicious breakfast prepared

by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on leadership theory, communication, goal setting,

an innovative engineering exercise, people to people relationships and conflict management. Various presenters

included Pastor Trevor Downham, Miss Kerry Mc Killen and Lions Jeff Smith and Peter Mc Killen. After lunch the

group participated in a very enjoyable and challenging Amazing Race together with Lions who acted as marshals

and transported the teams around the course. Sunrise Farms once again kindly allowed the club to utilise their

farm lands for this course which was organised and run by Lions Nico De Jong and Kevin Ross.

The Grade 11's arrived at the Lions' Formal Dinner, held at Port Shepstone Country Club on the Saturday night,

wearing glittering make-up, elegant evening wear, and smart suits. The main hall and tables had been beautifully

decorated by Lion Lady Jenny Vogt and her team. Emcee Lion Peter Mc Killen did a superb job in explaining the

various formalities and protocols associated with a typical formal Lions gathering. Guest speaker for the evening,

South Coast Herald Manager Bevis Fairbrother, motivated everyone present with his inspiring message. The

Amazing Race floating trophy was presented to the blue coloured "Royals Team". The event was once again a

    resounding success.

  • n Sunday, the group,

Oonce again had an early start for exercise and breakfast. Then it was on to

    morning devotions with Mr

    Damian Williams and more

    lectures on motivation and

    choices presented by Lion

    Hilton Horsley, ECL in action

    and their evaluation of the

    weekend. The af ternoon

    session was dominated by the

    strenuous and very enjoyable

    obstacle course which was

    marshalled with much laughter

by all Lions present. The recent

    rainy weather and muddy

    conditions added to the fun.

    The Re t rea t was , by a l l

    accounts, a great success and

    hats off to Course Conveners,

    Hilton and Bondi Horsley and

    their dedicated team of Lions

    and Lion Ladies. The entire

    project was funded by the

    Club's charity account together

    with generous sponsorships

    and support . Leadership

    development of our youth is

one of the core projects of

    Lions Clubs International and

this project is one of the

    signature service projects of

    the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

  • The 2nd South Coast Tourism Awards were held

on the 23rd September at Umthunzi Hotel in

    Umtentweni. Celebrating excellence and

recognizing individuals and businesses for their

commitment to tourism, these awards brought

together media, stakeholders, government and the

corporate sector in a rather refreshing way a Night at

the Movies where attendees were required to dress the

    part.

The event was emceed by no other than cricketing

legend, local businessman and South Coast Tourism

Area Chair for Hibberdene, Pat Symcox. Admittedly,

the audience found it difficult to concentrate as said

Symcox was dressed up as John Wayne as he brought

the house down with many of his quirks and tourism

    related comments and stories.

Presenting the awards was Joy Crutchfield in her role

    as South

    C o a s t

    Tourisms

Chair and Justin Mackory, although disguised and dressed as Rocky was

officially there in his capacity as CEO.

Also in attendance was the Ugu District Mayor Councillor Gumede, the

Hibiscus Coast Mayor Councillor Mqwebe as well as Ward Councillors

who participate on Tourism Area Committees and various Municipal

Managers from District and Local Municipalities.

22 awards and special acknowledgements were announced, including

the top award of the evening - the Event Of The Year which was this

year presented to the Lions Club of Port Shepstone in recognition of the

outstanding success of the 2015 South Coast Lions Show. Lion Jean and

Lion Lady Myrna Masson represented the club at the event and Lion

Jean proudly accepted the award on behalf of the club.

TCompetition. The team comprised Lions Nico De Jong (Master Chef), Charles Wallis (Assistant Chef), Ralph Gallagher and Denis Meyer (Potato peelers). The team was very well supported by fellow Lions and their families who attended en masse to enjoy the superb weather and wonderful atmosphere at the club. The

Potjie competition was indeed a Proudly South African event. All the teams "cooked up a storm" in their potjie

pots. Many thanks to Saffron Chefs and Coca Cola for sponsoring prizes towards this Heritage Day competition.

First prize - A bottle of Richelieu Brandy sponsored by Saffron Chefs with Coca Cola sponsoring 2 x cooler

boxes, 1 x set of braai tongs and a case of Coca Cola dumpies - Winner - The Sheppie Lions Team. They also

Third prize - 4 x Breakfast vouchers (R45 each) sponsored by Saffron Chefs with Coca Cola sponsoring a case

of Coca Cola dumpies - Winner - Wozani Berg Gasoline Team

An On the Spot prize was awarded as well, with Keegan Pieterse doing undercover judging for the cleanest area,

not stirring the potjie and for general spirit of the team and this was won by the Curnow Garrun Team. The prize

for this category was sponsored by The Pasta Factory, Agent - June Surtee-Myers.

The Potjie Competition was a resounding and fantastic success, and the participants of the day indicated that

they would definitely be back next year!!

DHolmes came across a delightful charity shop run by the Antrim Coast Lions Club. This amazing project has already raised thousands of pounds for community relief projects, including the building

    of a house in Bosnia!

They also attended a combined service club meeting whilst on board the

Queen Elizabeth liner together with members of other service clubs and

shared ideas about community service and fundraising initiatives..

Lion Mervin and Lion Lady Lyn Curnow once again visited

their second home in Kusadasi, Turkey during September.

    restaurants.

  • Congratulations to Lion Charles Wallis for successfully

completing stage 3 of the inaugural Matat 2 Pont Enduro. An

extremely exhausted Charles, together with his seconds

Lions Clayton Curnow and Ralph Gallagher were grateful to make it

to the finish line after a very hot and dusty day on the road.

The inaugural Matat2Pont enduro came to a thrilling conclusion at

The Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward on Saturday 26th

    September.

Three days of riding which started in Matatiele culminated with

enduro, adventure and plastic bike riders speeding over a floating

    bridge to the finish line.

The Alfie Cox signature event hosted by Powasol Xtreme Eventing

and The Pont attracted locals and riders from far and wide, including

Brit Keith Maude, who travelled to South Africa just for the event.

The legendary Cox upped the thrill factor with burnouts on a KTM

    990 adventure and a 250F enduro bike.

Klint Mills, Managing Director of Powasol Xtreme Eventing, said the

fun ride was an overwhelming success.

Riders arrived at the Matatiele Golf Club on a relatively warm

Wednesday (23rd September) afternoon. They rose early on

Thursday morning and prepared themselves for a journey of note for day one. They were met by Municipal Members under the Red Bull

Arch and led out for a parade through the town of Matatiele with waving spectators and public with beaming smiles to see this new

spectacle that has hit their very humble town. They enjoyed a decent 126km Plastic Bike trail and an 180km Adventure Bike route

which led them to the Kokstad Rugby Club. In Kokstad they enjoyed a meal

and an early nights rest. The route from Kokstad to Harding was a little

easier for the riders but still had challenging moments along the way.

Riders were so excited to ride some of the faster Donkey Paths, those theyre

expected to race in at the 2015 Roof of Africa. Harding to The Pont offered

prestige riding in the heart of the Old Transkei and KZN farmlands.

The finish at The Pont had to be the most memorable moment for all riders

as they had to cross a floating bridge to the finish line.
