Lionism is alive and well throughout Africa. The members of the Lions Club of Lobatse in Botswana continuously

carry out sight screenings in and around the schools in Lobatse and even further — to a distance of about 40 kms. Last November, L i o n s d i d v i s u a l a c u i t y t e s t s f o r approximately 380 students at Chichi Community Junior Secondary School in Molapowabojang village. About 34 students needed prescription eyeglasses. The club has earmarked funds from the activity account for procuring eyeglasses for the students in schools.

They work in conjunction with Lions Operat ion Br ightsight, a Lions eyeglass recycling center in South Africa. They send scripts and LOBS prepare the glasses as per the script. One of the members makes the 500 km trip to Johannesburg, South Africa when the glasses are ready, and they a r e t h e n d i s t r i b u t e d t o t h e beneficiaries. Not an easy task, as sometimes Customs authorities at the borders cannot believe what Lions do!

This distribution of eyeglasses to students was SPECIAL. Children generally are not aware that there is a problem with eyesight and therefore may perform poorly in class. With this in mind and wanting to make a difference in the lives of these

students, a right moment came by when they heard a Government Minister was going to address the people in the very same village. With a little pressure and pleas put on the Personal Secretary they were granted 20 minutes of the Minister’s time. Aha but that was not to be…… Given a chance, Lions will promote Lionism at any cost, and the distribution took all of 60 minutes of the time. Was the Minister unhappy? No. Not only was he telling the pupils

how special spectacles are and how they must take care of the glasses, but was now praising the Lions Club of Lobatse for this noble gesture. In the end, the Minister and his entourage were happy, and most of all the children were now seen trying to read the car registration numbers in the distance……. What a satisfying project it has been!!! We served children in need and also helped with sight. Killed two birds with one stone…. (Article by Lion Vimla Ramkumar - Lobatse Lions Club)

ort Shepstone Lions hosted their 28th Annual Leadership Retreat from 26-28 September at Camp Anerley.

P40 Grade 11 pupils, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School 2015 Executive Council of Learners, attended the camp. The full weekend program commenced shortly after they arrived at the camp

on Friday with a talk on Lions Clubs International by Past District Governor Denis Meyer. This was followed by a course briefing by Lion Peter Mc Killen, an address by Acting Headmaster Dale Salotto and the official opening address by Club President Alastair Warman. The group was thereafter broken up into 5 colour coded teams and took part in various team-building exercises. After supper the group participated in a very enjoyable ice breaking exercise and a sing-a-long before heading off to bed.

The group had an early rise on the Saturday morning for exercises and a delicious breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on leadership theory, communication, goal setting, innovative engineering, people to people relationships and conflict management. The various presenters included Pastor Trevor Downham, Miss Kerry Mc Killen, Mrs Sharon Smith and Lions Jeff Smith and Peter Mc Killen. After lunch the group participated in a very enjoyable and challenging “Amazing Race” together with Lions and Lion Ladies who acted as marshals and transported the teams around the course. Sunrise Farms once again kindly allowed the club to utilise their farm lands for this course which was organised and run by Lions Kevin Ross and Dale Mc Garry.

The Grade 11's arrived at the Lions' Formal Dinner, held at Umthunzi Hotel in Umtentweni on the Saturday night, wearing glittering make-up, elegant evening wear, and smart suits. The guest speaker for the evening was Regional Magistrate Mr Johan Bester who motivated everyone present with his inspiring message. The evening event was once again a great success and the Grade 11's were exposed to the formalities and protocols associated with a typical formal Lions event.

The Retreat was, once again, a huge success and hats off to Course Conveners, Hilton and Bondi Horsley and their dedicated team of Lions and Lion Ladies. The entire project was fully funded by the Club's charity account and with generous sponsorships and support. Leadership development of our youth is one of the core projects of Lions Clubs International and this project is one of the s i g n a t u r e s e r v i c e projects of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our fellow Lion and friend in service, Lion Hans Wagenaar who was Called to Higher Service on Monday 09 September.

Lion Hans lost his long and brave battle with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences to Lion Lady Marie and the family. Lion Hans joined the Port Shepstone Lions Club in 1988 and, for the past couple of decades has been the project convener of the Port Shepstone Lions' Annual Blind Bowlers Tournament.

Lion Hans achieved success, lived well, laughed often and loved much; he gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of little children.

He filled a niche and accomplished his task, He has left the world better than he found it,whether by a brighter flower, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul.

He always saw the best in others and gave the best he had; his life was an inspiration, and his memory will be a benediction.

Hans was a LION.

Rest in Peace dear colleague - till we meet again..........Called ToCalled To

District Governor Martin Rundle officially visited the Port Shepstone Lions Club’s September Club Meeting. During his address he indicated that he has already visited 8 clubs in our District and on 7 of these visits was accompanied

by 4 members of our Club. He thanked PDG Denis, LP Alastair, ZC Andre and DC Kevin for accompanying him. He plans to visit East Coast, Cowies Hill, Pinetown, Hilton, Kloof, Durban Host and Scottburgh during October and invited members to join him on his visits to these clubs.

DG Martin stated that he has witnessed very active clubs that are involved with a variety of community service projects. Regardless of how low their membership number are, these clubs are very involved within their respective communities. He encouraged all our members to follow LP Alastair's goal of increased service as some of our members are missing out on the rewards of community service and being a “Light in the Dark” for many underprivileged people. He pointed out that membership extension within this club is not really a problem as the club has one of the highest membership totals in the country. He emphasized the importance of caring for our fellow members and their partners in service and pointed out that politics was the main cause of loss of membership in many clubs within our District. Club members were encouraged to avoid personal conflict and avoid dragging down other members of the club. He invited members of our club to attend the Kokstad Lions membership drive and show our support which will assist them in attracting new members.

DG Martin encouraged as many members as possible to attend and support the Midyear Conference weekend and thanked PDG Denis for his efforts so far in organising this project. He ended off by thanking the Club for agreeing to host the 3rd Council Meeting in February.
