I hope everyone had a g rea t Christmas and all have by now fully recovered from celebrating the arrival

of 2016. It is back into work mode for a lot of us and I am glad that everyone that travelled has returned home safely.

Congratulations to Lion Mervin Curnow for reaching the 70 year milestone. What a great party it was at the Lions Den. Thanks Mervin, you are a Legend. Congratulations also has to go out to the most important Lion, out barman Lion Brian Eva, for getting engaged. All the best Brian to you and Talitha.

Thank you to those Lions and Lion Ladies who assisted with the food collection, and also a big thank you to Graeme Mulligan from Harbour View Spar for making this possible. This was distributed to Bread of Heaven and also Raj Mahabeer’s feeding scheme.

We are now entering the last six months of the current Lionistic Year and this is a very busy time for our Club. There are some challenges ahead for us with trying to organise the Lions Show and the Lions Golf Day at the high levels set during 2015. We have had the first Show meeting and I want to thank Lion Jean Masson for “volunteering” to convene this year’s event. The portfol io holders have been identified and now it is just to see, once we have met with Hibiscus Coast Tourism, if they will come forth with a generous sponsorship as before. Please can we all help with assisting Lion Lady Jane with getting Exhibitors for this year.

The bingo will start shortly and thanks to Lion Kenny and all the Lion Members and also our Lion Ladies that put in every effort to make this an ongoing success. Our Bingo numbers could grow now that Lion Merv qualifies fully!!

The Multiple District Convention is coming up shortly and I urge as many of us to register for this as our very own PDG Denis Meyer will be inducted in as the New Council Chairman at this Convention. A massive honour for our club.

In closing I would like to thank all for the assistance for the first six months and look forward to your support for the next six months.

Jeff SmithClub President

Dear Sheppie Lions

It has been a pleasure for us to assist your club as a platform to show the community the great work the Lions do to uplift the community and help those who need it the most.

We wish all your club members a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

On Saturday 28th November, Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies hosted their 25th Annual Christmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens at the Port Shepstone High School Hall.

A total of 93 senior folk from the Flower Foundation, Anerley Haven, Mbango Valley (Villa Bruno) and other residences in the area were transported to the event by Lions members.

During the event, the guests were serenaded with Christmas Carols and other beautiful melodies courtesy of Sue Neilsen on the keyboards, and singers Marie Webster, Jurgens Human and Nils..

The guests were served a delicious Christmas lunch prepared by the Sheppie Lion Ladies. Santa Clause, aka Lion Clayton Curnow and Club Mascot, Melvin the Lion, aka Lion Laurie Lourens presented each guest with a sponsored Christmas gift bag filled with wonderful presents.

The whole event was, once again, a huge success thanks mainly to project coordinator Lion Hilton Horsley and his team of dedicated Lions and Lion Ladies. Port Shepstone Lions are extremely grateful to Sue Neilson for once again providing the live music as well as Port Shepstone High School for allowing the Club to use their hall and facilities. The Lions would also like to thank the Hostel catering staff, Sunrise Farms, the Frey family and Fresh Meat for their sponsorship, assistance and support.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our fellow Lion and friend in service, Lion Mike Marshall who was Called to Higher Service on Sunday 29th November 2015.

Lion Mike lost his long and brave battle with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lion Lady Debbie, Sarah and Jonathan.

Lion Mike joined the Port Shepstone Lions Club in 2014 and, for the past year has been instrumental in resurrecting the

club’s diabetes awareness project.

Lion Mike achieved success, lived well, laughed often and loved much; he gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of little children. He filled a niche and accomplished his task, He has left the world better than he found it,whether by a brighter flower, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul.He always saw the best in others and gave the best he had; his life was an inspiration, and his memory will be a benediction.

Mike was a true LION.

Rest in Peace dear friend - until we meet again..........

uring the 2015 Annual Christmas DLuncheon for senior citizens, Club

President Jeff Smith presented an

appreciation plaque to the Frey family who, for a

number of years now, have been sponsoring the

lovely Christmas gifts (to the value of R200-00

each) for the seniors. This outstanding initiative

was spearheaded by the late Lothar Frey who,

prior to his death, requested that his family

continue to support this event. Lothar’s son,

Nicholas Frey accepted the plaque on behalf of the

family.

n 13th December, Harbourview Superspar in

OPort Shepstone once again kindly allowed the Port Shepstone Lions to collect food

donations for the needy.

Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies worked in shifts at both entrances in order to promote the project and provide descriptions of what groceries were required. They also used to opportunity to promote and sell their delicious Lions Christmas cakes.

The generosity of the public was once again outstanding. Numerous shopping trolleys were filled and a number of cash donations were made. The cash donations were utilised to purchase additional items required and food hampers were packed by members of the club for distributed to various needyfamilies and institutions in the Port Shepstone area.

provides nutritious meals for 400 children every Saturday

at Mdlazi Primary School. This school is in a rural area near

Port Shepstone. The children, aged between 3 and 12

years face extreme poverty due to unemployment. More

than fifty percent of these children come from child

headed households.

Club President Jeff Smith handed over food donations to Pastors Lawrence and Jefferies from Bread Of Life Ministries (South Coast). The donations will go a long way towards a l l ev ia t i ng food sho r tages i n many impoverished communities.

Port Shepstone Lion Ladies once again gathered in the Clubhouse kitchen during January to prepare frozen meals for residents of the Flower Foundation home for the aged. Their monthly efforts are greatly appreciated by the residents of the home.

finished school. Mervin has been running his Port Shepstone-based

business since 1984.

The Curnows have come a long way on the South Coast and are
