Anna DiStefano and Colin Woodruff are National Merit Scholarship semifinalists; Matt Dougherty, Christopher Hudson, and Mary Pratt are named Commended Students by National Merit Program

Fairview's Anna DiStefano and Colin Woodruff were recently announced as semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They are two of approximately 16,000 students nationwide qualifying for the honor. They will have an opportunity to continue in the competition to become a finalist. Nearly 7,500 scholarships worth about $33 million will be offered next spring.

DiStefano and Woodruff joined about 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools that entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 PSAT exam. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors taking the exam.

Dougherty, Hudson, and Pratt are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the test. Approximately 34,000 students of the 1.6 million test-takers received this award nationwide.

CP 9 Social Studies Classes Review the US Map

The CP 9 social studies students in Mrs. Nies's classes began the year with a quick review of the United States map. Because the bulk of the curriculum centers on the United States and its history, recalling where states and important bodies of water are located is imperative. The students enjoyed a first day activity where they were transformed into a "human map" of the United States. The students were given a series of different items (a can of Coca-Cola to represent Georgia, Mickey Mouse

ears to represent Florida, a toy car for Michigan and so on...) and then were asked to fill in a roped-outline of the United States. They had fun guessing which state the

items symbolized and having to estimate where their state was located on the map. This foundation of US geography will be helpful over the course of the semester.

CP 12 English Classes Research Influential

People of the Early 20th Century

Mrs. Nies's CP 12 English classes recently completed research presentations on

influential men and women from the time period of 1914-1945. The students were

encouraged to select someone of personal interest and to share their findings with

their classmates in a lecture style format. This background knowledge will give the students a foundation for the time period

of literature we will be studying for the first month of the semester.

Understanding the ideological trends, technological advances and the major

events taking place during this period of history will help the students to connect

significant events and people to the short stories and poems of the early 20th

century.

The AP English Language and Composition students started the year with a review of their summer reading, and they are now engaged in a study of the foundational elements of rhetoric. The students have created skits, presentations, and written pieces to demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts. The students have also written and revised college essays that they will submit to their respective schools.

AP English Language and Composition

The Applied English IV/Keystone Project students began the year by writing a personal statement that can be used for their future careers. Currently, the students are studying American Literature from 1914-1945, and they are making presentations about famous figures from the time period.

Applied English IV/Keystone Project

Students in Honors English II are presenting summer reading connections, learning about effective communication and presentation skills, analyzing William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies, and learning Greek and Roman roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Literary elements the students are discussing include plot, characters, metaphors, theme, symbolism, and allegory.

Honors English IINon-Verbal Communication Lord of the FliesSummer Reading

Students in SAT Prep English are taking practice tests using Khan Academy and the College Board resources that now personalize a student's practice based on his or her strengths and weaknesses. They have reviewed strategies that they can use when they take the sample and the actual tests. The students are developing their vocabulary by reading, rather than memorizing. They are familiarizing themselves with the structure and content of the test.

““The Change Train”

Through “The Change Train”, my group hopes to communicate that being the change has to start with you! Spreading love and kindness to a world that is grim and dark is a necessity. We painted a tree that represents change in a person, and how that could be spread to others. Also, each car of our train has a word on it that, when linked with the other cars, writes out:”Be the Change.” I believe that all the members of the group bonded through this experience, and enjoyed messing up and thinking of ways to make our mural look better.

““Bee the Change”

“Bee the Change” is communicating a one to many chain reaction to positively influence the community. The mural is showing that you can do one small action, like a smile, that can cause a chain reaction. You never know what one small act can do for the community around you. The one bee that is starting the chain reaction is yellow because it is radiating happiness, while the bees that are sad are dark blue. As the bees start to benefit from the one bee they begin to change from a dark blue to light blue. The beehive represents the community or the common place. Overall, my group enjoyed each other's company and the fun tasks of creating a mural. We are proud of the entire mural and love the outcome, especially the Beyoncés. In conclusion, the mural represents a one to many change reaction.

““The Seedling”

Our choice of mural was chosen by our group to positively influence the Fairview School District. This year's theme at Fairview School District, is meant to help show the change you want to see in the world. With positivity, our mural is meant to impact others, for the better. We had lots of fun creating our mural. In our piece, we used a variety of colors to express joy through our mural. We loved mixing all of the colors, and more. We enjoyed making it, and put that enjoyment into the mural. In our mural, we decided to create a young boy, who plants a seed, in hopes that the seed will turn into a beneficial apple tree. This symbolizes that one small act, not only can benefit the doer, but can benefit more. In our mural, we show this by having a main character plant an apple seed, and as the tree grew, so did he. As he grew, he tended to the tree. As he was doing so, he met a girl, and they soon grew together over the years. Many years later, they had a child. In all this time, the apple tree grew big and strong, and now benefited his whole family, and more. One small act, such as planting a seed, can grow into a big and beautiful thing, like the apple tree, and help change the world one small step at a time.

““Be the Change!”

The mural that we have created is trying to show that to change it only takes one person to start that chain reaction. Like in our mural, the first man on the moon was a great accomplishment in American history, and it started with on person. We have the astronaut in space with the words Be the Change written inside the Earth. Also we have the moon in the background showing that he was the first man on the moon. Each of us had an important role in the creation of the mural. All us helped with the background, but Alec did the moon, Eli did the astronaut and some of the stars, Luke did the rocket ship and some of the stars, Cole did some of the earth and stars, and Corey did some of the Earth and background.

““The Tree of Change”

Our mural hopes to show the community that they can influence people and things around them in a positive way through change. It displays a cherry tree, which symbolizes change, and the person directly below the tree represents the initial change. On either side of the cherry tree, there are dead trees that have not yet been affected by the initial influence. Our group enjoyed mixing paint the most because we know that we exhibited teamwork and cooperation so now we are finally ready to paint! We hope that our mural inspires people to change themselves and influence others for the better.

““Breaking Sadness”

The theme is to stay say positive and happy even if it's hard. This mural shows you can overcome any dark with a little bit of light. She's changing her clothes showing that she's changing her personality. The people and the quote was our most enjoyable thing to paint. The painting meant a lot to us because it is similar to our stories. The quote we wrote means that if you change the way you think good or bad you can change the world and how you see it.

““Changing the Game”

The mural is showing that you can be yourself and change the stereotypical system that exists in the school. Everyone is afraid to be themselves and show what they actually enjoy in fear that they'll be shot down by peers, but we're trying to change that. Some visual clues to show this meaning include all of our "nerdy" sides that others may not approve. We're CHANGING the system by being ourselves. Our favorite experience in this project is just being able to express what we all enjoy most and help people be themselves along the way.

““Changing the World”

Our painting “Changing the world” is based on two people listening to an inspiring speech and deciding to be the change by giving money to a homeless person and volunteering as a firefighter. We decided to do this because all it takes is one person to change many people's thoughts. Our mural is meant to inspire change and to let people know that they can change people's mind by just saying something. This shows the Fairview School District theme by showing one person on a stage inspiring change. Our mural shows people they can change people and that they can “Be The Change.” We enjoyed painting the middle window because we did it together.

Spanish 2 and Spanish 4

In Sra. Froehlich's (Profe's) classes, we are creating more to enhance learning. By creating visual vocabulary charts in both classes, we address a variety of learning styles. In Spanish 4, students created a music video about health and accidents. In Spanish 2, their next unit will use video to create a cooking show in Spanish.

Español 1 Spanish 1 has just completed their first chapter on basic conversation. The students practiced in class by writing conversations, acting them out, and watching a native speaker introduce themselves. They have come to find out that in order to learn a language you must be able to speak it, read it, but also SPELL IT correctly. We also finished the film "WALKOUT" where the students learned about the 1968 Chicano movement which followed the civil rights movement. We are currently discussing Latin influence in the United States and where we can find such influences.

AP Spanish LiteratureAP Spanish Literature students would all agree that this image sums up our class. Just kidding... These students have come in extremely open-minded and ready to attack the rigorous list of literature that we must read and understand. We are completing our first theme which is: Interpersonal relationships. We must look at how they affect the individual and their perception of the world in each story. We have read 8 short stories and 1 poem. In each one we looked at what were the relationships, discussed relationships in our own lives, and how our prior knowledge about the author helped us to understand the direction the story went in. We also watched the film "Mar Adentro." After completion of the film I asked the students this: "What in your life keeps you going and moving forward when life gets tough?" Although a small class the intimate setting allows for good conversation and intense analysis of all the imagery and metaphors that can be found through our adventures in Spanish literature.

What is the ICC?

The International Coastal Cleanup takes place each September around the globe. The Ocean Conservancy compiles the data gathered each year and releases an annual report. In 2015, 791,366 volunteers worked together to gather 18,062,911 pounds of trash. The number one item found? Cigarette butts. Over 2 million of them. To learn more about what was found in last year's ICC, and find out how you can help, head out to the Ocean Conservancy website: http://www.oceanconservancy.org/our-work/international-coastal-cleanup/2016-ocean-trash-index.html.

Refocus Program

Mr. Matthew Hammond has been a friendly and welcoming addition to the Refocus Program

where he joins Mrs. Kim Enterline in providing ongoing support to all FHS students. This

program offers a proactive approach to dealing with the very diverse individual needs of

students. Mrs. Enterline and Mr. Hammond provide the encouragement and academic support

that is essential to student success by providing flexibility in a customized approach for each

student. The Refocus Room is considered by many students to be a safe environment which

allows them to find the time and space to rebound when life or school becomes overwhelming.

Through a collaborative partnership between the Fairview School District and the Sarah Reed

Children’s Center, the counseling portion of this unique program is based upon the “Sanctuary”

philosophy which is designed to address the students’ social and emotional needs which are

deemed necessary for positive growth.
