WHAT AN ATTITUDE!

Have the same attitude as Jesus Christ. Seems simple enough but how do we attain a healthy view of life when life is at times so unjust. Christ never said that circumstances will always be fair. He did promise that He will be there always. His promise is that by following Him we find a way to understanding and peace. Christ suffered and died so that we might live forever. Was it fair to Him? Was it proper that our sins caused His saving actions? Jesus decided to suffer and die for us out of love for His Father and an eternal desire to show us how to love. Jesus found His joy in doing the Father’s will. His trust in God the Father revealed to us how to be unselfish and humble. His dying and rising continue to prove to us how wrong we are about justice and truth. We need to convert our ways of thinking and acting. Only through Christ will we find a new attitude.

TWO INTO ONE COLLECTION Beginning in November, we will take up only one col-lection at each Saturday/Sunday Mass. Any special collections will be placed in the collection with the regular Sunday envelopes and loose bills and change. Please don’t forget to add the Stars envelope to what used to be the “first collection.” Thank you for your patience and understanding.

During the recent storms, some trees in the park fell onto the Blakiston Street fence in the Cemetery. They are covering several graves. The City was ad-vised of the situation and eventually will remove them.

LORD, PROTECT OUR TROOPS Please pray for the following members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan that Our Lord protect them and all our troops around the world and keep them safe. Call the rectory to place your loved one on this prayer list. Jonathan Castro, David Toms, James Kash, Mark O’Con-nor, Kevin Sproge, Scott Druckrey, Vincent Heeney, Anne Jachinowicz, Vincent Simonetti, Sean Patrick Maguire, Jason Pascale, William Bush, Joe Bromley, Ross Peterson, George Reichart V, Steve Wszolek, James Gormley, A.J. Jacquot, Patrick Connors, Joseph C. Spado, Cheryl A. Stevens, Thomas Hicks, III, Jay Fuller, Austin Leach, John Monterosso, Nicholas R. Greco, William Lindenmuth

LET OUR HEARTS BE LIFTED HIGH! The Eucharistic Prayer opens in a lyrical dialogue between the priest and people. “The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.” Here, the familiar greeting becomes more solemn. Poised on the threshold of the Mysteries, priest and people to-gether recognize that they are about to be envel-oped in Christ’s own prayer to the Father. “Let our hearts be lifted high. We hold them before the Lord.” Every heart is held aloft: nothing is held back. “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just.” In ancient times, this response had the quality of a thunderous affirmation, solemn and spontaneous all at once. The Preface follows: a song of immense ju-bilation, a poem of thanksgiving to the glory of the Father. The Roman Missal contains a variety of Prefaces. Each one begins by acknowledging that the Father is always and everywhere worthy of thanksgiving. The middle part, drawing upon the wonders of creation and redemption, presents a specific reason for giving thanks. The final part soars heavenward, asking that our voices may be joined to those of the angelic choirs. The Preface, by its very nature, cries out to be sung. The world’s greatest musicians have recognized in the traditional melody of the Preface, a composition of unequal simplicity and majesty. (These weekly inserts concern the changes in the Mass.)

Conscience Rights Violated by Sweeping HHS Contraceptive Mandate

Take Action at www.pacatholic.org by September 30

In implementing the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the new health care reform law), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently issued a rule requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as “preventive services” for women. The mandate even forces individuals and groups with religious or moral objections to purchase and provide such coverage if they are to receive or provide health coverage at all. This poses an unprecedented threat to individual and institu-tional religious freedom. The rule includes a religious exemption so extremely narrow that it protects almost no one. It covers only a “religious employer” that has the “inculcation of religious values” as its purpose, primarily employs and serves persons who share its religious tenets, and is a church organization under two narrow provisions of the tax code. A great many religious organizations-including Catholic colleges and universities, as well as hospitals and charitable institutions that serve the public-will be ineligible. Individuals and religiously affiliated health insurers will not qualify for the exemption. The new rule would force insurance plans to cover “all Food and Drug Administration approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive ca-pacity.” Never before has the federal government required private health plans to include such coverage. The FDA-approved “emergency contraception” (EC) drugs that are covered by this mandate can work by inter-fering with implantation of a newly conceived human being. Also, the drug the FDA most recently approved for EC, “Ella,” a close analogue to the abortion drug RU-486, has been shown in animal tests to cause abor-tion. Thus, the mandate includes drugs that may cause an abortion both before and after implantation. ACTION: Please send an e-mail message to HHS by visiting www.pacatholic.org. With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can send a message to HHS asking them to respect religious liberty and to your elected rep-resentatives in Congress, urging them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179/S. 1467) to ensure that such federal mandates do not violate Americans’ moral and religious convictions. MESSAGE TO HHS: “Pregnancy is not a disease, and drugs and surgeries to prevent it are not basic health care that the government should require all Americans to purchase. Please remove sterilization and prescrip-tion contraceptives from the list of ‘preventive services’ the federal government is mandating in private health plans. It is especially important to exclude any drug that may cause an early abortion, and to fully re-spect religious freedom as other federal laws do. The narrow religious exemption in HHS’s new rule protects almost no one. I urge you to allow all organizations and individuals to offer, sponsor and obtain health cov-erage that does not violate their moral and religious convictions.” WHEN: Please send your comments to HHS by the September 30 deadline. You can send your message at www.pacatholic.org.
