Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held

the 1st and 2nd Wednesday of each month beginning

promptly at 7:00 p.m.

The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of

Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views

expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of

Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and

auxiliary on issues of concern. The publication is posted on the

Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers, Families, and Friends of Council 367,

In the Naval Aviation business that I used to be

involved in back in the day, we had a saying: You're only as

good as your last landing. If that landing was on a moonless

night to a pitching and rolling deck, then you were worth a

little bit more. Regardless of whether it was a fixed wing ok

three wire trap on an aircraft carrier or a perfect three-point

touchdown on a single spot small deck, you took your grade,

called it a day, and moved on. You survived. That was

yesterday. So too it is with the fraternal year. We stuck the

landing, we got our grade, we survived, and now it's time to

move on. The books are closed. Onward and upward to even

bigger and better goals for the new fraternal year.

The end of one year and the beginning of another is

a good time to refocus and clarify the fundamentals of an

organization. Only if one knows the core values, vision, and

mission of the organization can a person begin to be a

productive member of the team. More importantly, though,

the person must come to embrace with his very sinew the

tenants that define the organization before he can become a

star player. Only then, does he charge forth to fully develop

himself to be the best he can be. By extension he then makes

the organization that much greater. We must think similarly

and as stridently about our membership in the Knights of

Columbus. Only when each of us makes the personal

commitment to excel can we make the Council even greater

going forward. That's a goal for this fraternal year.

Organizational greatness begins with the

membership being unified in the accomplishment of the

mission. Fortunately, the Knights of Columbus has a well-

defined mission for us to rally behind: our first principle of

charity.

However, in order to be able to be successful in the

attainment of the mission, we must first be united as a fraternal

brotherhood. Membership in the Knights of Columbus

presents Catholic gentlemen with the opportunity to be part of

this fraternal brotherhood. By doing so, only then can he begin

to attain the spiritual growth necessary to become a Great

Catholic Gentleman. However, it is not sufficient to merely be

a dues-paying member to gain the full benefit of the Order.

Only by fully embracing the concept of unity can one become

fully enlightened, totally engaged, and maximally

productive. That's a goal for this fraternal year.

Unity of membership is directly proportional to the

accomplishment of the mission. The more members that we

have in the Council, the more critical mass we have. The bigger

the mass, the more projects we can man, the more fundraising

that we can do, the more able we are to accomplish our first

principle. One of our first responsibilities to the Order is to

grow the membership. An invitation to membership is a call to

him to actively grow in his faith. As Catholics we are

compelled by God to perform works of charity. As Saint

Matthew famously writes "Truly I tell you, whatever you did

for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you

did for me." (Matthew 25:40-45). Through unity we can get

more men to join the Order. Doing so will strengthen our

families, our parishes, and our communities. Fundamentally

transforming the lives of the men who have been invited to join

and who have chosen to embrace the principles of the Order is

our responsibility. We must increase our efforts to recruit more

members. That's a goal for this fraternal year.

Family of the Month

As a member of the St. Pius X Men’s Club, he is the

leader of the Men’s Club sponsored faith formation classes,

instrumental in the execution of the Men’s Club AYCE

Breakfasts & Breakfast with Santa, parish picnics, the

Monthly Parking Lot "Treasure Trunk Sale", and serves an

extraordinary minister. He assisted with the installation of the

handicapped parking signs and the set-up and tear-down of

the St. Pius X Annual Carnival since its inception in 2015.

His wife has been a steady and trusted supporter of

the religious education by teaching 2nd grade class for several

years and has assisted food in the preparation for many of the

parish’s dinners and their son has been an alter server for

many years.

As a family, they dedicated many hours during

SPX’s week of the NEST program by prepping meals and

assisting the homeless insuring that they felt welcomed. This

family truly exhibits the meaning of a family living their faith.

On behalf of the Fr. Nixon and the Knights of

Columbus, Council 367, our June Family of the Month are

Bruce, Elizabeth, and Gregory Wainer. Thank you for

your dedication to our parish community.

SHRIMP DRIVE-THRU DINNER – Our Shrimp

Drive-thru Dinner will be on Friday, July 24th, from 5:00 to

6:30 pm. Dinners MUST be ordered before Monday, July

20th. Dinners include 10 Jumbo Shrimp, baked potato, cole

slaw, desserts, cocktail sauce, sour cream, butter, towelettes,

napkin, fork & knife. Cost is $10. Contact Dave Listol at

[email protected] or 757-651-8239. Minimum dinners

for event to be held is 60 dinners. Maximum will be 130

dinners. Reservations go fast. Get your order in soon!

IN/OUT CEREMONY – Our In/Out ceremony will

be on Sunday, July 19th, 1 PM, at Sacred Heart Parish. White

dinner jacket is the prescribed attire. Due to COVID-19

restrictions, only officers and wives/significant other will be

permitted to attend ceremony.

IN/OUT SOCIAL – Our In/Out social will be on

Sunday, July 19th, 3 PM, at the Council. Come eat a hearty

meal and congratulate all the awardees for their hard work and

dedication to our Council/Church/Community. Cost of the

meal is FREE, but reservations MUST be made to attend.

can group people as requested. The meal will consist of a

picnic summer fare of fried chicken, potato salad, cole-slaw,

As the baseball player Jackie Robinson said: "A life

is not important except in the impact it has on other

lives." Through unity of membership we can impact the lives

of the least of our brothers and sisters and thus make our own

lives more important. Charity is the answer. As the first

principle, we must focus our energies on doing all that we can

to maximize our efforts to perform acts of charity for others,

fundraise to assist those in need, join in with other

organizations assisting the needy, do more of our part to

support the State's two selected charities (KOVAR and

VKCCI), and to become personally involved in programs to

support them. While raising funds can be fulfilling and an

actionable target, one has to be personally invested in making

it happen to realize the spiritual benefits. It is not sufficient

for a Knight to be casually committed to the concept of

devoting oneself to the principle of charity. We must be all in.

We must raise more money, do more work, and help more

charities. That's a goal for this fraternal year.

Brothers, we are about to embark on an even better

fraternal year. We will leverage on our personnel expertise,

vast experience, and sheer determination to do bigger things

this year. To do that we must be united in our mission. Let's

do it. Thanks.

Precepts of the Church

In the Catholic Church, the Precepts of the Church,

sometimes called Commandments of the Church, are

certain laws considered binding on the faithful. As usually

understood, they are moral and ecclesiastical, broad in

character and limited in number. There are 5 Percepts:

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy day of

obligations and to refrain from work and activities

which could impede the sanctification of those days.

2. You shall confess your sins, receiving the sacrament

of Reconciliation at least once a year.

3. You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy

Communion at least during the Easter season.

4. You shall abstain from eating meat and to observe

the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence

established by the Church.

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the

Church, each according to his own ability.

Columbus Club Report

Brothers, Families, and Friends,

Thank you for your confidence in electing me

President of the Columbus Club for another year. We have

another great Board of Directors for the Columbus Club this

year. We will do our best to navigate these strange and

challenging times ahead.

We are hopeful that the Governor will actually

implement Phase III on 1 July as he proposed. If he goes

through with lifting more of his restrictions; we will be able to

pretty much re-open for affairs. We are making preparations

based the guidance promulgated for Phase III rental activities.

We have had some tentative rentals cancelled due to the current

Phase II restrictions. We are hoping rentals will improve soon.

We have posted required notices that no one with a

temperature over 100.4 F/38 C degrees, or anyone with

COVID 19 Symptoms, or anyone who has been knowingly

exposed to COVID 19 in the last 14 days is permitted in the

building or picnic area. Social distancing is also required for

the foreseeable future and face masks are recommended in the

building. Phase III will allow 50% for rated room capacity in

the building.

John and I continue to make periodic visits to check

on the building. Things continue to be normal. The power

company has replaced the pole with lights that was blown

down in the storm last month with a modern light fixture. Jim,

John, and Todd are continuing to do jobs needed around the

building, which is very helpful and most appreciated.

Unfortunately, it looks like there will be no ball

games this fall. That puts a significant hole in our income. We

are continuing to keep as few things connected as possible and

have also stopped the Cox cable service for now to save costs

except for the phone. We will be discussing this year’s actual

cost vs. Budget and our proposed Budget for next year at our

Regular Columbus Club Meeting on July 29th (starting at 7:30

PM). Please try to attend.

Knight of the Month

The Knight of the Month is a Brother who has helped

make the past two drive thru shrimp dinners a huge success.

Because of him stepping up to run the operations in the

kitchen, the Council was able to put together two of the biggest

food events in our history. He personally assisted with the

preparations on the evening before each event by lending a

hand to get the potatoes ready, apportion condiments, and

thaw the shrimp packages. His help ensured that all necessary

preparations were completed in a timely manner so that things

were in order per the operational plan for the following night.

His assistance during this time was critical to the

overall success of both shrimp dinners. Additionally, he

supervised the preparations for the cooking of the shrimp on

the Friday night for both drive through socials. His keen ability

to organize the kitchen, process the thawing and cooking of

shrimp, and then seasoning it perfectly for the customers was

critical. He single-handedly cooked over two thousand shrimp

for both nights. His skilled cooking techniques ensured that

over 220 sumptuous meals were served piping hot to our loyal

customers. His efforts combined with his other numerous

teammates resulted in the Council netting over $1200 during

the two shrimp fry events. He was an integral player in the

success of both drive thru shrimp dinners.

He has been instrumental in saving the Columbus

Club over $300 by mowing the picnic area for the last three

months on a weekly basis. When a big pine tree branch fell

during a storm, he cut it up and cleared the area of the mess.

The Knight of the Month for June is Deputy Grand

Knight Todd Womack. His enthusiasm and can-do spirit set

the example for other Knights to emulate. Congratulations.

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the

political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the

powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of

Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that

they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths

to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator

with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of

Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men,

deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form

of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or

to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles

and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their

Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established

should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience

hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than

to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a

long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a

design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw

off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has

been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which

constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present

King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in

direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this,

let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most

wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass

Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his

Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to

them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of

people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the

Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called

together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the

depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into

compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for

opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused

for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the

Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for

their exercise; the State remaining in the mean-time exposed to all the dangers of

invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavored to prevent the

population of these States; for that purpose, obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of

Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising

Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and

payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices and sent hither

swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance. He has kept among

us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has

affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. He has

combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and

unacknowledged by our laws; giving his 2 Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: For protecting them, by a mock

Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants

of these States: For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes

on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by

Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences: For abolishing

the free System of English Laws in a neighboring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary

government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for

introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: For taking away our Charters, abolishing our

most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our

own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases

whatsoever. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War

against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of

our people. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the works

of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely

paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. He has

constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to

become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. He has

excited domestic insurrections amongst us and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our

frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction

of all ages, sexes and conditions. In every stage of these Oppressions. We have Petitioned for Redress

in the most-humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A

Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler

of a free people. Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned

them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over

us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have

appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our

common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and

correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must,

therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the

rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united

States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for

the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies,

solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and

Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all

political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved;

and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract

Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of

right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine

Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

THE PRICE THEY PAID

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the

Declaration of Independence? What fates befell them for daring to put their

names to that document?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they

died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons

captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the

Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred

honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were

farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they

signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty

would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept

from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his

debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move

his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his

family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty

was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton,

Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British

General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his

headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open

fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy

jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying.

Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were

laid to waste. For more than a year, he lived in forests and caves,

returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A

few weeks later, he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution.

These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-

spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they

valued liberty more.

Standing talk straight, and unwavering, they pledged: “For the

support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of

the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives,

our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history

books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary

War. We didn’t fight just the British. We were British subjects at

that time and we fought our own government!

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn’t.

CHARLES A. RICE III

LT. COL. CHARLIE RICE DIED JUNE 2, 2020 AT THE AGE OF 89, FOLLOWING A LONG LIFE OF SERVICE TO

HIS COUNTRY, HIS COMMUNITY, AND HIS FAMILY. THE PAIN OF HIS LOSS IS DEEPLY FELT BY HIS

FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

CHARLIE SERVED HIS COUNTRY WITH A MILITARY CAREER THAT SPANNED 30 YEARS, TAKING HIM

FROM ROTC IN HIGH SCHOOL, TO THE COAST GUARD ACADEMY, AND ULTIMATELY TO THE AIR

FORCE. HE SERVED IN THE KOREAN WAR FROM 1954-1955 AND IN THE VIETNAM WAR FROM 1965 TO

1969. HIS AIR FORCE CAREER INCLUDED STATIONS IN JAPAN, TEXAS, VIETNAM, ALABAMA, ITALY,

AND NEBRASKA. HE RETIRE DIN JUNE 1976 AND MOVED ONLAST TIME BACK TO NORFOLK, VA.

WHILE IN THE AIR FORCE, CHARLIE, AND HIS FIRST WIFE, JANET LEOMBRUNO RICE, WERE BLESSED

WITH A FAMILY OF FIVE CHILDREN. OF THE MANY PLACES IN WHICH THEY LIVED GROWING UP,

THEIR HOME OUTSIDE ROME, ITALY SEEMS THE UNIVERSAL FAVORITE.

THROUGHOUT HIS LONG LIFE, CHARLIE MAINTAINED A POWERFUL CURIOSITY AND LOVE FOR

LEARNING. HIS INTERESTS WERE NUMEROUS AND VARIED, INCLUDING FLYING, BOATING,

ELECTRONICS, CLOCKMAKING, HISTORY, AND GOLF, AMONG OTHERS. AFTER HE RETIRED FROM

THE MILITARY, HE REMAINED DEDICATED TO SERVING OTHERS, VOLUNTEERING EXTENSIVELY

WITH THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, NORFOLK COUNCIL 367, WHERE HE SERVED AS GRAND KNIGHT.

HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS PARENTS CHARLES A. RICE, JR. & LUCY SMITH RICE, HIS INFANT

BROTHER RICHARD E. RICE, & HIS ELDESET SON, MICHAEL R. RICE. HE IS SURVIVED BY FOUR

CHILDREN, SON MARK (LAREN) RICE, DAUGHER CHERI (DAVID) JENNINGS, SON DENNIS (CHRISTINE)

RICE, AND DAUGHTER CHRISTINE (BRENT) GARLAND, THREE GRANDCHLDREN, CARIE, (JAN) EVANS,

COLEMAN JENNINGS, AND ALICE GARLAND, & ONE GREAT-GRANDAUGHTER, ARYA HALL.

A FUNERAL MASS & CELEBRATION OF CHARLIE’S LIFE WILL BE HELD IN NORFOLK, VA AFTER COVID

RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTED. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIAL DONATOINS TO THE RICK SHARP
