forces to take on Adams and Clay Calhoun became increasingly involved in

the debate over the tariff of 1816 He even made it a campaign issue. By 1824 Jackson, Calhoun, and even Van

CalhounCalhoun By 1826 it was decided that Calhoun would

join forces with Jackson and champion for states rights

However, the tariff of 1816 remained a great debate especially in 1827 when Congress jacked up tariff rate to almost 70 percent

This became known as the Tariff of Abominations

In response to this Calhoun created the South Carolina Exposition

One of the main points was that it was an unfair tax on the south and invited retaliation by European countries

Calhoun then argued that the Federal Gov was a compact and the states had the right to nullify Federal laws and even secede if it became necessary.

Jackson’s inauguration was unlike anything else before it.

Jackson made a promise in his speech to protect state’s rights.

Jackson made statements that he wanted to change Washington and add more direct voting to the process (Federal Judges, state Senators)

Spoils System: Jackson used this policy to remove 919 federal appointees and replace them with supporters.

Jackson promoted democracy by decreasing voter restrictions.

Jackson and SectionalismJackson and

Sectionalism As the economy in South continued to fall apart

tensions between Jackson and Calhoun continued to increase.

One problem was who would be Jackson’s successor. Webster-Hayne Debate:

Issue was raised over the sale of federal land. South wanted to expand the sale into the west where the

North wanted it to be halted It soon erupted into what is known as the Webster-Hayne

debate Nullification and the Tariff of 1832

Calhoun believed that Jackson would veto the tariff’s continuation in 1832 (didn’t happen)

Calhoun then decided to resign as vice Pres and run for Senate in South Carolina

Soon S.C took steps to act on the new tariff Ordinance of Nullification:

NULLIFICED THE TARIFF OF 1828 AND 1832 AND IF THE FED GOV THRIED TO FORCE THEM INTO COMPLIANCE THEY WOULD SECEED.

Jackson’s response was known as the Force Bill Clay was forced to step in and create a resolution

to solve this problem.

B.U.SB.U.S B.U.S was established in the 1816 by Madison Admin and was

centered in Philadelphia The B.U.S controlled the small state banks by controlling the

flow of money through credit available to the small banks South and West felt B.U.S was discriminatory in its lending

policies. Jackson made a campaign promise to take it down The Bank war of 1832-33 began with Jackson’s opponent in the

1832 election (Clay) Clay convinced Nicholas Biddle to re-charted the bank early Most felt Jackson would be persuaded by his party to re-

charter the bank. Jackson vetoed the bill. Jackson began testing his powers from this point on. Many began to question exactly how far Jackson was willing to

exert his power. Even with the negative criticism brought on by the B.U.S

Jackson won reelection in 1832. Jackson then took further steps to kill the B.U.S by removing

Federal funds from the B.U.S and putting it into state banks In the long run this brought great economic instability to

the U.S

Business v. Government

Business v. Government

After the war of 1812 both federal and state gov began taking an active role in the promotion of Industry in America

States began to issue charters to Businesses to help them grow

About the only think the Democrats and republicans agreed upon during this time period was Federal involvement in Business

Jackson and the Native Americans Jackson and the

Native Americans American Expansion became the center of

focus in the early to mid 19 century. Jackson very early on took up the cause to

remove the Native Americans from the Miss River and the App Mountains

He believed that the NA threatened the stability of the U.S Gov

He also disagreed with the territorial ownership of the land.

Jackson offered two solutions (Assimilation or Move)

One of the first battles came in Georgia where a battle was taking place between the Cherokee and the State of Georgia.

To aide Georgia’s cause Jackson created the Indian Removal Act in 1830.

In a famous court case Worcester v. Georgia Jackson overrode the Supreme Court Decision and forced the Cherokee off their land.

Another center of heated debate was the Black Hawk War.

In this case the U.S wanted the NA west of miss river.

The NA wanted the U.S people off the continent.

The issue came to an end in Illinois with their defeat.

Jackson’s Legacy Jackson’s Legacy Jackson made great strides to move power back to

the states (internal improvements, B.U.S) Jackson made his impact on the Presidency (no

B.S nationalism through expansion) It was during Jackson’s presidency that the

Democrats emerged as the Modern Political Party New styles of campaigns emerged as communication

became easier. Jackson’s dominance over the National Republican

Party led to birth of the Whig Party The Whigs took the Nationalism approach while

the Democrats took the States Rights approach. In the 1836 election the Democrats still held

strong. (Whigs forced to nominate 3 candidates) The Democrats were popular/Van Buren not so much Van Buren was left to deal with the Panic of

1837.

Panic of 1837Panic of 1837

Caused by speculation of Western Land, too much credit, too much paper money and not enough gold.

Everyone felt the pinch Van Buren put the burden on the

states for economic relief. Van Buren removed federal funds

from state banks and put it in federal vaults and postponed distribution of Federal surplus.

This brought an end of Van Buren’s political career.
