MASS INTENTIONS

MT 25: 31-46

Many of our parishioners have asked to have some

kind of Bible study or other means of breaking open the Word of God, so joining a small church group would more than amply satisfy this desire. Our ongoing adult formation through the small church groups affords the opportunity to “Open the Word” on a regular basis using the Lectionary Base (the Sunday readings). The small church group offers a safe meeting experience to deepen one’s faith and to create an intimate atmosphere for fellowship and sense of belonging to the CTK community. Be sure to consult the bulletin for meeting times and contact information.

Please be sure to make your pledges good for 2014.

We are still about $12,000.00 shy of our goal, and if we don’t reach our goal we will have to make up the difference from our regular collection. Needless to say, we are still behind in our payments to the diocese and adding the CSA shortfall to our present debt would be a tremendous financial burden. Thank you for your continued support of the CSA, and let’s try to make our pledges good.

Please be mindful of others when dropping off or

picking up members of your families at the handicapped cut out at the end of the courtyard. Some people are parking and waiting for members of their families to exit the church while others are trying to disembark. Unfortunately we do not have other options when dropping off or picking up passengers in this area, so please be considerate of others while dropping off or picking up your passengers. Questions for Sunday November 23, 2014: “when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power” What is St. Paul referring to in this pericope? 1 Cor 15:20-28 Considering the nature of sheep and goats, why does Jesus use the example of sheep and goats in His view of the final judgment? MT 25:31-46

LITURGY CORNER Part Two: Sharing Our Parish Story through Life and Faith

Christ the King - Our Sculpture Next weekend (November 22/23) we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. This is a great day for us as Christians, as Catholics

and especially for us as a parish community. We as parishioners claim Christ not only as Lord, Savior, Shepherd and King but take on His name for our parish faith community begun some thirty-six years ago in November of 1978.

The gospel reading for the feast is from Matthew’s account of the final judgement: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25: 31-46)

As we all share in the on-going story of Christ we share in the on-going story of our parish family. From its inception until now, we as members of our parish have a responsibility to follow the example of the humble Christ in service to the poor, the needy, the hungry, the imprisoned and all who live on the fringes of society.

For those who might not be aware, this scripture reading was used by the artist, Joseph O’Connell as a basis to create the beautiful sculpture of “Christ the King” in our courtyard leading into the church. In 1991 Fr. Bill Kenny, Mary Jane Leslie and the other members of the committee commissioned this “signature” work of art to represent Christ the King with a few “givens”:

• The art had to be based on Matthew 25. • The “Christ” figure could not be on a throne, wearing a crown or in any way look regal. • It had to be “big” or “imposing” and placed in direct line with the fountains (the courtyard fountain that has since been removed) and the baptismal font inside the church, so that people would have to confront it on their way out. The idea was not to be able to “escape” it.

In the project brochure made for the parish it speaks of the sculpture in the following words: “From three large blocks of Indiana limestone our memorial will emerge. These blocks weigh approximately 23,000 pounds and will encompass an area of 14’ x 16’. The panels are six and eight feet high, eight feet deep, and spaced about twelve feet apart at its entrance. This sculpture will sit on the extended courtyard in front of the new Administration Building. As one drives into the parking lot, part of the sculpture will be viewed, enticing one to come around and enter into it and discover the interior. The outside of the stones will be rough cut. From stone # 1 a deeply cut figure of Christ the King will emerge. On the surfaces of stones, # 2, 3, 4 will be deeply cut figures symbolizing the gospel from Matthew which speaks to us of our responsibility to the homeless, poor, hungry, and imprisoned. Upon leaving the church building, having heard the gospel message, one will be confronted by and drawn into the sculpture and be reminded once again of what it means to be a Christian.”

The sculpture was proudly dedicated on Saturday – September 23, 1995 and was the final work of art created by Joseph O’Connell who passed away very shortly after the dedication. Mr. O’Connell knew that this would be his final creation and poured his heart and soul into the sculpture.

We can all share in this beautiful work of art but more importantly we are invited to study it, to pray beside it and to be imbued with the “spirit of service” it portrays. Parents, teach your children about the statue. Help them understand the message of Matthew 25 and model to them the proper “respect” for this work of art. In this way you can pass on to the future generations at Christ the King what it means to be a member of our parish family.

In Joseph O’Connell’s own words he says: “A triptych” depicting the human family in need of a helping hand…it depicts the human condition and things required of us, out of love and humanity.”

So this week, out of “love and humanity,” ask yourself how YOU can be Christ’s hands and feet in the world within our parish community and beyond. Remember: “Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do to me.”

Stay tuned for Part Three in this series next week. “Be Blessed!”
