This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God’s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: “And his commandment is this: we should believe . . . and love one another” (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ’s life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul’s fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord’s Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. A WORD FROM FR. RAY

UNA PALABRA DEL PADRE RAY

I just got back from our annual Confirmation Retreat. Again, many thanks go to the team for another wonderful retreat. Our children had a chance to bond with one another, and they had some deep Spiritual experiences through the process of the weekend. The weather was perfect at Big Bear, California, and it was especially nice being in the mountains in the fresh cool air. We also got to observe a Bald Eagle with chicks in a nest….awesome. The energy at the retreat never ceased to peak, and we celebrated a wonderful Sunday Liturgy. The children were given the opportunity to reflect on the reality that there are others much like themselves that have similar journeys and often times painful ones. Masks were torn away during the talks opening avenues of vulnerability to the pain and suffering of fitting into various social norms and family dynamics that are often times dysfunctional. The dialogues that take place are sincere and allow each student an opportunity to be absorbed in the reflection of their peers and journey more intimately into the pain of others, as Christ often absorbed the pain and suffering of those he ministered to. It’s always a treasure to witness our children having a deeper sense of the Holy Spirit in these exercises for a deeper understanding of compassion and ministering to one another.

I’d also like to thank our Confirmation Director Joyce and her team and Beth our Formation Director for all their preparation and love that went into the retreat. We’ll be looking forward to witnessing their big day when the Bishop comes to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on the 6th of May at the 3:30 pm Mass. Fr. Ray

Padre Ray

LITURGY CORNER ESQUINA LITURGICA “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever

remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 New American Bible) As we continue to walk together as brother and sisters, the image of the vine and the branches is a powerful one in today’s Gospel.

Having been born in New York City and raised in Upstate New York, I’ve learned to appreciate living in the city and also growing up in the North Country. In the summers, we would go to the city and take in the sites and surround ourselves with the hustle and bustle of city living. We would fill the car and stock up on supplies we could not get in the country. If you’ve been to New York City, it’s hard to describe the smell and the feel of a subway tunnel or platform in the middle of rush hour in the height of summer. Let’s just say it’s not something you’ll ever forget. With the crowded streets and the wonder of Broadway, your senses are literally inundated with activity, stimulation, and noise. After our visit we would leave it all behind and go back to the quiet familiarity of being part of a small community and surrounded by nature. At the end of summer, we would eat fresh vegetables from the ground, drink clean crisp water and breathe fresh unpolluted air. It was good to be home.

Every week we would do something similar. We leave the church and our work begins again. We drive our kids to school and running to endless activities. We go back to the work place, fill ourselves with fast food and hardly spend time with our families. By the end of the week, we are tired, grumpy and ready to kick off our shoes. As we collapse on to the couch, we pray that Monday will not come too soon but it always does.

Here at Christ the King, it is our hope that our beautiful church and community becomes for all of us the vine that connects us to the Father. A place where we bring our tired bodies and stressed filled minds to the Altar and become renewed by the word of God and fed by body and blood of Christ. We must reconnect to the vine that is Jesus Christ, who gives us his Spirit and connects us to God the Father. It is also our hope that we as the body of Christ, help one another to be renewed. After not seeing each other for a week let us remember to take the time to say hello to the people around us and not be afraid to share in each other stories. A good reflection is Ephesians chapter 4 from which I quote, “Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body’s growth and builds itself up in love.” (Ephesians 4: 15-16 NAB) Have a blessed week and we look forward to seeing you next Saturday or Sunday. Please keep our First Communion Kids in your prayers and pray that they continue to join us at the table of the Lord with their families.

Ellen

Ellen

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In medieval times, one country, Scotland, linked its economy to the liturgy. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
