March 20, 2016 ~ Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Come to the Triduum, March 24,25, 26
The Three Days, this Easter Triduum, is the center, the core of the year for Christians. These are days to save and savor. Adults in the community are invited to plan ahead so that the whole time from Thursday night until the Easter Vigil is free of social engagements, free even of work, free of entertainment, free of meals except for the simplest nourishment. We are asked to fast during Good Friday and to continue fasting, if possible, all through Holy Saturday as strictly as we can, so that we come hungry and full of excitement to the Easter Vigil. We make Good Friday and Holy Saturday free for prayer and reflection and preparation and silence. The church is getting ready.
Whether you are young or old, currently active in the parish or not, please set these days aside. All of us should know that our presence for the liturgies is not by invitation. We are all needed here. All of us need this whole community together on its greatest days.
On these three days, we gather a number of times with each other. Together we hear some of the church's most beautiful prayers and scriptures and we make some of our finest music. We make plans to take part in the various liturgies and other gatherings of Holy Thursday night, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Above all, come on Saturday night for the Vigil.
Special Reminder: Each evening of the Triduum the church doors will be open at 6:40 p.m. You are invited to gather for simple soup on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, served from 5:30 until 6:30 pm in the Community Center. You might prefer not to wear socks or hose on Holy Thursday to ease your participation in the foot washing, to which the whole community is invited.
We ask that when entering the church and during our services these sacred days, a spirit of prayer and reverence be observed.

A Word from Fr. Ray
HAPPY TRIDUUM TO ALL. May this Holy Week be filled with inspiration and joy of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here’s hoping that this Holy Week will allow you to fully appreciate the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus through his passion and resurrection. Join us beginning with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday as we come to a fuller understanding of what it means to be a servant to all. Be sure to attend one of our Good Friday services as well. With much love and gratitude, Fr. Ray
LITURGY CORNER As we continue our journey of faith with Christ, we reflect: March 19-20, 2016 – Palm Sunday This day marks the beginning of a week like none other in the church year. We begin on a triumphant note with Christ and end in what would seem like tragedy and despair. However, nothing could be further from the truth. After Good Friday, there is ALWAYS an EASTER. This week look back on your own life and see how this has been true for you. Make it a truly personal week between you and Christ. If the Lenten days have slipped by with little reflection or change on your part, it is not too late.
PASSION The word "passion" connotes deep, focused engagement. It
also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence.
The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year's history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow. NEVADANS FOR THE COMMON GOOD Convention at Cashman Center
Monday evening, May 9th
We’re hoping to have a large Christ the King contingent of parishioners attend the upcoming Nevadans for the Common Good Convention in May. This is one way to come together to show our parish’s support in areas of social justice here in our local community. There are a lot of ills to mend in this valley: certainly, the difficulties of schools and teachers educating our children; the issues surrounding immigration laws; our vulnerable elderly. Nevadans for the Common Good hopes to amass a large group representing 40 congregations and non-profits to come out for this convention to show our Legislative representatives and school board members we want a “seat at the table” making decisions in this valley. We can only do this by showing our strength. Please plan to attend.
FAMILY PROMISE Coming in May!

Good Friday Service at Noon March 25, 2016
This year our Noon service on Good Friday will be a contemporary presentation in three parts reflecting on our faith journey with Christ and all that it entails. We will take a look at our walk of faith from Advent as we walked the road of HOPE into Ordinary Time where we have walked the road of DISCOVERY of self. Then we will move into the Lenten season where the road has led us to experience God’s MERCY AND CHANGE OF HEART. The second part will lead us to look at our lives more closely through an examination of conscience which will then flow into the third part, an opportunity for the congregation to become more truly and physically involved in the experience of the Cross and Christ’s death. The service then will conclude with an optional veneration of the cross as we depart from the church. We invite you to come and experience the Lord in a very special way as we recall the Passion and Death of Christ.
The Lord is my help, therefore I am not
disgraced. Isaiah 50:7a
Treasures from Our Tradition What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today and they will reply “Palm Sunday.” Not too long ago, today was known as the “Second Sunday of the Passion,” and in 1970 it was renamed “Passion Sunday.” This made some sense, since the procession recalling Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both aspects of the celebration: “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.” In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and in Italy olive branches are the norm. When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week to come was revised even as the traditional name, “Holy Week,” was retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart of the Christian life. Today, as you ponder the Lord’s Passion, you may consider your response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, at least once in your lifetime, promise to participate faithfully in the liturgies. Now begins the Church’s annual baptismal retreat: don’t be left out! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD PALMS AND GLORY Here we stand, once again, holding high our palm branches to be blessed. With the crowd in the Gospel story, we proclaim, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord." Unlike those people in the Gospel who greeted Jesus, we know where this is going. We know that we are included in the crowds who greeted Jesus with joy, and in the same crowds who one week later would shout, "Crucify him!" We live into the story of Christ's glory and his suffering. SUFFERING AND REDEMPTION The reading of the Passion is long and hard to hear. Beginning with the Last Supper, the Passover meal in which Jesus gives himself to us in
the bread and wine, through the agonizing prayer in the garden, to the trial, condemnation, and finally the crucifixion, we stand, patiently listening and wondering how we fit into this story. Although told in the past tense, we hear this story in the present tense, knowing that this is our story, one in which we suffer with our crucified Lord. We know also that this will lead to the Resurrection, but for now, we experience the grief and sadness that will be repeated in the rituals later this week: the Mass of Holy Thursday, the service of Good Friday with the veneration of the cross, and the quiet and thoughtful time of Holy Saturday leading to the glorious Easter Vigil. We view Jesus' suffering through the eyes of the women of Galilee as well as the guards and other disciples who watch from a distance. We have a glimpse of our redemption in the conversation of Jesus with "the good thief." Our hearts are broken. We finally recognize the effects of our sinfulness and the great gift that Jesus has given us in the Eucharist and in his death. That recognition can lead us truly to redemption as we contemplate its implication in our lives. We look forward to the Resurrection with eager anticipation of our salvation.

Family Prayer Suggestions for March "Because the joy of all parents is to teach their
children the art of living, as parents we want to be the primary educators of our children."
The Christian family constitutes a specific revelation and realization of ecclesial communion, and for this reason it can and should be called "the domestic church."
All members of a family, according to his or her gifts, have the grace and responsibility of building, day by day, the communion of persons, making the family "a school of deeper humanity": this happens where there is care and love for the little ones, the sick, the aged; where there is mutual service every day; when there is a sharing of goods, of joys and of sorrows. A fundamental opportunity for building such a communion is constituted by the educational exchange between parents and children in which each gives and receives. St. John Paul II
Discussion Questions (after prayer together): 1. What are some similarities between how we learn to
live in the family and how we learn to live in the Church?
2. What are some differences between what we learn to live shallowly and what we learn to live in a more deeply human way?
3. Realizing that God has not only given me my life, but also particular parent-child relationships, how do we each give and receive from each other?
4. What are some of the "graces and responsibilities" I think I have to contribute to making our family more Christian and more human?
PASCHAL CANDLE DONATIONS Once again we are accepting donations in memory of your loved ones as we prepare to purchase our Paschal Candle to be blessed at the Easter Vigil. The Paschal Candle, placed by the Baptismal Font, is a very important symbol used during our Baptism and Funeral liturgies throughout the year. The candle represents Christ, our Light. Each time you look at the candle you can also be reminded of your loved one, in a very special way. If you would like to donate, envelopes for your offering and the name of your loved one can be found at the Welcome Center desk and at the parish office during regular business hours. All donations must be in by Monday, March 21st. The names of your loved ones will then be listed in the bulletin during the Easter season.

Small Church Communi es; a way of being
Church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!
