Can you imagine a world such as

Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today?

LITURGY CORNER April 24, 2016 ~ 5th Sunday of Easter

As we continue our journey of faith with Christ, we reflect: Today Jesus gives the command to “love one another.” We are to love one another, as God has loved us. Christ’s love led him to the cross. So too, our love is to be self-emptying and sacrificial. How do you show your love for others? When you serve, is it pure love that motivates you? When people see you, do they see God’s love working through you and in you?

We’re hoping to have a large group from Christ the King show its support in areas of social justice affecting our local community. The issues being dealt with by the NCG team are: education, immigration, vulnerable elderly, human trafficking, and neighborhood blight. Many local and state representatives will be attending the convention and need to see the outcry of support from the NCG members. If there are enough people attending, Christ the King will get a bus for transportation to Cashman Center.

Blood Drive ~ May 1

We are having a blood drive in the Community Center on Sunday, May 1, from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. Please mark your calendars!

HOW IS BLOOD USED? Blood is Used to Save Lives!

Blood transfusions save more than 4 million lives each year. It is estimated that blood is needed every two seconds, and that 1 out of 7 people entering the hospital will need blood. Since blood cannot be manufactured or harvested, it can only come from Heroes like YOU – the volunteer blood donor! Depending on patients’ needs, your blood donation may be separated into several different components that may be used to treat a variety of medical conditions or illnesses. In fact, the majority of blood is not used by accident victims, but for everyday needs such as cancer treatments, orthopedic surgeries, organ and marrow transplants, cardiovascular surgery and blood disorders such as anemia or sickle cell disease. Blood is separated into components so that several patients may benefit from one blood donation.

"Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race."

Las Vegas Chapter of Lay Dominicans

Did you know that the Dominicans also have a Third Order, known as Tertiaries? These followers of St. Dominic strive to grow in spirituality by showing their love and service to their parish family and the community at large. Through prayer and study they are able to grow in the ways of St Dominic., St. Thomas, and St. Catherine of Siena. The Las Vegas Chapter of Lay Dominicans usually meets the last Saturday of each month at 9:00 am at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center on the campus of UNLV. The Spiritual Director for this Chapter is Fr. Daniel Roland, O.P. For more information or to join the Lay Order of Preachers, please visit our website at http://bartololongo.org.

Treasures from Our Tradition The French Revolution swept the church in France away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Fifth Sunday of Easter Paul's back! After last week's "violent abuse," opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the "energizing evangelist," transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul's past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation's future "new heaven, new earth" should inspire our optimism. But Revelation's present assurance, "Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race," should challenge us to become "missionaries of mercy." Because,

when announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis declared that the Church's credibility is completely dependent on our showing unconditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life's noblest virtues. Appropriately, today's Jubilee Day for Youth looks forward to July's World Youth Day in Krakow, whose theme is "Blessed are the merciful." Fittingly, in today's Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: "This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." "I GIVE YOU A NEW COMMANDMENT" Last week, the Good Shepherd declared, "My sheep hear my voice." This week, we hear Jesus loud and clear: "I give you a new commandment: love one another." In case we wonder, "What's new about that?" Jesus specifies exactly what he means. "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." Jesus loved us more than himself! Paul explained, "Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave; humbled himself, obedient even to death on a cross." Nearly seventeen hundred years ago, Saint Cyril of Alexandria preached: "To love as Jesus loved us? That really is something new: for our love to go that far! Nothing can come before the love we have for our brothers and sisters. No possessions. Not our reputations. Not even our lives! For our neighbors' salvation, we should be ready to die, as Jesus' first disciples did!" "BEHOLD, I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW" Two of those disciples, Paul and Barnabas, describe their trials as something we should all be ready for: "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." But that suffering pales compared to the success they never expected: God "opened the door of faith to the Gentiles." Their do-and-dare zeal

dares us to make their story ours. True, Revelation's "new heaven and new earth," with "no more death or mourning, wailing or pain," isn't something we can accomplish. But "Behold, I make all things new," says Jesus--present tense. For Jesus can indeed work in us and through us to begin conquering human malice with gospel goodness. So Jesus calls us, Pope Francis says, to put a smile on our faces as we reach out to embrace all who live a marginalized existence, call each of them by name, care for the frailties of the weakest, and support first tottering steps on shaky knees, certain that whatever we do for the very least of our brothers and sisters, we are doing for Jesus himself.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

In today’s Gospel Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another as He had loved them. Do we reflect this love in our lives and relationships, especially our marriage relationship? As we continue to 'build a domestic church,' as requested by Pope Francis on this, the year of mercy, April's focus will be on marriage and family life.

"Because our children may be called to become spouses and parents, we want to help them to explore the vocation to marriage and family life."

St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas always identify marriage as an "indivisible union of souls," a "union of hearts," with "consent." These elements are found in the marriage of Mary and Joseph.

God calls all of us to make definite choices, and he has a plan for each of us: to discover that plan and to respond to our own vocations is to move toward personal fulfillment. God call us to be hold, to live his life, but he has a particular path for each one of us. Some are called to holiness through family life in the sacrament of marriage. Today, there are those who say that marriage is out of fashion. Is it really out of fashion?! In a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, many preach the importance of "enjoying" the moment. They say that it is not worth making a life-long commitment, making a definitive decision "forever," because we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Let's learn to be revolutionaries! Swim against the tide; rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love. Have courage! I have confidence in you. Pope Francis After praying together, consider the following weekly discussion question ... 1. What is one virtue I think I would need to grow

in, in order to five myself to another as a loving spouse and loving parent? What is one strength I think I have that would be helpful as a loving spouse and loving parent?

2. Do I share Pope Francis' confidence in me, that I am capable of true love and responsibility? Why or why not?

3. How does our family complete its "mission" to guard love, reveal love or communicate love?

4. What is an "ephemeral love," and how is it different from a lasting and life-long committed love? How does lasting love affect other members of a family?

Your Knights of Columbus wish our Church Community a Blessed and

Happy Easter Season!

Small Church Communi es; a way of being

Church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!
