4. Presentation and Tour by Jason Goelde, Dan Arban
and Mary Ellen Rollins of MBM Technologies
In business for 30 years, the company’s primary services including installing and
maintaining hardware and software.
They also provide disaster recovery and backup services.
They manage networks for some companies.
Additional services include structured cabling and wireless networks and
associated technology like IP phones (Avaya) and cameras.
They’ve been with Konica/Minolta for 5 years for printing products.
Hardware:
For some customers, they still maintain systems that are 25 years old
including legacy systems that still run on DOS.
They have $1 million in parts inventory on site.
Managed Print Services:
At 10 printers or more, it can make sense if you are generating 1,200
copies or higher per month.
They have an enterprise app that will measure the volume of printing,
toner, etc.
With newer printer/copier/scanners, they can charge for scanning using a
Jamex box.
Key points for assessing services:
o Benchmark against others for pricing.
o Why do they prefer Konica/Minolta? Product line of the year for 4
years in a row as determined by Buyers Laboratory.
o Advantages of Konica/Minolta units:
Tablet-like display (Info Palette)
Extremely reliable with steel frame construction and
uniform appearance
Use common components that are easier to service and
maintain.
Forward-looking features:
They put scanner on top to allow single pass, dual
scan of up to 150 pages at a rate of 180 pages per
minute.
Color processor to help with photo quality at 8 bit
resolution.
Printers:
4000p and 4700p models are less than comparable HP models.
o Print at 47 pages per minute black and white.
3100p and 3300p color printers:
o Print at 32 and 35 pages per minute
The multifunction models include scanning functionality.
HP products:
They sell HP brand computers, servers, etc.
They provide the warranty support for the HP products if you purchase
them through MBM. Otherwise, your warranty support provider is
determined by HP.
HP Chrome: Unit can be attached to the back of a monitor.
HP Tablet: You can get a battery jacket that attaches to the device to
provide extended run time of up to 8 additional hours.
HP EliteBook model is very thin.
HP ProBook model is like Tough Books in design.
HP now has a portable monitor that is USB powered that is suitable for
traveling.

Baldwin Public Library - Position Posting
The Baldwin Public Library is the public library of Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, and Bloomfield Hills. It is a Class V library with a service population of 35,000 people and an annual operating budget of $3,100,000. Its circulation is 600,000 items a year, its gate count is 290,000, and its program attendance is 27,000. An equal opportunity employer, Baldwin seeks an IT Coordinator who is responsible for the planning, development, design, installation, maintenance and coordination of computer-based systems within the library, as well as related instruction and training. POSITION: IT Coordinator
Reports to the Library Director
HOURS: 40 hours per week—including days, nights, and weekends
RESPONSIBILITIES: Hires, trains, and supervises IT employees and performs their duties in their absence
Ensures the proper on- and off-site backup of all library data
Administers the wide area network for the library
Maintains and coordinates changes and repairs to the library’s phone system, integrated library system, security system and audiovisual equipment
Recommends, acquires, configures, and maintains all server, workstation, and peripheral hardware
Implements and maintains network security measures via hardware, software, and staff training
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, develops and documents elements of Baldwin’s technological infrastructure
Administers public time, print, and access management system
Responsible for evaluating, selecting, and upon approval, ordering, installing, integrating, testing, and maintaining all computer hardware and software.
Works with the Library Director to develop annual and long-term technology budgets and replacement schedules
Communicates with designated vendors to identify needs and expectations for growth and expansion of services
Assists and trains staff and patrons with day to day computer questions
Sets up computer and audiovisual equipment for meetings and programs
Performs related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in information systems or related field preferred
Three years of professional experience preferred
Experience with a multi-line, extension-based VOIP phone system preferred
Network certification is preferred
Awareness of new developments and trends in technology
Desire to meet and serve the public
Ability to prioritize duties and tasks, work both independently and as part of a team, and assume responsibility
Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job

CIRCULATION CLERICAL ASSISTANT TYPICAL WORK WEEK’S TASKS
A typical work week for the Circulation Clerical Assistant may include:
answer department telephone extensions and check voice mail
empty delivery bins from TLN libraries
check contents of cases used to hold CD-ROMs, CDs, books on tape and DVD to verify all associated items returned
explain and collect overdue fines and fees for lost or damaged items
check out materials from BTPL collection
check out materials from other libraries (interloaned to BTPL)
discuss notes on patron record with patron, explaining and resolving any problems
renew items over the telephone and resolve patron problems regarding renewals
explain residency requirements to obtain library card
process and input on computer patron registration information
collect fees for lost library cards
prepare notes for items to be mended
clear on order status for new incoming material
process items with missing parts
empty returned material bins including removal of bins from around the AMH system
verify accuracy of patron registrations
carry out closing procedures
collect door count from counters and record
check gate alarms on RFID system
change receipt printer paper on desk printers and self-check machines

Dearborn Ignites with New Collaborative Program
Exciting things are happening with the Dearborn Public Library. Join your colleagues on
Tuesday, October 6 as the Dearborn Public Library, Centennial Library hosts noted
library security specialist, Warren Graham, for an all day workshop. Graham, commonly
known as the Black Belt Librarian, will discuss conflict avoidance techniques and a
variety of measures staff can incorporate to keep patron conflict from escalating to a
highly charged level. Come for the morning, afternoon or all day. Event is free,
registration with TLN (forthcoming) required. Free parking is available at the rear
entrance to the Centennial Library.
More news from Dearborn is forthcoming after the successful completion of a three year
service and resource sharing program with the Dearborn Heights Public produces high
returns and minimal concern. Stay tuned for an announcement this year on how that
project may be expanded.
TLN Document Shred Day – September 16
Where else can you spend some time shredding business and/or personal documents and
be treated to a hot dog, chips, soda and cookie? TLN of course! Join us between 10 AM
and 2 PM on Wednesday, September 16 for the first ever TLN shred day. Bring your
library or personal documents and watch them – shred away – as you enjoy an early
lunch on us. No appointment required. Shredding truck will be parked in the TLN
parking lot, ready to reduce your unwanted documents into a pile of confetti.
Speak Up – It’s your Turn To Create Continuing Education Workshops
The TLN Steering Committee seeks your input on topics which will enhance your library
career skills. We have concluded the wide range of topics suggested by member library
staff, four years ago. Time for TLN to develop a new curriculum for the next three years.
Topic and/or speaker suggestions should be sent to: Jim Pletz at [email protected] and
will be reviewed by the Steering Committee this fall. To date suggested topics include:
Generational Work and Life Values: What motivates a Baby Boomer that is
different from a Gen X; are the 9/11 generation driven only by mobile media

Disabilities Act (ADA) standards?
Social Media: Improving or starting your library footprint in the electronic media
age – The impact of Facebook, Twitter and other popular social media outlets as a

Maintains organization's stability and reputation by complying with legal requirements. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Skills/Qualifications: Experience in Security Services, Veteran of the US Military Service preferred. Surveillance Skills, Deals with Uncertainty, Judgment, Objectivity, Dependability, Emotional Control, Integrity, Safety Management, Professionalism and Reporting Skills.

Meeting Minutes
Thursday May 7, 2015
Oxford Public Library
Chair James Lenze called the meeting to order at 10:13. Videoconferencing was available at this meeting.
Amy Rosen moved to approve the agenda. Renee Holden second.
Motion carried; meeting agenda approved.
Mary Robinson moved to approve the minutes of the February 5 meeting. Second by Amy Rosen.
Motion carried; meeting minutes approved.
Budget Report:
Renee Holden reported that she has cut back the budget for selectors because of the demands of the holds manager. This change is possibly due to the change in check-out time from two to three weeks which is impacting the holds list. The holds manager currently requires about $2000 per week. Approximately $41,000 is left for this budget year, the budget is posted to the e-Content page on the TLN website.
Download Destination:
(a) Unfinished Business: None (b) New Business:
(i) The LEAP service for visually impaired patrons has been discontinued. The service did not have a lot of Download Destination participants.
WMA audio content has also been discontinued. (ii) Pre-orders. Selectors are instructed not to order items more than two weeks before the
release date. Advantage libraries, please also follow this procedure. Ordering items too early clogs up the holds list.
(iii) Temporary Records Check (TRC). TLN puts Download Destination on TRC when TLN servers are down, therefore Download Destination patrons are not checked through the ILS for authentication. Advantage copies are not displayed when Download Destination is on TRC. Jim Flury said that when DD is on TRC a lot of problems arise because of the complexity of our group. TLN usually has our ILS down for a short period of time for maintenance during holiday weekends, but TRC is in effect for the whole time period. If we don’t use TRC, Download Destination will be unavailable briefly, but would overall cause fewer problems for a shorter period of time, than having DD on TRC for an entire holiday weekend. Mary Robinison asked if we could put a note on the site to inform patrons that DD is unavailable for system maintenance. Carol Deckert noted that TRC skews statistics because Overdrive doesn’t know where to assign check-outs. The policy committee recommends that Download Destination not use Temporary Records Check except in extreme circumstances as determined by TLN. A motion was put forward to
approve the above recommendation. The motion was moved by Karen Smith and seconded by Carol Deckert. Motion carried.
(iv) Selector volunteers: Selector co-ordinator Teresa Natzke needs new volunteers. Please contact Teresa if you are interested in being a selector.
Zinio:
(a) New Business: (i) Volunteers needed for Zinio subcommittee to address issues including parameters for
selection, how to select new titles, whether to have a fund reserve for additional subscriptions or new titles, and how costs will be shared among the group. Costs are currently shared equally among all participating member libraries, but there is an argument for a formula based model of cost sharing. These issues need to be decided before December 2015. Jim Lenze will put a call out by email for Zinio subcommittee volunteers. Jim Flury noted that it is not hard to do selection. The TLN group already subscribes to most of the titles of interest to the public library community. A formula for cost sharing would be more equitable, and a reserve fund for additional subscriptions for popular titles would be very beneficial. The size of the Zinio group means that we are going to be hitting some of the circulation caps that Zinio imposes, and that with 41 current member libraries, the Zinio group is going to need some structure and governance.
Odilo:
(a) Subcommittee Report; James Lenze shared the Odilo subcommittee report from Ed Rutkowski. The biggest development is the soft-launch of the Odilo e-book platform on April 10. Libraries were requested to test the interface before sharing with the public. Odilo titles are in the shared system, and can be checked out via the SAS but not downloaded. The browsing capability of the platform needs improvement, and subject browsing capability is in the works. Returning items to Odilo from another reader currently doesn’t work. Odilo does not have an Apple ios app yet. The Odilo selectors have purchased 562 titles totaling $12,435.86 so far, around 60% of our current year’s budget. Most items are sale items, but the group did select some metered content. The Odilo subcommittee needs to be more permanent to administer policies and provide guidance for the group. Ed is willing to be part of the subcommittee, but can no longer serve as chair. Next steps include a volunteer to be the new chair of the subcommittee and for the subcommittee to be more involved in the administration of the product as it launches to the public. Please let James Lenze know if you are interested in serving as chair of the Odilo subcommittee.
Other Business:
Mary Robinson shared a very comprehensive circulation statistics report which will be shared on the TLN e-Content Committee webpage.
