Adult Services Committee Meeting Minutes

December 1, 2014

Dearborn Heights Caroline Kennedy Library

Call to order at 9:40

Approval of October Minutes: Karla Gibson (WIXM) / 2nd by Jakki Malner (WYDT)

Workshop Discussion:

The workshop day is flexible and may be determined by those who volunteer to organize.

Topic Suggestion: Summer Reading

Lawrence will be sending out an email on some of the suggestions attendees put on the evaluation forms. By April, we

need to have the volunteers. It’s relatively easy and involves lining up the presenters and securing a location. It would

be ideal to get three volunteers, however; two would suffice.

Meeting dates/locations were approved and are as follows:

February 2nd -Novi.

April 6th -White Lake.

June 1st is a field trip (TBD). Suggestion: Cranbrook (Bloomfield). Other suggestions are welcome and encouraged.

August 3rd -Clarkston.

October 5th -Chelsea.

December 7th -Redford.

Please note: Beginning with the Feb 2015 meeting, we will be meeting at 10:00 instead of 9:30.

December Meeting Guest Speaker:

The police presentation (on safety practices/procedures) was not able to happen because they have training right now,

so this will happen at a later date.

Guest Speaker today (December 1st): Jodi Speck from the Senior Brigade with the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer

Protection.

Example topics this office deals with: Internet Safety (kids) and Cyberbullying, consumer protection, and identity theft,

phone scams, residential care choices, investment fraud. These presentations are completely free.

The Senior Brigade is designed to help people learn about scams that can take advantage of our most vulnerable

population.

Page 13: The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015tln.lib.mi.us/newsletter/files/archives/2015/2015 - 04...The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015 Page 2 - TLN Board Meeting Agenda

Presentation Topic: Home Repair and Improvement Scams (slide show and presentation)

This includes advice on best practices for home improvement.

Consumer alerts are on the website.

Information and tips she presents are always in the handouts she distributes at the presentation.

Information on bogus home equity or improvement loans was presented. Topic of reverse mortgage was reviewed.

Handouts include information and phone numbers for assistance with this topic. Video was shown from the FTC

showing real people who were taken advantage of by scam artists. The topic of foreclosure is discussed. HopeNow is

and entity that can help homeowners. The HOPE hotline is: 1-888-995-HOPE / 4673. That number was the only one not

in the handout. This is a private company that is endorsed by the attorney general because they don’t charge for

services.

Senior Brigade website is a useful tool. Organizations can post events on the senior events calendar. Registering for a

free seminar is very simple and is on this website.

Presenters are willing to travel anywhere in Michigan. These programs are actually targeted to any person, not just

seniors.

WHLK has had a presentation by Jodi from the Senior Brigade at their library.

Another program they offer is called the Community Seminar: Kids and online safety along with dangerous trends. This

is aimed at helping parents. It’s about 45 minutes – 1 hour long.

The programs this office offers change fairly frequently as trends change so the website will reflect this from year to

year.

February Guest Speakers:

Celia Morse and will be coming to give an update on the ILS situation. Celia recently went to Clarkston and discussed

details surrounding their use of Polaris. Each system has pros and cons.

Jim Flurry is going to talk about Overdrive, Zinio and Hoopla.

Language Databases:

Lawrence mentioned Clarkston went with Mango over Rosetta Stone due to cost. Rosetta is extremely expensive.

Another problem is that you only get entry level for Rosetta unless you pay more.

Future Meeting Topics:

Please email Lawrence any topics you would like to discuss. Field trip is June 1st with a location TBA. The only criteria for

a venue to be considered is that we must be able to have a tour and secure a place where we can have a meeting after

Page 14: The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015tln.lib.mi.us/newsletter/files/archives/2015/2015 - 04...The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015 Page 2 - TLN Board Meeting Agenda

the tour. Places we’ve been before: Bently in Ann Arbor, the Opera House, Ford Library, Library of Michigan, Holocaust

Museum, DSO, Midwest Tape, Wayne County Blind and Handicap.

Around the Co-op:

White Lake / Denise Harris-Fiems:

Staff day (library closed) for training and the Directors wife came and talked about dealing with mentally ill patrons. She

might be a good presenter for an ASC meeting. Holiday Mail for Heroes – 550 cards sent. Abbey Days in January for

Downton Abbey. Overdrive and Windows 8 classes.

Plymouth / Katy Kramp:

Switched from doing a monthly schedule of computer classes to one-on-one appointments. Saturday drop in classes

have been stopped. Started using Flipster instead of Zinio. They are turning the Business reference center into a

Business Resource Center and will have a workshop soon. Star Wars Reads day in Oct was successful- several hundred

people came. They thought it was going to be more of an adult event, but mostly families came so next time they will

have more crafts for kids. ESL group meeting monthly. Literacy volunteers may enable it to move to weekly.

Chelsea / Emily Meloche:

Historic newspapers database launched 3 weeks ago. Storiesofchelsea.org is the website. They had a launch party and

have done some presentations. Emily is willing to help libraries attempting this endeavor by giving advice based on

Chelsea’s experience. Many libraries have local papers they may want to digitize. Clarkston, for example, is looking at

digitizing the Clarkston News. Emily says the trickiest things are the cost and copyright issues. In addition, they are

launching a Maker Space. They received a $3,000 donation for this. A 3D printer was purchased and this will be

featured in the Maker Space along with regular crafts. They would like to do pop-up maker spaces around town at

various locations or venues. The cake decorating program was successful and brought 30 people. It was messy but fun.

It a bit expensive at $400 but it got great feedback. Question: did the participants leave with cake? Yes, they left with

delicious-looking cupcakes!

Madison Heights / Krista Ghazar:

Movie program: they got a second license and had some success with double features over the summer, so they will

continue with this.

Wyandotte / Jakki Malnar and Kelly Ray:

Tech tutorials are doing well as a one-on-one format. Monthly pinterest program is doing well. A Christmas craft

program is coming up (ornaments). They are going to highlight local businesses this winter and spring; examples include

a local coffee shop and local yoga studio who will come do a program at the library.

Romulus / Danielle Hansard:

Adult literacy program is off the ground. The training session for the tutors was completed last month. The hardest part

is getting learners in the door. In October they had herbs 101 (Bonnie Mulliner ); great program and highly

recommended. November – Jolyn Felton, coupons program, bargainstobounty.com. November – candy corn counting

Page 15: The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015tln.lib.mi.us/newsletter/files/archives/2015/2015 - 04...The Library Network Newsletter April 13, 2015 Page 2 - TLN Board Meeting Agenda

contest for everyone and there were more adult entries than any other kind. December 9 – Golden Griffon Stringtet

(around $100.00).

Springfield / Kimberly Schaaf:

One-on-one computer classes continue to be successful. Monthly book club and needlework night continue. Mango

languages is being dropped due to budget issues. Lawrence mentioned that Rocket Language might be an alternative

because it’s under $500.

Wixom / Karla Gibson:

Wixom is pushing all-ages programs. An example is pumpkinpalooza: they bought 75 pie pumpkins from a farmer for

decorating. They had tables with all kinds of decorating items and people came and had fun decorated the pumpkins.

Laura Flaherty, (Youth Librarian in Westland) who makes and sells felt flower pins and she came and did a program.

People liked it and she wasn’t that expensive.

Holiday gift tags program: the Children’s Department has a silhouette printer and they did cut-out shapes, etc.

Clarkston-Independence / Lawrence Marble:

Cindy Crandall from new view nutrition. De-stress for holidays. Wine 101 (pairings, etc.). Occupational therapist / melt

method (some kind of exercise method to help with arthritis, etc.) . Social Security program. Gluten Free program.

Essential Oils.

Fun display idea: now through Christmas, Clarkston has a blind-date-with-a-book style display called “Santa’s Secret

Picks”. People were asking for more senior programs, so the Library has partnered with the senior center to offer more.

Due to input from a library staff member, they are doing more parenting programs and are working with Oakland Family

Services. They will also be doing outreach to Moms group. They just hired a Business Librarian (along with some other

staff members). She will work directly with the Clarkston Chamber of Commerce and will work with all the local

businesses. This will be done through outreach; visiting them at their place of business to find out what the business

community needs in order for the library to better provide services or products.

TLN / Brigette Felix

Jim Pletz is looking for ideas for the continuing education series. MAP is confident that there will be a big merger for the

spring.

Memorial Donation for Jeannine Davidson, former Head of Adult Services for Northville discussed. Bridgette will collect

donations and get them to Northville. See email sent out by Lawrence Marble for more information.

Dearborn Heights Caroline Kennedy / Rob Butler:

Rob Lovejoy- Ebay, Craigslist and Amazon program. There was a program on communicating to animals, but the

problem was she went around to each person and the others got bored and left while she was talking to them. Mango

came and talked about their database. Yoga nitro workshop. John Kozak, author of Through the Eyes of Rose, spoke

about communism in Czechoslovakia. History of Hudsons talk. Silver Strings Dulcimer Society holiday social. Facebook

for business. Ancestry.com program. Holly Hibner intro to the ebook.

Meeting adjourned at 11:30.
