The September 12 premiere, at 7:30 p.m., features the full symphony with guest soloist Saxton Rose from the UNC School of the Arts. The remaining three concerts will each feature a small chamber group of the Fayetteville Symphony. November 14 features the woodwind quintet; January 23 features the Magnolia String Quartet; May 8 concludes the series with "A Brass Spectacular" by the FSO  brass quintent. Tickets for the Salon Series are on sale now at the Fayetteville Symphony or at the door. THE VESTRY

August 2013

If you have never been to the Parish Beach Weekend at Trinity

Center, you are missing out on a fabulous weekend of fun,

relaxation and spirituality that is unsurpassed! It was a

weekend full of surprises! The first surprise was upon arrival. When I asked Carmen

Guzman for a copy of the agenda, she said the only agenda was

breakfast at 8, lunch at 12 and dinner at 6! That’s my kind of

agenda, I’m telling you. There were 40 of us, all nestled into

Rector's Corner

Bishop Peter Lee has given special permission for parishes in the Diocese

of East Carolina to commemorate the baptisms of Manteo and Virginia

Dare on Sunday, August 18. Propers for the day, including the opening

collect and readings from scripture will be taken from Holy Women, Holy

Men. Formerly known as Lesser Feasts and Fasts, Holy Women, Holy Men

includes the propers for week-day liturgies commemorating people and

invents including: The Nativity of John the Baptist, Joan of Arc and MartinLuther King. Each Wednesday at the 5:15 service we use a selection from

Holy Women, Holy Men. As we remember the examples set by our spiritual

forbearers we find the strength and direction that guide our spiritual

 journeys.

The rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer require that all parishes use

the readings assigned in the Sunday Lectionary for our worship on

Sunday morning. The only standard exceptions are that All Saints’ Day

and the propers assigned for the feast day of the patron saint of the parish

may each be observed on the Sunday following the date they appear on

the calendar. The bishop may also grant permission to use alternate

readings on special occasions.

The last General Convention of the Episcopal Church voted to include

the commemoration of Manteo and Virginia Dare in Holy Women, Holy

Men on a trial basis. Their baptisms were the first recorded baptisms by

the Church of England in the New World. History records that the baptisms occurred on Roanoke Island in the Colony of Virginia. Today,

Roanoke Island rests in the Diocese of East Carolina in the state of North

Carolina One could argue that Manteo and Virginia Dare are appropriate

rooms in pods deep within the maritime forest that

is Trinity Center. We could gather (or not) in the

common room allotted to us by the staff to socialize,

eat, drink and work puzzles to our hearts’ content.

This quickly became the nerve center of our group.

There were at least 15 liters of wine and snacks that

would have done a reception in the Kyle House

proud! As we drifted away that night to the sounds

of the maritime forest, several puzzle fanatics

remained at their task until morning, proudlyannouncing that they had finished at about 5 a.m.

(and promptly began another one!)

The next surprise came when Saturday morning

dawned crystal clear, a day just made for the beach!

We wandered through the tunnel, keeping a sharp

eye out for the snakes that have been known to

show up there, toward a Carolina blue sky and

emerald green ocean. Children and adults got into

the water in varying degrees of speed, some diving

right in and others inching their way out past the

few breakers. Saturday night, after dinner, we

headed to the campfire site to roast marshmallows

and make s’mores. Fred played the guitar, and we

sang songs dredged up from the 60s and camp days

long past.Surprisingly, meals became a special time as it

gave me the opportunity to share the fellowship of

parishioners who I have seen in church for years

Terry Sanford High as their Bookkeeper.

Stop by the office and welcome Sue to St. John's!
