Over the last two months, we havehad constructive talks with parentsabout ideas for shaping the 2014-15children's Sunday school program. As a result, we are increasing ourpool of nursery workers inanticipation of increased nurseryattendance. There is talk of havingreserved parking in the lowerparking area for parents withnursery or preschool age children. And with our preschool director'shelp, we will be forming a class justfor 3 and 4-year-olds.

We are also changing thestructure of Sunday school. It willbegin at 9:15 a.m with a gathering ofall ages in the Hauser Hall sunporch. Then the children will be led

to their respective age-specificclasses: preschool, 3 and 4-year-olds,K-3rd graders, or 4th-5th graders. After the Sunday school lesson, theywill all gather together in the churchnarthex for the 10:30 procession inthe main church service and then onto Children’s Chapel.

With a potential 70 participatingchildren this fall, we want tocontinue our collaboration withparents on new plans through mid-August. If you have children under12, please join us for the next talk at9:20 a.m. August 3 in Hauser Hall.Learn what will be new for next yearand how you can help build a strongSunday school for children.

RECTOR'S CORNER

THE EPISTLE 3

St. John’s can be described in manyways. During Vacation Bible School, the word that came to my mind was“intergenerational.” Church mem-bers from infants to octogenariansgathered to lead and participate inan event that was marked by fun, fellowship and Christian formationin community. We owe a huge debtof gratitude to Claire Hedgecoe andall of those who came together underher leadership to support thewonderful week of Vacation BibleSchool.

Succeeding generations, over thecourse of almost two centuries, havein some way made St. John’s theirown while continuing and buildingon the traditions that form thefoundation of our parish. St. John’s,like the greater Church, continuallyfaces the challenge of interpretingthe faith to new generations in anever-changing cultural environment.

We have been blessed with a

bounty of baptisms at St. John’s inrecent months. At each baptism, themembers of the church pledgesupport to the newly baptized in hisor her life in Christ. This begs thequestion, “How will we intentionallysupport Christian formation forpeople of all ages?” Your vestry iscontinually wrestling with thisquestion and we need your help. Ifyou have thoughts or ideas please letus know. The Vestry liaisons forChristian formation are DeborahGreene (nursery through fifthgrade), Jeff Baker (youth), and JeanMoore (adults).

The development of a vision andspecific goals for Christian formationfor our youngest members is apriority as we begin a new schoolyear. We are blessed to have adedicated staff member who canhelp us strengthen this importantarea of parish ministry. DonnieWinston, our preschool director, will

speak at the 10:30 service on Sunday,August 24. On Sunday, September 7between our worship servicesDonnie Winston will lead aconversation centered on developinga 3-4 year old church school classand strengthening our nursery.Anyone interested is welcome toattend.

I am looking forward to leadingyouth confirmation and adultinquirers classes this fall inpreparation for our new bishop’sfirst visitation to St. John’s at the10:30 service on Sunday, January 25.More information on the classes andon the consecration of our VIIIBishop, Rob Skirving, is included inthis newsletter.

I pray that August will provideeach of us time for rest and re-creation even as we are planting andcultivating seeds that will germinateand grow during the coming year.

4 THE EPISTLE

Vacation Bible School (VBS) at St.John’s was a success! Our Workshopof Wonders (WOW) had 50 childrenfor the week: they sang songs, played games in the gym, enjoyedscience, crafts, and storytelling in thepreschool, and snacked in HauserHall. What a wonderful time for ourchildren and our church.

So many had a hand in makingthis week a success. Deborah Greene, the Vestry liaison for Children’sChristian Formation, providedfabulous homemade dinners for allof our planning meetings and wasever present with assistance andadvice. Pat O'Briant, our fearlessmusic director, brought thewonderful Bible songs we all knowand love back to VBS with suchenthusiasm. His amazing assistants— Polly Alves, Amy Steffan, andBetty Neill Parsons — were truecrowd pleasers. And Polly is alsoquite the puppeteer! David Guzmanplayed the role of Dr. WOW for VBS,but I refer to him as Dr. YES, becausehe said “yes” to everything I askedhim to do: he even wore a yellowwig and many different hats!

Tricia Walker is officially a saintin my book. She single-handedlycreated our Workshop of Wonders:the decorative hammers, gears, rulers, and wrenches, the giant legosout of cardboard boxes, the hugecrayons out of pool noodles, the life-size robots, and so much more. Ihope you all had a chance to at leastpeek at the huge pegboard andworkshop desk she created for ourmain backdrop. Her husband Scottdeserves a thank you too for letting

us take up all her free time! Our group leaders were so

dedicated, kind, and patient. MaryKate Morgan was with thepreschoolers, Pawley Shields withthe K–1st graders, Arleen Youngwith th 2nd-4th graders, and TriciaWalker with the 5th-6th graders. They spent the week nurturing theirgroup of kids and helping them withall their activities.

We had such wonderfulactivities planned each day thanks toour creative station leaders. DavidGuzman planned the fun scienceexperiments. Edie Olive Binkley,Amanda Nimocks, and Alison Jonesfrom Holy Trinity created the cutestcraft projects for the kids to do.Laura Hatcher, Jane Peacock, andMelene Hatcher were a phenomenalteam for recreational activities. RuthGates is a storyteller like no other. And Jean Hermann and Jane Squires(Holy Trinity) know how to run asnack station!

Hal Broadfoot created a mostdelightful backdrop that let kidschoose to have their picture taken asan artist or a builder. Gert Eymanpatiently took every child’s pictureand cropped and labeled each photo.Mary Zahran managed a seamless,well-alphabetized registration table, and had steadfast assistance fromEllen Jordan.

But our youth volunteers wereAMAZING. I cannot say enoughgood things about them. St. John’sshould be so proud of ourwonderful, talented, caring, enthusiastic youth that gave theirtime to VBS. There are so many

things that teenagers can spend theirtime doing in the summer, and toknow that these kids CHOSE to helpwith VBS speaks volumes. A hugethank you to Wes Naylor, RobertBritton, Christian Haworth, ConnorHaworth, Covey Holmes, CarlyleHelms, Jane Schaefer, Ashton Edge,Connor Sisk, Elizabeth andKatherine Moorman, Sophia Paz(Holy Trinity), Paige Canady(Haymount), Emily Brown (Hay-mount), and Elizabeth and EllieWilson (grandchildren of Bob andLib Wilson and in their 10th year ofSt. John’s VBS!). I think all of youare just awesome.

None of this would have cometogether without Brant Brock andAnthony Ramos and theirsupportive efforts. Thank you to Fr.Robert for leading our group everymorning in prayer, and greeting allthe children each day. LonniePipkin and Donnell Simmons werephenomenal and so willing to helpwith any situation. Donnell evendesigned and built the frame for ourbackdrop with PVC pipe. Genius!

Thank you also to Mary Holmes,Dick Kells, Sarah Moorman, JeanMoore, Diane McKethan, AndyGates, Rob Gates, Andrew vonRothberg, Brian Chandler, ElizabethChandler, Mary Mac Shields (HolyTrinity), and all of our churchcommunity for your dedication toVBS operations; for gathering boxes, cardboard rolls, and other materials;and for your prayers! It was awonderful collaborative effort and aweek that I hope many will treasure.

WARDEN'S NOTESInasmuch Breakfast7-9 a.m. Sep 4

Like the old fable The Emperor’sNew Clothes, by Hans ChristianAnderson, our new Bishop, RobSkirving needs new clothes! Onlythese will be quite visible to all, Iassure you.

One of the great things aboutbeing Episcopalian is our deep andtime-honored traditions. One ofthese grand old traditions is thepresentation of gifts to the newbishop. It is tradition that upon thearrival of a new bishop that theclergy of the diocese provide himwith a new bishop’s ring. Theparishioners of the diocese in turn, provide for his new vestments toinclude (Google them if you need to):

• Purple cassock• Pectoral cross• Bishop’s crozier• Cope• Mitre• Rochet• Chimere• Red scarf• Red chasuble• StoleIn order to outfit our new bishop

in time for his consecration onNovember 8, 2014 in Greenville, NC,the Transition Committee hasrequested that all parishes in theDiocese set aside a Sunday in Augustto collect gifts and donations towardthe purchase of these vestments. Forthose of you so inclined, you can also

make a memorial gift for this cause. For example, the new bishop’s mitre, donated to the Glory of God and inloving memory of great aunt SadieSmith a faithful member of thisdiocese for 99 years—well, you getthe idea. The Vestry has set asideSunday, August 17 as the date tocollect gifts and offerings for thispurpose. In addition to looseoffering, individual contributions canbe made by making out your checkto The Diocese of East Carolina. Inthe memo line please note Bishop’sVestments. We will collect allcontributions and forward them tothe Diocesan office. For thosewanting to make a memorial gift asdescribed above, please contact theRev. Michael Singer [email protected] or callhim at 252-523-6146.

If you would like to attend theconsecration of the Bishop Skirvingon November 8, please put yourname on the sign-up sheet on thebulletin board or contact Brant Brockat the office, 483—7405.

Bishop Rob will make his firstappearance at St. John’s shortly afterhis consecration on Wednesday,November 12, 2014 for our Veteran’sDay service and again on January 25,2015 for confirmation. We lookforward to welcoming Bishop Rob,new clothes and all!
