In February, we hosted Schola Cantorum, our diocese's nationally-recognized choral chamber group, who performed a traditional Anglican Evensong (an evening prayer liturgy rendered chorally). In May, we presented the Army Ground Forces Band's concluding concert in their Chamber Concert Series. This program-year (Sep-May), we are excited to work with the Fayetteville Symphony to bring parishioners and guests five orchestral performances! Our city's youth take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday, August 2 for the culminating performance of the summer Youth String Chamber Festival. Parishioners and guests are invited to hear our young musicians in concert. Beginning on September 12, St. John's and the Fayetteville Symphony present the Salon Series, a four-part series of symphonic and chamber music. The September 12 premiere, at 7:30 p.m., features the full symphony with guest soloist Saxton Rose from the UNC School of the Arts. The remaining three concerts will each feature a small chamber group of the Fayetteville Symphony. November 14 features the woodwind quintet; January 23 features the Magnolia String Quartet; May 8 concludes the series with "A Brass Spectacular" by the FSO brass quintent. Tickets for the Salon Series are on sale now at the Fayetteville Symphony or at the door. I am pleased to announce that the Rev. Jim Brisson will return to St. John’s in a limited, volunteer capacity as Priest Liaison beginning in September. Many of our members will remember that Chaplain Brisson began worshipping at St. John’s in 2006 when he was an ordained minister in the Evangelical Free Church. Jim was sponsored by our vestry for ordination in the Episcopal Church. It has been my privilege to work with Jim on several endeavors since my return to St. John’s and it is a joy to welcome him back to our worshipping community. Beginning in September, Chaplain Brisson will assist in the leadership of worship at St. John’s two Sundays a month. Please note that Jim continues to be on full-time duty with the Army and will have limited responsibilities outside ! Page 4 Welcome Our New Book- keeper to St. John's! THE EPISTLE 3

Bishop Peter Lee has given special permission for parishes in the Dioceseof East Carolina to commemorate the baptisms of Manteo and VirginiaDare on Sunday, August 18. Propers for the day, including the openingcollect and readings from scripture will be taken from Holy Women, HolyMen. Formerly known as Lesser Feasts and Fasts, Holy Women, Holy Menincludes the propers for week-day liturgies commemorating people andinvents including: The Nativity of John the Baptist, Joan of Arc and MartinLuther King. Each Wednesday at the 5:15 service we use a selection fromHoly Women, Holy Men. As we remember the examples set by our spiritualforbearers we find the strength and direction that guide our spiritualjourneys.

The rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer require that all parishes usethe readings assigned in the Sunday Lectionary for our worship onSunday morning. The only standard exceptions are that All Saints’ Dayand the propers assigned for the feast day of the patron saint of the parishmay each be observed on the Sunday following the date they appear onthe calendar. The bishop may also grant permission to use alternatereadings on special occasions.

The last General Convention of the Episcopal Church voted to includethe commemoration of Manteo and Virginia Dare in Holy Women, HolyMen on a trial basis. Their baptisms were the first recorded baptisms bythe Church of England in the New World. History records that thebaptisms occurred on Roanoke Island in the Colony of Virginia. Today,Roanoke Island rests in the Diocese of East Carolina in the state of NorthCarolina. One could argue that Manteo and Virginia Dare are appropriatepatron saints for the Diocese of East Carolina.

Bishop Lee writes: “The Baptisms of the Lost Colony mark a peacefulbeginning to multi-cultural relations in North America. Acommemoration of this event allows us as a people to reflect on thisbeginning and the changes that have shaped our nation and shed light onthe challenges we face today.

"There is a beautiful Icon of Manteo and Virginia Dare at the DiocesanOffice and it points to the glorious Gospel vision embedded in it. It is theGospel vision St. Paul points to in his Letter to the Galatians (3:26-28), thatin Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female.”

I hope that you will join in the celebration on Sunday, August 18.Faithfully,

The Rev. Robert M. Alves

rooms in pods deep within the maritime forest thatis Trinity Center. We could gather (or not) in thecommon room allotted to us by the staff to socialize, eat, drink and work puzzles to our hearts’ content. This quickly became the nerve center of our group. There were at least 15 liters of wine and snacks thatwould have done a reception in the Kyle Houseproud! As we drifted away that night to the soundsof the maritime forest, several puzzle fanaticsremained at their task until morning, proudlyannouncing that they had finished at about 5 a.m.(and promptly began another one!)

The next surprise came when Saturday morningdawned crystal clear, a day just made for the beach! We wandered through the tunnel, keeping a sharpeye out for the snakes that have been known toshow up there, toward a Carolina blue sky andemerald green ocean. Children and adults got intothe water in varying degrees of speed, some divingright in and others inching their way out past thefew breakers. Saturday night, after dinner, weheaded to the campfire site to roast marshmallowsand make s’mores. Fred played the guitar, and wesang songs dredged up from the 60s and camp dayslong past.

Surprisingly, meals became a special time as itgave me the opportunity to share the fellowship ofparishioners who I have seen in church for years, but didn’t necessarily know. Learning not only thenames, but the “history” of these families has givenme a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for,the diversity of our parish family as a whole. Thecamaraderie between those from age 5 to 65 waswonderful to behold! Sitting in the rocking chairson the porch after meals was a time for quietreflection, building friendships or strengtheningfriendships already made.

On Sunday morning at 10:30, we gathered in themeeting room to begin the quiet walk to SandersPoint. Led down the path by Father Robert, garbedin his clerical collar with his Trinity Center t-shirt,the sandy path gave way to a view breathtaking inits sheer beauty. There on the point, you could seeall of Bogue Sound - the backdrop for a stone altarand driftwood cross, startling and moving in their

simplicity. The music, while a far cry from “There’sa Wideness in God’s Mercy” (which they weresinging back home), was absolutely perfect for thelocale and the voices of the choir members andothers soaring out over the Sound moved many ofus to tears by its sheer joyousness. The words in theBCP "when two or three are gathered in my name, Iwill be in the midst of them" came alive at thatmoment! It was impossible in this moment, in thisspace, not to feel the presence of Christ in our midstand in our hearts. It was one of the most movingmoments of my life. It also made me so grateful tobe a member of a parish that can celebrate Christ inall the splendor of the trappings of Episcopal

Church, as well as in simple driftwood cross craftedby Nature, commanded by a loving God.

On Saturday night as we sang “Kum-Ba-Yah,My Lord” (Come By Here, My Lord), I thought whata fitting theme song for Trinity Center. During theservice on Sunday, I changed my mind, for the Lordis already at Trinity Center! A more fitting songwould be the one we sang on that spectacularmorning, “Have You Seen Jesus My Lord?” The lastverse is “Have you ever stood in the family, with theLord there in your midst, Seen the face of Christ onyour neighbor? Then I say, You’ve seen Jesus myLord”.

Jesus Lives! And he lives at Trinity Center!
