RectorDear Friends in Christ,

The God-who-Ioves-us wants to giveus a gift. A special gift. Something that'srare, but not expensive. Something wedon't already have.

This Advent, God wants to give us thegift of stillness. Over and over we read inthe Bible, "Be still and· know that I amGod." Yet we find it hard to be still- hardto give our full attention and our full focusto God. Being still doesn't mean doingnothing; in fact, a line from the recentmovie, Karate Kid, says quite clearly thatbeing still and doing nothing are two verydifferent thin-gs.The-stillness God-wants-togive us is a space empty of all the hustleand bustle and noise that often accompanyAdvent and the resultant rushing around ofChristmas.

God wants to give us a space that is,instead, full of His presence, His love, andsometimes, His voice. How and when andwhere can we receive this gift of stillness? It seems that there is not much room for it

in our daily lives. I'd ask you to considerwhen was the last time you sat still, quietlydoing nothing? Still, without TV or videogames or a book in your hand? I'd guess itwas when you were asleep.

So God has another plan: to give us thegift of stillness in the place we already gohoping to receive something from God - atchurch! On the four Sundays of Advent, the gift of stillness, of focusing solely andcompletely on God, will be woven into our

Sunday worship services. The stillnesswill be long enough to help us centerourselves in God's loving presence and, perhaps even to hear His voice respondingto our heartfelt prayers and praises.

For many of us, these recentChristmases may be the first time in awhile when we've really had to do withoutsome of the things we want. They havebecome times when we do less rushingaround buying and shopping for gifts anda time with fewer parties and holidayobligations. As William Wordsworthreminds us: The world is too much withus; late and soon, getting and spending,we lay waste to our powers and forgetabout the God who loves us.

Not having all those things to distractus leaves an open space. A space forspeaking to God, directly to God, in

-expectant-hopelhat we will know more ofHis love, more of His healing, more of Hispeace, and more of His joy. A 12thcentury prayer says, "Lord, let me not beso busy today that I forget about you."Too much rushing, too much busy-nessdistracts us from God. This Advent I praythat you find the stillness that helps you tofind God.

Blessings,

\

Volunteers to make soup andbread would be welcome.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLEDGING

"Each of you must give as you have madeup your mind, not reluctantly, or undercompulsion, for God loves a cheerful

giver. " (2 Corinthians 9:8)

Anyone who has bought something ontime - a house, a car, a major applianceunderstands the discipline required tomake monthly payments toward achievingthe final goal. It is the discipline of settingpriorities and of carrying through on apromise over the long haul.

Pledging at S1. Paul's requires ameasure of that same resolve, a freely and cheerfully - declared promise tocontribute to the church over the year. It is .freely declared because we recognize howblessed we are by the abundance of God'sgrace and presence in our lives. It is also apromise that benefits both us asparishioners, and us as a parish.

As parishioners, pledging provides adiscipline that we impose on ourselves. We learn early in life that worthy goalsrequire effort, such as studying to makethe grade or practicing to make the team.Sometimes, however, we learn too late thatmoney requires the same imaginativediscipline if we are to control it, ratherthan have it control us. The old rule ofpaying yourself first calls for settingpriorities of spending on what we need orwant, for setting goals, before fritteringaway our resources on the spur of themoment. If our priorities include S1.Paul's and its ministries - and we hopethey do - then pledging can be both a planfor ourselves and a promise for S1.Paul's.

As a parish, that promise is equallyimportant to St. Paul's, for it allows theVestry to be the wise and responsiblestewards of the church resources we haveentrusted them to be. It permits them todevelop a coherent and balanced budgetwith realistic expectations of income. They can then develop and support theprograms and ministries for the year, confident that the income will be there. They can only do that if we, in our turn, commit to making our gifts throughpledges.

SILENT AUCTION

Here it is November again and it'stime to begin thinking about our SilentAuction which will be on Saturday,January 22, 2011. While the auction isone of St. Paul's major fund raising·projects, it is also a fun evening out withfamily, friends and fellow parishioners. Inthe otherwise rather dull month of Januarythe auction provides an entertainingevening, good food, a glass of wine and achance to get some real bargains. Wehope that everyone in the parish willattend and bring their friends and familywith them for this event.

To make our auction successful we

need you to begin looking around thehouse for items to donate. If you arewondering what kinds of things you candonate perhaps these ideas might help.

- We always can use such things asantiques and collectibles.

- For anyone who has a time share orvacation homes, a fantastic item forauction would be a week or weekend atthese locations.

- If you are moving or dovmsizing, think about donating small furniture that isin good shape such as wooden tables, small cabinets, etc.

• The past few years we have also hadwonderful success with people donatingtheir services such as preparing anddelivering a dinner for six or eight broughtto the buyer's home or in some casesdinner was provided at a special locationfor a party of six or eight.

- Preparation for a tea for a group ofpeople is also another idea that has beenvery successful in the past.

- Theme baskets such as GardeningBaskets, Automotive Baskets, HolidayBaskets, etc.

The options for sale items are onlylimited by your imagination. Be creativeand look around your home for gifts thatyou received but you never used and bringthem in for us to auction.

We also need people to begin to getdonations of gift items, services, tickets, gift certificates, etc. from local businesses

that you patronize all year long. Thinkabout asking your garage, dry cleaners,.restaurants, theater, beautician, nailtechnician, housekeeping service, lawncare service, etc. for a donation. Togetherwe can make this a banner year for ourauction.

If you have any questions about thesuitability of an item for donation pleasefeel free to contact me at (301) 870-1418.
