Rector·Dear Friends,

Michael Lindvall, in The ChristianCentury, tells a story of briefly losing hisson at the New York Auto Show 20 yearsago. In the crowd, the father and son wereseparated and Michael tells of his panic ashe contacted security and then went intoaction. Two horrendous hours later hefound his son - about 200 feet from wherehe had last seen him. His son was notfrightened but very glad to see his father."Weren't you afraid?" Michael asked him."Only a little," he replied. "What did youdo all this time?" Michael asked. "Iwaited here; I !c..TJ.ewyou would come. And 1 just kept doing this... ," and heproceeded to make the sign of the crossslowly several times. "Where did youlearn that?" Michael asked, surprised thata Protestant preacher's kid had picked upthis quintessential mark of Roma.'1Catholic/Anglican piety and identity. Hisson said he had seen it on TV, and that itreminded him not to be afraid and thatGod was with him.

Michael, a Presbyterian pastor, saysthat in the last few years he has followedhis son's lead and occasionally takes tomaking the sign of the cross over thecongregation at the end of Sunday'sworship celebration, just as John Calvindid over his congregation in Geneva. Hesays that now he makes the sign of thecross when receiving the sacraments, andwhen he hears the name of the Trinity

spoken. He says he now prays with hisarms spread wide and his hands open withpalms up. And he leads services with hisarms in that traditional prayer posture.

He does not see it as a drift towardsRome. Solidly mainline in hisProtestantism, and profoundly respectfulof evangelicalism, he is not drifting to theright. He is one of a growing number ofpastors and preachers to realize that to doso - blurs the boundaries that slice acrossthe body of Christ. The sign of the crossblessedly confuses the Protestant-Catholic-Episcopalian divide thatsegregates so many. He says that he hascorne to understand that when he makesthe sign of the cross, he is signifying thathe stands under the same cross as RomanCatholic, Anglican, and EpiscopalianChristians and when he raises his arms oropens his hands in prayer he stands withevangelical Christians. He says that byusing liturgical body language he is able towiden and deepen his own experience ofworship. He laments that in traditionalProtestant worship there is little to seewith the eyes and less to do withmovement of the body. Protestant praisethat tends to be expressed largely inmotionless listening and thinking (andsometimes - sleeping).

He says that little movements of thebody in prayer and worship - the sign ofthe cross, a bow, hands open or raised are ways of more fully participating inworship. He reasons that if our bodies aregood - contrary to Gnostic teaching - thenthey too are called to worship God. TheBible does not extol stillness as a virtue.Instead, the Bible commends a way of lifethat is more about movement and rhythm.

LUNCH FOYER GROUP

**********************************

Joshua and his anny marched to the soundof the rams horns, David danced beforethe altar of God, Jesus, always on themove, said, "Follow me!"

My own experience is that myworshipful thoughts are raised when Iraise my hands, and that the words I speakin worship are made more cross like whenspoken under the outward sign of thecross. I know that a small bow tells methat worship is in honor of somethingmuch greater than myself

In a world as filled with wonder andterror as our world is today - it seems thatthe merest of body movements remind me- as they did Michael's son, that we don'tneed to be afraid and that God is alwayswith us.

Blessings,

VACATION BffiLE SCHOOLHUNTING FOR TREASURE

When it comes to faith it seems thatwe are all "seekers" - hunting for thepeace and love of God in our lives. Thissummer's vacation Bible school themeaddresses this ongoing quest to find Godand all the treasures that can be gainedthrough faith and His enduring love.

Vacation Bible School is a much lovedtradition in the faith lives of children. Itprovides lasting memories of friends, fun, music, crafts, stories, and of the caringadults and older youth who volunteer theirtime and talent to make it a specialexperience for children. (You do not needto have children of your own to volunteer. As a member of this parish family - ourchildren are your children.)

Once again, we are inviting you to notonly sign up your children andgrandchildren to participate - but alsoasking that you volunteer some of yourtime and talent to help us make VBSsuccessful again this year. We will needpeople to help cook and serve a lightsupper - people to help with readingstories, help children to do the crafts, helpto organize and clean up before and aftereach session, and join in the fun andgames to make this a truly intergenerationactivity. Anyone older than 6th grade canbe a volunteer. VBS is 5 evenings thissummer. Can you help on one or more ofthose evenings?

**********************************

Dear Piney Famity,We would like to thank you for the

prayers, phone calls, beautiful cards andcaring support during this very difficulttime. We are so blessed to have such a

loving churchfamily.Your kindness will never be forgotten

and was greatly appreciatedLove,

SERVIClE/OU'fJRJEAClBI NEWS:

St. Paul's .!Food Pantry from BarryGebler, Chairperson: The S1. Paul'sFood Pantry is operational and currentlywell stocked to meet our short term needsand objectives. We generally distributetwo to four bags of food each day we areopen. (***Recently we distributed 11bags in one weekend! Word about us isgetting out there! - KS)

The congregation has been verysupportive in devoting time and energy tothe volunteer activities. There are twoconcerns at this time. The3 first is that weare to be watchful to take action on fooditems past their expiration date. This willbe handled by the committee chair and thevolunteers. The second concern is havingthe financial resources to re-stock thepantry as needed in the future. A call tofonn a committee has gone out amongstthe volunteers, but no meetings have yetbeen held. This will be a top priority inthe fall.

Debbie Brown has designed a verynice tri-fold pampWet to promote St.Paul's Pantry to the community. Onceprinted, the pamphlet will be distributed toorganizations and locations that areappropriate for the objectives of thepantry.LifeStyles, Inc.: LifeStyles needsWA1ER, WATER, and more WATER todistribute to the homeless neighbors wehave in Charles County. Many are livingout in the elements in tents now and needto keep hydrated against the heat.Donations of bottled water are greatlyneeded throughout these HOT SUMMERmonths! Bring bottles in and we'll make

flowers. The cucumbers seem to bestruggling a little and the green beans thatwere planted haven't sprouted yet. As ofthis writing, the middle of June, we havebeen two weeks with no rain. I'm surethat when we do get rain, the plants willflourish and grow faster. We will then beable to replant some seeds.

Special thanks go to the Truitt familyfor taking over buckets of water during thehot evenings and for also doing someweeding. They have also plantedcantaloupe and watermelon. A thank you, also, to Jim Gough for his helping handand knowledge. He has tilled some of theplot again, and also planted a few rows ofcom.

With the many helping green thumbsand the rain that should be coming in thenext few days, our garden will provide lotsof vegetables produced with love to sharewith those who come to our food pantry.

The Cemetery Committee met on June 12,2011 and approved the following projects tobe completed for the year 2011. Work onthem will begin as soon as weather permits.

First, remove all boxwood shrubs by thesign and on each side of the front gate area(nothing will replace them at this time to keepmaintenance costs low) and remove all stonemulch along both sides of the front walkway.

Second, replace the tombstone of Mary E.Albrittain (which was stolen) with a whitemarble one since limestone tombstones are no

longer made. The new tombstone has beendesigned from a picture of the originaltombstone provided by Marc Mayer. Thetombstone has been ordered from BrinsfieldEchols Funeral Home in Charlotte Hall.'

Third, the landscaping around the frontentranceway of the church will be delayeduntil an appropriate time for planting.

Fourth, the policies and proceduresgoverning our cemetery are being updated.

Finally, the Cemetery Committee wouldlike to thank all who have made anydonations either to the Cemetery PerpetualCare Fund or the Cemetery Operating Fundfor this year. These help with the ministry ofmaintenance of the cemetery grounds and aregratefully received at any time.
