PONTCHARTRAIN YACHT CLUB APRIL 2016 THE CHART COMMODORE’S CORNER– KEN BUHLER With a mild winter and fast approaching spring, PYC has become a very popular destination In the last month you have seen many new faces. PYC has welcomed 16 new members and many more potential members in the month of March. The St. Patty’s Day party was a great success, thanks to the ladies who did all the green decorations. Thanks Brain for organizing the St. Patty’s Day race. Kaia as usual out did herself for the Membership Mixer. With unending food, drink and fellowship what else could a new member ask for? Court and Kaia are doing a great job in bringing in new members to the PYC family. PYC is going back to it's roots. Our roots are sailing, all you have to do is look at the interest in Sailing lessons. We have adult, junior, private classes, harbor mice, one design and PHRF sailing. Our sailing director Paul Barnes is very busy with planning schedules and all around Sailing fun. If you ever want to be a part of naming the PYC new racing Viper 640 here is your chance. Talk to Rob, our One Design chair for more information. Opening Day is April 23. House and grounds will need help, so we all know what that means. I hope that you will give us a hand in the yard. PYC is our family, welcome the new members, make them feel at home. Take them sailing. I will see you at the club. Ken

    THE CHART

    COMMODORE’S CORNER– KEN BUHLER

With a mild winter and fast approaching spring, PYC has become a very popular destination

In the last month you have seen many new faces.

  • REAR COMMODORE– GIGI SAVONA

This is the ‘finance’ section of the Chart. So, with that, I have to share with you that the State of Louisiana

passed an increase in the sales tax that goes into effect on April 1, 2016. You can find it on the internet,

“Revenue Information Bulletin No. 16-014, dated March 30, 2016, titled: Taxability of Dues Paid to

Nonprofit, Civic Organizations Which Entitle the Member to Receive Access to Clubs or the Privilege of

Having Access to or the Use of Amusement, Entertainment, Athletic, or Recreational Facilities.

This increase appears to be a temporary increase and will be 5% from 4/1/2016 – 6/30/2016. It will drop TO

3% on 7/1/2016 and remain at 3% till 6/30/2018. Unless something changes between now and 7/1/2016, the

state sales tax rate will then drop to 0%.

Unfortunately this will mean that membership dues will increase slightly in April to reflect this temporary

    increase in state sales tax.

And, I can’t go without saying a very sincere Thank You to my PYC family for giving me your positive

thoughts, prayers, hugs, delicious meals, flowers and genuine love to help me get through the loss of my

husband, CJ Savona. CJ loved being a part of the PYC family and spending time at the club with friends, even

though he was not crazy about being out on the water. I’m not sure how I could have gotten through the last

few weeks without all ya’lls support. Thank you!!!!!

    Gigi

I can’t believe that we are rolling into April already. During March, we had one fun race with low turnout but

that was expected as we had two competing events. The weather was windy and picked up to around 20 with

a few gusts well over that as the race went on. On April 2, we will have two on-water club events: the J-30

Mid-Winter Regatta and the first race of our PHRF Spring Series (Skippers meeting at 10:30 for the PHRF

race). We are also planning a Fun’d event on Sunday April 24, the day after Opening Day; this will serve as a

fund raiser for our new Viper 640. The rough plan is for a get together at the club, the race and then a post-

race crawfish boil (details later) Also, don’t forget to get your boats cleaned up for the Blessing of the Fleet

    on the 23rd.

We have quite a few new members and juniors who have expressed interest in crewing for races, but we need

boats out there to accomplish this.

  • TWO AGAINST THE LAKE PICTURES!

Some shots from the Two Against the Lake Race a couple weeks ago that might be fun for the next Chart. Both Elise and I and Jeff Lindheim and Lee Eikel participated. There’s a nice shot of Last Call and our boat sailing together shortly after the start. It was a windy race, the first leg was from Slidell to M1 and even though we were leading the race (by a lot), we decided to retire because the conditions kept building and we did not think it was safe for us to continue. Lee and Jeff did the same. The pics are pretty good, they were taken by Kevin Blank. Elise is tough, she handled the jib all day. Bob Hodges

Ahoy mates! Now that we’ve committed a ton of money in ordering our new Viper, it’s time to pay for it. I say let’s have one helluva good time doing it! Allow me to introduce you to, and let this stand as an official invite to, “PYCs 1st Annual INTERGALACTIC KEGGER” to be held on Friday April 22 from 7:00pm until the last man or woman is standing! It will be a night saturated in competition, and the stakes are high. The individual or team (Flip Cup) winner of each event will take home a club bar card. The more that play, the more you win, so bring your friends, hydrate, and carb load, or just come out and grab a ring side seat. It’s sure to be an epic night! We’ll be serving up burgers and maybe even some late night pizzas for those that need a refuel. Competitive events are as follows:

Shot & Knot Beer Pong Flip Cup (Team Event- 4 to a team)

    Training starts now!

Next, our shiny new boat needs a brilliant and “meaningful” name, so in conjunction with the INTERGALACTIC KEGGER we will be voting on whose name choice should live in infamy on our new prize. 13 names have already been submitted for your consideration, but if you want a chance at naming rights it’s not too late. A $100 entry fee gets your nomination on the ballot, and if you want to guarantee your name lives on in infamy, WE’RE IN LOUISIANA, BABY! You can buy votes! Voting will begin on Friday 4/22 and votes can be bought for $5 per vote cast up until close on Sunday 4/24. Thanks to those who are already duking it out for naming rights. Your current nominations are as follows:

    1. “Skedaddle” (submitted by Portia Bishop) 2. “Hoodwinked” (submitted by Terri Hamilton) 3. “Snake Bite” (submitted by Dick Jones) 4. “Mr. Sinister” (submitted by Kurt Adler) 5. “VX Not 1” (submitted by Lee Eikel) 6. “Out of Control” (submitted by Susan Danielson) 7. “Rippin’ & Tearin’” (submitted by Jeff Lindheim) 8. “Duped” (submitted by Rob Doolittle) 9. “Deception” (submitted by Brad Jarvis)

And I hear that Tom Jarvis and Paul Rees have dogs in this hunt whose names have yet to be determined… The full list of nominations and ballots will be posted and available in the bar beginning on Friday of the INTERGALACTIC weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing record attendance to support our sailors and give this city something to talk about!!!

  • What a fantastic spring we are having. The past couple of months have been great in so many ways. PYC is in full swing with sailing for all ages, social events and membership is up! Welcome new applicants:

Ben Eshleman III You may recognize the last name! Ben has three grown children and has expressed an interest Social Events, Race/Regattas and House & Grounds. Mark and Kristie Gagliano The Gagliano’s have a daughter named Lucy and have been very active since joining PYC with sailing clinics for Lucy and lessons for themselves. Shane and Jenny Mutter The Mutter’s have two children, Ella Jane and Sebastian and want to do some sailing! They are also interested in Social Events Jason Kitchens Jason has just moved into the area from Houston. I spent some time getting to know Jason at our mixer last week and he’s a very nice guy. Commodore Buhler is trying to talk him into crewing in the future. Michael Kernahan Michael is friends with Robert and Holly Parker and was also at the mixer last week. Peter and Kristin Weaver The Weaver’s are relocating from the Maryland area. They plan to bring their boat back sometime in the fall. Jeff and Elizabeth Wilke The Wilke’s have two children, Joesph and William. I spent some time getting to know Jeff a few weeks back and found out he’s a wake board adrenal guy but wants to get into sailing. He has chosen wisely for that! Jeff and Christine Williams The Williams were also at our mixer last week and I had an opportunity to chat with them. Again, very nice people and will be an asset to PYC. Jeff and Karrie Mattia The Mattia’s have two younger children, Zack and Nicholas and older son Josh. As with so many of our new members and applicants the Mattia’s have enjoyed PYC a good bit lately and it is great to see that.

I am very pleased with the results from our membership special. We received applications from all age groups and have added some very nice people to our family. Look forward to more new applicant introductions in my next chart article as we have applications still coming in but have yet to have the Board vote on them. The two membership events this month were both very successful. The Woodlake PTA Pelican Palooza was relocated to PYC due to inclement weather so not only did I not have to carry all my stuff across the street and sit in a tent all day but we were able to show off the club to a ton of people and garnered a lot of interest. And our mixer was a resounding success. We had it all! Great food from Kaia, current members meeting new members and applicants and we even received several applications for membership that night. That’s not happened in the two years I’ve been membership chair and it feels very rewarding. I want to remind everyone to show your appreciation to our bar tenders by tipping. Thanks and Happy Sailing!!! Court Richardson Membership Chair Pontchartrain Yacht Club 985.626.3192 Club 985.318.1177 Fax

  • March was a busy and fun month at PYC! Thanks to all who made that happen! Our book club was fortunate to have the author of the March book, C. H. Lawler, an OBGYN doctor from Shreveport, come to PYC to share information about the book, The Saints of Lost Things. He also discussed his writing techniques and information about other upcoming books of his. Thanks to Mary Patterson and Leah Quinn for arranging this special event!

Erin Powell and her committee did an awesome job planning the St. Patrick’s Day party!! If you missed it, put it on your calendar for next year because Erin has already started signing some special people for it. The dinner that was prepared by Stefanie and Kaia was another topnotch dinner!! Speaking of food, Mark Cooper’s famous fish fry dinner on Good Friday was still another outstanding meal at PYC! Thanks Mark…and of course, Beth too!

Even though it rained on Easter Sunday, the Easter Egg Hunt was still held. Clancey Powell and Cassie Trahan moved it inside where they also did some crafts and played Easter games. Thanks to those two ladies for taking what could have been a problem and making it work for the PYC families!

April is going to be another busy month at PYC so watch for Kaia’s weekly updates. Art lessons by Scott will continue into April on Tuesday afternoon form 1:00-3:00. For more information call Scott at the club. We hope to start having Sunday Afternoon Yard Games this month if the weather will cooperate. Plan to bring family and friends to these Sunday afternoon events!

As you have already seen from Kaia’s recent message and from last month’s Chart article, The Princess and Prince Tea Party will be held on Sunday, April 17th from 1:00-3:00. Please send your reservations to [email protected] by Tuesday, April 12th. This is for all ages of princes and princesses and it is a benefit for the Samaritan Center!

We will have Friday Food on April 15th. All of the other Fridays in April have music and food at the Trailhead so go out there and enjoy the food and entertainment. (Hopefully, no more will be rained out!) Then when it is over at 8:00, stop by PYC after for drinks and camaraderie!

April 19th, is book club and the book this month is Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson It is a non-fiction book which was published in 2015. Come join us whether you have read the book or not because we always have a lively discussion.

Put April 23rd and 24th on your calendars now!! Saturday, April 23rd is Opening Day and Sunday, April 24th is a Fund Race (which is always a lot of fun and laughter) and then our annual Crawfish Boil!! More information about these events will be sent out later in April!

If you would like to volunteer to help with any of our social events, please email me at [email protected] or call me at 626-5880. We are always glad to have additional helpers!

    Hope to see you soon!
