It’s no secret that PCYC is the home of Camp Capri, Summer Friends, and the drop-in program at Cleveland Park, but our Out-of-School Time (OST) programs go well beyond the summer. PCYC is also home to a highly successful after-school enrichment program for youth grades K-5 who attend school in North Minneapolis and are connected to the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ). Several years ago, PCYC partnered with NAZ to serve 120 youth and families with the goals of getting kids to grade level in reading and math, building 21st century skills (also known as so- cial-emotional learning) and creating a culture of achievement throughout the Northside. Through our continued community partnerships, OST has systematically advanced those goals. For example, at the beginning of this year all of our 5th grade class tested above grade level in math and reading (bra- vo!). We’re also pleased to report that OST is building “The Next Stage” by providing more arts-based activities for our students this year including the Youth Fiber Arts Guild facilitated by textile art- ists from the Minnesota Textile Center, singing and performance with the Capri Glee! children’s choir led by our very own Dennis Spears, and special middle school transition programs for our 5th grade class. A round of applause to the staff and volunteers for their continued commitment to the young people in our OST program, and here’s to “The Next Stage!” Two Camp Capri alumni, Johannah Easley and Zaria Graham, won leading roles in the Chil- dren’s Theater Company production of Akeelah & the Bee this fall – a big accomplishment for them, and a proud moment for PCYC/Camp Ca- pri staff, students, and the northside community. Two of our own were performing to acclaim at “the #1 Children’s Theatre in the Nation.” (Time Magazine) Johannah and Zaria participated in Camp Capri for two and four summers, respectively. When Capri Teaching Artist, Dennis Spears, asked them to come and speak with the current Camp Capri/Third Saturday students they eagerly ac- cepted the chance to come “home.” When they arrived, early on a bright Satur- day morning, they were both pretty tired (their production schedule is grueling, even by adult standards) but soon they were teaching warm-up exercises, talking and laughing with the students and sharing their experiences. The students listened with undivided attention. “I learned discipline being here at Camp Capri,” Zaria said. “And I learned how to use a mic, and about singing, costuming and design. I learned all that here.” One student asked, ‘How long was the script?’ “104 pages,” Johannah replied, “and we were getting new lines up until opening night!” The conversation continued, ranging from questions about the logistics of costume changes (“Lots of them and lots of velcro and magnets.”) to hair styles (“We can’t choose how to wear our hair. It’s a sacrifice, but if this is what you want Johannah Easley as Akeelah (left) and Zaria Graham as Akeelah’s best friend, Georgia, in Akeelah & the Bee. Photo: Dan Norman to do…”), to rehearsals and schedules, how to deal with missed entrances or lines, and finally, to some words of advice for the aspiring per- formers in the room. “All of you have a gift that’s your own. Work on it daily,” suggested Zaria. “Stay true to who you are. Listen. Take all the notes you can.” “Be bold and stand in your own personality,” Johannah added. “And always be respectful. Respect will take you a long way.” Spears commented later, “When Johannah and Zaria came to talk with the Saturday kids, it was powerful. They said, ‘the things about theater that your teachers here are telling you are true. You can bank on it!’ Those are gratifying words. I’m so proud of these two young women – and our program.” Fall 2015 • Vol 36, Issue 2 Plymouth Christian Youth Center Bright Futures in Action We are now almost nine weeks into the new school year. Bright Futures in Action

PCYC: A North Minneapolis beacon since 1954.2210 Oliver Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55411 • (612) 522-6501 • pcyc-mpls.org

Dear Friends of PCYC and Children,

A bright new day has dawned in North Minneapolis and on the campus of PCYC. It is such a pleasure to be able to say that to you with not just hope but with conviction! Here’s what’s happening that bodes well for the next stage in the community and for PCYC’s ability to achieve our mission.

There are more people moving into the neighborhood. Thanks to new housing developments on West Broadway and at Penn and Golden Valley Road, we will soon experience the density that North Minneapolis once enjoyed and that fueled the local economy. We are eager to embrace our new neighbors, asking their input on how we can work together to enrich their lives.

There is new leadership staff at PCYC. We reluctantly said goodbye to several long-term staff this year – Karl Reichert, Kathleen Butts and Chrislee Jacobs. We wish them well in their new professional adventures and thank them profusely for how they have contributed to our success over the years. The silver lining is that our new team has fresh ideas and renewed energy. They are building on the legacy of past leadership to take our work in this community to a new stage of effectiveness.

There is more to growing up well than only academics. Our Out-of-Schooltime (OST) program with elementary children and our PYC Arts & Tech High School have made remarkable strides in helping our children close the achievement gap academically. The school and afterschool program leadership and their colleague have crafted instructional strategies that are working. Now we can turn our attention to understanding and supporting their growth socially and emotionally – as we used to do before academics took center stage.

Waiting in the wings on the PCYC stage are two significant developments. The Capri Renaissance Campaign is still in the “quiet” phase but will become more public later this year as major gifts come forth and new design plans are announced.

Finally, the PCYC board continues to carefully protect the mission of Wilderness Canoe Base, making thoughtful decisions to ensure its programmatic and financial health. Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp has successfully managed WCB for the last decade and will likely soon take over ownership of the camp. Our partnership with WAPO has set the stage for the continuation of the Wilderness mission for decades to come. Our youth will continue to use the camp to learn and grow through high-adventure camping at Wilderness Canoe Base in the unique Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota.

Thanks to all the friends of PCYC who support our work with prayers, financial support, and the gift of time and talent. You have made possible all stages of our mission work from Year 1 to the present Year 61. We hope to see many of you on campus soon!

– where we recognize students for exemplary behavior (part of our Positive Behavior Interven-tion System) – and so much more.

We’re also interested in finding new strategies that will work for our students. How can we do things better? If you’re reading this issue of Perspectives and have some ideas, let’s have a conversation. Contact me at [email protected] or 612-643-XXXX.

PYC has never lost its focus on what’s most important: our scholars. This year, as every year, we will make solid progress with an amazing group of students. We look forward to “The Next Stage” of their growth and achievement with pride and conviction.

About John PetersonJohn Peterson is the new Director of Education at PYC Arts & Tech. He comes to PYC with over 14 years of experience in the field of education, including 2 years of teaching at PYC and 5 years as an administrator with Brooklyn Center, St. Paul and Minneapolis Academy.

And, as with every school in the state of Minne-sota, PYC Arts & Tech must also focus on the Multiple Measurements Rating (MMR) that was given to our school. Within the MMR construct, PYC is designated a “Focus School.“ … Essen-tially, Focus Schools are designated to attack the achievement gap head on.”

Some Focus Schools are identified for persistent low graduation rates as well, but PYC does not fall into this category. Last year, 70% of eligible PYC seniors earned their diploma, and all grad-uates had plans for post secondary education,

employment or military service.

The educational theories and opinions around school ratings are very complex, sometimes disputed and often misunderstood. But rest assured, PYC does not take our Focus rating lightly. We’ve got many strategies in place to boost achievement and close gaps by engaging our scholars and families including a rigorous academic program, family breakfasts, confer-ences, Family Bingo Night, our NorthPoint clinic on campus, student theater and arts opportuni-ties during school and after, CARE assemblies

Page 6 —

PYC Arts & Tech recently hosted a BBQ Block Party to welcome students back to school, featuring a food truck, a DJ, and a couple of footballs. PYC is still reaping the benefits of those two hours of fun and fellowship.

Former CAST (Capri After School Theater) student, Deja Freeman, auditioned in Chicago this fall for admission to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. CAST Artistic Director, Kevin West, helped her prepare her two monologues. “Kevin is an amazing coach!” Deja said. We still await word on the final results of her audition, but we know she felt good about it. “I believe I aced it!” she told us.

PCYC OST scholar and Elizabeth Hall 4th grader, Ajacyia Thomas and Sondra Samuels, President and CEO of the Northside Achievement Zone, were featured in a video showcasing the work of NAZ. The video pre-miered at the Minnesota Business Partnership’s annual dinner, where the NAZ collaborative was honored with the Minnesota’s Future award for their results-based approach to closing the achievement gap.

PYC Arts & Tech High School students, teachers and family members – of all ages – enjoyed Family Bingo Night at PCYC on October 8. Food, games, prizes and camaraderie were abundant. Name here, pictured.

Desdemonna, host of the Capri’s “Freedom of Xpression,” welcomed her mom and dad to the show on October 6. Her dad, a former English teacher, even got up on stage to perform. He recited a poem from memory entitled “XXXXX,” to a most appreciative crowd.
