As I write this col umn, the244th ACS Na tional Meet inghas just con cluded. With over13,300 at ten dees, the meet ingwas a huge suc cess. The Phil -a del phia Lo cal Sec tion waswell rep re sented with mem -bers who served on gov er -nance com mit tees, pre sentedtalks and post ers, or ga nizedand chaired sci en tific ses -sions, vol un teered their timeat the Lo cal Sec tion booth orhelped with the meet ing lo -gis tics, and at tended the meet -ing. In par tic u lar, I want tohigh light sev eral events at the meet ing that were or ga nizedand led by Lo cal Sec tionmem bers.

Chris tine E. McInnis of thePhil a del phia YCC se cured anIn no va tive Pro gram Grant(IPG) through ACS Na tionalwhich was used to spon sor asym po sium en ti tled “Be yondthe Bench: Non Tra di tionalCa reers in Chem is try.” Thiswas the first time that a Lo calSec tion Youn ger Chem istsCom mit tee (LSYCC) spon -sored a sym po sium at an ACS na tional meet ing in their ownhome town. Ap prox i mately60 peo ple were in at ten dance

Nearly all of the speak ers were mem bers of the Phil a del phia Lo cal Sec -tion and in cluded Mi chaelHaukaas (Pat ent At tor ney),Mi chael Becker (Fi nan cialAd vi sor), Da vid Wolf (Fo ren -sic Sci en tist), Jo anne Ryder(Reg u la tory Spe cial ist), BillSmith (High School Chem is -try Teacher), Ju dith Currano(Chem i cal Li brar ian), Tim o -thy Garrett (In stru men ta tionSpe cial ist) and Christy Henley (Chem i cal Sales). The di vi -sion of pro fes sional re la tionsspon sored a net work ing lunchin be tween the morn ing andaf ter noon ses sions of the sym -po sium. The event was verywell re ceived and the Phil a -del phia LSYCC sym po sium is be ing used as a model for sub -se quent sym po sia in New Or -leans in March and In dian-apolis next August.

Kristin Lammers of the Phil a -del phia YCC co or di nated thePhilly YCC- and Na tionalYCC-spon sored night out atDave and Buster’s held Tues -day, Au gust 21, 2012. Joe Martino from the Sec tion’s Ca reer Ser vices com mit tee was very ac tive at the Phil a del phiaACS meet ing and took part inthe CEPA Ca reer Plan ningwork shop as a fa cil i ta tor/trainer. Celebrate National Chemistry Week (NCW) 2012! Theme: “Nanotechnology: The Smallest BIG Idea in Science!” October 21-27, 2012 This year, we celebrate 25 years of National Chemistry with the topic of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is all round us and has applications to the environment, energy, materials and health. Whether it’s the nanoscience used in environmental cleanup, to develop more efficient lighting, to make stronger, lighter, and durable materials, or to make nanomedicine that help us get well, chemistry and nanoscience improve our daily lives.
