Pass ing the Ba ton…. Greet ings! The cal en darpage has changed and sud -denly, we’re in 2010!
If you are any thing like me,this still sounds like a “fu tur -is tic” date to you and it issome what daunt ing to thinkthat we are ac tu ally en ter ingthe “fu ture” that we al waystalked and spec u lated about.Sci ence fic tion is be com ingsci ence fact ev ery day.
We don’t have those fly ingcars or “trans port ers” yet, but we do have tech no log i cal,med i cal and en vi ron men talprob lems that need to besolved by the best and bright -est minds that can be mus -tered and, in many cases,CHEM ISTS and the peo plewho use chem is try will be on the front lines work ing tosolve the prob lems that arecon front ing our “blue mar -ble” in space and all of thespe cies who call it home.
When I ran for of fice, I saidthat I wanted to be the “busi -est Chair ever” and I still feel that way now that the votes
have been counted. But inor der for this year to go off as planned, I will need somema jor in vest ment and in -volve ment from YOU ourSec tion mem ber ship. Quitefrankly, I’ve been get ting abit wor ried about the level ofpar tic i pa tion (or lack of it) atour meet ings and ac tiv i ties in the past few years. We are avery large and di verse Sec -tionone of the larg est in the coun tryyet it seems that we are al ways plead ing for vol -un teers for our ac tiv i ties andcan di dates for our of fices.
So I am go ing to start nudg -ing you on a reg u lar ba sis tochange all that. WHY did you join the lo cal Sec tion?WHAT are YOUR pri or i ties?WHAT are YOUR needs andare they be ing MET? WHATare YOUR con cerns? WHATshould/ could we be do ingdif fer ently to get you ex citedabout com ing to our monthlymeet ings and roll ing up yoursleeves when we have an ac -tiv ity like Chem ists Cel e brate Earth Day or Na tional Chem -is try Week or Chem Olym -piad or our own lo calP.A.G.E.S. or ChemDe mos?
SPEAK YOUR MIND! I amgo ing to put out a for mal sur -vey as soon as the lo gis ticscan be worked out seek ing all that in put and more. I will
also be shar ing some de mo -graphic data on the Sec tion so that ev ery one will have agood snap shot of the peo plewe are sup posed to rep re sentand serve.
The Board of Di rec tors iswork ing hard to get our newbud get in place for the com -ing year and we are go ing tohave to look hard at our pri -or i ties and make some toughchoices and de ci sions as wework our way through thatpro cess. It should come as nosur prise, but the Sec tion has -n’t had as much rev e nue com -ing in this year as in prioryears due to the eco nomicdown turn that we’ve all ex pe -ri enced. The Board of Di rec -tors is go ing to en gage in afor mal stra te gic plan ning ef -fort to ad dress that sit u a tionand other po ten tial items andwe will make that ef fort astrans par ent to you aspos si ble.
If each of us do nates justONE HOUR of our pre cioustime and en ergy to our Sec -tion in 2010, that will bemore than 5000 hours go ingto ward the goals and mem -ber ship and over all “health”of our Sec tion. In this year of the Cen sus, can I count onyou to STAND UP andSHOW UP when it mat tersmost?? I hope so!! Judy
