The list of women in top positions can be made very long, most of the shops and hotels are owned or run by women.

There are fewer women than men in Arjeplog but they still have most of the power. This is an unusual state of affairs in Arjeplog and in fact anywhere in Sweden, but ten years ago the situation was almost the same and we wrote about ”The Power Women” here.

Today there is a majority of women in top positions in a kommun that is also the world’s largest winter test centre for the motor industry, which is predominently male.

This & That...• The rear vision of a new vehicle with sporty fastback styling must be severely resticted after it reversed into a medium-sized SUV at the OKQ8 petrol station in Arjeplog in broad daylight on Sunday.

• Last year locals won nearly three million SEK gambling at Kalle’s Kiosk in Arjeplog. “It was a very lucky year for the gamblers, says Andreas Karl-berg owner of the shop. 1,2 million was won gambling on horses and the rest of the money came from Lotto and other forms of gambling. Keno, which is similar to Lotto, gave five winnings over 50,000 SEK and the biggest single win last year was 220,000 SEK.

A letter from John Batchelor.Being a recent convert to The Arjeplog Times, I read with interest the Mayor’s comments in last week’s issue regarding safety systems and their potential effects on young driver’s perception of safety whilst driving.

This topic has been of interest to me for several years as I am involved with both driving safety, through my ‘day job’, and young drivers through a website I run in the UK, in my spare time.

Driving safety has been increased significantly in recent years through the intelligence and hard work of many of your readers but it is still down to the ‘end user’ to drive appropriately for the conditions. We all know, usually through personal experience, that “Newton always wins” or to quote Scotty, the Engineer from the Star Trek ship Enterprise, “You cannot change the laws of physics, Captain”.

Afrodite, a Popular Restaurant in ArvidsjaurDuring the season we have written a lot about all the restaurants in Arjeplog and now we would like to present Afrodite, one of the best restaurants in Arvidsjaur, according to Peter Manner, boss of the tourist information centre in Arvidsjaur.

Peter told us that Afrodite is popular among locals and guests often like to eat where the locals eat.

Afrodite is situated on the main street in Arvidsjaur and is open every day. They offer a mixed menu with food from Sweden, Greece, Italy and the Orient. They also make pizza wth reindeer meat. Their motto is ‘when taste is important’. Mahmoud Ismail aka Mario, who

owns and runs Afrodite came to Arvidsjaur from Lebanon over 18 years ago. He has run restaurants in other parts of Sweden and has owned the popular Afrodite in Arvidsjaur for quite a few years.

How long have you been coming here? This is my first year in Arjeplog. I came for the first time in January.

Occupation:I test electrical and electronic com-ponents, such as radio, electronic steering and parking systems.

Spare time activities: I go fishing in Italy and perhaps I will try ice-fishing here, if we get a chance before I leave.

I have a scooter that I drive and I watch motorcycle racing, Formula 1. I enjoy watching all sports. I am a fan of Torino football club and go to all the home matches.

I also coach a children’s football team.

What is good in Arjeplog?The snow! I have never seen so much snow.

It is tranquil and quiet here. It is wonderful that it is so quiet in the

day, there are no distractions and I can do my work very well. In Turin things are so stressful and busy.

Even my hair is stressed out in Turin and stands on edge. Here it is so quiet that my hair is flat (also because I wear a hat for the cold) and I have to use hair gel to get it to stand up.

What is bad in Arjeplog?The tranquillity and quietness is good in the day here, but it is not good for the nights. It is too quiet here by night. I want more action.

Music you like?Disco music.

I also like Italian music, singers such as Eros Ramazzotti and Ligabue.

What is important in life?Health is important.

My family is the most important thing in my life: my fiancée, my parents, my sister.

When I am with my family, I feel so happy and at peace with myself and the world.

When I am in Arjeplog and my family are not here, then the Fiat group serves as my family.

Boxing used to be a big sport in Arjeplog. Some people who are interested in boxing found out that a full size international boxing ring had been put in storage many years ago.

They started a martial arts club and have now put up the ring in an old school. They are enthusiastic and say they are going to arrange proper boxing matches.

A handful of locals have reached some degree of fame for their skills.

The last time this ring was used was 23 years ago at the winter market when a boxing match was held at the sports hall. 750 people saw the box-ing that day, which shows the extent of interest in the sport. Now there are forces working towards a new era for boxing in Arjeplog.

Since this winter test season is coming to an end, I found myself reflecting, the other day, over the

seasons of the year. I bet that the next time we turn around it will be summer in Arjeplog! It is incompre-hensible - I am just as surprised every year.

Right now we are in the period that we locals call the “fifth season”, ie early spring. It is the time of

year that we like the most as we can drink coffee and grill sausages outdoors. In the month of May we will have reached spring, which is a very short season in Arjeplog. The lawns are full of snow one week and the following week the grass begins to grow and is green. In the south of Sweden, spring stretches over a fairly long period of time, but that does not apply to us and we hardly even have any spring-flowers.

Then, suddenly summer is upon us. My children tend to make sure that they have swum in the

lake before school is out, which is around June 10. I wouldn’t say that the water is warm in early June and if they swim for long enough, they would probably freeze.

In the municipal area of Arjeplog there are 8,727 lakes, so there are enough to choose from when

you want to take a swim or go fishing. In late June, we often move to our summer house so that we can be near water and also to get the feeling of being on holiday. In the middle of the summer it is often so hot that we need to end the day with a dip in the lake to be able to go to sleep.

In early August we pick cloudberries in the marsh-lands and we enjoy the last weeks of summer before

school starts again around August 20. Then it is time to start preparing for winter and fill up the supply of food. We pick lingonberries and make jam and many people spend the autumn months hunting and fishing to fill their freezers. I usually try - although it has now been some years since the last time - to rent the ‘do-it-yourself bakery’ for a day or so and bake a lot to fill the freezer with home-baked bread.

Once all your storerooms and freezers are filled then the winter can come. When I think back

around October 10, but recently I think that the first snow comes much later. Then all of a sudden Christmas is upon us and we start all over again! Have a great week!

Age: 29

Marital status: Single.

Home: I grew up in Boden in the north of Sweden. The past two winter seasons I have lived and worked in Arjeplog. I am not sure where I will go after this season but I hope to return next winter.

Occupation: Receptionist and administrator at BMW. My employer is Icemakers and I work for their customer, BMW.

Favourite food: I like spicy food with garlic, lime and chilli. I like Indian food, North African and Lebanese food.

Dream car: A cool 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner Turquoise in colour.

Present car: I have a black sporty Hyundai I10 called ‘Skrållan’. It is red inside and I am so happy with it.

Spare-time activities: I consume music. My family are very active musically: my mother is in a Blues band, my brother plays drums, my sister was a DJ. I just love listening to music.

I like reading, cooking and eating good food, spending time with nice people. I also like travelling, meeting

people. I need to have people around me, I am a very social person.

What’s good in ArjeplogI feel so welcome here and have felt that from Day One.

The Nature is fantastic and beauti-ful. The people are curious and happy to meet newcomers.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? It is so far away from everywhere and so very expensive and complicated to travel here.

Also, I think there is very little happening in the summer and I would be very restless if I had to stay here all year.

Music you listen to?Hard hip hop, rock especially Glam-rock from the 80’s.

What’s important in life? To feel good. To take care of yourself.

To spend time with nice, happy people who make you feel good.

I think it is important to have a good balance in your life with work, people, your own time, etc. Right now, I feel that I have balance in my life and it feels good.

When the birds start to come back, springtime is on its way. For many locals the arrival of the birds are a significant sign that winter is on its final leg. The newspapers are filled with pictures and stories of arriving birds.

Most birds move south in autumn, some to the south of Sweden and other to Africa.

Often the first birds to return after the winter are the swans but now in the streams of Arjeplog we have seen two beautiful Goosander or in German, Gänsesäger (Mergus

The two male Goosander (storskrake in Swedish) seen in Arjeplog last weekend is the first sign of the arrival spring after a long and cold winter.

The traditional winter market, dates back to 1640 or perhaps even earlier. The market has changed in many ways but many things are still the same.In the olden days, people traded what they had hunted and fished during the winter months for necessities such as salt, sugar, flour and later even coffee.

Nowadays, it is an open-air market where you can get local food-stuffs, handicraft and fishing equipment as well as jewellery, clothes and knick-knacks from all over the world.

The market was a meeting place for people who came to town from the surrounding villages. It fulfilled a social need - family and friends spent the weekend together talking, eating, drinking, doing business and having fun - after being isolated during the long winter months.

Today, it also fulfills a social need and there are many visitors from far and near.

The Traditional Winter Market

During the market weekend, the streets in the centre of town will be closed to traffic from Thursday afternoon until Sunday at 20.00. Drottninggatan will turn into a two-way street and should only be used by people who live there and by Konsum customers.Most of Storgatan and the streets by the market square will be closed to traffic.

Try differenT foodsThere are many different foods to try and buy at the market, such as souvas (smoked reindeer meat), salted herring, sausages, hamburgers, hot chips, sandwiches, bread, honey, cakes, sweets and lots more.

WhAT To doThe Silver Museum is open all weekend (Sat 10-16, Sun 10-14) where you can see permanent exhibi-tions and buy from the shop. During the weekend there will be a handi-craft exhibition from a few places in the north of Sweden.

Many of the shops are open on Saturday and Sunday and many have special offers.

There is a free music concert at the church on Saturday at 15.00

At Hornavan Hotell in Skepps-viken, many local handicraft artists will be selling their wares at the “Hantverkargränd” on Friday and Saturday. There will also be a tattoo artist where you can drop in and have a tatoo.

The square and main streets in the town of Arjeplog turn into a market place with stands. Many people come from far and near for the 3-day market.

Nowadays, you can still see people selling furs and meat and fish like in the olden days. But today there are many other products for sale, as well.
