When writing the letter for the September issue of The

Mainlander, the idea that we would still be in the throes

of the pandemic of COVID-19 was such a remote

thought. We had high hopes that our country would

realize the importance of wearing a safety mask and

keeping a social distance of 6’ whenever we were out in

public. We thought there might be a vaccination on the

horizon but, so far, that has not happened. That being

said, we still need to keep our guard up, and we still need

to respect the lives of others as we go about our daily

business. Be safe and stay well is the motto of the day.

Fall is approaching and the running of the HOA is going

to have to be creative when it comes time for nominating

residents to be new Board members for 2021. It is

uncertain that we will be able to hold even our annual

meeting if the pandemic continues but we will be looking to our attorneys for guidance as to how to

accomplish meetings without members. Snowbird residents have always been a huge part of our

community both by their volunteering participation and their realization of the need to have a role in

how this association is run by exercising their right to vote. Whether or not they will be returning to us is

another question yet unanswered for our next season.

Even though asking for volunteers often lands on deaf ears, I personally hope there will be those of you

reading this today that will come forward and help to run the community in 2021. There is room for

diversity, there is a need for new ideas and there is certainly a welcome sign hanging for all who choose

to give a few hours of their time each month to make Mainlands 1 and 2 a great place to live.

Hopefully, you have noticed and are pleased that we have finally accomplished the job of repaving our

parking lots! It was an unusually tedious project that continually got hampered by the rules of ADA, the

process of permitting, the weather and our insistence in getting it done the “right” way. There are still a

few minor improvements to be made but the majority of the work is done and we can move on to the

next project we are working on…. renovating the outdoor Men’s and Ladies’ bathrooms. We have ap-

plied for a City grant to help with the cost but we will move forward even if the grant is not given to us

I want to take a moment to give applause to Ruth Richard, a member of our Board who has done an

outstanding job of keeping us informed throughout this pandemic with the Weekly Blast she has

published every Friday since the moment we were unable to have enough events or items of interest to

be able to produce our Mainlander as we normally do. I know if you are reading this, you have access to

the internet and can read her words each week, but please know, that we print copies of the Blast for

those who do not have the ability to see it online and they are always available in the office. Don’t

hesitate to shout a thank you to Ruth when you see her about the community. Many have said thank you

via the “reply” button and I am proud to add my thank you to that growing list.

Hope you all have signed up for our Labor Day BBQ on September 7th. I believe all recipients of the

July 4th meal were pleased with the bargain they received for a mere $5.00 If you haven’t signed up yet,

be sure to do it before the end of the day so you won’t be left out.

Once again, be well and stay safe… we hope to see you soon.

How to Prepare for a Hurricane*

Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over ocean water and often move toward land. Threats from hurricanes

include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents and tornadoes. The heavy winds

of hurricanes can cause damage or destroy homes, buildings, and roads as well as cause power, water, and gas outages.

These effects can injure or kill people, disrupt transportation, and pollute drinking water. Hurricanes cause deaths and

injuries primarily from drowning, wind, and wind-borne debris. The impact from hurricanes can extend from the coast to

several hundred miles inland. To find your risk, visit FEMA’s “Know Your Risk Map.” Be better prepared for this hurri-

cane season, and learn more at ready.gov/.

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES

You can build your supplies over time by adding a few items each week or month. Gather in advance the necessary sup-

plies and items you will need to stay safe after the hurricane passes and as you start to recover. Stock food items that do

not need refrigeration and will last. Regularly replace items like water, food, medication and batteries that go bad over

time. For a complete list of emergency supplies, visit ready.gov/prepare and then check them off your Hurricane Prepared-

ness Checklist once you add them to your emergency kit.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION

Make sure you have everything you’ll need to get in touch with your family either through cellular phones or email.

* MEDICAL NEEDS Be equipped to tend to any current or unexpected medical conditions your family may have.

* CRITICAL DOCUMENTS Place any important documents in a waterproof container to help keep them dry and easily

accessible.

* TOOLS AND SAFETY ITEMS Small items like matches, flashlights, a multi-purpose tool, and a whistle can make a

huge difference for your family while weathering the storm.

* FOOD/SUPPLIES Have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food and water for your family. Remember to

pack anything specific to your family’s needs.

* HYGIENE AND SANITATION Practicing good hygiene can stop the spread of bacteria and infectious disease.

* PROTECTIVE GEAR Protect yourself by packing warm clothes and blankets to prevent hypothermia. Don’t forget

protective footwear and gloves too.

* COMFORT & PRICELESS ITEMS You may be away from your home for an extended period and your property

may be damaged. Grab any items that are irreplaceable or may provide comfort to your family, especially your children.

Ask yourself, “What would I need for myself and my family if a hurricane struck?” Add any of these specific items to your

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist.
