This month’s issue is dedicated to the safety and welfare of all resi-

dents. The Board recently attended a training session where we

were put through a routine of reviewing what would happen in our

community if a disaster struck… hurricanes, floods, trees down,

lightning strikes, etc. and we had to plan an evacuation route using

a map in a dark room with only a flashlight to guide us. We got a

real sense of the need for a “plan” when faced with natural disasters

that could be our reality in the upcoming Hurricane Season.

One of our first steps towards safety will be to strengthen our com-

mittee that helps to lower and raise shutters for those who cannot

do this for themselves. Many now have impact windows and don’t

have to worry about this, some have both and will need to lower the

shutters if a storm comes, and many still have the old (but reliable)

clamshells which need to be in good working order so they can be

lowered without any issues. Checking on them now should be eve-

ryone’s priority.

The second important thing to identify is that neighbor or friend who is homebound or has special needs. We want

to make sure we know who should be on such a list and will pass this information on to the City’s response team so

they can be the first to be taken care of in an emergency situation. Your help will be needed there, too, in letting us

know who might be in need. Information on both subjects above will be found elsewhere in this issue.

FYI – there are 5 CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) trained members (including myself) who live in

Mainlands 1&2 and Mainlands 3. We are the first responders for our community and directly linked to emergency

services in the City and County. We can always use more members if you are interested.

On a personal note, I have been honored by the Broward County Historical Society as Tamarac’s “Pioneer of the

Year”. This award was given to our resident, Larry Wark, who was the first policeman hired in Tamarac, proudly

wearing Badge #1. That puts me in great company and I want to invite any of you that are interested to attend the

ceremony which is in Parkland on Saturday, May 20th.

or damaging windstorm. We would like you to call the office at 954-731- 3227 to get yourself on a list so we can be prepared

to meet your needs. You should call if you are homebound and alone, if you are using a scooter or wheelchair, if you require

oxygen or special medications. f none of the above applies to you but you have a neighbor who fits the category, please be

sure to get the message to them. We want everyone to be as safe as possible and the information will be shared only with the

membering that this is a free service but it does not include trimming plants that have grown over the shutters or serious re-

pairs if you haven’t taken care to have them checked out yourself. This committee serves only those in need who have no-

where else to turn.

JOIN THE TEAM… We are organized and operate this committee with a plan so no one has to bear the burden alone. It

could take one or two hours of your time but you would be performing an invaluable service to a resident in need. It would be

especially helpful to have those who are bilingual join our group. Sometimes communication is more troublesome than the

END OF AN ERA… June 30th marks the end of our Recreation Lease with the Najors. As of July 2017, all homeowners no longer have to add $12.50 a month towards the payment for the Rec. Lease. Not likely to make any of us much richer, but enough to make our monthly fee one of the lowest in South Florida!

Meet Rita Rifenburgh,

Our 100-Year Old Neighbor* Rita Rifenburgh, a snowbird regularly

visiting Mainlands 1 & 2, has just cele-

brated her 100th birthday.

Rita was born in Germantown, N.Y. and

lived there all her life. From there, she

observed the world changing, going from

“Horse and wagon to the automobile”.

Through the years, she noticed other

changes such as the price of things. “My

grandmother used to give me twelve

cents and say, “Here, now you run across

the road and get us a loaf of bread…”

Rita admits she’s an old fashioned girl.

Her only son, Bruce, got her a computer

and she said: “Here, you take it back!”.

She didn`t like it even though she en-

joyed word puzzles. Never been on an

airplane, either. “I don’t want to go on

one! I want my feet on the ground!

Life was not all that easy for Rita. “I had

quite a few things that weren’t very nice in my life”. My husband, Harry, died in 1966 in an

automobile accident. I lost my first baby when he was six weeks old. Also, I had lots of op-

erations.”

Rita worked as a Head Teller at the local bank for 16 years. In 1945, she became Treasurer

for the local American Legion Auxiliary, a position she held until a few years ago.

Mainlands 1 & 2 residents are proud to have you as a neighbor and wish you years and

years of healthy comebacks.

Special Civic Meeting Held March 30 to Vote on

the Release of Funds from Reserve Accounts.

A Special Civic Meeting was held March 30th for

votes to be taken to authorize the Board to exe-

cute the projects which were identified as due or

overdue in our Reserve Study.

Seven items were specifically voted upon:

1. Item 2341 - Buildings - Capital Repairs ($13,261)

Monies to be used to upgrade kitchen exhaust sys-

tem and repair of storage closets which need replace-

ment due to rotted and/or moldy wood.

2. Item 2342 - Picnic Pavilion- replace

($2750). Monies to be used for demolition. Quotes

will be obtained for replacing with a larger en-

closed facility instead of a prefabricated unit as

suggested in Reserve Study. (No action can be

taken on this until the Recreation Lease has ex-

pired - July 1, 2017).

3. Item 2747 - Clubhouse Kitchen - Remodel

($10,609) Monies to be used for cabinets and

deep sinks.

4 & 5. Item 2751 - Administration Building and

Clubhouse Bathroom Remodels ($21,219)

Monies to be used to replace 8 toilets and use of

cameras to inspect pipes and lines, relining if

necessary. Application to City of Tamarac has

been submitted and approved so $1200 rebate

will be given towards cost of toilets. This appli-

cation also includes the benefit of no charges for permits.

6. Item 2763 - Pool Furniture - Partial Replace ($2917) Monies to be used for purchase of two round con-

crete umbrella tables with benches to replace the two rotted benches which currently reside at the end of

each pool. It also includes purchase of five umbrellas - 2 for new tables, 2 which are in disrepair and 1 for

the one that is missing.

7. Item 2783 - Pool Heaters - Replace ($13,042) Monies to be spent on replacement of two heaters at

West pool.

All items were almost unanimously approved by residents and/or voting by proxy ballot.

Board Meetings Schedule for

Summer 2017

In its meeting held Friday, April 14 2017,

the Board Members voted to hold Board

Meetings during the months of June, July

and August 2017. They will be held the

2nd Wednesday of each month in the AB

at 7:00 pm.

The next meeting for the Board of Direc-

tors will be held Friday, May 12, 2017 in

the Administration Building at 7:00 pm.

During the meeting, the Board interviewed an attor-

ney about delinquent maintenance accounts which

our current firm is not contracted to handle. All ef-

forts are being made to get accounts up to date be-

fore the budgeting process begins.

MAKE SAFETY YOUR PRIORITY… Soon we will be into Zika season and residents need to be aware of the dangers of this small, but

mighty, beast. The Zika virus is carried by mosquitoes so protect yourselves at all times against a bite.

Don’t have any standing water in your yard (flowerpots, decorations, etc) because it takes only a thim-

bleful of undisturbed water for these mosquitoes to breed in. Wear long sleeves while gardening and

keep the doors and windows to your home closed at all times. While you’re clearing your yard of any-

thing that might be holding water, think about the upcoming Hurricane Season and the chore you will

have bringing in ALL items that may become flying missiles should a storm strike. Planters and lawn

ornaments are no match for 100+mph winds. Even the lowly trash cans will need to be in a secure place.

Don’t wait until the last minute to check out your yard for potential hazards.

And while we’re on the subject of hurricanes…you should be preparing for that now, too. Batteries, pre-

scriptions, water, first-aid kits, portable radios and non- perishable foods are some of the things you can

have on hand before any warnings come.

Do you have a dog or cat? Tamarac has one of the very few shelters that allow animals but you need to

register beforehand to be assured of a space for you and your pet.

You will find a page in this issue that asks for your help in identifying those who are homebound or

have special needs. Be sure to look for it and let us know just who would need assistance in an emer-

gency. And above all, if you are able bodied and can help us to help others, please call the office and

offer to donate an hour of your time. It will be most appreciated.

They’re Back!

Yes, burrowing owls are back after a period when one could hardly see any young

ones emerging from their burrows. Several young, with their fluffy feathers, were

spotted here and there furtively examining this new world of theirs under the watch-

ful eye of their mother. In some spots, the fathers have moved to a nearby burrow to

allow for the young to fully develop and grow before they are sent on their way to

independence.

WHAT TO TAKE TO BED WITH YOU - Not a joke... Put your car keys beside your bed at night. Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or ga-rage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is

Michael and I am your new neighbor in Mainlands 1

& 2. Nance and I recently moved here from Madi-

son, Wisconsin. We have enjoyed meeting, and get-

ting to know some of our wonderful neighbors.

Now I’m hoping to get more involved with our com-

munity by offering you protection from scams in the
