A word from the President...

Sometimes I think we are our own worst enemies!

We spend a lifetime learning through educational

institutions or experience gained just through living. We

are so wealthy in our combined knowledge which

makes us such interesting creations here in our very own

community. Why then do we fall prey to the multitude

of scammers out there who are out only for their

own gratification? It’s not an easy question to answer

because most of us have grown up believing in the

inherent good in the world. We have conducted

ourselves with dignity and honor and believe strongly in

the Golden Rule… “do unto others what you would

have done unto you”. We would not consider hurting

our neighbors or turning our backs on what is the

wrong way to do things. We play fair and don’t

But the world, it seems, has changed when we weren’t looking. Doors have to be locked, security

cameras are a necessity in every home and we are beginning to learn the hard way that not all people

are as good as we expect them to be. Recently, we have been hearing about items being stolen from

various yards in the community. Flowerpots, bicycles and yard ornaments seem to be the favorite

targets of someone who has no sense of common decency and may well be one of our own neighbors!

We are about to review security tapes which might help us to identify this person who desperately

needs help. Unfortunately, we now have to be mindful of what we leave outside if we want to keep it

at all. Try to protect yourself in the best way possible and don’t leave out anything you value.

Thieves are also invading our privacy by phone calls which scare us into believing something is wrong

with our bank account, our credit cards, or even our grandchildren being held hostage in some jail for a

crime not committed! Scams and schemes to terrify us are almost a daily occurrence in most of our

homes… it’s almost better never to answer a call unless you recognize who is calling. If it is

legitimate, they will leave a message. If it is from someone unscrupulous, they will just hang up.

Then there are those who come banging at your door… please know that Tamarac is a NO

SOLICITING City and we further enforce that concept by being a NO SOLICITING community. Feel

free to tell that to anyone who comes uninvited to your door. They don’t belong here and they are just

one more confusing force for us to deal with.

Each month, our Mainlander will be sharing an article written by the Seniors vs Crime division of the

Broward Sheriff’s Office. If only one of you is spared the agony of what can happen if any one of the

schemers approaches, it will be well worth the effort it takes to read. (See page 9 in this issue for the

first article).

A fond farewell is given to all the snowbirds heading back to their respective states or countries. We

thank you all for being a vital part of this community and wish you a safe journey home... pam

appreciate the “every man for himself” way of life. We are neighbors helping neighbors and we have chosen to live in a community with rules just for the safety and camaraderie that we find here.

Profiles By Ruth Richard

A true Floridian, Randy Mayweather was born and raised in

Fort Lauderdale. One of 9 children, he attended Boyd

Anderson High School. An avid swimmer, Randy received a

scholarship to Albany State College in Albany, Georgia (a

Historic Black College) The Albany State swim team took

first and second place in National competitions while Randy

was part of the team.

After he graduated with a degree in business administration,

Randy joined the Navy and was stationed in Charleston, SC

for 6 years, He then spent time on the aircraft carriers USS

Theodore Roosevelt in Norfolk VA and the USS Kennedy

based in Jacksonville, Fl. Randy was an Information

Systems Technician Chief (ITC) SW and worked in intelligence once he received clearance.

He also spent time in Puerto Rico, working in communications and on computers.

After 20 years, Randy retired from the Navy and returned to Fort Lauderdale. Randy has lived at Mainlands 1-2

for 7 years. He and his wife of two years, Beverly, love the quietness of the community, and the friendliness of

it residents. Randy has one daughter, Lyndsey, who lives in Augusta, Georgia.

Randy regularly swims laps in the Mainlands pool. He has been involved in the US Masters Individual Medley

Swimming program, a program related to the Senior Olympics. The Individual Medley involves four strokes –

breast, butterfly, back and free style. His favorite is the breast stroke. Randy’s goal is to swim the Individual

Medley at ages 80 and 90. Not a bad goal to have. Biking is another activity he enjoys regularly.

Randy has worked at Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale as a Tour Coordinator. He makes sure all the tours are

on time and is responsible for coordinating the volunteers who give the tours. When he works there at night, he

is responsible for security. He continues to help seniors with their computer problems and has rebuilt computers

as well as solving computer related issues for individuals. As a volunteer, Randy has taught hands on CPR

through the Red Cross and has been involved with Junior Achievement, teaching teens about finances and

living. He teaches Sunday School classes at his Church and has volunteered at Mainlands for our barbeques.

Randy told me some interesting stories about coincidences in his life. When he attended high school boys did

not take home economic courses, but he and another boy were allowed to take typing. Because he could type 75

wpm, he was able to get involved with computers when he joined the Navy. In college at the U of Florida in

Gainesville (before he went to Albany State), he stayed in a dorm his father (who was a master tile setter) had

built. Also, his mother used to clean the house he now lives in, when she was working as a housekeeper.

Randy’s mother is 88 and still lives in the house where he was born.

Randy Mayweather is another of our talented Mainlands residents. How lucky we are to have him and Beverly in

our community

The 2018-2019 season is drawing to a close and snowbirds are heading north. We wish to thank all those who contributed to our activities and hope to see them in health next season. We wish to mention all those who made the holding of the Pétanque Games and Tournaments, the Military Whist activity, the Horse Racing activities and, especially, the delicious meals served during our monthly meetings. Our Spaghetti dinner of March 10 was successful and drew 250 persons. During our March meeting, 8 members accepted to serve on the Board. A sign that our club is healthy.

Giving back to the community:

A) During the last meeting of the B.O.D. members accepted to add $237.43 to the sum of $350. already reserved

(for a total of $ 587.43) to replenish the sand as required in the pétanque courts.

B) A sum of $200. has been voted to compensate the Mainlands 1 & 2 Civic Association for the occasional use of

various utensils (forks, knives, napkins, etc.) during our meetings..

C) Finally, the B.O.D has voted to allocate the necessary funds for the refurbishment of the Shuffle Board and the

Bocce court. A team led by Gilles and Carl will undertake this project. Anyone wishing to give a hand, please call

Seniors Vs. Crime : April 2019 There is a glossary of Tech and Charitable Scams. Law Enforcement, along with

Federal and State agencies, work hard on behalf of the consumer to convict and

close down the scammers. Many of us have been targeted while using our

computers by this type of company. It interrupted us while in use and told us to

call a telephone number because our computers needed to be cleared of a virus

which infected the computer.

The good news is that the Florida Attorneys Generals office has charged a Sunrise Tech Company,

American PC, with fraud. The IT phone scam targeted the unsophisticated and especially Senior Citizens.

Consumers were paying up to $1,700 to rid their PC of non-existent viruses and malware. At best APC left

consumers no better off. At worst their computers were slower and more vulnerable to tech and security

problems.

The good news continues. Vets Made Industries was shuttered. The company's plan and project was to

train unemployed and disabled veterans. The company, during the past 5 years, collected 6.5 million

dollars while not training ONE single veteran. The sad part is that the company's president and CEO, John

Campbell, was a retired US Army Lt Col. A veteran scamming Veteran's.

If you missed the Info Fair last month, you missed a great opportunity to have fun and be educated at the same time. Manlainds 1&2 artists had their creative works on display, Chef Michelle Jones cooked up a storm, feeding us all with her healthy and delicious dishes. Herb Daley of our BSO seniors vs Crime Unit presented several scenarios on scams we need to be aware of. Chamberlain University of Nursing gave soothing hand massages. The Women's Club enticed us with wine and cheese and shared their ideas for next season. "Project Perch" gave a wealth of information on our burrowing owls who have chosen Mainlands 1&2 for their Home.

How our Restrictions benefit you! By Phyllis Payne

Secretary & Chairman of the Violations Committee

Why did you choose to purchase a

home in Mainlands 1&2? It was

probably the same reason I chose to

live here in 1999. The area was very

clean & people took pride in the

appearance of their home and yard. It

appeared peaceful & felt safe. I

definitely liked the price of the home.

I did not have to follow any By-laws

or Restrictions where I lived before

but I chose to live here and agreed to

follow the rules and regulations to

keep our area looking great.

What did you do with all those

papers and the By-laws &

Restrictions booklets after your

closing? I tossed all of mine in a drawer and didn’t look at them for a year or two. I should have

gone over the By-laws and Restrictions to see what I signed and agreed to do.

Many of you have seen me at your door asking for your help in correcting a violation of our

Restrictions or on my bike placing an orange notification of a parking violation on a vehicle.

Some of our Restrictions will tell you about the following:

-Occupancy of lots – age of people allowed to live here

-Renting a house

-Background screening on owners or renters

-Notification to the Board when you add a person to your home

-Parking different types of vehicles & where they can do so

-Owning animals & picking up after them

-Upkeep of lots

-Making changes to your home

-Possible fines for not following rules and regulations

These are some of the things I have been working on. I have also helped people with contractors who

did not complete what they were supposed to do.

There are some who think nothing is being done when they file a complaint, but I assure you that is not

correct. It may take longer to see results because I want to work with people, not fine them or turn the

problem over to an attorney. Sometimes a kind word and offer to help your neighbor would be greatly

appreciated by them.
