tameTiMEsCourt sets suspects freeThree women aged 20, 22 and 39 were released by the palm ridge Court on Monday because of a lack of evidence after they were arrested for possession of stolen goods to the approximate value of r1 million. It is alleged that the three women, who are neighbours residing in Sali section in Katlehong, were found in possession of more than 200 boxes containing jeans valued at more than R1 million.Captain Mega Ndobe, Communications Officer for Katlehong Police Station, told tame TIMES that North West police officers were investigating a case of a truck hijacking which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning. “During

investigations, the truck was spotted in the Alrode area. Police followed the lead and proceeded to Katlehong, where more than 200 boxes containing jeans valued at more than ±R1 000 000 were recovered inside three different houses in Sali section. Three women found in the merchandise hideout houses were arrested for unlawful possession of suspected stolen goods,” said Ndobe. It is alleged that a truck was hijacked by five armed suspects who were driving a silver VW Polo fitted with blue lights. The truck-driver was left stranded in North West and police are still looking for five suspects involved in the hijacking - the investigation continues.

Natalspruit Hospital management is appealing to the public to collect the bodies of the relatives who have died while receiving care at the institution. Some of these patients died as far back as August, but they have still not been collected for dignified burials. If the bodies are not collected within 21 days, they will be buried in pauper’s graves. Public urged to collect deceased relatives

Hundreds of dogs, accompanied by their owners, flocked to an open space opposite Katlehong North Police Station to have their dogs dipped, vaccinated for various diseases and to receive educational tips on how to keep their animals healthy at all times. Speaking to tame TIMES, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) inspector from the Germiston/Bedfordview branch Jade Nel said they are embarking on an outreach programme targeting people who cannot afford veterinary services. “We are doing dog vaccinations, dipping and an animal educational campaign. We have also taken injured or unwanted dogs away from the public and many dogs were given treatment. Our mission is to come to the township once a week, but due to financial constraints, we will only manage to come once a month. We will also identify spots in the township where we can deliver our services. We were impressed, however, that most of the dogs we inspected are well looked after,” explained Nel.Dog owner Kabelo Kgwadi said SPCA officials vaccinated his dog for opportunistic diseases. He added that dog-owners were also encouraged to bring their dogs for treatment on a regular basis.

A house was burnt down at Siluma View in Katlehong and a mentally challenged old man was severely burned in the process.It is alleged that the fire victim was staying alone in the house and that the cause of the fire is unknown. According to Katlehong Police spokesperson Captain Mega Ndobe, the home-based care workers who usually visit the old man to assist him were the ones who first discovered that the house was on fire. He said they called emergency services

personnel to extinguish the fire. Emergency officials discovered the old man inside the burnt house with third-degree burns on his buttocks and transported him to the hospital for treatment. In a related incident, another house was also burned down in Vosloorus and it was discovered that a 57-year-old woman had died. The cause of the fire is still unknown and police are still investigating.

Ukhanyiso Primary School pupils who took part in the Ke Moja No Thanks I’m Fine Without Drugs eight-module programme were recently awarded with certificates for completing the course. The programme, which was sponsored by the Department of Social Development, targeted Grade 4, 5 and 6 pupils, clinics and churches around Kathorus. It was facilitated by representatives from Tsohang Youth Project Pupils, who taught about drugs and their consequences, and how to live a healthy lifestyle.Isaac Mavuso, chairperson of Tsohang Youth Project said, “We were educating the learners about different types of drugs and their side-effects. Learners were taught about healthy

lifestyles and confidence building so that they would not be subjected to peer pressure, as it is one of the causes of drug abuse.”He added that the programme was interesting, with many educational activities, such as singing and playing games related to fighting drug abuse.Matome Makgalo, the principal of Ukhanyiso Primary School, said, “The programme effectively prepares the learners for high school, where the challenge of drug abuse is at its peak. The programme prepares the youngsters about the dangers of drugs and how to behave when they reach high school.”Angel Mkhambela, a Grade 6 pupil who is a beneficiary of the programme, said it was fruitful because it prepares the youth to be responsible, to refrain from drugs and to abstain from sexual intercourse.

Three suspects arrested for unlawful possessionWhen Katlehong Station Commander Brigadier George Manganye joined his relief commander on Tuesday morning to patrol the Katlehong area, they made three arrests. It is alleged that while driving along Sontonga Road, they saw a man who looked suspicious to them. After searching the man, the 25-year-old was found in possession of a home-made jungle knife, and was arrested for unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon. The stop-and-search continued, and at about 60 metres away from the first suspect, a 20-year-old man was also searched and found to be in possession of a plastic packet containing nyaope. He was arrested for unlawful possession of nyaope.On their way to detain the two arrested suspects, they saw a 40-year-old man carrying a bag which looked suspicious to

them, so they stopped him and asked to search him. Police officers then discovered that the bag contained a copper cable. The suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of copper cable of about three metres long. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in Palm Ridge Court soon, to face their various charges.

51 suspects arrested in KatlehongKatlehong cluster police officers arrested 51 suspects from 10-12 October for various offences.The suspects were arrested around Katlehong cluster areas which includes the following police stations: Dawn Park, Vosloorus, Zonkizizwe, Eden Park, Thokoza, Katlehong North and Katlehong. Suspects were arrested during the daily stop- and-search operations which were conducted by crime prevention members and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Officers.

They were arrested for the following offences: malicious damage to property, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, house-breaking and theft, theft, murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of stolen motor vehicle, domestic violence, shoplifting, driving a vehicle under the influence of liquor, possession of drugs including nyaope and dagga.The arrested suspects appeared at Palm Ridge and Voslorus Courts to face their various char ges.

LFAs prepare for electionsThe winds of change are blowing within the Local Football Affiliates (LFA) in SAFA Ekurhuleni as the elections for new executive members has been kick-started in all corners of the City of Ekurhuleni. Candidates are rolling up their sleeves in all 14 Safa Ekurhuleni affiliates as preparations are made to replace the old order with a new one. The LFA elections, which run from October to December, started early this month in Ekurhuleni. Some of the LFAs that are contesting elections within Kathorus include Thokoza Local Football Association (TLFA), Vosloorus Local Football Association (VLFA), Eden Park Local Football Association (ELFA), Zonkizizwe Local Football Association and other LFAs in Ekurhuleni. Safa Ekurhuleni Executive member Buti Mofokeng said the prerequisite for LFAs to contest the election include compliance - contesting LFAs must have legitimate bank accounts and up-to-date annual reports. He said chairman’s reports, organizational reports and treasurer’s reports are also a necessity. “SAFA Ekurhuleni will pay visits to all the affiliating LFAs starting from this month until November. The objectives of the visits are to help the LFAs in making sure they meet the requirements to contest the elections. We also want to give them election guidelines and workshop them about the SAFA nomination process. After we complete the workshop and visiting process, the respective LFAs will commence with their respective elections,” said Mofokeng. Ekurhuleni Netball Festival lives up to its reputation

The Kathorus, Kwatsaduza, Greater Benoni, Boksburg and Tembisa sub-regional netball under-16 and under-19 teams recently battled it out for the ultimate netball crown at the Tsakane Stadium. The event is the brainchild of the Gauteng Department of Sport in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Netball Association, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council and the Ekurhuleni Sports Council. It is an annual event which is bearing results, as every year talented athletes are unearthed. The games ran from 9:00 am to 4:00pm in cool, favourable weather. Teams which took part in the u/16 competition were the Kathorus A and B teams, the Kwatsaduza A and B teams, the Greater Benoni A and B teams, one Tembisa team and one Boksburg team.The teams battled it out in two pools, with each pool having four teams. The two top performing teams in each pool emerged victorious and proceeded to the semi-finals. The finals took place between Kathorus B and Kwatsaduza B, with Kwatsaduza winning 5 - 3. Boitumelo Rampou was voted as the player of the festival for the under-16s

from Greater Benoni. The nine best players were also selected, and will be assisted next year to form part of the high performance centre in Gauteng.Teams that contested in the u/19 category were Kathorus, Kwatsaduza, Greater Benoni, Tembisa, and Boksburg. They played in one stream and the top two emerged to play the final, which was between Kathorus and Tembisa. Kathorus won 5 - 4. Semakaleng Masola from Tembisa was chosen as the u/19 player of the festival. Eight players were also selected to be assisted in 2015 to be part of the high performance centre in Gauteng.All the finalists in both divisions (u/16 and u/19) were given prizes including trophies, kit, medals and other goodies.
