Editor’s Note

This is a week of a many firsts, so you can imagine my struggle with a topic to address. Thuli’s leaked Nkandla report, the commencement of e-toll, 16 days of activism against violence perpetrated against women and children, the Patriotic Alliance is a week old, Eskom CEO Brian Dames resigned, and lastly news of the passing of a world icon. As this is the last time we will interact this year on this platform, I’ve decided to touch on the one issue which touches us all (or at least should)

- the law. This week I’ve chosen to premise our discussion on the following quotes by Martin Luther King Jr:“One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”“An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.”In a democratic situation, the vote is power, the vote gives power and power makes laws. The one thing many voters never consider is that your vote in reality means you agree with decisions of the party or the individual you choose to delegate your power to. Delegating your power to this party or individual means

you agree with their current and future decisions (assuming the voter has spent some time with the policies of the group they choose to empower, otherwise the voter is an irresponsible voter), and lastly it means you believe that the next person will not be harmed by the decisions and laws instituted by the choice you make. The law currently is under immense pressure, being challenged by resistant citizens. History has many examples of civil disobediences that have led to the will of the people forcing governments to listen. Some examples would include the demonstrations that followed Rosa Parks, standing for what she believed was unjust by refusing to stand; and the non-co-operation through civil solidarity which saw the Berlin wall brought down and Germany united. The greatest and most relevant example of

falling in order to stand is the life of our late statesman; Nelson Mandela submitted himself to the punishment which came with defying an unjust law (see insert on the life and times of Madiba). Martin Luther makes a valid point with the first quote. However, dear citizen, it does not end with the disobedience to the law. There are consequences, and those are made clear by Luther’s second quote. One who chooses civil disobedience chooses to disobey power and should be prepared to face the repercussions of their actions, whatever they may be. His second statement actually implies that if you are not ready to fall, rather don’t stand at all. Let’s chat, send me your views via e-mail at [email protected] or tweet @tametimes or @nietovoice. Have a wonderful holiday and let’s meet again in 2014.

Response FRoM LAsT WeeKHi nieto:I felt exactly the same as our fellow Christians.

I always thought that because Jesus defeated the world and death, why fight non-believers on His behalf. But a while back I learnt that we

must defend the Gospel of Christ and not be ashamed of it. With regard to prayer rooms; we and not a building or room are the church.

We can talk to Him anywhere, so let’s pray for our fellow brothers and sisters.shalom, Joan Hartnick

Benoni is still rocked by the loss that occurred late October in Benoni.

Life will never be the same for many as we all remember the loss of father Dewalt Visser Senior and his son Dewalt Visser Junior, who was also known as Poena, when they were both fatally shot at Poena’s girlfriend’s home in Ebotse Golf Estate in Rynfield, Benoni. Poena, who matriculated from Hoërskool Brandweg, was allegedly banned from seeing his former girlfriend, Chevonne Liebenberg, by her father, Retief Liebenberg. In disobeying her father’s wishes, Poena and his father were caught up in events that would lead to their death.Events apparently unfurled as follows:Poena and Chevonne had been banned from seeing one another by Chevonne’s father, Retief Liebenberg.

However, the couple claimed to be in love and saw one another on the sly. It is alleged that prior to the fatal incident the couple had partied together and had had an argument leading to

Poena going to see Chevonne at her home in the Ebotse Golf Estate the next day. Retief Liebenberg had returned home whilst the couple were reconciling. The court heard that Poena had called his father, Dewalt Visser, as Liebenberg was keeping him ‘hostage’ in his home. Dewalt had rushed to the scene to help Poena when Liebenberg apparently shot him five times in the chest and side, after which Liebenberg chased after Poena. He followed Poena into the kitchen, where he too faced four gun shots. Both men were declared dead at the scene. Liebenberg alleges that the deceased had beat him up prior to him protecting himself. Liebenberg reported the following injuries: open wound on his inner lip, a loose front tooth, left side of his jaw was sore (resulted in him not being able to eat), sore and sensitive collar bone, left side of his chest and head sore, neck and back harmed.A private investigator, Danie Day, was hired to detect whether Liebenberg acted in self-defence.

SAPA Report:

According to SAPA, Liebenberg has been receiving preferential treatment since his arrest and before his recent bail hearing, where he got bail for R50 000. Magistrate Ian Cox shared, “Liebenberg is receiving preferential treatment and I will not stand for it.” Liebenberg was being held at Benoni Police Station’s holding cell. Liebenberg’s bail conditions are that he is to report to the charge office every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and that he cannot apply for a new passport (his current one is expired).

Chevonne Liebenberg was sedated in a Benoni hospital for shock after the incident, as she was present when her boyfriend and boyfriend’s father was shot. Chevonne’s mom, Lizelle Carter said that Chevonne had been admitted to hospital and that Chevonne’s brother, Sheldon Liebenberg, was to follow. Poena and his father were buried at the Family Christian Church in Benoni in the first week of November.

Speculation surrounding Visser deaths

RIP

Hearts are aching, the world is mourning and Nelson Mandela is no longer with us. It seems unreal to say that Nelson Mandela is really no longer with us. I was asked last week what my favourite memory was about Mandela or my favourite thing that he did for South Africa. I couldn’t answer right away, I didn’t know what to say because, well, how was I meant to choose just one thing? I did eventually pick something - I could go to school with my best friends, and it wouldn’t matter that they were black. I wouldn’t get judged for thinking differently and I could celebrate the freedom of everyone. Thank you Madiba, my only regret is that I didn’t get to meet you. The past week has been one of great sadness with Mandela, Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala, and on a personal level I, unexpectedly, lost a truly great friend. (As featured in my Editors picture) My heart goes to all families involved, in all deaths, on every level. Remember that the ones you love are in a much better place, dancing with the angels and looking down at us smiling. So in ending off this last edition for 2013, my prayers for

all of you is safety and wisdom. Wisdom to make the right choices and treasure one another. Life is so short. As for the many underprivileged children and charities in general getting gifts this year - it is only when you see those that have so few that you can begin to understand the meaning of Christmas. It is only when we give that we truly receive. I hope you all have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. Till next year, goodbye!

The recent floods on the corner of Viewpoint and Trichardt Roads, Boksburg by the new Trichardt Bridge is gradually causing more and more harm. This has always been a bad area for flooding since the plot lands where changed to concrete stands. This particular plot is on the corner and is the lowest point along the highway. The photos taken on two consecutive days show the flooding. According to residents, the flooding is due to the complete lack of maintenance over many years. The residents are at their wits end after nearly 20 years of running their small businesses from this plot, some who rent out their empty workshops. The floods running through these workshops are detrimental to their businesses. An appeal was raised on behalf of the community: To whom it may concern. Please could you arrange for the correct officials to meet with these residents as per the request below? I have had a number of other residents right along Viewpoint Road complain about flooding. Amongst the issues raised is that the storm water Kerb inlets are poorly maintained and that there is a lot of rubbish in the storm water drains. It is also the lowest point on that side of the highway, and with there being similar problems on the other side of the N12 flooding occurs frequently. In addition to addressing these residents’ problems, please could the storm water drains be cleaned and the kerb inlets maintained on a regular on-going basis? Could you also advise whether the Trichardt Road storm water project will alleviate the

problems and when will this project start?A few days later, a resident wrote:A very nice man came round Monday morning and had a good look at the situation and damages. My husband showed him around, he said that he could see the problem and it is a big problem. Apparently his hands are tied and we can’t have much hope in anything being sorted out within two years due to consultants, subcontractors and everyone that has to be involved and employed, plus there is no money to do the storm water drains in Boksburg.Another resident said:I want action from somebody in authority. To make matters worse, twice in the last two months cars crashed through my wall on the corner. My insurance company has refused to pay out for any damage claims for the last five years. I have spent a fortune on my property to try and stop it being flooded. Unless the Council is prepared to sort out the problem I will have no option but to seek legal recourse and approach the media. The situation will be to the detriment of the Council. I wait in anticipation that the problem can be sorted out, hopefully before I die of old age.

By Jacqui Jurisch The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan police blocked off a section of the N17 and Rietfontein Road on Wednesday, 3 December, as part of their annual festive law enforcement campaign in and around the city of Ekurhuleni.“We want to make the drivers aware and have them comply with the rules of the road; we are distributing these pamphlets to make the public aware of the safety measures we are implementing,” MMC Mthuthuzeli of the EMPD said. The dedicated men and women of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police stopped vehicles to check whether they were roadworthy or not, and handed out their

roadworthy pamphlets. “The state of some of the vehicles and drivers are not up to standard and we will have a zero tolerance policy during the festive season,” Mthuthuzeli added. The chief of police, Hlula Msimang added that the Metropolitan Police are determined to get everyone driving safer. “We can’t achieve this unless all the citizens comply.” Msimang added that there are too many cars on the road and they are starting a campaign to get the citizens of Ekurhuleni to use public transport. MMC Mthuthuzeli added, “We want all road users to be responsible during the festive season and wish all citizens of the City of Ekurhuleni a merry Christmas.”

Last week Boksburg North officers did their routine patrols along Atlas Road, Anderbolt, when they saw a White KIA 1-tonner bakkie carrying steel. They stopped the vehicle and noticed that it had a lot of burnt copper on.They asked for receipts and proof of where they bought it, but the two occupants of the vehicle failed to do so. They were arrested by the two constables and brought to Boksburg North Police Station. The copper weighed 446 kilogram, and the value is about R23 000. Well done to Constable Mathlagane and Sibeko for their dedication.

The main stage filled with sound engineers as they tested the instruments for Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, while the girls in the front row were screaming their lungs out as they awaited the international act. Cameras were flashing and the crowd was clapping as the band made their way onto the stage. There were girls crying and reaching out for Ronnie Winter, the lead singer’s hands. This was The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’s ten year anniversary performance, also their debut show in South Africa.

Hoe wil ek hê mense moet my onthou? Nie almal kan ‘n Madiba-legende wees nie. Wanneer ek nou stil raak en dink, hoop ek mense sal my onthou as ‘n vrou van wysheid.

May Peace, Joy, Hope and Happiness be yours during this Holiday Season and throughout

the New year.

Amy-Mae CampbellNickelback fans raced to the Coca-Cola Dome this past weekend to see Nickelback perform live for the first time in South Africa. The band had two concerts in Johannesburg, on Friday 6 December and Saturday 8 December. The long-awaited concerts formed part of their international tour titled The Hits, and both the band and the audience did not leave disappointed. The moment the lights dimmed and the first silhouettes of the band members were visible on stage, the crowd went wild with excitement and anticipation. This energetic performance was heightened with their grunge-rock single Woke up this Morning, and after everyone was properly sweating and panting for breath, the band toned down the instruments a bit and took a trip down memory lane with Photograph. In between songs the band would show off their musical talent with awesome drum and guitar solos. Even though they were performing hits, the presentation was fresh and exciting because of the unexpected solos and instrumental parts they weaved in

between the songs. Overall the fans were impressed by how good the band sounded live, they said that the vocals were incredible and that lead singer Chad Kroeger’s voice sounded just like it does on radio and CD. Chad was very charismatic throughout the show and would frequently make jokes and try to keep spirits high. Even though everyone was thrilled about the show, it was difficult to ignore the underlying grim atmosphere - the concert took place on the same Friday that the news officially broke of former President Mandela’s passing. Nickelback also paid tribute to Madiba and held a minute of silence in the middle of the show, saying “may you rest in peace”. Afterwards everyone passionately sang the South African national anthem together. For many people at the concert this was a definite highlight of the evening.

Vale burns rubber with Mustang Sallytame TIMES has been following Clare Vale in recent months and on Saturday we got to be right on the sidelines with her and her team at the Rock Raceway in the South Africa versus Mozambique Drift-off showdown. Clare Vale and her team from RAM welcomed us to join her pit-side to watch the action from her huge truck, which is known to the team as their home away from home. Her Mustang 2000 model is a definite crowd pleaser with its V8 horse power engine. We got to get to know the drift queen and meet her team behind her success. How long did you have to train to become a drifter? It took quite a while; I came from circuit racing so I had some experience of racing. But drifting is completely different, I had to train for a year to perfect it.What has been your favourite racetrack? The drifting Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone, it suits the car. What is your greatest racing moment? There are two, in East London I placed third overall. It was a huge achievement for me; I raced with champion drivers on one of the fastest circuits. The second one has to be in 2008, there was a street race in Soweto which was

amazing. The crowds were huge and you could see their passion for motorsport. What was your scariest moment? You don’t have time to be scared; if something goes wrong it happens too fast to feel scared because you need to react. But, if I have to think about one time where I actually felt my heart stop a beat was when another racer braked too late and his car drove over mine. I had tyre marks on my helmet. Does the car feel different with a passenger? We don’t race with passengers, but I have a passenger in the car with me when I practice. There is a definite difference in any race car.How often do you have to change your tyres?Luckily the front tyres don’t have to be changed that often, but the back tires have to be changed after ever run. Roughly three to four times.Clare Vale is a passionate drift racer, she is however not the only female racer. There are two other local ladies that race. Vale has definitely been an inspiration to women around the world and inspires them to believe in themselves and motivate them to race, putting the stereotypes to rest. For race dates and events visit www.clarevale.com, or follow her on Facebook.

Sporting fraternity honours Mandela

World football body FIFA together with local and international sports officials and

personalities have continued to pay tribute to former South African

president Nelson Mandela who passed away on 5

December. Mandela, who is going to be laid to rest on Sunday at his home village of Qunu, was well known for his love of sports and was an amateur boxer during

his heyday. On hearing of the news of Mandela’s passing, FIFA ordered flags to be

flown at half mast and a minute’s silence to be observed before the next round of international matches.FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who was in Brazil for

draw for the 2014 World Cup, recalled Mandela’s passion for sport. “It is in deep mourning that I pay my respects to an extraordinary person, probably one of the greatest humanists of our time and a dear friend of mine: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela,” Blatter said.“When he was honoured and cheered by the crowd at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium on 11 July 2010, it was as a man of the people, a man of their hearts, and it was one of the most moving moments I have ever experienced.”Mandela’s last major appearance on the global stage was at the 2010 World Cup finals, the first to be hosted on African soil, when he attended the final in Soweto to a thunderous ovation from the 90 000-strong crowd.“Nelson Mandela will stay in our hearts forever. The memories of his remarkable fight against oppression, his incredible charisma and his positive values will live on in us and with us,” said BlatterSouth African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan added his voice to the global chorus of condolences to Mandela’s family.“The association, on behalf of the football community in the country, wants to send its most heartfelt condolences to the family of Madiba.“The football community will fondly remember

everything that is good about this proud hero of our struggle against everything that divided this nation,” he said.In paying tribute to the 95-year-old former statesman, Jordaan said Madiba was responsible for lifting the spirits of the football nation - from the talks to unite the association, to victory at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to Jordaan, Madiba was the catalyst in South Africa’s bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.“While we had been watching Madiba’s deteriorating health over the last year, we are all still shocked by his passing, which will always remain untimely as our nation still has much to achieve.“However, his encouragement to our players on the field of play will forever be etched in our collective memories.“We call on the entire football community of our nation to observe a moment of silence before every match they play in honour of this hero, who inspired our nation to achieve in our sport and to work to emulate his example,” he said.PSL Chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza said Mandela was a key inspirational force, “Madiba carried a vision guided by an inner voice to deliver our nation from a divisive and self-destructive course of history. “He will live forever be a motivating force for those that seek and strive for peace and human dignity.“Ours is a special generation that saw Madiba in action. I am personally gratified and particularly privileged to have known this good man, an agent of change, a bearer of hope, and a representation of all that is good in humanity.”

WISHING OUR CLIENTS A HAPPY, SAFE, FUN FISHING HOLIDAY

SAGA dedicates SA Junior IPT to MandelaThe South African Golf Association (SAGA) dedicated the South African Junior Inter-Provincial Championship to the memory of the country’s founding president, Nelson Mandela. The championship started on 9 December.SAGA president Andre Pieterse paid tribute to the former president, who passed away at his Houghton home on Thursday evening at the age of 95. “On behalf of amateur golfers in South Africa,

we pass along our sincere condolences to the family of Madiba. Although we have been preparing ourselves, his passing still came as a great shock and SAGA joins people all over world in remembering this icon of our times.” Pieterse said.“Mandela believed that sport could do more to unite a nation than politics could, and everyone in the sporting industry respected him for his relentless efforts to unite the sporting codes in South Africa in order to

create a united and proud nation. Who will ever forget the site of our former president wearing the number six Springbok shirt at the final match of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and hoisting the trophy with Francois Pienaar after South Africa beat New Zealand? Madiba believed that sport should be employed to provide the foundations for a healthy future for all the youth. That is why we reminded our junior golfers that sport is a great force for unity, and we wished to honour Madiba’s

legacy by dedicating our South African Junior Inter-Provincial Championship to the memory of a man who dedicated his life to bring about peace and equality for everyone in this nation.” He added. The SA Junior IPT teed off at Bellville Golf Club on Monday, 9 December, and saw 13 provincial teams from across the country compete in two divisions for the coveted A-Division title and B-Division promotion.
