Tip: Goedkoop koop is duur koop. Doen jou huiswerk voor jy spandeer.Nog ‘n tip: Moenie wag vir ‘n geleentheid nie; nooi sommer vandag nog jou geliefdes oor vir ‘n koppie koffie.

ALBERTON HISTORY

HISTORICAL VIEW:CHURCHES IN ALBERTONIn 1975 Pastor Fred Toerien was replaced by Pastor Athol Emmett. In 1975 Alberton and Brackenhurst Methodist congregations were part of the Germiston Circuit. The Rev. HV Miller became the new Circuit Superintendent for Germiston in 1976. A request was made for money to purchase a third stand to be used for parking when the new Hall was built. The Hall would cost R80 000. They, however, also offered an alternative: “a prefab with brick façade would cost R25 000.” In April 1976 it was agreed that Brackenhurst could buy the third stand opening up the way for a Hall to be build. “After our Planned Giving Campaign we raised enough to pay for two stands at Brackenhurst in 1974/5.”It was resolved that Brackenhurst would be established as a new and separate Society and that Alberton complete the payment for the two stands already purchased. In 1976 Alberton and Brackenhurst had a combined membership of about 1 000 families. Alberton had about 850 families that left Brackenhurst with about 150 families.Later on in the letter: regarding the work in Brackenhurst in1976, Pastor Emmett wrote: “Most people are busy establishing homes, gardens, etc., and some still try to retain links with their churches in Johannesburg. Most new families that are

being picked up are through Baptisms and a few through Sunday School, (now 170 children on the roll) and problem counselling.”The 1977 Conference of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa acknowledged Brackenhurst as a Society within the Germiston Circuit and agreed to place a senior (unmarried) experienced Probationer at Brackenhurst. That man turned out to be (Reverend) David Hart. The hall was completed in 1977 with the first service held on 23 October 1977. The dedication and generosity of the Alberton and Brackenhurst members had once more been shown. The fact that Brackenhurst was up-and-running as a Society virtually within five years of starting underlies this fact. For any information on the Alberton Heritage Society, please call (011) 869-9417 (Beverley-Ann Small) or Daan Grobler (083 380 4072). We all have songs that get stuck in our minds now and then. It usually only lasts for a few hours, but in some cases it can last for days, driving you insane for the time-being. I get that with certain phrases. It could be the most insignificant, short sentence, but when it’s stuck, I will repeat it in my mind for hours. Now, imagine getting a song stuck, but you don’t know all the words, so you make up your own. Or you repeat what you think the artist is singing, or even worse, you collaborate two songs that sound similar and have that stuck in your mind for days. This is the problem with incomplete information. Someone hears a story and passes it on. A question gets added coupled with an answer that goes a little like this: ‘’I think… / it’s possible that… / I wouldn’t be surprised if…’’ - and this is how an incomplete story turns into something stuck in your mind. That is why it is so important to listen to one another. There is a major difference between hearing what someone is saying, and really listening to what they have to say. And when you’re unsure, ask if you understood correctly. Because the only thing worse than having a song stuck in your mind, is singing that song out load with the wrong lyrics.

It is absolutely normal to feel nervous and not ‘good enough’ before the time because creative people are extremely critical of themselves. Therefore they need as much encouragement appreciation and applause as one can give them. Even though the weather did not play well, everything else did. Parents and friends, as well as visitors to the restaurant attended the exhibition some of the artworks

were sold. This always encourages artists to create even more afterwards and that their hard work is rewarded. The atmosphere and social buzz with art and music together with being in such a colourful and creative environment made the day very entertaining and successful. Not to mention the warm and friendly host and owner of the restaurant –Hettie - who made everyone feel very welcome.

Shalom Readers. The battle is not yours but the Lords

Kaalvoet PRIESTER

As we read 2 Chronicles 20:15: “ He said: Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem, this is what the Lord says to you: “do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours,

but God’s...”Anyone going through battle, trials, tribulation in the family, at work, in business, life in general, know that the battle is not yours but God’s. It may look like you will never recover, or you will die in things which are happening in your life but know that God is aware and he will fight for you. You will come out well and alive.Listen, the job of the devil is to get you surrender and give up in life. You have crying all night along because you have been trying hard but no success. Now hold on God, let him take over your battle, he will crush the devil. God never loses the battle. I pray that God will fight on your behalf in Jesus name. Any enemy messing up with you will suffer disgrace in Jesus name. Send us your prayers requests via SMS or WhatsApp on 071 798 2273.

SA INSTITUTE OF HOMECRAFTS

We welcome our pets into our homes with the intention of caring for them and sharing a wonderful bond. However, without knowing it, we could be inviting them into a danger zone if we do not educate ourselves on the numerous items that pose a poison risk to them. Inside and out, wherever you turn, you’re likely to find items that are potentially lethal to our pets. Here’s the PFI’s (Pet Food Industry of Southern Africa) top 8 items to be particularly cautious with:

Human foodsJust because foods sit well with us, does not automatically

make them safe for your pet. Foods that should never be given to your pets include chocolate, coffee & caffeine, grapes & raisins, onions, garlic, leeks, & chives, alcohol, xylitol, various fruit & vegetable pits and foods that are unfit for human consumption.

Human medicationBoth prescription and over-the-counter medication pose a risk,

including herbal and natural variations. Always keep your medicine cupboard well out of reach of pets and safely secured.

Veterinary medicationThe same goes for medication that’s been specifically

prescribed to your pet. Medication should never be administered without veterinary guidance and should only be given in accordance with the dosage and duration indicated by your vet, for the original ailment to the pet being treated.

Gardening productsEspecially herbicides, garden pesticides and fungicides. Store

these out of reach of pets and ensure they are safe for pets, if being used in the spaces your pets occupy. Protect pets from these products when in use should the product warn against contact.

Cleaning productsMany of the products that we use to clean our home should

never be ingested by us or our pets. Use within the home is generally safe, provided the product instructions are followed but storage should be inaccessible.

Poisonous plantsPlants have varying toxicity levels. Educate yourself on

which are most toxic and steer clear of planting these outdoors or keeping them indoors. Take note of alien or poisonous plants that may find their way into your garden without your knowledge.

Household & maintenance itemsContaining numerous chemicals,

various household and maintenance items are potentially hazardous, such as fire lighters and paints. Store and use with care.

Pest control itemsPoisons used to control insects and rodents are potentially lethal

to our pets. These items should be kept well away from pets and should be used and stored according to the instructions only.

The Alberton SPCA recently held a hugely successful Outreach Day in Thokoza. Not only did we help over 150 dogs and a few cats, we also gave 100 rabies vaccinations. The community of Thokoza really supported this and were very grateful for the help given to them. A big thank you goes to all those volunteers who gave up their time to support on the day. The Committee and Staff would also like to say a big thank you to Rocky Peak Spur in Brackenhurst for their donations as well as joining us on the day, Rawsons, Glenvista and Checkers in

Vermooten Street, Brackenhurst for their donations. Finally we wish to thank our incredible Alberton community for all their donations and support. We will definitely be hosting another outreach before the end of the year, as there are so many animals that need our help. Together we can do so much more to help those who cannot speak for themselves.

Please note we are now collecting for our next outreach project so again welcome donations of food, leads, collars, bowls, etc. Together we can make a difference.

ASPIRING MODELSLethabo through to Gauteng trials

Annual Grade 11 Mass

The much anticipated semi-finals for the International Model of the Year Competition took place at Mall at Newmarket in Alberton on Saturday 21 May.Figures Models Alberton entered 37 of their students into the semi-finals with a number of seven young men participating. The contestants’ ages ranged from 12 to 23 and a standardized outfit of a black Figures branded top and either black shorts / shirt or pants were worn to minimize distractions from the models themselves.

The turnout and support was

phenomenal with much cheering happening throughout the show. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sash sponsors for their generosity, Debbie Nebbeling and her team at Paul James Hairdressers at the Mall for sponsoring all the models hairstyles, Izelle Lemue, Joanna De Bruyn and the Mall for their support and patronage. Last but not least – a huge shout out to all the students who participated in the show – without you, the show would not have gone on so thank you! The Alberton Finalists will be competing

against all the other finalists from the national Figures branches 4 June at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre for the grand prize – one lucky winner takes all – an all-expenses paid trip to the IMTA in New York in July this year.

The Mall at Newmarket have generously extended their patronage by offering to host the

IMTA Talent Search 29 October for any aspiring models, actors, singers and dancers. For more information, please contact Melanie on 083 446 9442.

Lethabo Sehlapelo, an under 12 netball player from General Alberts Primary, went through to the Gauteng trials and made it to one of the Gauteng teams. The tournament will be during the June school holidays.

The annual Gr 11 mass was held on 19 May at Christ the King Cathedral in Johannesburg. St Catherine’s was privileged to have had mass celebrated by the Bishop. After mass we joined together in praise & worship. Thanks to the Gr 11 leaners and parents for the generous food and toiletries that were donated.

I trust this little article will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart as we remember the birthday anniversary of the great entertainer and comedian, Bob Hope who came into this world on 29 May 1903.Having appeared in over 70 films and authored 14 books, Hope was praised for his comedy timing, funny one-liners, rapid-fire de-livery of jokes and his self-dep-recating sense of humour. The song Thanks for the Memory is widely regarded as his signa-ture tune. I had forgotten he had lived to the ripe old age of 100 and also didn’t real-ise it’s been over 13 years since his death on 27 July 2003.

I always enjoyed his jokes, his shows and the seven famous Road movies he made

with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. On his deathbed, they asked him

where he wanted to be buried. His answer was, “Surprise me!”Here we pay tribute to a man who lived a long life with a career spanning nearly 80 years, who loved the game

of golf and who made us laugh and really did make a difference.

For those of you too young to re-member him, ask your grandparents.

BOB HOPE – THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

● On turning 70 – “I still chase women, but only downhill.”● On turning 80 – “That’s the time of your life when even your birthday suits needs pressing.”● On turning 90 – “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.”● On turning 100 – “I don’t feel old. In fact, I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap.”● On giving up his early boxing career – “I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them.”● On never winning an Oscar, despite being the host 19 times – “Welcome to the Academy Awards, or, as it’s called in my home, Passover.”● On golf – “Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.”● On presidents – “I have performed for 12 presidents, but entertained only six.”● On why he chose showbiz for his career – “When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, congratulations you have an eight pound ham.”

● On receiving the Congressional Gold Medal – “I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.”● On his family’s early poverty – “Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother would throw on another brother.”● On his early failures – “I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn’t for the stuff the audience threw at me.”● On his six brothers – “That’s how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.”● On going to heaven – “I’ve done benefits for all religions. I’d hate to blow the here after on a techni- cality.”

HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY OBSERVATIONS AND QUIPS HE MADE DURING HIS LIFETIME:

SPORTS NEWSSTAR SHINES HER TRUE COLOURSGermiston resident Tatijana Ignjatov (10) has shone brightly as a dance champion since she was just six years old. But despite her success, she remains uncomplicated and down-to-earth, enjoying her school work at Bishop Bavin School in Bedfordview, and reading books and drumming when she is out of her dance regalia of tutus and tights.Countless trophies, cups and medals have been collected by Tatijana in her years on the stage, a testament to her talent and to the hours of discipline and hard work she has put into her passion. She dances four to five hours a day, six days a week and told the tame TIMES she prefers fruit to chocolates and sweets. She recently won in the National Eisteddfod’s Foundation Phase 2016 category. The competition started in March, when Tatijana competed against 1 345 other entries. These were then whittled down to 76 semi-finalists and eventually 20 finalists, on 21 May, the remaining 20 finalists contended for the crown. Tatijana was chosen as the winner.Tatijana trains in various dance disciplines, among them modern, jazz, ballet, show dance, horton, and acrobatics but has not let her success blind her to what is really important in life. She said her education was as important to her as dancing and that one day she would love to study Movement in Dance.Despite her beauty and success on stage,

she remains humble: “I was born to be real not perfect”, is her life’s motto.Still, it would seem her achievements are pretty close to perfect: Among these are a number 1 ranking in modern, jazz and show dance for IDO (International Dance Organisation) in South Africa, a number 2 ranking in ballet in 2015 for IDO in South Africa, first place at the World Dance Masters in Croatia, overall junior winner in the SA School Championships and winner of the Dance World Cup in Romania in 2015. She also featured in Strictly come dancing season 6 finals 2013. The list of her achievements goes on…Mom Nina explained her daughter was an extremely dedicated individual in everything she did. “She just does things with a passion, be that dance, drums or school work.” She said she believed her daughter’s heart was the secret behind her success. “At the level that Tatijana is competing in, every child is gifted and talented but not all show genuine emotion and passion during their performances like Tatijana. This shines through during her dancing and draws many into her performance. Seeing her love dancing and enjoying every minute on stage makes us happy as parents.”The National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) is a registered non-profit company that kindles youth development through participation in the performing arts. Since 1997, close to 400 000 young people have been involved in the various activities of the NEA.
