tameTiMEsBlind gogo’s plea not to be evicted
Fifty-nine-year-old Kleinjie Maria plaatjie has been given eviction orders by the palm ridge Magistrate’s Court instructing her to vacate the house in Zonkizizwe that she has been occupying for the past 15 years.
According to Plaatjie, she bought the house with her late husband for R8000 from Stuurman Tsotetsi in 1999 and moved to Free State province. “When I went to register for the title deed, I discovered that I shared the house with someone else (Masupha Patrick Constant Makotoko). Makotoko approached me in 2001, claiming that he bought the house from the developer for R800. The matter was reported to the Housing Department and we were attending adjudications. We reached a time when Makotoko was not attending the adjudications processes any more. In May this year l received court orders to attend court regarding the house matter.”She added that she has been attending court cases with Makotoko, who is the complainant and now they have given her eviction orders. Plaatjie said she has been ordered to vacate the property by 6 September and that if she fails to do so, the Sheriff of the Court will be
authorised to evict her by 13 September. “I am blind and suffering from diabetes, arthritis, dementia and high blood pressure. I want assistance not to be removed from the house. I am staying with my three children, of whom one is mentally challenged, and all are unemployed. If they remove me from here, l will be destitute,” said Plaatjie. Whitey Ngwenya, a member of South African Civic Organisation (SANCO) Kathorus branch said, “The complainant never occupied the house. We are making a plea for Gogo to remain in the house as she has been residing there for many years.” “We are also appealing to government,” he said, “to find an amicable solution, maybe offering the complainant an alternative. We have a big challenge of housing in Zonkizizwe, of people who are holding title deeds while not residing in the houses.” Ward councillor Kenneth Teboho Letsoha said, “The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is also a respondent in the court order issued by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court and we have taken the matter to the MEC of Housing. There are many cases like this in Zonkizizwe and if this eviction proceeds, we could eventually have half of Zonkizizwe evicted. We have a lot of title deeds that are unclaimed in the office and many people occupying the houses don’t own any title deed.”

Why demolish the old Natalspruit Hospital?Tshidi Hlahane, a concerned resident, writes:
The MEC and other leaders should really reconsider demolishing the Natalspruit Hospital based on the following:1. Which stakeholders were consulted about the demolition and on what basis did they agree to the decision to demolish the Natalspruit Hospital?2. Is there any form of transport arrangement for the unemployed families of sick patients so that they can travel to see them at the new hospital?3. There are many home-based care organisations that operate under unhealthy, if not poor, environments. Could the old building not be used by such organisations?

For two months now, residents of stand numbers 158 to 9 in Kwanele South have been living in an extremely unhealthy environment, with sewage flowing in their yards and down the street next to their houses.Speaking to tame TIMES, Maria Motaung, a resident of stand number 158 said, “When they were constructing the road next to my house, I think they tampered with the drainage system and the sewage blockage started. We have being reporting the matter to the relevant department, and they came four times but they did not do anything to assist us and stop the problem. My yard is full of waste from the drainage, but I am running a spaza shop and I cannot operate in such an unhealthy area. We are appealing for
assistance with immediate effect, because otherwise this will result in us contracting diseases.”Mercy Melemane, a resident at stand number 159 said, “It is two months now and we are still faced with this problem. My children cannot play outside because it is unhygienic. It has also affected the toilet system - we are unable to flush the waste and when bathing, the water does not move to the drainage system. My house smells of waste. We need assistance.”Regarding the matter, ward councillor Tebogo Maama said, “I am aware of the situation and have reported it to the relevant department. I will also check with the department to find out why it has not been resolved.”

In a bid to uplift sports development from grassroots level, General Cable has donated sports attire and equipment to Alafang Secondary School in Katlehong. They donated sports kits worth about R70 000 for four divisions in soccer and three divisions in netball and athletics, including balls and soccer boots. General Cable representatives also served the learners with a light lunch during the donation handover.Learners were overwhelmed with the donations and some say that they cannot wait for their next match to show off their new sports attire. Speaking to tame TIMES, Kgomotso Zele, educator and coordinator of the school projects, said, “We have a good
relationship with General Cable - they helped us with equipment for the feeding scheme and they have been supporting us. We are very grateful for the donation of sports attire and equipment. We had a challenge of shortages of sports attire, as learners used to have to exchange outfits and soccer boots. These donations will encourage the learners to do better in their sporting activities.Marketing manager of General Cable Cama Rebe said, “We have adopted the school and are supporting them with numerous things as part of our corporate social responsibility. We are motivating the learners to stay focused on sports and be recognised by their sporting attire when they are in the playground.”

New school shoes for 835 pupils
Sekgutlong Primary School pupils were delighted to receive a brand new pair of school shoes from Dimension Data. They donated 853 pairs of shoes with each pupil receiving a pair. Olga Maja, principal of Sekgutlong Primary School said, “Some pupils would come bare-foot, while others wore old sneakers to school. We appreciate the donations, as they will give our pupils confidence.”Sibusiso Buthelezi, BEE General Manager for Dimension Data said, “We have identified a need for school shoes among the learners. Most of them are from impoverished backgrounds and come to school bare-foot and without proper school shoes. This initiative is part of giving back to the community and making a difference to the wellbeing of pupils.”In addition, a former learner and member of staff for Dimension Data, Tshepo Boshielo, said the shoes would boost the self-esteem of learners. He said the pupils would now be able to concentrate in class as they would all be looking the same, with proper school uniforms.

Cathula crowned provincial volleyball champions Cathula Primary School in Katlehong has reclaimed the provincial volleyball championship they lost two years ago in a tournament held at Pretoria University (PU).Speaking to tame TIMES, team coach Zowi Bongelo said they were disappointed to relinquished their title in 2013; hence they made it their mission possible to regain it this year. “Four schools were representing their respective regions in the volleyball provincial finals. Regions which competed for the finals were Vaal region, City of Johannesburg, Tshwane and we were representing Ekurhuleni,” he said. The Ekurhuleni teams played according to a round robin system and Cathula volleyball team demonstrated their intentions to win the tournament from the first whistle. In their first encounter, Ekurhuleni walloped Vaal region 2-1. Their second opponent, City of
Johannesburg, was also thumped 2-1 and their last adversary, Tshwane, was thrashed 2-1 before they were crowned the provincial champions.“We are now working hard at preparing the team to play in the South Africa Top School national finals to be held at the University of Pretoria early in December. Nine teams including ourselves will be competing in the finals. Our team captain Nolithando Nketse won the best player of the tournament award in the provincial championship,” said Bongelo. He said they were impressed with their performance. Bongelo said his team demonstrated hard work and passion every time they took to the field. “Our team’s hard work is hindered by a lack of sporting facilities, but winning the national championship in Pretoria is our ultimate goal,” concluded Bongelo. WINNERS: The newly crowned Gauteng Volleyball Champions have promised to
annex the national championship title.

Honouring the township karate legend The legendary township karate pioneer Peter “Poison” Thage has been honoured with a certificate of recognition for developing township karate as a sport during the height of apartheid. Thage was honoured during the Lea Barnes Memorial Tournament held recently at Thokoza Auditorium. Speaking to tame TIMES, the jubilant Thage said the certificate meant a great deal to him because he was honoured by his former student, Shihan Collen Sedoaba. “The award is an indication that there are people who are watching and appreciating my contribution in developing karate sports in the township and in Gauteng. I am happy to be honoured while still alive because most people are recognised after death. This is the second award I have received in the past few years. In 2012 I was honoured by the Minister of Sports Fikile Mbalula with the Steve Tshwete Life Time Award and now I am being honoured again,” explained Thage. Shihan Collen Sedoaba said Thage is like a father to him. “I joined his dojo which was situated in DH Williams Hall in 1975.
As an orphan, I couldn’t pay my karate training fees but Shihan Thage paid for my lessons from his pocket until I got a black belt. As if that was not enough, he also paid for my registration fee for my Diploma in Teaching. Today I’m a qualified principal at Sejabulile Secondary School. The award is a token of appreciation from the entire Gauteng Kyokushinkan Karate Organisation. He has demonstrated over the years that karate is not just a sport, but a way of life even today.”
RECOGNISED: The legendary Peter “Poison” Thage has been honoured for developing the sport of karate.
