The aim of this national initiative is to reward hard- working nurses for their contribution to quality health care in private hospitals. Assistant nurse Riana Julius from Lakeview Hospital in Benoni is one of the first recipients of this prestigious award. As an excellence award winner, Riana has automatically been entered into a national selection process, where she stands the chance of being selected to complete health training overseas. According to Vuyokazi Mnikathi, Risk Manager at Discovery Health, Discovery distributed surveys about health care services to all its members. In these surveys, patients had to answer questions about their service delivery experiences at their respective hospitals. They also had to suggest, by name, which nurse they felt deserved the excellence award. The hospital staff was also consulted to approve the candidates, and the nurse with the most votes won the award. Through this process, Discovery Health hopes to identify where health care services can be improved, and to ensure that those who need recognition, get it. Mnikathi explained that by rewarding nurses for excellence, they are motivated to continue their good work, and co-workers are challenged to live up to these standards as well. “Our concern is the quality of health care in hospitals. This nurse [Riana Julius] has been working as a nurse for 24 years. Doctors get recognition, but sisters are just as important. We want to make sure that the standard of quality in private hospitals meets the expensive costs,” Mnikathi explained. The Discovery Health Excellence Awards finalists will be selected in August, based on the feedback received from the surveys and hospital staff. The winning nurse will then embark on a learning opportunity of a lifetime: "We do not want our nurses to be exposed to the South African health industry only, but to have a learning experience where they can come back and teach what they have learnt. This will be so good for improving health speciality in the country,” Mnikathi said. Julius received her certificate of recognition and a R4000 cash prize, including other gifts, last week. She was overwhelmed by emotion and cried during the hand-over, which took place at the Lakeview Hospital: “I was so shocked, I didn’t expect it. I feel so good about this opportunity. Thank you,” Julius said. Julius’s co-workers at Lakeview Hospital are all immensely proud of her. Legacy is not what’s left tomorrow when you’re gone. It’s what you give, create, impact and contribute to today while you’re hereAs we welcome Youth month I have forced myself to think about the state of young South

Africa in 2014. Being a young man myself, it is a question which has occupied my headvoices on more than one occasion. June 16 is a very significant holiday on the well-populated South African holiday list; there are a few holidays we can do away with, but June 16 reminds the nation of the dangers which could result from ignoring the youth and for that reason it should remain.Though very significant, I have over recent years observed that as we commemorated the bravery of the class of 76 we often look down on the youth of the day. I know I’m opening myself up to much criticism here, but I do not believe that as youth today we

are not any less burdened than our earlier generations. Is it absolutely necessary to put us down in the effort to elevate the efforts of past generations? Maybe it is, but then I must warn that we as a nation must adjust our expectation because you cannot propel someone to excellence by constantly undermining the value of their contribution. It should be interesting to note that as South Africa we are a young country, not only with reference to our 20 year old democracy, we also (according to census 2011) are a country with an average age of 25. More than a third of our country is made up of youth under the

age of 20. This is not as big a problem as many of earlier generations have made it out to be; in fact I think it is a great opportunity. An opportunity which should be harnessed - war is in-deed old men talking and young men fighting, it is the youth which should be tasked with building the country. That country will not take the form of modern day South Africa, it will be dictated by the youth - now with that in mind it is obvious that it would serve the country better for our elders to positively contribute to the building up of the youth. Lets chat, e-mail me your views on [email protected] or send a tweet to @NietoVoice

BY NIETO HERNANDEZ

BUILD UP THE YOUTH.

BUILD THE FUTURE

So this month in National Youth

Month. I am always very divided when it comes to Youth Day: do I smile and celebrate the freedom and education rights that I have

today? Or do I reflect on the tragic Soweto uprisings, which led to school children, such as Hector Pietersen, being shot and killed? Sometimes It is almost unreal to believe that the reality we as the youth know today could differ so drastically from that of our parents and grandparents. When I think of the division between cultures and people during the 1990s and how we have grown so much in only 20 years of democracy, then I am very proud to say that I am South African. Even though we still experience a lot of political instability and tension regarding employment based on merit or skin colour, it is still amazing to see how our country has been able to forgive and tolerate one another after the violent history that we reflect on today, such as June 16. I often feel embarrassed about the Apartheid regime, but on 6 June this year Europe paid tribute to the World War Two soldiers who lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Yes, we have a violent and unfair history, but South Africa is not the only country in the world that has ever made a wrong decision. As long as we learn from history and not hold it against each other, we can move forward. Have a special Youth Day and Father’s Day, Amy, [email protected], 083 594 8384

By Colleen QvistIndividuals think, feel and behave differently and this combination of characteristics or qualities form an individual’s distinctive personality or character. Differences in people, especially at work, but also at home can lead to problems because people do not work optimally. We spend our time concentrating on the differences and being irritated as opposed to celebrating the differences because we understand them. A group made up of people with different personalities is much stronger than the group that has people who are all the same.

The word personality comes from the Latin word persona and means “mask”. In the ancient Latin-speaking world, masks were worn in theatre to show a person’s character and not to cover it up.

Each personality type has strengths and potential weaknesses. These are summarised in the table below:

There are numerous personality theories and ways of testing personality and this article is not meant to be an in- depth look at theories or tests. Instead it is a way of looking at personalities so that you can recognise and understand the differences and thereby cope better.

As with anything in life, it is always better to start with understanding yourself. What is your personality? Why do you think, feel and behave as you do? When you can recognise personality traits in yourself and understand them, it is easier to widen your observations to other people.

One way of categorising personality is that people can be described as analytical, driver, amiable or expressive. Of course people are unique and so often do not fit squarely into one category and may overlap. You can take a quiz at http://www.retaildoc.com/retailerresources/personality-test to see which one you are. Compare your findings with your friends and colleagues.

Peter Urs Bender’s Guide to Strengths and Weaknesses of Personality Types: recognising the pros and cons of each personality style can help you manage your colleagues and customers better, if you take into account how they would like to be communicated with. You can read more about how to communicate with each personality type at http://www.peterursbender.com/quiz/swtable.html.(Colleen Qvist is an empowerment coach and speaker)

The Boksburg North Communications Service supplied the following information regarding the Stop and Search Procedure: When the police indicates for a vehicle to pull over, it is either because the vehicle appears to be suspicious, or because it could be linked to a crime/ committed a crime. Sometimes the SAPS might pull over a vehicle that fits the description of the one for which they are searching. This is how the procedure should work:• The police may switch on their sirens and lights and will preferably stop behind the suspicious vehicle. • The occupants of the suspicious vehicle may be requested to step out of the vehicle.

If the police request that you step out of the vehicle; by refusing to do so, it will create further suspicion; especially if the occupants are blatantly ignoring the policeman’s instructions. If the occupants appear to be very hesitant

and non-co-operative, the police may remove their firearm (typically a rifle or pistol) and point it towards the ground. This is merely for the safety of the officers and people in the vicinity.• The police may also approach the vehicle with their weapons ready if they feel that their safety is compromised. One officer could approach the car from the left, and the other from the right. This is to cover one-another. • Police will conduct a stop and search procedure after the occupants have exited the car.• Stop and Search Procedures may be initiated by a routine roadblock, or by a police patrol.• When you as a driver is being followed by a police vehicle and you feel unsure or uncomfortable to stop, drive slowly to the nearest police station, or phone 10111 and ask the operator to verify whether the vehicle following you is a legitimate police vehicle.

A man was killed on Tuesday morning (3 June) when his vehicle drove into the back of a large truck at the N12/R24 interchange in Bedfordview. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found a light motor vehicle wedged between two large

trucks. Paramedics discovered the deceased had sustained severe injuries when his vehicle crashed into the back of the first truck. Shortly afterwards, a second truck drove into the back of the light motor vehicle.

Using paraffin safely• Always handle paraffin with extreme care.• Paraffin is poisonous and can burn your skin even if unlit• Paraffin should not be sold in containers contaminated with other chemicals this can cause it to even explode• Paraffin emits harmful fumes when ignited; open a window when using a paraffin appliance • Never leave a paraffin appliance unattended. It only takes a second for a gust of wind or a child to knock over a light or stove• Make sure paraffin appliances are on a flat, firm surface

• Do not put a cloth under a paraffin

appliance. A child or pet could pull the trailing end and the cloth will then burn, fuelling the fire• Water will not extinguish a paraffin fire, it will only spread the flames. Always have a bucket of sand or a fire extinguisher nearby when using a paraffin appliance Safety around an open flame• Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach• Cut candles in half to prevent them falling over – and use a candle holder• Do not smoke in bed

Fire safety tips

With the winter season comes the added risk of fires, especially in the informal settlements. Paraffin is one of the major contributors of fires during this season. It is important to take extra caution when using this flammable substance. Improper care could lead to severe burns and fires which can place the entire informal settlement in danger.

Single Let’s Mingle is a new East Rand dating club;started by match-maker Tanya Parsons.

Single Let’s Mingle offers a personal service, unlike an online dating site or chat room, where people from all walks of life can come to meet someone special. The club provides those in search of love with a platform to meet and interact with other singles in a safe environment. The club offers the following services:• Speed dating: this is by invitation only; all club members submit profiles prior to the speed dates. Tanya will then match the different profiles to determine compatibility. The group selected for a particular speed dating session will consist of all the people who share similar profiles. • Social activities: this includes social gatherings and is open to all club members. These events are not profiled; allowing everyone to mingle.• Personal profiling and match-making: each member can view other profiles and after speed dating sessions, if both members indicate a liking in one-another, then Tanya will exchange their contact details. If, however, one member indicates a liking in another, but the other does not share his/her feelings, then it is not a match

and your details will remain private.“Here you will be spoilt for choice. It opens up the playground for singles. It is easier to communicate, because everyone is available and look forward to meeting you. It exposes you to other singles and broadens your horizons,” Tanya explained. According to Tanya, the club welcomes anyone, regardless of sexual preference, age or physical appearance. Single Let’s Mingle is especially aimed at older people who have been hurt in love; such as divorced singles with children, or older ladies and gentlemen who have not yet met their soul mates- for whichever reason. Tanya warns prospective members that the club is not a place to come looking for one-night-stands, and they are also not in a position to determine whether everyone applying to speed date is honest about their backgrounds. She wants her members to feel that they can wear their hearts on their sleeves, and urges only members who are passionate about love and finding someone to care for, to enter. “It is not to say that if you have failed in love once, that you will never find it again.” If you are eager to join the club and fall in love, contact Tanya on 074 038 5826 or [email protected].

2015 Gauteng school registration closed2015 Gauteng school registration closedThe last day on which parents could submit forms and documents back to schools for the registration of learners for the 2015 academic year was on 27 May.The Gauteng Education Department launched the Public School- Admissions Campaign on 7 April 2014 to encourage parents to apply early to avoid the last minute rush in 2015. Parents seeking to register their children for admission in a public school had until 27 May to go to their nearest school to pick up application forms for learners who want to start Grade 1 or Grade 8 in this province in 2015. These application forms should have be returned to the school as of 15 April 2014 to 27 May 2014.The MEC for Education in Gauteng, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi expressed appreciation to parents who adhered to the admissions period and applied early. “We would like to thank all parents for cooperating during the registration period. Your timeous response will enable us to ensure all our schools are ready to operate from the first day of school in 2015,” said MEC

Lesufi. The MEC indicated that the department would explore possible ways of improving the admissions, including the role that ICTs can play in this process. Gauteng has over 2000 public ordinary schools that accommodate 1.9 million learners. The province is also prone to a high demand for space, applying early affords the department to plan better for the next academic year and put parents at ease. The department remains committed to complying with its constitutional obligation to place all those who need space in public schools in Gauteng. This means that the department will assist parents with late applications. However, applying late reduces the chances of parents getting the school of their first choice where they meet the criteria. This means that learners will be placed at a school where there is space available, this might not be close to where their parents work or reside.

4 FaShIon TIPS aT your FIngErTIPS Today!

1. Actual quality versus perceived quality Buy well-constructed pieces that fit your style personality and ensure the purchase price matches the quality of the workmanship. Locally produced and manufactured items offer you considerably higher standards of quality at a much lower price as all of the extra costs of importing are eliminated. 2. Try new brands As a fashion lover, you probably have a tendency to

stick to the more well-known and therefore “reputable” brands, but you may be overlooking the unbelievable local design talent that is taking the international fashion scene by storm. Step out of your style rut and give South African designer brands a try.3. Custom made look Choose clothing items that have a custom made look and feel that suit your body type. If you find an item that accentuates your best features, consider buying a few pairs in different colours.4. Enhance your outfit

Accessories can make or break an outfit. The old adage of “Less Is More” has never been more fitting than in fashion, so don’t overload on accessories that detract from the beauty of an outfit. Keep in mind the garment’s features that you would like to emphasise and choose one or two classic pieces that enhance those focus points.Rate this article between 1 to 5 and stand a chance to win a 4” inch Mint Mobile phone. Boston City Campus & Business College was thrilled to announce its partnership with loveLife – South Africa’s largest national HIV prevention initiative for young people. “The issues of social development and youth empowerment are of such paramount importance, and this partnership not only presents an ideal opportunity to give back to the communities who loyally support us, but also helps up skill loveLife staff members and loveLife’s young leaders known as groundBREAKERS,” Craig Stollard, financial director at Boston said.Running nationally for a full year, and with Boston as the national education provider, 200 loveLife groundBREAKERs will undergo training in an accredited Business Administration qualification at Boston Campuses, while about 150 loveLife staff members are registered for the accredited Human Resource Management qualification. For loveLife’s CEO, Grace Matlhape, this is indeed a proud moment: “In order for us to continuously grow in the ways we do to empower and educate young South Africans, we also need to ensure the continuous development of the loveLife team and volunteers. In the context of high levels of unemployment among young people in South Africa, the partnership with Boston is a door opener;

both for our staff in their personal capacity, but also for the young groundBREAKERS for whom these courses are hoped to facilitate access to opportunity”.Members of the public who would like to offer a helping hand in their very own communities should enquire about, and enrol for, Boston’s HIV/AIDS Counselling and Management course. This course is also targeted at professionals in the health and social sciences, nurses, social workers, psychologists, teachers, religious workers, and more. It aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to deal with HIV/AIDS in different care, counselling, corporate and educational situations in the multicultural South African context. It offers students the opportunity to: disseminate correct and relevant information on HIV/AIDS in the community; facilitate the breakdown of negative attitudes, stereotypes and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS; promote HIV/AIDS prevention strategies in the community; counsel clients on various HIV/AIDS aspects; provide pre- and post-HIV test counselling; deal with cultural and sexual diversity; apply basic legal and ethical issues in various contexts; understand

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be kicking off in two days’ time, the 32 teams are ready and the world’s football lovers have caught the fever synonymous with the greatest sports tournament on the planet.

In recent years the FIFA World cup has become the platform to launch football’s new stars; this year’s spectacular (hosted in Brazil) will be no different. Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are will be working hard to round off their

careers with the most sought after and most recognised sports prize in the world.Five-time world champions; Brazil, also have their own raising star Neimar to help secure their sixth victory and what better a time to do this than on home soil. Brazilians have marked the tournament as Neimar’s perfect platform to introduce himself as one of the Brazil’s star strikers emulating the great Pele, Ronaldo and Ronaldino. Defending champions; Spain also have a trick up their sleeve with the introduction of

Diego Costa to the already potent la furia roja. The 25 year old Brazilian-born striker will be adding a new dimension to Vicente del Bosque’s world cup winning side. All eyes are watching the English team, and optimistic that they surpass their previous FIFA World Cup mediocre record. Hopes of their resurrection from being an average team to be counted amongst the football giants, is solely placed on the shoulders of the inform Steven Gerald. The Liverpool captain pinpointing passes from the heart of

the pitch would find their lethal striker Wayne Roonie. Roonie will also be eager to score in this year’s tournament after failing to do so in South Africa’s 2010 World Cup. Other tournament dark horses soccer pundits are looking at include Italy and Greece. Africa’s hopes are in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, and Algeria. No African team has ever won the World Cup, but hopes remain high hinged on the recent mass migration of African players into European leagues.
