Sustainable Color Communication

description

This presentation shows how to reduce the environmental impact of the apparel and fashion industry. These industries have been criticized a lot due to the usage of hazardous chemicals and the pollution (e.g. “Dirty Laundry” Report by Greenpeace). There are 4 main steps, from the first color inspiration through the color design and development to the production which ends with the finished product in the store. For all these steps there are ways to improve which leads to lower costs, better quality and a smaller environmental footprint.

Sustainable Color Inspiration

Color Inspiration in Design●Design decision has impact on development, production and retail●Design has the greatest potential for changing the output of the process●Most design decisions related to color will result in a chemical decision later in the

chain

Sustainable Inspiration●Live stream runway

` NY fashion week on YouTube ●Online forecasting

Sustainable Color Design & Development

Impact of directly communicating from designer to vendor/textile mill

Color sample cuttings●As color sample cuttings may come from different sources – garments, pieces of fabric -

the dyes and chemicals used are unknown, and may not meet your quality and ecological requirements

●Traditionally the samples of color are too small for vendor/textile mill to produce RFT lab dip causing unnecessary use of water, energy, chemicals and in addition unnecessary sending of numerous physical lab dip samples for approval

Sustainable Color Production

The color standard of a color service provider that is connected to a dyestuff supplier provides answers to all the unknowns about the color inspiration

Knowing the dyes of the color ●The vendor/textile mill be presented with a color fundament (QTX file) the RFT of

dyeing the fabrics will improve and limit the wastage of water, energy, dyes and chemicals

●Using Globally available dyes and chemicals that are consistent in quality and are tested to meet your RSLs will limit damage to brand identity

●The right color on the rack results in more sales
