Surah 56 The Great Event

Short Summary

The name Al-Waqiah means The Inevitable Event and refers to the Day of Judgment. It was revealed in

the 5th year of Prophethood.

The Surah starts with a description of the event of the Day of Judgment.

The earth will shake with a terrible magnitude, and the mountains will crumble into scattered

dust.

People will be divided into three groups:

o The blessed people on the right, who will have their Record in the right

hand. They will in Paradise – around them will be Lote trees, clusters of bananas,

extended thick shades, constantly flowing water, abundant fruits. They will be reclining

on high raised couches. Their wives will be special creations, made virgin, equal in age.

o The cursed people on the left, who will have their Record in the left hand.

They will be in Hell – in midst of scorching winds, boiling water, and shade of pitch-

dark smoke. They will eat from the Zaqqum tree and drink boiling water.

o The foremost people, most of them are believers from early generation, and

some from the Prophet’s generation – they will be the first to enter Paradise and will be

close to AllahSWT

. They will have jeweled couches, reclining on them facing each other.

They will be served by eternal youths with cups, jugs, and glasses of pure wine, which

will not be intoxicating nor causing headache. They will eat fruits and fowl of their

choice, and Hoors with beautiful big eyes as lovely as well guarded pearls.

AllahSWT

has described these events for people to accept invitation to Islam from the MessengerSAW

through Quran – which AllahSWT

says:

I swear by the setting of the stars, and it is a mighty oath if you knew it, that this is indeed an honorable Qur’an, inscribed in a well guarded Book, which none can touch except the purified ones, and it is a

revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

The Blessings of Surah Al-Waqiah

1. Prophet MohammadSAW

said:”Whoever recites Surrah al Waqiah at night would never encounter

poverty.”'

2. Prophet MohammadSAW

said: “Surah al Waqiah is the Surrah of Wealth, so recite it and teach it to

your children.”

3. UthmanRA once went to Ibn Mas’oodRA paying him a visit in his sickness in which he passed away.

He asked, "What illness do you have?"

Ibn Mas’oodRA replied, "My sins."

He inquired, "What do you desire?"

He replied, "The mercy of my Lord."

He asked, "Shall we not call someone to bring a doctor for you?"

Ibn Mas’oodRA replied, "It is a doctor that has made me sick."

UthmanRA asked again, "Shall I give order for your payment to be given."

He replied, "I have no need of it, you withheld it from me during my lifetime and at my death you are giving it to me."

UthmanRA said, "After you it will remain for your daughters."

Ibn Mas’oodRA said, "Do you fear poverty over my daughters, I have instructed them to recite every night Surah Waqi’ah for I have heard Rasoolullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam say, ‘He who recites Surah Waqi’ah every night, poverty will never afflict him."

SURAH Al-Waqiah

Bis~mil~lahir Rah~maanir Raheem

(I start) in the name of Allah,

the Most Gracious the Most Merciful.

SECTION 1

1. Iza waqa’atil waaqiah

When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) occurs,

2. Lai~sa liwaq~’atihaa kaazibah.

There could be no denying of its occurrence.

3. Khaa~fidatur raafiah;

It will bring down (some) and raise up (others.)

4. Iza ruj~jatil ardu raj~ja;

When the earth will be shaken with convulsion;

5. Wa bus~satil jibaalu bas~sa;

And the mountains will be powdered to dust;

6. Fakaanat habaa~ am mum~bats~sa;

So that they will become floating dust particles

7. Wa kun~tum az~waajan tsala~tsah.

And you (all) will be in three kinds (separate groups).

8. Fa as~haabul mai~manati maa as~haabul mai~manah.

So those on the Right Hand (i.e. whose Records would

be in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right

Hand?

9. Wa as~ haabul mash~amati maa as~haabul

mash~amah

And those on the Left Hand (i.e. whose Records would

be in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left

Hand?

10. Was~saabiqoo~nas saabiqoon

And those foremost ( who embraced Islam on the first

call,) will be foremost (in Paradise).

11. Ulaa~ikal muqar rabuoon

These will be those nearest to Allah.

1. The Event Inevitable is the Hour of Judgment. People may doubt now whether it will come. But when it comes, as it will come,

suddenly upon them, it will come with such tremendous reality that it will be burnt deep into the experience of every soul. No one can then be deceived or entertain false notions about it.

3. There will be a sorting out of Good and Evil. There will be three main classes. Among the Good there will be the exalted class, those

nearest to Allah (muqarrabun), and the righteous people, called the Companions of the Right Hand (Ashab-ul-maimana.). And there will be those in agony, the Companions of the Left Hand (Ashab-ul-mash-ama). Many who were high and mighty in this life will be brought low for their sins, and many who were lowly but virtuous will be exalted to various ranks and degrees. The old landmarks will be lost in the inner world, as they will be in the outer world.)

10. Foremost (in Faith)": there are two meanings, and both are implied (1) Those who have reached the highest degree in spiritual

understanding, such as the great prophets and teachers of mankind, will also take precedence in the Hereafter. (2) Those who are the first in time-the quickest and readiest-to accept Allah's Message-will have the first place in the Kingdom of Heaven. Verses 8, 9 and 10 mention the three main categories or classifications after Judgment. This category, Foremost in Faith, is nearest to Allah.

12. Fee jan~naatin na~eem

In the Gardens of delight (Paradise).

13. Sul~latum minal aw~waleen

A (large) company of the former people;

14. Wa qalee~lum minal aakhireen

And a few of the later peoples,

15. Alaa sururim mau~dunah

(Sitting) on thrones woven (with ornament),

16. Mut~ taki~eena ‘alay~ha muta~qaabileen

Reclining on them, facing each other.

17. Yatoofu ‘alay~him wil~danum~mukhal~ladoon

There will wait on them young boys with eternal youth

18. Be ak~waabinw wa abaareeqa wa kasim~ mim ma’een

With goblets, pitchers and a cup (of wine) from a

flowing spring –

19. La yusad da’oona ‘an~ha walaa yun~zifoon

No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be

intoxicated

20. Wa faaki~hatim mim~ma yata~khay~yaroon

And fruit of what (ever) they choose

21. Wa lah~mi tai~rim mim~ ma yash~tahoon

And the flesh of fowls that they desire.

22. Wa hoo~run ‘een

And (for them are) hour (fair women) with large,

(beautiful) eyes

23. Ka~am~saalil lu’ lu il mak~noon

The likenesses of well-protected pearls,

24. Jazaa~ am bimaa kaanu ya’maloon.

As reward for what (good deeds) they used to do.

25. La yas~ma’oona feeha lagh~wanw wa la ta’seema.

They will not hear evil vain talk therein, nor any sinful

speech (like backbiting, etc.);

26. Il~la qeelan salaaman salaamaa.

except only the greetings of “Peace be upon you!

Peace be upon you!”

13. Of great Prophets and Teachers there were many before the time of the holy Prophet MuhammadSAW. As he was the last of the

Prophets, he and the great Teachers under his Dispensation will be comparatively fewer in number; “the former” also has another meaning as those who were quick in adopting the teachings of the Prophets. 16. But they will not be separated, each isolated in his own corner. They will be facing each other. For they are all one, and their mutual society will be part of their Bliss.

27. Wa as~haabul yameeni maa as~haabul yameen

And those on the Right Hand, Who will be the

companions of the Right?

28. Fee sid~rim makh~dood

(They will be) among thornless lote-trees,

29. Wa tal~him man~dood

Among banana-trees with fruits piled one above

another,

30. Wa zil~lim mam~dood

And extended thick shades

31. Wa maa im~mas~koob

And constantly flowing water

32. Wa faakihatin katsee~rah

And fruit, abundant (and varied),

33. La maq~tu’atinw wa la mam~nu’aah

Neither limited (quantity or to season) nor forbidden,

34. Wa furushim mar~fu’aah

And on couches or thrones, raised high

35. In~ naa an~sha’~naahun~na in~shaa

Indeed! We have created (their Companions) of special

creation.

36. Faja'al~na hun~na ab~kaaraa

And made them virgins.

37. ‘Uruban at~raaba

Loving and devoted (their husbands only), equal in age.

38. Lee as~haabil yameen

For those of the Right Hand.

SECTION 2

39. Sul~latum minal aw~waleen

A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from

the first generation (who embraced Islam).

40. Wa sul~ latum minal aakhireen

And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be

from the later times (generations).

36. The pronoun in Arabic is in the feminine gender. It is made clear that these maidens for heavenly society will be of special creation, of virginal purity, grace, and beauty, inspiring and inspired by love, with the question of time and age eliminated,

39. This class of the righteous will be a large company in Heaven, belonging to all the ages of the world.

41. Wa as~haabush~shimali, maa as~haabush shimaal;

And the companions of the left – who will be the

companions of the left?

42. Fee samoo~minw wa hameem

(They will be) in scorching fire and scalding water

43. Wa zil~lim mee~yah~moom

And a shade of black smoke,

44. La baaridinw wa la kareem

Neither cool nor beneficial.

45. In~nahum kaanu qab~la zaalika mut~rafeen

Indeed they were, before that, (indulging in) affluence

46. Wa kaanu yusir~roona ‘alal hin~sil ‘azeem

And they were persisting in great sin

47. Wa kaanu yaqoo~loona a iza mit~na wa kun~na

turaabanw wa ‘izaaman a in~na lamab~’oo~tsoon

And they used to say: "When we die and become dust

and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?

48. Awa aabaa unal aw~waloon

"And also our forefathers?"

49. Qul in~nal aw~waleena wal aakhireen

Say (O MuhammadSAW

): "(Yes) verily, those of former,

and those of later times.

50. Lamaj~moo’oona ilaa meeqaati yau~mim ma’loom

"All will surely be gathered together for appointed

Meeting of a known Day.

51. Sum~ma in~nakum ay~yuhad daal~loonal

mukaz~ziboon

Then indeed you, O those astray (who are) the deniers,

52. La aakiloona min shajarim min zaq~qoom

Will be eating from trees of zaqqum

53. Famaali’oona min~hal butoon

And filling with it your bellies

54. Fa~shaariboona alaihi minal hameem

And drinking on top of it from scalding water

55. Fa~shaariboona shur~bal heem

And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

56. Haaza nuzuluhum yau~mad deen

That will be their entertainment on the Day of

Recompense!

42. Notice the parallelism in the contrast between those in Bliss and those in Misery. The description in each case pursues the idea of contrast. The fierce Blast of Fire and the Boiling Water are in contrast to the happy Lote-tree and the flowers and fruits

57. Nah~nu khalaq~naakum falau la tusad~diqoon

We created you, then why don’t you testify the truth?

58. Afara aitum ma tum~noon

Have you seen the (human semen) that you emit?

59. A an~tum takh~luqoo~nahoo am nah~nul khaaliqoon

Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?

60. Nah~nu qad~dar~na bai~nakumul mau~ta wa

maa nah~nu bimas~boo~qeen

We have decreed death among you, and We are not to

be outdone

61. ‘Alaa an nubad~dila am~saalakum wa nun~shi~akum fee maa la ta’lamoon

In that We will change your likenesses and produce you

in that (form) which you do not know.

62. Wa laqad alim~tumun~nash~atal oolaa falau la tazak~karoon

And you have already known the first creation, so will

you not remember?

63. Afara ai~tum maa tah~rutsoon

And have you seen that (seed) which you sow?

64. A ‘an~tum taz~ra’oo~nahoo am nah~nuz zaari’oon

Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the Grower?

65. Lau nashaa oo lajaal~na hu hutaaman fazal~tum tafak~kahoon

If We willed, We could make it (dry) debris, and you

would remain in wonder,

66. In~na lamugh~ramoon

(Saying), "Indeed, we are (now) in debt;

67. Bal nah~nu mah~ru~moon

Indeed, we have been deprived (of fruits of our labor.)"

60. Just as Allah has created this life that we see, so He has decreed that Death should be the common lot of all of us. Surely, if He can thus give life and death, as we see it, why should we refuse to believe that He can give us other forms when this life is over? The Future Life, though indicated by what we know now, is to be on a wholly different plane.

63. Having appealed to our own nature within us, He appeals now to the external nature around us, which should be evidence to us (1) of His loving care for us, and (2) of its being due to causes other than those which we produce and control. Three examples are given: (1) the seed which we sow in the soil; it is Allah's processes in nature, which make it grow; (2) the water which we drink; it is Allah's processes in nature, that send it down from the clouds as rain, and distribute it through springs and rivers: (3) the fire which we strike; it is again a proof of Allah's Plan and Wisdom in nature.

66. The cultivator contracts debts for seed and gives labor for ploughing, sowing, watering, and weeding, in the hope of reaping a harvest. Should he not give thanks to Allah when his harvest is in?

68. Afara ai~tumul maaa al~lazee tash~raboon

And have you seen the water that you drink?

69. A an~tum an~zal~tumoo~hu minal muz~ni am

nah~nul mun~ziloon

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it

We who bring it down?

70. Lau nashaa~u ja’al~naahu ujaajan falau la

tash~kuroon

If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you

not grateful?

71. Afara ai~tumun naaral latee tu~roon

And have you seen the fire that you ignite?

72. A an~tum an~sha’tum shajaratahaa am nah~nul mun~shi~oon

Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?

73. Nah~nu ja’al~naaha taz~kiratanw wa ma taa’al

lil~muq~ween

We have made it a reminder and provision for the

travelers,

74. Fasab~bih bis~mi Rab~bikal Azeem

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

70. The wonder of the two streams of water, one sweet and the other salt, constantly mingling, and yet always separate, is referred to more than once. The never-ending circuit is established by streams and rivers mingling with the ocean, the ocean sending forth mists and steam through a process of evaporation which forms clouds, and the clouds by condensation pouring forth rain to feed the streams and rivers again

72. The relation of Fire to Trees is intimate. In nearly all the fire that we burn, the fuel is derived from the wood of trees. Even mineral coal is nothing but the wood of prehistoric forests petrified under the earth through geological ages.

73. A fire in a desert is a sign of human habitation; by following it you may get human society and human comfort. A fire, or light, or beacon in many places directs a traveller or the way. Lighthouses at sea and becons in modem aerodromes serve the same purpose for mariners and airmen.

75. Falaa uq~simu bimawaaqi’in nujoom

Then I swear by the setting of the stars,

76. Wa in~nahoo laqasamul lau ta’lamoona Azeem

And indeed, it is a great oath – if you only knew it.

77. In~ nahoo laqur~aanun kareem

Indeed, it is the noble Qur'an

78. Fee kitaabim mak~noon

In a Register well-protected;

79. La yamas~ suhoo il~lal mutah~haroon

No one can touch it except the purified.

80. Tanzeelum mir Rab~bil ‘aalameen

(It is) a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

81. Afa~bihaazal hadee~si an~tum mud~hinoon

Then is it to this scripture that you are indifferent,

82. Wa taj~aloona riz~qakum an~nakum tukaz~ziboon

and have made it your livelihood that you should

declare it false?

77. Your attention is drawn to the momentous issues of the Future by the Quran. It is a Revelation described by four characterist ics. (1) It is most honorable, Kareem, which implies, besides the fact that it is worthy of receiving honor, that it confers great favors on those who receive it. (2) It is well-guarded, Maknoon; precious in itself, and well- preserved in its purity; (3) None but the clean shall touch it, dean in body, mind, thought, intention, and soul; only such can achieve real contact with its full meaning. (4) It is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds, and therefore universal for all.

82. The worst indictment of an enemy of Revelation would be that he should make Falsehood a source of filthy business for himself, or that he should let his precious life be corrupted by such unholy occupation.

83. alau la izaa balaghatil hul~qoom

Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat,

84. Wa an~tum hee~na’izin tan~zhuroon

And you are at that time looking on –

85. Wa nah~nu aq~rabu ilai~hi min~kum wa laakil

la tub~siroon.

And Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do

not see –

86. Falau la in kun~tum ghai~ra madineen

Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

87. Tar~ji’u~nahaa in kun~tum saadiqeen

Bring it back, if you should be truthful?

88. Fa a~maa in kaana minal muqar~rabeen

And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah,

89. Farau~hunw wa rai~haanunw wa jan~natu na~eem.

Then (for him is) rest and bounty and a garden of

pleasure.

90. Wa am~maa in kaana min as~haabil yameen

And if he was of the companions of the right,

91. Fa~salaamul laka min as~haabil yameen

Then (the angels will say), "Peace for you; (you are)

from the companions of the right."

92. Wa am~ma in kana minal mukaz~zibinad~dal~leen;

But if he was of the deniers (who were) astray,

93. Fa~nuzulum min hameem

Then (for him is) accommodation of scalding water;

94. Wa tas~liyatu jaheem

And burning in Hellfire

95. In~na haaza lahuwa haq~qul yaqeen

Indeed, this is the true certainty,

96. Fasab~bih bis~mi Rab~bikal ‘Azeem

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

84. The dying man's friends, relatives, and companions may be sitting round him and quite close to him in his last moments, but Al lah is nearer still at all times for He is nearer than the man's own jugular vein, and one of Allah's own titles is "Ever Near".

87. The sentence may now be briefly paraphrased. 'If you disbelieve in Revelation and a future Judgment, and claim to do what you like and be independent of Allah, how is it you cannot call back a dying man's soul to his body when all of you congregate round him at his death-bed? But you are not independent of Judgment. There is a Day of Account, when you will have to be judged by your deeds in this life.'

91. In Ayah 26 above the salutation of "Peace, Peace!" is addressed to those Nearest to Allah. Here we learn that it is also addressed to the Companions of the Right Hand. Both are in Gardens of Bliss; only the former have a higher Dignity than the latter.

96. In Ayah 74 above: That was the conclusion of the argument about the Future from the examples of Allah's goodness in nature. Now we have the conclusion of the same argument from Allah's revelation through His inspired Messengers.

A Methodology to Memorize the Quran

There is no single way to follow in memorizing the Quran. Various people have adopted

different ways to memorize Quran successfully. The following is a recommended way

which Hafiz Amir Qasmi found effective in memorizing the Quran.

In the Morning

1. Start the memorization in the morning.

2. Take one Ayah and read it several times and note the proper Tajweed in reading it.

3. Then memorize it to heart and repeat it several times (at least 15 times)

4. Take the next Ayah and repeat steps 2&3 for it.

5. Then take the two Ayah just memorized and repeat it several times (at least 15

times)

6. Continue the process until your goal for the day is achieved.

At Night

7. Read all the Ayah memorized in the morning and note the proper Tajweed in

reading it.

8. Then, recite it from the memory several times (at least 10 times.)

9. Do not be disheartend – remain steadfast and AllahSWT

will help you, Insha Allah!

AllahSWT

’s Guidance in Surah Al-Mulk

1. The Kingdom of the universe belongs to Allah

2. No one can help you against AllahSWT

3. No one can provide you sustenance besides AllahSWT

4. No one can save you from the punishment of AllahSWT

5. On the Day of Judgment, the sinners will wish that they had listened to the message

of AllahSWT

that the Prophet MuhammadSAW

and other Messengers brought to them.

6. We should be ever grateful to AllahSWT

for the bounties He has provided it.

7. And we mush remember that AllahSWT

has Al-Aziz (all Powerful), He is Al-Ghafoor

(All Forgiving), Al-Lateef (Knower of even subtle things), and Al-Khabeer (Knows

everything.)
