THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Q. Why do some priests wear

wedding bands and others do not?

A. Some priests wear wedding

bands to symbolize their spiritual marriage to the Church. As an alter-Chrisus (another Christ) the priest is wed as a bridegroom to the Church as his bride. The wedding band also has the practical value of showing that a priest is “off limits” when not dressed in clerics. Others of us just don’t like jewelry; I am obviously in this second camp ;)

ASK FATHER! OUR YOUNG CHURCH

PSR and Youth Ministry will resume next week, Nov 28, 5:30-7:15 pm in the PSR school building.

Attention Liturgical Ministers— Something New!

Starting with the December ministry schedule, we will have a “Liturgical Minister Sign-up” calendar on our church website to aid in the scheduling of Altar Servers, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors. We hope this will be a convenient and easy way for you to schedule when you are available to help serve. For those dates you know you are not able to help serve, you can also sign up as unavailable. Go to www.sttheresegarfield.org and click on the “Liturgical Minister Sign-up” in the menu bar. “How to” directions will be on the home page of the website. The calendar is available for scheduling now. We ask that you sign up as soon as possible. We will review the schedule 2 weeks before the new month and if there are still open positions, we will schedule those positions as we have in the past. Communion Minister positions will be finalized by the office to ensure a fair rotation. For those who do not have computer access, you may call Cindy at the office, 216-581-2852, for assistance in helping you schedule.

The Social Concerns Commission will once again display the Giving Tree with tags for parishioners to take to help the less fortunate in our

area. The tree will be up beginning on Saturday, November 17. The gifts must be under the tree by the weekend of December 8/9, or they can be dropped off at the rectory no later than December 14. Thank you for your generosity!

Congratulations to:

Pat & Sue Nelson and Betty Visconti

who won $100 in our weekend drawing for November 10/11!

Attention Seniors: Our next meeting is on Monday, November 19, at 1:30 p.m. in the church hall. Our Christmas party will be on Monday, December 10, at 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus annex. The cost is $15. We must have your reservations and money by the next meeting on November 19.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development Please be generous in this week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25% of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

Dinner’s On!

Your donation of a breakfast, lunch or dinner food item in the upcoming weeks for Fr. John & Fr. Odokodit is still much appreciated. To schedule a drop off, call the parish office or go to the parish website and click on Dinner's On!

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Lord be with you!

Having gone over Original Sin almost to death, we will be talking about actual sin for the next several weeks. In making the distinction between the state of sin and our actual sins, the Church is helping us to focus on what we need to improve the most. Although all sin is repugnant, we ought to correct our serious sins first before attempting to tackle our smaller ones.

Question 274. How is sin divided?

Answer. (1) Sin is divided into the sin we inherit called original sin, and the sin we commit ourselves, called actual sin. (2) Actual sin is sub-divided into greater sins, called mortal, and lesser sins, called venial.

Question 275. In how many ways may actual sin be committed?

Answer. Actual sin may be committed in two ways: namely, by willfully doing things forbidden, or by willfully neglecting things commanded.

Question 276. What is our sin called when we neglect things commanded?

Answer. When we neglect things commanded our sin is called a sin of omission. Such sins as willfully neglecting to hear Mass on Sundays, or neglecting to go to Confession at least once a year, are sins of omission.

Question 277. Is original sin the only kind of sin?

Answer. Original sin is not the only kind of sin; there is another kind of sin, which we commit ourselves, called actual sin.

Question 278. What is actual sin?

Answer. Actual sin is any willful thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the law of God.

Question 279. How many kinds of actual sin are there?

Answer. There are two kinds of actual sin -- mortal and venial.

My commentary.

The above six questions are a little repetitive because they are emphasizing a few important truths. Firstly, they are implicitly stressing that we need to have both our Original Sin and actual sins forgiven. With Baptism the state of Original Sin (but not its four wounds) cease in us; unfortunately, almost all of us cannot maintain that state of innocence that Baptism gives us. Secondly, the Catholic Church distinguishes between mortal sins and venial sins. A mortal sin is so called because it causes the life of grace to die within us; a venial sin is a lesser sin that only damages the life of grace. Whereas a venial sin is like a scrape, a mortal sin is like loosing a limb (we will go over mortal sins in more detail next week). Thirdly, the Baltimore Catechism divides actual sins into sins of commission and omission. As the Confiteor reminds us, we commit sins by what we have said, done, thought, and by what we have not done but should have.

Our wound of weakness leads many of us to committing sins of omissions. The best example of a mortal sin of omission is neglecting Sunday Mass. Going out to brunch on a Sunday or getting some extra sleep are certainly not intrinsically wrong; these acts become wrong when we do them instead of our duty to attend Mass.

As the “Ask Father” mentioned a couple of weeks ago, it can be tricky convincing people that they are neglecting something important. When trying to persuade someone, we need to think rationally and rhetorically. In the first way we use reason to demonstrate that God has a right to be worshipped, has commanded us to do so, and our Baptism binds us to do so. The second way - the way of rhetoric - attempts to persuade by appealing to the other’s emotions. Here some questions that must be asked beforehand, such as “Why is this person not going to Church?” and, “What have they made more important than God?” Now, accusing someone of mortal sin usually kills the conversation, so first try appealing to what both of you agree on, such as “Doesn’t God deserve a full church?”

As we learn more about sin we ought to ask ourselves about our own faults and failings first. None of us are immune to temptation, and most of us sin frequently. Luckily, the Church has given us the wonderful sacrament of Reconciliation. May we always seek and share His Divine Mercy.

In Christ, Fr. John
