The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2015/16 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2015 and are as follows:

● Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) ● Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

(All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $47) A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

Please contact the membership officer for further information regarding membership, including pro-rata and monthly rates.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the June Subaru 4WD Club magazine. I hope everyone has been keeping warm lately. This winter is certainly turning on the cold and wet days.

It was fantastic to have Suzette Fullerton from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (Latrobe Valley region) at our May General Meeting. Her enthusiasm and passion for the bush shone through as well as her foresight for the improvement potential for so many of these special areas we travel through. We heard about the development of 4WD touring routes, restoration of huts, fire recovery works, seasonal road closures and working with volunteers. I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that it was a very informative, engaging and interesting presentation on places we frequent as a club. Thank you, again, to Suzette for her time.

I’d also like to acknowledge and thank Les for a fantastic impromptu presentation on river crossings (or lessons learned!) during our General Business segment of the meeting. Les provided an entertaining, but valuable, reminder of the importance of proper preparation prior to crossing rivers. We can often get complacent when we’re travelling through challenging terrain. And, when we’re at the end of a day, we might be too tired to bother with putting a tarp on or walking a river to check its depth. We mustn’t forget that river crossings can cause significant damage (and potentially be catastrophic) to our vehicles if the proper precautions aren’t taken. The take-away messages from Les’ presentation are; if in doubt, walk it; hook up a snatch strap just in case – it can’t hurt; put a tarp across the front if you’re concerned about the depth… and finally; door seals work well! (…at least for a little while!). Thanks for an entertaining presentation, Les.

If you have a tip, interesting story or life lesson, be sure to share it with us in the General Business segment at our meetings. You may have a camp cooking tip, storage idea, four wheel driving technique or mechanical story – you name it, we are bound to find it interesting. It’s great to share information and advice as much as we can within our club. Even if you think some of us will have thought of it before, chances are there will be a few in the room that may not have heard of it. Even if we have, it’s always good to hear helpful reminders! So, have a think about something you’d like to share and feel free to bring it up at our next meeting.

Since last month’s meeting, we’ve had two great events run for our club; the Explore Australia Expo and the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend Trip at Jamie’s place. Both were very successful events.

Page: 5

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The Explore Australia Expo proved a positive experience for all involved and an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our club. Our stand looked great – lookout for pictures later in the magazine. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to promote our club at the stand; including Jamie, Les, Edith, Graham, Kerry, Paul, Peter D, Tim, Michael, Meredith and Bev. I’d like to especially acknowledge and thank Damian, Les and Jamie for their assistance in setting up the stand on the Thursday evening. Overall, the interest in our club was good. We handed out a number of our rack cards and took the details of prospective members. Those who did come up to our stand for a chat asked us many questions about the club and showed good interest in what we have to offer. We’ve since followed up with them and hope to see them at our upcoming meetings! It certainly was a good opportunity to raise the profile of our club, what we do and, of course, demonstrate the capability of our Subarus.

Jamie’s Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend Trip at his place proved to be another very successful trip. There was quite a bit of apprehension about the likelihood of the trip going ahead given the weather leading up to the weekend. But, the weather cleared for the weekend and we were able to get in some fantastic four wheel driving. The trip toured from Rawson north past the Thompson Dam, up Beardmores Track, then down to Merringtons Flat followed by some great climbs out to O’Tooles Flat Campground along Donnelly’s Creek. Our big day out was finished with a magnificent dinner at the pub in Churchill and a night around a very warm campfire. Jamie’s trip report will be out soon, so be sure to read all about it.

At this month’s General Meeting, the Tassie Trek 2015 full-length feature movie will be shown. This was a challenging but incredibly spectacular trip and we captured some great footage. So, come along to the meeting and be taken on a trip down Tassie’s west-coast!

Enjoy the June magazine and I’ll see you at the June General Meeting and/or out on the tracks – wherever we may be heading!

EDITOR’S REPORT

JUNE GENERAL MEETING

Date: Tuesday 30th June at 8pm.

Venue: South Camberwell Tennis Club, 332 Burke Road, Glen Iris

Stephen has finished putting together the video of the recent trip to

Tasmania. Come along and enjoy this with us all.

Door Prize: Come along to win a special door prize at this month’s meeting.

Venue Coordinator

Thank you to all the members that help out the Aussie expo over the weekend and thank you to Stephen for all his work. Winter is here so we have no excused for not getting out there and running a day trip or an event of some type. Just because it is getting colder and some tracks are closing there are still lots areas to explore and things to do.

We would like to have a few mid week trips and events to cater for those Club members who are shift workers, work weekends, work part time or are

retired. So if this is you and you would like to arrange a mid week trip please consider doing so. You might just want to do a day trip or even a social event such as a Lunch and Movie.

Midweek Mungo Meander

Standard: Easy ● if the weather is dry

Trip Leader: Jessica Walsh email: [email protected]

Fees: Day entry per car $7, Camping per adult/child $5/$3 per night.

Vehicle limit: 10 cars

I am off to Mungo for a few days at the end of July. Mungo National Park is located in NSW in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. This is a midweek trip to allow for those who work weekends to come along. Some information on the park is here: www.visitmungo.com.au

We will be staying in a Mildura caravan park on Tuesday night, to allow people to arrive at their own leisure. Mildura is 5-6 hours north of Melbourne.

Wednesday will see us heading to Mungo, which is a further two hours north. There is an excellent camping area with toilets and shaded campsites (see fees, above). They have a great interpretive center to spend the afternoon learning about some of Australia’s oldest inhabitants. From here there is a 70km loop track that passes much the park has to offer, which I plan to do on Thursday. A leisurely pack-up and then head home on Friday.

A walk to watch the sunset on the Walls of China is also not to be missed, which we will do either or both nights depending on the weather.

This is an isolated area, so please make sure you are self sufficient with water and food. Extra fuel won’t be necessary if you fill up in Mildura. Pack some warm clothes, as this is desert country and it can get very cold at night. (If the nights are clear, it is a star-gazers paradise).

Kinchege NP/ Menindee lakes

Date Friday 31st July to Sunday 9

th August.

Snow Trip

With the early cold snap and some snow already around it is time to think about the Club Snow Trip.

As this trip will often happen on short notice (ie “there have been big falls of snow this week, lets go this weekend”) we require people to put their names on the Trip Intention sheet if they would like to attend. The Trip Leader/Leaders will then contact you to let you know date etc.

On short notice we understand that some people will not be able to attend. But you will only be advised of the trip if you name is on the list.

Photography Day

Jan Rebgetz will run a day for all those photographers in the Club.

Standard :- social ☺

There are many of us in the club who enjoy taking photos, close-ups, macro photography, scenery, nature while we are on trips.

Page: 9

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT

The purpose of this is to get together, take some photos and then later in the day choose a few of our better compositions to share with the group, so that we might discover what makes a good photo, thinking about composition and lighting etc.

Proposed structure of the day:

● To be held in September (date to be confirmed) at Cloudehill Nursery and Gardens at Olinda.

● Have 2 to 3 hours to take photos.

● Have lunch at the restaurant attached to the gardens.

● Then to the Rebgetz residence to view and comment on photos.

Costs:

● $5 to $10 entry (I need to confirm entrance cost) - Diggers Club members are free.

● Lunch at Seasons Restaurant - $25 to $30 for a main meal (food is excellent)

This is a very brief outline and will need more planning.

TRIP REPORTS

Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend Friday: late afternoon, a couple of members arrived with both fires going to keep by, but near dark it was too cold to sit outside, so we moved into the BBQ area. It was a lot warmer in there and with tea done it was off to bed.

Saturday: most were arriving today by lunch time. After lunch we had planned to go for a couple hours drive/play close by. As we were driving around, we went passed a track and a few said we should have a go. About 2Km away we turned around and went back. Rick and Les drove it just. Peter had a go but could not get up to the wash-out. Rick & Les had fun coming back down (no control, no brakes, just sliding down). Then we heard that a couple more had arrived at camp, so we went back.

More wood! with the fire going well and tea cooked we all sat around fire. We had a visitor, Cassie, came out to meet the members. She has got a Forester and would like to do some modifications to it, eg lift kit. Cassie stayed until about 11pm before heading home (she lives close by). l hope she enjoyed herself and hope she come out one day for a drive or maybe even join the club.

Sunday: 7 o’clock there sound outside; 8.30am looking good; but it was around 9am when we left. Headed in to fuel up (for some) and up to Rawson to meet Peter and Katie for the day out. With a loo stop / cuppa off we went. We drove out to the Thomson Dam below the wall to air down ready for the day. First up was a river crossing, not too deep and we climbed up Beardmore Track to the main rd, around to Merrington’s Flat for lunch. With lunch over, we crossed the river to go up Williamson Spur Track - it was a good steep climb all the way to the top. At the end we turned down onto Army Track. From here it’s down to Store Point for a rest and a cuppa and a look around. From here it was back out to follow Donnelly’s Creek along to O’Tooles Flat for a look and along to where we had lunch. One more steep climb to finish off the day and back to the Thomson Dam picnic area to air up for the drive back. “Bloody cold!”, some one said. l think by all in the end.

Now it was dark we had to be back by 6.30pm. A few off us went back to camp to get the fire going and then off for tea at the pub with a nice meal. Once done, back to camp. The fire was going well. l said, “more wood”, so we all sat around the fire and more wood was added. There was lots of talk about the day and morning. There was lot of interesting talk and a few jokes aside. It was good to see all members enjoy the night. “More wood!”. It was a very late night for some.

TRIP REPORTS

Monday: With a good sleep in for all, it was around 9.30am by the time we were all up and out with a slow easy pack-up. One by one they left (Graeme and Kerry Gill stayed for one more night). We had tea and l was off to bed. l was back up at 5.45am on Tuesday ready for work. As l drove out, l should have tooted the horn a few times for a wake call (but l didn’t).

Thank you to all that came along for the weekend l hope you enjoyed it, thanks Jamie

2015 Subaru Outback

Page: 16

Robert Pepper’s 2015 Subaru Outback review with pricing, specs, ride and handling, safety, verdict and rating article on Practical Motoring: https://practicalmotoring.com.au/car-reviews/subaru-outback-2015-onroad-and-offroad-test/

Its worth having a read of the full article above, but below is his summary:

Medium-sized 4WD

The likes of Pajero and Prado are far more capable offroad, better tow vehicles, have greater interior space and are taller. They are more expensive, not as nimble, a bit larger and not quite up there for dynamics, although the Pajero is pretty close. I’d like to say the fuel consumption of the Outback is better, but I doubt it at least in 3.6R guise.

Roadcar wagon

You’ll get better fuel consumption, it’ll cost less and, ride a bit lower and be a bit more agile on bitumen roads. Beyond that…well…nothing. In the Outback you never worry about dirt roads (in fact, you look forwards to them), or driveway drains, and over rough sealed roads it reigns supreme. In fact, hard to think of a reason why you’d buy one and not an Outback. Guess that’s why the Liberty wagon no longer exists.

Other softroader wagons

I have said it before and I’ll say it again – most of the others in this market have on-demand all wheel drive systems which are markedly inferior and that shows up in everything from on-road handling to soft sand. Honourable exceptions are Audi, BMW and Land Rover, but the former two tend to insist on space-saver spares or run-flats which immediately removes it as a serious dirt-road touring option. And as we’ve said, the Subaru Outback is well known, well supported and easy to service or resell. You still see 15 year old Outbacks doing work, not so much premium Euro brands.

Page: 25

COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

● About half of current membership have renewed so far. ● Paul Saleeba has raised an issue regarding his 23 year old

dependent, ie student, daughter being classified under the family membership. Committee has agreed that Paul’s daughter is considered a member of his family for insurance purposes, subject to confirmation by Martin Foot after discussions with Affinity. She does not have any additional voting rights beyond that which Paul, with his current family membership, holds.

● Damian to provide Martin with details of Tony Webster, at Affinity, so that he can seek clarification of cover for Paul’s daughter.

6.5 Editor ● Nothing to report. ● Damian to pass on information regarding a potential advertiser. ● Distribution – details for Shaun Lawlor, regional manager Victoria/

Tasmania.

6.6 Treasurer ● Current balance is $7504.94 within new income comprised of

$1283 membership and expenditure of $752 being for the association’s affiliation fees. The association payment is based on the old affiliation fee of $47. Damian to check with the association office if the renewal notice has been sent to the club as Bob does not remember seeing it as yet.

● Stephen expressed his thanks to Jessica for running the chocolate drive again this year, a very lucrative injection of funds to the club’s bank account.

6.7 Secretary: Nothing to report as Peter is not present.

6.8 Vice-President ● Outstanding monies for three boxes expected to be received in

the coming weeks.

6.9 President ● Explore Australia Expo was a great success with excellent

participation by the members for running the stand. Twelve genuine enquiries will be responded to by Stephen personally, providing details of our coming meetings and access to the online magazine. We did not win any of the three prizes although our stand was definitely as good as the winners. A small amount of effort could win it for us next year.

● Stephen suggested that we change our membership signage to include a clear welcome to other soft-roader vehicle owners. We should review the success of the event in six months, by the

number of confirmed new memberships achieved, and decide whether to attend next year or in two years’ time.

● There was a clear demographic, that were attracted to our club, of vehicle owners who would fit well into our club. Hopefully some will join after Stephen’s follow up.

7. Sub-Committees 7.1 Communications: Nothing to report. 7.2 Community Involvement: Nothing to report. 7.3 Constitution Review

● Nothing to report however Jessica will sit down with Peter when he returns from overseas.

8. General Business ● Discontinuation of General Grabber AT2 in a 16 inch, 65 profile. Martin

contacted them and he was directed to a new AT model that is a bit closer to an HT. This is what Dale has purchased when he wanted to purchase the AT2. Martin has concerns about the ability of the new tyre to handle off road conditions. Dale has been fairly happy with them so far, including using them on the Tasmania trip, apart from less grip on wet bitumen.

● Stephen expressed concerns about an article, titled “Softroaders”, in Just 4x4s “4X4 Gear” magazine. He feels compelled to write to the magazine, as club president, to dispel some of the generalisations contained in the article.

● Jessica would like to propose a change to the club name to make the club sound more inclusive of other vehicle brands. Should this be raised at a general meeting, as a discussion, to gauge interest in it being changed?

● The leadership committee should discourage disparaging comments about other brand vehicles being made at meetings, or at other official events. This is especially important when prospective members are present. Campfire banter, in general, is excluded from this suggestion.

● Discussion around finding a location to erect the club shelter on. Locations between Erica in the west and Licola in the east need to be investigated. Approach to be made to Jamie, Peter Mynard and any others who live in this area, to explore options.

9. Next Meeting will be held on Tuesday July 7th, at 7.30pm, at the home of

Dale Rebgetz.

10. Meeting closed at 10.30pm.
