The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2014/15 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2014 and are as follows:

● Interstate: $110 (Seniors card - $105) ● Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) ● Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

(All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $47) A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Happy New Year! Welcome to the January Subaru 4WD Club magazine for 2015. I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year with your family and friends.

2014 was a great year for our club – here’s hoping 2015 is even better as we continue to grow as a club, welcome new members, travel to our favourite places (and some new ones) and maintain good health all around.

It’s been a couple of months since our last magazine and my last President’s report and there is plenty of news. Our Christmas Party was held on the last weekend in November at Brimbank Park and it was a very enjoyable day. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution – to the cooks behind the BBQ (Martin and Peter), Jamie for bringing ample shelter and everyone else for ensuring a smooth running of what is always a positive social occasion on our club calendar. While it may be a while away now, if you have a location in mind for this year’s Christmas Party, please let us know. We generally aim for a pretty spot that is relatively central for all members and allows us to have the BBQ and plenty of vehicles!

Another event that was a brilliant success for us was the Licola Sign Installation weekend we undertook on 13 & 14 December. It was an initiative of Four Wheel Drive Victoria (FWDV), the Wellington Shire and Tourism Victoria whereby tourist information signs were designed showing distances from Licola to key landmarks in the Victorian High Country (places such as Billy Goat’s Bluff Track, Howitt Hut and Mt Skene to name a few). There was also a large information sign specifically from FWDV highlighting important guidelines and tips for remote 4WD travel in the area.

The person who would have installed the signs was bitten three times by a brown snake prior to the planned installation. He’s recovered fully from this however, as you can imagine, it knocked him around for quite some time and he spent two weeks in hospital. So, through FWDV, our club received an invite to install the signs – thanks to Damian. Thank you to Jamie, Les, Peter & Edith, Graeme & Kerry and Damian for leaping at the opportunity to help out and spend a weekend in beautiful Licola installing the signs.

We were treated like royalty with plenty of food and drink supplied and lovely accommodation in the Licola Wilderness Village. The weather was perfect, the company magnificent and the work pristine. There are now 4 large signs that stand on the northern exits out of Licola. Given it’s a location we frequent as a club, we’ll be able to check on our work for many years to come.

I am so proud of our club for responding with availability and eagerness to deliver this project. We all had a great time and didn’t really want to leave on

the Sunday afternoon after all our work was done. Look out later in this magazine for an article which featured in the Gippsland Times promoting the initiative and our club’s hard work. There will also be an article in the February edition of Trackwatch. Excellent promotion for our club!

The other event that occurs each year immediately after Christmas is our Christmas Trip. Run by David Wilson, these trips tour various regions of the high country and generally have good challenges testing our Subies. This year was no exception. Commencing at Dargo, the trip visited Grant, Collingwood Spur Track, Crooked River, Talbotville, Harrison’s Cut, Dog’s Grave, Murdering Spur Link Track (where a driveshaft was broken on Peter & Jean’s vehicle), Dawson City, Haunted Stream, Swifts Creek, Omeo, Buckwong Creek Hut and the Poplars. You couldn’t get a better spot than Buckwong Creek Hut (which Dave calls the best campsite in Victoria – I think we all concur!) where we stayed for two nights and enjoyed ringing in the New Year! Simply the best. Look out for what will be an excellent trip report. Also, head to our website or Facebook page to watch a short trailer (teaser) video of the full-length feature of the trip due to be released shortly.

In other great news and speaking of the web; we have a new website! Through a positive (and very generous) partnership with Glenn Arkell from the Ballarat District 4WD Club, we had a professional and easy to edit website created, overhauling our out-dated old site. I have completed further updates, content modifications and additions providing a positive face and promotional tool for our club. Please check it out at www.subaru4wdvic.com.au. There’s also a video page featuring videos of many of our trips. Feel free to click away and share with friends (or anyone you know who owns a Subaru!). We’re continuing to make further updates to the site over the coming months and regularly adding new content as an adjunct to the Facebook page. Hopefully, this will help us find new members into the future.

This Australia Day long weekend will see my Mount Samaria trip run. Be prepared for some Ned Kelly history and a relaxing, social weekend with a good tour of the area thrown in. If you haven’t let me know you’re coming yet, please contact me to let me know.

If I don’t see you on the long weekend, I’ll see you at the January General Meeting and out on the road – wherever we may be heading.

meeting at 8pm.

MOUNT SAMARIA STATE PARK

24th to 26

th January 2015 ( Australia Day weekend)

The Australia Day Long Weekend will be a fantastic weekend for all involved – a fun, social, interesting and scenic trip. From a standing camp at Stringy Bark Creek, we will explore the area north of Mansfield, Tolmie, Ned Kelly territory and Mt Samaria State Park. We will also visit Powers Lookout and Whitfield. While mostly a touring trip, there will be some 4WDing through easy to medium tracks.

This area is just south of Benella. It will be a standing camp with access for camper vans.

ANGLESEA

Date 14-15 February 2015 Standard Easy to Medium. Meeting time:- 10am Winchelsea.

This will be an opportunity to do some sand driving and explore an area that the club has done little in.

We will start at Winchelsea on Saturday morning and make our way to Anglesea to camp the night at Hammond Rd Campsite. Saturday afternoon there will be time to go to the beach, do a coastal walk or just find a café for afternoon tea. We will have tea in Anglesea and there may be the opportunity to do a bit of night driving on the way back to camp. Sunday we will again be back in the sand and exploring some of the Otways National Park to eventually finish at Lorne. Then it will be back home along the Great Ocean Road.

Come for the whole weekend or just join us for one day.

Cost camping fee are $13 a site and each site can have 2 tents.

Weather permitting, we will be viewing the movie on an outdoor screen, seated on deckchairs and wearing wireless headphones. The atmosphere is very relaxing and well worth the experience. This screen is located behind the Cameo building on a grassy slope.

Dining will be at the adjacent Reel Cafe — pleasant, relaxing, and good food. This cafe occupies part of the original cinema building.

The Movie: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Movie Price: $10 each for a party of 10 or more. This can be paid on the night. In the unlikely event there are less than 10 the price will be Adult $18.50, Concession $12.50

What to bring: Pillow (for screen viewing comfort), blanket/sleeping bag (for warmth if a cool evening). If you are not sure if it will be cool then come prepared; it can get very cold in the hills.

DISCOVER MELBOURNE WALK

Meet in Federation Square at 1pm and Bev will lead us on a tour of discovery around the City centre. Learn some of the history as we visit historic sites, check out the architecture, venture down some of the little laneways etc. We might even find a Chocolate shop along the way. The afternoon will finish with the opportunity to have afternoon tea together. For those who want to meet for lunch before the walk this is also an option. The walk will take about 4 hours at a leisurely pace.

TASMANIA

Date:- 21-28 March 2015

Trip Standard:- difficult to very difficult

Convoy Limit:- 6 vehicles.

This trip will be along the west coast of Tasmania.

The trip will start and finish with a Saturday night crossing of Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania. Cost of this will be about $500.00

Vehicles will need to be well prepared and self sufficient. A set of spare parts such as hoses and belts, as well as at least one full size spare tyre. Recovery points front and rear, snatch strap, bow-shackles, underbody protection and extra clearance are required as well. I will be fitting a winch to my car before this trip!

CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY

Held Sunday 30th November at Brimbank Park, Keilor.

The Day of the Club Christmas party turned out to be a very warm day. But Brimbank Park was a great location to be. The advance party found a very large shady tree near the carpark and the toilets. Jamie provided some shelters which were set up to provide shade over the BBQ and the food tables.

As people arrived they quickly set up chairs in the shade and lots of fun was had as people greeted each other and settled in to enjoy the day. Our cooks quickly got into action and before long everyone was enjoying their meals. After the main course was cleared away, out came the deserts with Ruth’s trifle being the star attraction and quickly consumed.

After the meal with everyone relaxing in the shade it was time to arrange for Santa to visit the children. As we had had no volunteer to be the man in the red suit we were going to make up a story about Santa leaving the gifts but not having time to stay. At this moment Santa arrived for the Group next to us so we put our gift giving on hold. Jean encouraged by Damian and then Dot went over and asked Santa if he would mind making another quick visit to our group which he was more than happy to do. Santa got a little more than he was expecting when Glenys came and sat on his knee much to the delight of us all.

While most of the group was more than happy to sit in the shade, a few went for a walk and Anthony was keen to try out his new bike that had been made by Dad (Dave) and him.

It was great to have so many club members join us. We had 38 Club members and 3 dogs join us for the day. There were also a few apologies due to poor health or other commitments. But it was just a lovely relaxed day with good food and good company in a great setting.

HIGH COUNTRY CHRISTMAS TRIP

Members started gathering at Blacks Flat on the 26th of December, Christmas

festivities left behind and the prospect steep slopes, haunted streams and rocky outcrops ahead.

The early arrivals joined Dave on a day drive as he initiated his brother into the thrills and spills of 4 wheel driving. They enjoyed a day of eventful driving to Talbotville and Grant township sites that included Dave coming up close and personal to a tree. Fortunately, not too much damage done. After hitting a wallaby the night before, this was an inauspicious start for the blue car.

By the evening many more of the company had arrived. Blacks Flat was a great swimming spot and refreshed bodies greeted Dot and Martin as they arrived at the site on the Upper Dargo River. Now there were 10 cars ready for the touring adventures. A lovely fire saw the company into the evening. Next morning there were two flat batteries in camp to start the day. However, soon the company were on their way to Harrisons Cut to view the low waterfall at the manmade diversion of the river.

Soon we were on our way much to the enjoyment of some campers at Collins Flat who expected the Subarus to falter at the first stream crossing. Not so, and on we travelled up Stock Route Track to Birregun Road before turning on to Dane Track and then on to Messmate Spur Track.

On the way we visited a monument which honours faithful pioneering dogs.

Moving on, all was proceeding well. However, there was very large tree blocking the track. A diversion was needed.

We needed to approach from a different track. The very steep Messmate Link Track was now on our route. It was a long con tenuous climb which included 30 degree slopes and deep swales. A number of the cars had reached the top and were taking a breather when news came through that the Bellis’s car had broken the front drive shaft. Fortunately, Peter had been able to rest the car on the first spoon drain of the very steep ascent.

Two key things needed to happen. We needed a drive shaft and we needed to bring Peter’s car safely to the bottom of the slope. There was some mobile reception at the top of the hill if a person stood on top of a vehicle and waved an arm in the air. Steven managed to make contact with his brother, Jason, who generously agreed to drop in a drive shaft the next day after he had collected it from Dave’s house in Berwick. It was only a three and a half hour journey from Melbourne to Dargo and another two hours to the site. One challenge sorted. Now the task was to get Peter to safety.

What followed was a slow winching exercise with Peter Fullalove then gently bringing the car down the very steep slope. At the end of there was drop where the car rolled over the final embankment from where it was towed to a spot beside the track. It was a tense and carefully managed rescue and all were relieved when Peter was safely down. However, the group was not going anywhere. So, camping by the track was the only option. The group searched out some places and then set up chairs in the middle of the track where it was nice and shady with little passing traffic.

The next morning saw Dave & Steven head out of camp to meet Jason and then lead him back down the track- about a 4 hour return journey. The rest of the group enjoyed a relaxed morning reading, playing cards and Finske. We only had to move off the track once. At about 12, the travellers returned with Jason who was greeted as a hero. It was not long before Rick and supporting mechanics had replaced the drive shaft and Peter was ready to roll.

A lunch break was called, but a hurried pack-up was needed when thunder and lightening was heard and the prospect of a forecast rain storm seemed imminent. However, we only had a brief shower and distant grumbling to accompany us on our way. Off we went to conquer that steep slope again- no worries this time. Jean let out a mighty cheer as the little green car reached the top.

High Country Hut

Our camp that night was Dawson City, at the start of the Haunted Stream Track. When we arrived there was rather limited camping. However, with some clever positioning and the cooperation of the other campers, we managed spots for all and a place for a roaring campfire.

The next morning saw us prepare to tackle the Haunted Stream. ‘There are some rather deep bog holes’ were the comments to send us off. And so we commenced the first of the 52 stream crossings. There were some interesting entrances and exits and there were some tricky diversions around some very deep bog holes as Rick experienced when his right back wheel slipped into one. (Subaru ingenuity quickly sorted that problem, though!) Yes, it is deep, Rick!

However, all in all, it was an uneventful journey, although it was a very long day by the time we arrived at Buckwong Hut Camping ground.

We had all started to set up camp, when Dave declared that he had found us the best camping site ever and we should all move. After investigation, we agreed with Dave and then started to shift camp. What a funny site it was as we grabbed tents and threw them on car roofs or bonnets or just carried them off to secure the ‘best site’. There were great soft grassy places for all and a glade for the campfire. Jamie brought out the chain saw and tackled some of the piles of wood lying around. Logs and ‘chimneys’ were prepared while Martin and the kids made sure the site was cleared and safe for the fire. In the meantime, Andrew rigged up the shower with its instant heating system. We all took advantage of the lovely hot camp shower over the next 24 hours. It was a late start for the campfire that night, but the tired drivers enjoyed its warmth as they relaxed after the day’s driving. No-one was moving very fast the next morning. After a late breakfast, it was agreed that there would be a drive in the afternoon for those who interested. People were happy just to sit, chat and relax. However, Peter’s ‘new’ drive shaft had a leaking boot needing replacement.

Murray River at The Poplars

The rest of us took to the opportunity to go to The Poplars’ campsite. On a previous visit, the site was still suffering after following a bushfire and was looking desolate. Some years on, it was considerably more treed and appealing although there was not a single camper in this extensive area.

The Murray River is just a small stream at this point- an ideal place for paddling or a dip in its crystal clear waters. We had reached the border and we swam in NSW. It is a pity the Murray waters aren’t so clear at its mouth.

Stephen enjoying a swim in the Murray A rough, but not arduous, track took us home for our New Years Eve celebrations around the roaring fire. Spectacular chimneys-hollow logs which allow the flames to shoot up accompanied by wriggling sparks- were a highlight. It was a simple yet satisfying way to bring in 2015. We all agreed that Buckwong Hut camping was about as good as you get and a super place to conclude our trip. Huge thanks to:

We request all entries to be in a couple of days prior to the February meeting to ensure we can collate the presentation.

Categories you can enter:

All photographs submitted must have been taken in the last two years (2013 & 2014) at a club event. Any photographs that have won a prize previously are not eligible.

There is a limit of one photo per person, per category (however, family mem-bership allows for each member to submit their “best photo” but they must have taken the photo themselves).

So, rifle through your collection of club event photos from the last two years and send them to us. When you send your photos, please include in the de-scription the trip on which they were taken and a title for the photo.

Members in attendance at the meeting will be able to vote for the winner in each category - come along, see a display of the club’s events over the last two years and VOTE for the best photos!

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT & RECOVERY GEAR

The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.

Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not

participate until payment is received.

Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip:

a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader

b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t);

c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap;

d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to

vehicle design;

e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio;

f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver;

g) Spare Tyre (full size);

h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent;

i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing);

j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays;

k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip)

l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw;

m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good);

n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip);

o) A Tool Kit;

p) Personal First Aid Kit;

q) The Vehicle Manual.

Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Co-ordinator or the Trip Leader concerned.

All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

Damian was re-elected president of the Association for the next two years.

4WD Victoria is actively involved in the “clean up the bush” ac-tivity with DEPI and Parks Victoria.

Need assistance with the erect of 4WD information at Licola before the Christmas period. Being done in conjunction with the Wellington Shire Council. Most likely will be done on 13/14 December.

8. General Business 8.1 South Gippsland Waters is looking at doing some work with the club

in 2015. Will involve a mixture of jobs – track maintenance, signage, tracking of tracks.

8.2 Club website – going through a redevelopment and will come on-line in early 2015. The switchover will occur on Friday and will involve changing servers.

8.3 Damian has a copy of 4WD Victoria’s annual report for 2014 for any member to peruse.

8.4 Roof racks – Damian was able to purchase lockable racks for $85 a pair from an importation place in Dandenong.

8.5 Jessica is now a qualified club 4WD driving instructor. Stephen pre-sented her with her instructor’s shirt.

8.6 Phil Milkins was presented with a President’s Award for the time and

effort he has committed to the club, and particularly over the last few years as a committee member.

● Many thanks to Glen Arkell from the Ballarat 4WD Club for his assis-tance in the site upgrade. The committee agreed to pay Glen an honorarium of $200 for his efforts.

● Martin showed the new website-in-development. 7.2 Community Involvement

● Nothing to report. ● The club has the opportunity to assist with the erection of 4WD signs

on the four roads into Licola on the weekend of 13th/14th December 2014. So far, eight members have indicated their willingness to as-sist. Details will be emailed to participants.

7.3 Constitution Review ● Nothing to report. ● Will need to review the membership fee section regarding life mem-

bers. 8. General Business

● First aid kits – it has been a few years since they were last checked and updated. They are currently located with Dale Rebgetz and Michael Hartshorne.

● Perpetual calendar – Jessica is currently updating it. Seeking feedback as to what to include in it.

● Club annual awards – they used to be presented at the club’s Christmas party at the end of the calendar year.

● Club publicity events – need to ensure that members are wearing club shirts, etc, on such events so that the club presents a cohesive image.

● Meeting slide presentation – it was well received and very useful. Next Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 3rd February, 2015 at 7:30pm at the

home of Martin Foot. Meeting closed at 9:56pm
