The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2015/16 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2015 and are as follows:

● Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) ● Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the August Subaru 4WD Club magazine. This year is moving quickly. It will be Christmas before we know it. And, I don’t know about you, but I can feel it warming up lately. The cold and wet days seem to be less frequent and I can start to feel spring creeping in. That means more trips… and that is a good thing! Thanks for reading this month’s magazine. We hope you enjoy this edition.

The AGM is this month which means I have been in the role of President for 12 months. I’ve just written my Annual Report for the club and I don’t want to double up too much on what I have shared in that report in this one. However, I did want to say that I have spent quite some time over the past month reflecting on the club and I can say that I’ve really enjoyed my first year as President. I was, initially, quite apprehensive about taking on the position but I have since loved every minute of it. I think what helps make it so enjoyable is the support I receive from the entire committee and all members. We’re a lucky club that has a very positive, proactive committee as well as members who don’t hesitate to assist in helping where they can. For that, a sincere thank you to everyone.

I think, for me, there are two highlights over the past 12 months that stand out demonstrating the calibre of members we have in our club. I preface highlighting these by mentioning that I’m constantly impressed by the efforts of everyone in our club – whether it be helping another member (or prospective member) by sharing some advice, preparing supper in the kitchen each month for fellow members or dedicating time to put together and run our photo competition. Everyone pitches in.

But there are probably two particularly impressive highlights over the past 12 months. The first is the efforts of 8 members who voluntarily dedicated a weekend in early December to help install informative tourist signs in Licola. With about two weeks notice, these members committed their time, drove to Licola and provided 12 hours each of hard labour over the two days to dig holes, pour concrete and bolt signs together to help inform travellers on their way through this beautiful location. I can tell you; digging holes a minimum of 600mm deep in Licola – an area known for being almost only rock! – is an impressive feat. Thank you to all involved.

The other highlight is the Explore Australia Expo. The efforts of 13 members ensured great success was achieved for us in constructing a stand which was welcoming, interesting and provided some insight into the activities our

club delivers for its members. Another big thank you to all those involved in this activity too. We may get involved again next year if the opportunity arises.

Then, of course, there are the trip leaders who have run some seriously

impressive trips over the past 12 months. A wide variety of types and grades

of trips have been enjoyed and very professionally run by those prepared to

step up into that leadership role. Well done and thank you.

Speaking of new trip leaders, well done to Peter and Edith who ran a very successful day trip out in the Brisbane Ranges this month. We had a great day! It was very well attended too with 12 vehicles – quite a few of these were new members out on their first trip or visitors getting a feel for what we offer. Peter and Edith ran a perfect introductory day for those new to the club to learn about convoy procedures, CB radio use and get a taste for the fun we enjoy. Thank you, Peter & Edith!

With the warmer months come more trips. Please look out later in this magazine in the Trip & Social Report for information on upcoming events and trips you may wish to attend. For more information on anything you see listed, speak with the relevant Trip Leader.

With the AGM upon us, it looks as though we will now have only one position on the Committee that may be vacant. If you’re thinking about getting more involved in the club, please speak with myself or another member of the Committee. We’d love to hear from you.

Make sure you only have a light meal (if any meal at all) on the evening of the AGM because, as per tradition, the club will be catering for all members. Pizzas will be delivered to the clubroom and Meredith has kindly donated her time to bake a range of goodies for supper! Thank you, Meredith.

We look forward to your company at the August Annual General Meeting where you can catch up on the latest club news, hear trip reports and, most importantly, see what shape our committee and club will take over the next 12 months. JULY GENERAL MEETING AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

We will have the general meeting followed by the AGM afterwards.

Special Supper: Pizza’s on the club! Be sure to have just a small dinner (or at least save some room) for a special supper – pizzas will be delivered to our meeting. Meredith will also be baking a range of goodies!

Relax and take in the spectacular sights and sounds of the beautiful Yarra Valley on this 45 minute trip. Cost $15 per person

Then take an easy scenic drive to the Yarra Valley Lodge in Chirnside Park for a wonderful High Tea from 1-4pm. Cost will be $45 per person and will include hot and cold savories, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and a buffet desert selection with an emphasis on Chocolate.

Lerderderg & Wombat State Forests camp and night drive trip

The weekend aims to be a mixture of social relaxation as well as interesting four wheel driving. We will meet out the front of the Clarkefield Primary School in Clarkefield (near Riddells Creek) at 10:30am for an 11am departure. We'll then take a relatively short drive to camp via some scenic areas. The plan is to then set up camp and relax in the afternoon. This will be followed by an early dinner (around 5:30/6pm or so).

Then, just after dark, we will head out for a night drive until around 10:30 or 11pm. The night drive will take us through Lerderderg State Forest as well as the northern section of Wombat State Forest ending up at a fire tower where we will, hopefully, enjoy some views of the city lights.

The Sunday will be a very relaxed start (feel free to sleep in!) with nothing serious planned. Though, a drive can be arranged, depending on interest, with options aplenty.

Bring warm clothing for the evening as it can get cold in this region. If you have any games you’d like to share with the group for the camp in the afternoon, feel free to bring them along!

There are many of us in the club who enjoy taking photos, close-ups, macro photography, scenery, nature while we are on trips.

The purpose of this is to get together, take some photos and then later in the day choose a few of our better compositions to share with the group, so that we might discover what makes a good photo, thinking about composition and lighting etc.

will be held on Tuesday, 25th August 2015

at the South Camberwell Tennis Club rooms, 322 Burke Road, Glen Iris

commencing after the finish of the August general meeting.

Order of business will include:

Confirmation of the minutes of the 2014 annual general meeting.

Presentation of the 2015 annual report. Presentation of 2015 annual financial statement. General business. Presentation of annual and other awards. Election of officers of the club and ordinary members of

the committee. Nominations for committee positions should be submitted to the club secretary by no later than 7 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. However, on the day, nominations for com-mittee positions will be accepted from the floor of the meeting. Special Resolutions If a member wishes to bring an item of business to the Annual General Meeting that requires a special resolution, 21 days written notice of the special resolution must be given to all club members. Christmas in July

Christmas in July was again a great night of fun and food. With a few last

minute cancellations due to work or health issues we had 22 people attend.

Peter and I had made a trip to the church in the morning to collect a table,

chairs, crockery and cutlery. Peter B. had the BBQ’s fired up and the meat

on by the time Mike, Meredith and Jan arrived at about 4pm to help set up

etc. Dot and Martin had good intentions to arrive early but got delayed.

The meal consisted of roast pork, beef and chicken and roast vegetables.

Every one did an amazing job of clearing the first course away, washing

serving platers etc and preparing for desert.

I ask at one table for someone to beat the cream. Edith was very quick to

volunteer her husband. The stunned look on Peter’s face was priceless.

(Well not quite as Edith was fined for dobbing him in.) Peter D. (there were 3

Peters) quickly offered and we have the photographic evidence to show who

got to lick the beaters.

Desert was mini plum puddings with ice-cream, custard or cream (or all 3 if

you were some people). Peter B. made a lovely raspberry cheesecake which

Andrew refused to eat, as it was too healthy. It had fruit in it.

Door prizes were distributed with Lisa having fun drawing out the announcing

of winning tickets.

At the end of the evening as everyone was helping to pack up and move

furniture the front door bell rang. When I opened it there was no one there.

Then out from their hiding places grinning like two naughty little boys popped

Martin and Steve.

Thank you everyone who came for an evening filled with lots of fun and

chatter. Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way on the evening.

Trivia Night

I started with a table and half of participants for the Trivia Night and by Friday evening prior I was down to 5 participants. Due to illness, people being away etc the numbers fall way.

To make up the table I added a couple of other friends.

After Round 1 of General Knowledge questions, our team was in joint first place.

After Round 2 of General Knowledge question we were in second position, half a point behind the leaders.

From there it was down hill, sometimes slowly and sometimes very quickly. Sport was not our strong point and we were the lowest scoring team for that round. On the Music questions we did only slightly better. Our table you would be please to hear do not watch a lot of television or movies so as a consequence we had difficultly when it came to answering questions on either.

We worked well as a team, often being able to get an answer by having our

memories jogged by something one of the other team members suggested. We took a few guesses some of which were correct and some were way out. We had some answers that required a number or a year and with most of these we were often one away from the correct answer.

While we didn’t win but finished somewhere in the middle we had a lot of laughs and fun along the way. We enjoyed a wonderful supper and taking part in competitions during the evening.

Midweek Mungo Meander

(or when Jessica put on a jacket) Monday With members coming from different parts of the city at different times, the caravan park in Mildura was chosen as the place to meet. Jamie was the first to arrive - on Saturday, no less. He made himself comfortable and then did some touring of the local area. Jessica was the next to arrive on Monday afternoon and headed to the caravan park where Jamie had already set up, only to find him having a little-lie-down. Michael was the third one to arrive, with Tim not long after.

We were all quickly set up, and then we sauntered to the club across the road for dinner. It was cheap Tuesday, so the place was very busy, but we were seated quickly. After ordering the meals didn’t take too long to arrive, and I am not actually sure if anyone was able to finish theirs. The servings were generous, and there was a self serve vegetable and salad bar as well. We waddled back to the caravan park and it was not long before we were all fast asleep, with an assurance of a lazy start the next day.

Tuesday

A relaxed start to the day saw us packed up and off to the supermarket for some last minute supplies. After shopping and fuelling up we enjoyed coffees and a bite to eat. Then it was into the vehicles and we headed north. The trip out to Mungo was pretty uneventful, and it was obvious that the dirt road had

been recently graded. So obvious in fact that we passed the grader hard at work. There was a rest stop on the way, however we chose not to use it.

We arrived at the Mungo Main Camp at about midday, so we staked out a claim, and had some lunch. There has been some work done at the campsite as there are now shelters with

tables which looked very new. After lunch we made our way to the ranger station where we paid for the campsite and had a good look around the interpretive centre. Then it was back to camp where we got the fire going. Jamie had spotted a cache of old railway sleeper on the way to Mildura, so he and Jessica had stocked up. Not that they needed to as there was plenty of fallen timber on either side of the road from Mildura to Mungo. Once the fire was going it was time for dinner so we each did our own thing before coming together to eat. The discussion around the campfire went on for a few hours before one by one everyone made their way to bed.

Wednesday

We had another leisurely start to the day (this was always going to be a relaxed trip) with the intention of getting going by about 10am. As everyone was good to go by 9.30 we headed off. Michael was planning to join Jamie’s trip later that week so he joined Jessica in her car and was thereby dubbed the narrator for the self drive tour. There are numbered posts

along the loop and the interpretive centre has brochures with the explanations.

We stopped often on the 70 kilometre drive to learn more about this fascinating area. There is still some discussion amongst the scientific community about the age of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man who were found in the area in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Estimates range from 30,000 to 42,000 years old. Nevertheless, it is agreed that they are the earliest signs of humanity outside Africa. So it is no surprise that this is now a world heritage area and access to the Walls of China is limited due to the damage done by visitors in the past.

There is an artesian well which was used to water the horses for the Cobb and Co coaches and riders that criss crossed the country. NSW National Parks are in the middle of building some more shelters here and the workmen were hard at work when we arrived. We hiked up the dunes and could just make out the ranger station on the other side of the lake, about 10 kilometres away.

We had lunch after the climb, and after building up an appetite, and fortunately the workmen left us in peace soon after. We continued our drive with a couple more stops for photos or to read the many information signs. We made it back to camp where we decided by mutual consent that it was

five o’clock somewhere. The campfire was lit again, this time using some of the wood that Tim had bought in Mildura. Nice little mallee roots that burnt very well.

After dinner we sat around solving the problems of the world, before eventually retiring for the night.

Thursday

We rose early and after breakfast started packing. It didn’t take long and Tim and Jessica were the first to leave as they were heading to Mildura and then on to Melbourne. Jamie and Michael had a leisurely drive to Pooncarrie for the start of Jamie’s trip to Minindie Lakes. On the way out of the campsite Jessica stopped to give the Subaru we had seen earlier a club brochure. Jessica and Tim then backtracked to Mildura where they went their separate ways.

It would be possible to do this trip in three days, but it would mean a long first day, and possibly setting up camp around dusk. The campsite got busier each afternoon as camper arrived, so the early setup meant we had the pick of the spots.

It was great to have a few days to relax in the middle of the week. Especially with such good company. I am looking forward to heading up there again.

The absent members were most grateful for receiving the cards. Peter Devine voiced a formal thanks to Jean and Peter for organising the night.

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT & RECOVERY GEAR

The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.

Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not

participate until payment is received.

Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip:

a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader

b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t);

c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap;

d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to

vehicle design;

e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio;

f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver;

g) Spare Tyre (full size);

h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent;

i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing);

j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays;

k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip)

l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw;

m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good);

n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip);

o) A Tool Kit;

p) Personal First Aid Kit;

q) The Vehicle Manual.

Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Co-ordinator or the Trip Leader concerned.

All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on Tuesday 4

th August 2015 at the home of Jean Bellis starting at

● Multiple trips on long weekends – is the number of members in the club and wanting to attend trips getting to the point that we need to start offering/running multiple trips on long weekends, with a vehicle limit on the trips?

● Letter to life members - was circulated to the committee for com-

ment. After some minor corrections, the letter was accepted by the committee. The letter will be sent to the life members in the next week or so.

● Still have 5 membership renewals outstanding. Reminders were sent out with the paper copy of the magazines.

6.5 Editor ● Nothing to report. ● No-one has put up their hand to take on the editor role. Maybe the

committee needs to “target” a member or two.

● Has not met yet although there have been some informal discus-sions.

8. Annual General Meeting

● Annual accounts for the 12 months to 30th June 2015 were tabled for

review by the committee. The club operated at a surplus of $454 for the year, and has a healthy balance sheet with over $12,000 in the bank accounts.

● Annual reports from committee members for July to June are required by next week.

● Chairman for elections – will approach someone on the night. ● Supper – order pizzas for the night. Damian to organise – Stephen to

provide details. Jean to contact Meredith about other food. Damian to buy some large bottles of soft drinks. Will need some disposable cups and napkins.

● Membership awards – Martin to provide details and, hopefully, do cer-tificates.

● Door prizes – will have some on offer. Maybe some gift vouchers – one for $50 and a second for $30, and some minor ones.
