Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis — ‘Bring back our girls!’LastThursday, standinginfrontof thestat-ue of the face of lateNelsonMandela, at theStellenbosch Town Hall, a small group ofNigerian nationals currently studying atStellenbosch University held a silent vigilin support of a growingAfrica-wide plea tobringbackmore than200Nigeriangirls re-cently abducted in Chibok, Nigeria.

Philip Hayab, president of the Nigerian Stu-dents’ Association at Stellenbosch University, said that governments of African nationsshould put pressure on the president of Nigeriaand its military, to desist from politicising theabduction of the young women. Hayab, citingthe fact that the wife of the Nigerian president,Patience Jonathan, “doubts whether any girlswere actually abducted in the first place”, hesaid that “with doubt such as this, why wouldthe [Nigerian] government take any serious ef-fort inrescuingthegirls fromthehandsof theircaptors”? Expressing his personal views on thepossible role that Nigerian diaspora ought toadopt in the mediation of the current kidnap-ping crisis, an emphatic Hayab said “those ofus who are outside of [Nigeria] are even moreoutspoken than the people back at home. Weare taking this matter seriously. We wish tosee these women being brought back homesafely”.

Issuing an official statement on behalf of allNigerian students studying at StellenboschUniversity, Hayab said, “Our hearts and

prayers are with the parents whose daughterswere abducted. We cannot wait to hear newsof their safe return back home. We, the Nigeri-an Students Association at Stellenbosch Uni-versity, will do everything in our power to seethat our girls are brought back home safely”.

Gina Opara, a sympathiser who attended thesilent vigil held in Stellenbosch, lamentedwhen saying that, “as a mother I just wantedto cry. How could this be happening in this dayand age?” she said.

Opara’s feelings of hopelessness at not know-ing how she could help in a personal capacity, prompted her to actively engage in not only at-tending the silent solidarity vigil recently heldin Stellenbosch, but also added her signatureto the online petition - accessible atwww.change.org - which has been establishedto express international solidarity surround-ing the fate of the abducted girls.

At the time of writing, the online petition hasgarneredmorethan580 000signaturesthusfar.

The small group of Stellenbosch silent vigilattendees has participated in additional activ-ist support both on popular social-media plat-forms such as Facebook (https://www.face-book.com/bringbackourgirls) and on Twitter(https://twitter.com/rescueourgirls).

Protests in solidarity of the growing desper-ate plea to see the safe return of the abductedNigerian girls is gaining rapid momentumthroughout South Africa and other Africancountries too.

Sy ma se suster, Una Vermeulen, was eerste

op die toneel en was in trane.“Toe ek die bakkie sien, het ek gedink hy is

dood. Dit is ’n wonderwerk dat hy leef.”Elizabeth is net baie bly haar seun is nie dood

nie.“Dit kon baie erger gewees het. Ek wil net

Most important,yet most neglectedDAVID MALHERBE

Many entrepreneurs are known for theirability to spot and utilise opportunities. When they can do extra busi-ness and make more profit, theygo for it. Thepeoplewhoare in business already, areusually those who will befirst to grab an extra oppor-tunity and will later tend tothe impact of the new ven-ture on the infrastructure oftheir existing business(es).

Unfortunately everytransaction should be re-corded in your business’sbooks. And if it is a new busi-ness that you start, you needaseparate set of books for thenew venture. Entrepreneursareusually so fascinatedandexcited about the possibili-ties of expanding by meansof the new venture, that therequired paperwork is neg-lected.

This leads to either the downfall of a verypromising opportunity because of uncon-trolled spending or a very costly exerciseto catch up sometime in the future. My ex-perience is that inaccurate filing and book-keeping leads to thousands of rands beingpaid out wrongfully or not being collected, though it was due to you.

Administration and bookkeeping is theaspect that most entrepreneurs see as anunnecessary nuisance and they want tospend as little as possible on it. If they justknew what a good bookkeeper and a thor-

ough administration system can savethem, they will value this function muchhigher.

Because most entrepreneurs themselvesusually come fromasalesand marketing back-groundrather thananad-ministrative one, theyseldom really grasp whatit takes to be a good ad-ministrator or bookkeep-er.

My advice to any busi-ness owner is to ensurethat your administrationand bookkeeping is ingood hands and that itstays up to date. Withoutthe necessary informa-tion available, you can-not make good decisionsfor the future of yourbusiness. The days whena business owner couldmake business decisionsbased on the balance inthe cheque account, are

long gone. The complexity of the presentday business environment necessitatesquality business administration in time. Itis not wise to neglect your business’ mostimportant health barometer. They say thatif you pay peanuts, you hire monkeys. Youcannot afford not to have quality peoplewhere excellence is really important.(DavidMalherbe is a business- and career

Dawid Malherbe: “Paperwork is so im-portant for ytour business’ success.” #Stellenblog kicks

off with a digital bangThe experiential #Stellenblog blogger cam-paign kicked off with a digital bang last Mon-day, when the pioneering Stellenbosch Ameri-can Express® Wine Routes caused quite a stironsocialmedianetworkswithsomeofthemostinfluential internationalandnationalbloggersuncovering and digitally sharing the secretsand stories of South Africa’s oldest and fore-most wine route with the world.

The launch party was held at Dornier Es-tate’s regal Homestead and saw a cool and con-nected crowd of more than 200 bloggers, onlineinfluencers, Stellenbosch glitterati and localfood and wine personalities blogging, tweetingand Instagramming up a #Stellenblog storm.

This all happened during ahomegrown feastof the finest Stellenbosch wines and food in-fused with live music entertainment by localmusicians such as Gerald Clark, Schalk Jou-bert, Henry Steel, Schalk van der Merwe andLuna Paige.

Thisunrivalled celebrationof all thingsStel-lenbosch, saw celebrated icons such as KleineZalze, The House of JC Le Roux, StellenboschVineyards, Tokara, Spier, Simonsig, Dornier,Majeka House, The Devon Valley Hotel, Olden-burg, Van Ryns, Warwick Estate, Delheim,Middelvlei and Lanzerac pulling out all thestops.

The high-ranking international bloggers for#Stellenblog were selected for the quality of

their content, ideal target audiences and socialmedia reach, representing the wine route’score international markets: the USA, UK, Ger-many and the Netherlands.

They include the award-winning Matt Longof the luxuryadventure travel site, Landlopers(www.landlopers.com), Niamh Shields(www.eatlikeagirl.com), Norman Röhlig of I-REF (www.i-ref.de), and Keith Jenkins of theopulentVelvetEscapetravelblog(www.velvet-escape.com).

By 5 May, the campaign’s launch day, it hadalready generated a digital reach of 20 millionopportunities to see (OTS) content generatedviaTwitterwithareachof2,1millionaccounts.

Over 550 pictures have been shared on Insta-gram.

Hashtracking, a twitter tracking tool, showsmore than 23 million OTS and a reach of 2,7million Twitter accounts, whilst the global on-line tracking agency Brandseye, shows aslightly higher OTS because they also monitorFacebook.

This week-long digital exploration of thebeauty and bounty of the region, forms part ofthe wine route’s year-long Stellenbosch Expe-rience wine tourism marketing campaign, which was initiated in conjunction with Stel-lenbosch 360, to showcase the region’s authen-tic, multifaceted and must-experience winetourism offerings on a global scale.

World’s nurses honoured for hard workNurses around the world were celebratedon Monday 12 May for the sacrifices theymake for the sick and needy.International Nurses Day honours these

menandwomen, who are recognised as theheartbeat of health care, for their selflessand commendable acts.Clinical facilities throughout the West-

ern Cape will host various events thismonth to commemorate the sterling workrendered by the dedicated nursing profes-sionals employed inWesternCapeGovern-ment Health.“Weareinaworldofconstantchangeand

responding to these changes is difficult ifwetakeonlyalocalhealthapproach,”West-ern Cape Government Health said in astatement.“While local context is essential for un-

derstanding anddesigninghealth services,we are increasingly globally connected. This connectivity can be seen in the move-ment of people, technologies, finance, knowledge and information.”

As the largest group of health profession-als in theWesternCape, whoare the closestandoften theonlyavailablehealthworkersto the population, nurses have a great re-sponsibility to improve the health of thepopulation. The International Council ofNurses‘ theme for International NursesDay 2014 is: Nurses: A force for change. Avital resource for health.“It is that time of the year where we hon-

our and celebrate our nurses who work sotirelessly to provide not only service deliv-ery but are essential in delivering healthservices to our people. How to strategise the hunt for employmentDuring economically difficult times finding ajob can be tough, whether you have just gradu-ated, were recently retrenched, or just want tochange jobs. The challenges associated withfinding employment are probablymore daunt-ing to first-time job seekers, who do not knowthe job-search landscape and don’t know whatto expect, but the search should be treated asa journey, not a series of attempts.“Finding a job is a process, and it is impor-

tant that this process is backed by a strategy. It is also worth remembering that, while youaresearching fora job, thesearch isandshouldbe treatedasyour job,” saysErnaKruger, headof programmes at The Independent Institute ofEducation(IIE),SA’s largestandmostaccredit-ed provider of private higher education.Kruger says that during the process of look-

ing for and securing a position, one could findwonderful opportunities you never imagined, and therefore it is necessary to keep an openmind. “It is important that you set goals foryourself when searching for that perfect posi-tion,” says Kruger.“These goals may include, for instance,

searching and applying for ten to fifteen jobsper week until you find full-time employment. It is also very beneficial to register your CVwith employment agencies or use online em-ployment services to search and apply for jobsthat you are genuinely enthusiastic about. However, make sure that you are qualified forthe job, otherwise your CV will easily end upin the bin and not be considered again.”While conducting your job search, it is also

anopportunitytoimproveyourknowledgeandskills, says Kruger.“Start to get used to an 8-hour working day,

by devoting a large chunk of the day to yoursearch, and by optimally using the other hoursavailable to you,” she says.

“Youcouldconsidergettingadditionalquali-fications in the career field you are interestedin, or do short learning programmes thatwould further enhance your standing in a par-ticular field. Higher education institutionssuchasThe IIE, for instance, offer awide rangeof career-focused qualifications which can beattended as a full-time, part-time or distancestudent. They also offer short learning pro-grammes that may add considerable weight toyour CV.”Kruger says that there are also many re-

sources available to assist job hunters, such asfree web-based resources that help graduatesprepare themselves to make the best of the ap-plicationand interviewprocess, aswell ashelpthem put their best foot forward in their firstjob.“These kinds of resources couldmake all the

difference in ensuring that you set yourselfapart from other candidates,” she says.Options also include taking up other oppor-

tunities, suchasdoinganinternship,part-timework, freelance work and volunteer work inthe field you want to work in.“Taking such opportunities could help you

get your foot in the door and sell yourself. Theymay open doors for full-time work, but evenif they don’t, they will add to your experiencewhich you can add to your CV.”Importantly, Kruger adds, time should be

spent onmaking sure your CV is professional,as it is the first impression a prospective em-ployer will get of you.“Finally, always remember to not give in to

despondency, but to rather consider other al-ternatives. There is no reason for you not tobeworkingandearninga living.Part-time jobsthatmightnotnecessarilybe in thecareer fieldyou are interested in are always available andcould include waiting tables.”
