This Wednesday, we begin our liturgical season of Lent, the forty day prepara on for the Easter Triduum. On Ash Wednesday, we will wear ashes on our foreheads as an outward sign of our inner poverty and need for repentance. The Church sends us with the three weapons of the spirit - prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving.

To fast is to limit one’s food or drink and is ordered to the feasts. Season of fas ng serves for our purifica on and emptying. These observances are important, but they are not ends in themselves. Fas ng is not an absolute virtue, but the founda on of other virtues. Many of the ancient Fathers held fas ng to be an essen al element in a Chris an’s life of prayer. “Repentance without fas ng is useless,” said Saint Basil the Great. Fas ng is for the sake of prepara on. Fasts are the precondi on of our being filled on the feast.

We look to good biblical examples when we fast. For instance, Moses and Elijah fasted forty days before going into God’s presence (Ex 34:38, 1 Kings 19:8). Anna the prophetess fasted to prepare herself for the coming of the Messiah (Lk 2:37). Our Lord Jesus Christ himself fasted for forty days in the desert before his public ministry (Mt 4:2). Fas ng was a basic requisite to fulfill a mission or to meet God. The bible spells out specific spiritual benefits of fas ng. For instance, it produces humility (Psalm 69:10). It shows our sorrow for our sins (1 Samuel 7:6). It clears a path to God (Daniel 9:3). It is a means of discerning God’s will (Ezra 8:21) and a powerful method of prayer (Ezra 8:23). It is a mark of true conversion (Joel 2:12).

Brothers and sisters, let us begin these forty days of prepara on for the most important event of Chris ans, namely, the Passion, death, and resurrec on of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us follow Christ on his way to the desert to fast so that we may learn how to fight and overcome the tempta ons of the devil. Let us pick up the weapons of the spirit - prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving - to reflect on our rela onship with God and neighbor. During this season of Lent, our parish will pray the Sta ons of the Cross every Friday. We will also celebrate one main penance and reconcilia on liturgy on March 26th so that parishioners can approach the sacrament of confession. We will also offer the opportunity for confessions every Thursday, 7:00-9:00pm. These celebra ons allow us to prepare worthily, with repentance and conversion, for the celebra on of the great feast of Easter.

Este miércoles, comenzamos nuestro empo litúrgico de Cuaresma, los cuarenta días de preparación para el Triduo Pascual. El Miércoles de ceniza, se nos marcara las frentes con cenizas como un signo externo de nuestra pobreza interior y la necesidad de arrepen miento. La Iglesia nos envía con las tres armas del espíritu - la oración, el ayuno y la limosna.

Ayunar es limitar la comida o bebida y están en función a las fiestas. La temporada de ayuno sirve para nuestra purificación. Los ayunos son importantes, pero no son fines en sí mismas. FAITH IN ART: THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF THE EVANGELIST SYMBOLS (PART 2)

One of the most exquisite addi ons to our worship space are the four stained glass windows represen ng the Evangelists. How did the symbols become associated with each Gospel writer? St. Irenaeus (140-202 A.D.) explained the symbolism as follows:

The winged ox represents St. Luke. Oxen were used in temple sacrifices. For instance, when the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem, an ox and a fatling were sacrificed every six steps (2 Sm 6). St. Luke begins his Gospel with the announcement of the birth of St. John the Bap zer to his father, the priest Zechariah, who was offering sacrifice in the Temple (Lk 1). St. Luke also includes the parable of the Prodigal Son, in which the fa ed calf is slaughtered, not only to celebrate the younger son’s return, but also to foreshadow the joy we must have in receiving reconcilia on through our most merciful Savior who as Priest offered Himself in sacrifice to forgive our sins. Therefore, the winged ox reminds us of the priestly character of our Lord and His sacrifice for our redemp on.

Lastly, St. John is represented by the rising eagle. The Gospel begins with the “lo y” prologue and “rises” to pierce most deeply the mysteries of God, the rela onship between the Father and the Son, and the incarna on: “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was in God’s presence, and the Word was God. He was present to God in the beginning. Through Him all things came into being, and apart from Him nothing came to be” (Jn 1:1-3). WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT BEING A REGISTERED MEMBER? Did you know that demographic studies es mate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? If you are not registered in our parish, please consider doing so! Encourage your adult children who were formerly registered in your family household to register as adults with their own membership record.

Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, it cannot adequately serve the needs of all – especially single adults, divorced per-

sons, or young families, who may not see the need to register. When the services of the Church are needed - such as for a wedding, Bap sm or funeral - it is easier (and in some situa ons is

required) if the person is registered. Registered parishioners receive helpful informa on and communica ons from the parish.

How do you know if you are registered? Registered members receive contribu on envelopes in the mail every two months. If you are not receiving these envelopes, you are likely not listed in our database as registered. If in doubt, call the parish office to verify your membership.
