MASS INTENTIONS

Readings & Reflections

LISTENING AND RESPONDING Let's not be too hasty in defining who is "the wicked one" and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don't like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don't like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don't like? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY'S READINGS FIRST READING • Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put

You may ask, what's an Extraordinary Minister?

"Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion" is the formal title of laypeople who distribute the Eucharist during Mass. As the title implies, there are also "ordinary ministers" - those who are literally "ordained" to the ministry namely bishops, priests, and deacons. In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be sufficient number of ministers to reverently/ distribute Holy Communion, especially when Communion is offered under the both species: the Body and Blood of Christ. This is why laypeople are needed to serve in this ministry. It is indeed an honor to be able to offer the Body and Blood of Christ to a fellow member of His body.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. The preparation given at St. Rose of Lima Parish addresses the practical manner in which to handle the consecrated bread and wine. It also focuses on the understanding that a Minister of Communion is serving the true presence of the Lord.

A complete description of the regulations may be found in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, No. 28.)

Excerpts from: Diocese of Sacramento website, U.S. Catholic Faith in Real Life

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord, Keep them, for they are Thine - Thy priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine. Keep them, for they are in the world, Though from the world apart; When earthly pleasures tempt, allure, Shelter them in Thy heart, Keep them, and comfort them in hours Of loneliness and pain, When all their life of sacrifice For souls seems but vain, Keep them, and O remember, Lord, They have no one but Thee, Yet they have only human hearts With human frailty. Keep them as spotless as the Host, That daily they caress; Their every thought and word and deed Deign, dearest Lord, to bless.

Amen

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the "Mother School" of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in "national parishes," were established to preserve the culture and language of the "old country," and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded "separate schools" were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require considerable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States. . --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH

Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience, renowned, author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 “keys” to enable Christians to oppose with

logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the “dictatorship of relativism.” He also clarifies the proper understanding of what it means to judge, and the importance of making good judgments.

Men’s Cursillo Weekend 2018 I am the vine you are the branches. He who abides in me bears much fruit , from apart from me you can do nothing. ~John 15:5 Are you interested in deepening your relationship with Christ? Do you wish to live your faith more fully and connect with a faith - filled community of Catholics? Join us for the Men’s Cursillo weekend, Applegate Jesuit Retreat Center, beginning in the evening, on Thursday, September 27, through Sunday September 30, 2018.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
